Abstract

ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE
A wear pad for a cutting tool is disclosed. The wear pad is spring loaded by means of belville washers that may be reloaded so that a relatively large force results for any movement of the wear pad. The spring loaded wear pad is used with two conventional fixed wear pads on a tool, for example used in deep boring intersecting holes. The spring loaded wear pad stabilizes the drill when drilling intersecting holes and holes that are disclosed at right angles to one another and also stabilizes the drill when starting new holes.

Description

2Z~ 54 B~CKGROUNV OF INVENTION
2 s problem has long existed in connection with drilling holes which intersect. One purpose of the invention is for the stabilizing of the drill for drilling through cross holes at 90. Drilling cross holes at 45 or any other angle is also 5 fit a problem. Starting the drilling of large holes is also a problem. The present G Al invention stabilizes the drill when starting a hole in a flat surface. The stabilizing of the drill when the drill pressure is reduced at the termination point of the drill S 1¦ hole is also important. Previously in drilling cross holes it was common practice 9 I to plug the hole with wood, steel or other substance to stabilize the drill. The 10 ,, present invention solves the prowls problems aforesaid and results in better tool life and improvement in starting the drill and avoids chatter of the drill on the 12 ! work. Two screws are provided on the present wear pad to prevent it from rotating.
?, I Applicant uses a third screlv and n belviIle washer for the spring. This reduces of 14 I the space required for a helical spring.

16 it SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
17 Jo The invention provides a floating wear pad which may be used with US ¦ two stationary wear pads on a boring tool. The floating wear pad aids in stabilizing 19 " the brine tool during starting and when the tool passes through the workout the end 20 1! of a cut stabilizing the drill when boring cross holes at 900 or in boring cross holes 21 ¦¦ 45 to one another, or any other angle.
