Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A disposable diaper has a moisture impermeable backing sheet. a fibrous absorbent batt and a flexible hydrophobic facing sheet overlying the batt, the components being secured together to form a sandwich structure; the facing sheet has an aperture in the central crotch region of the diaper with zones of elastication in the facing sheet tending to apply tensioning forces to the facing sheet for urging the facing sheet (at least in the regions adjacent the aperture) away from the underlying batt structure.
With advantage the facing sheet is a breathable web of bonded fibres highly resistant to permeation of moisture.
It is preferred that the absorbant batt structure comprises a wood-pulp batt and a non-woven sheet of moisture permeable material overlying the absorbant batt.

Description

~Z47~3 The pre6ent invention relate6 to di~po6able diapers.
Conventionally di~posable diaper6 compri6e a liquid impermeable pl~6tic backing ~heet, a wood-pulp ab~orbant batt ~nd ~ moi6ture permeable facing 6~eet, the component6 5 being secured tvgether by line6 of ad~esive with the backing an~ facing sheet6 u~ually directly ad~e~ively interconnecte~ ~roun~ peripheral portion6 o~ the diaper.
Some ~i~po~able ~i~per6 inclu~e el~tic band6 for providing a ~aping an~or gathering effect for the diayer in the crotch region and facilitating the establ;~hment of a flui~
resi~t~nt se~l aroun~ the infant's legs. Exa~ple6, of known di~per~ are foun~ in Au6tralian patent 6pecific~tion~
526338 and 528786.
It woul~ be desirable for a di~po6able diaper to be of a de~ign which can be con6tructed very cheaply yet efficiently in ~ high 6peed m~nufacturing machine bu~.al60 provi~e excellent per~ormance in e~fectively containing an~
retaining li~ui~ diGcharge6 de~pite nor~al bodily movements of an infant. ~hen an inf~nt void6, a con6iderable volume of liquid i~ release~ at a locali6ed region of the crotcb eortion of the diaper and thi~ release i~ relatively fa6t thereby i~po~ing con6iderable ~emand6 upon the perfor~ance of the ab60rbant material which u~ually ha~ a wicking ef~ect to di~perse t~e urine. Furthermore in the case of a male baby, it i6 po66ible for the ~i6charge o~ urine to be ~irecte~ upwardly away from the crotch region and effective containment can be a problem.
It i6 al60 de6irable ~or a di6po6able diaper to be conformable to the ~hape of the baby ~o a6 to have a good appearance and provide a high degree of comfort even after a liquid di6charge ha6 taken place.
Thu6, there are many challenging requirement6 for di6po6able diaper6 ~nd conflicting requirement6.
The pre6ent invention i6 directed to a new and ufieful alternative to previou~ propo~al~.

12~715 ~3 According to the pre~ent invention, there is provided ~ eo~able diaper compri~ing a moi~ture impermeable backing sheet, a fibrou~ absorban~ batt ~truc~ure, a flexible hydrophobic f~cing ~heet overlying t~e absorbant bat~, the component~ being ~ecured together to Xorm a ~andwich ~tructure, ~n~ an aperture being pro~ided in ~aid f~cing ~heet in the central crot~h region o~ the diaper with zone~ Or ela~tic~tion being provided in the facing ~heet een~ing to ~pply ten~ioning force6 to the facing shee~ ~nd urging the facing ~heet at lea6t in the region~
a~jacent ~ai~ aperture away from the underlying bat~
~tructure.
In thi6 ~pecification~ the term ~'hydrophobis facing ~heet~ mean~ a sheet re~istant to wicking of moisture along the 6heet and re6i6tant to tran6mitting moi~ture ~hrough the 6heet. Pref~rably, the facing sheet ha~ a high d~gcee of hydrophobicity and may have with ad~antage a ~ink time of greater than 12 hour~ in a basket ~ink ~ime t~t according to A.S.T.M. Te~t Part 32 D-1117/80 Part V.
Purthermore the facing ~heet preferably iG of a carded rayon or ~imilar fi~re web bonded with a hydrophobic re~in, the ~heet being breathable and relati~ely 60ft ~o the touch. Typically the ~heet will be 24 g.s.~. with good 6tructural inteqrity.
The material u~ed for the flexible facing 6heet preferably i6 hig~ly re6istant to the penetration of li~uid but is breathable and capable of penetration by moi6ture vapour. Example~ of material6 which may be u6ed compri6e a moi6~ure repellant non~woven fabric, a melt blown polypropylene ~eet, or an apertured polyethelene film.
Except for the limited region~ of the ab60rbant batt 6tructure aliqned with the aperture in t~e crotch region, the flexible facing sheet can provi~e a relati~ely dry an~

~2~

Preferably, the invention is applied to a dispo6able diaper having band~ of ela~tication provided along the opposi~e marginal portion~ of the crotch region of the diaper for provi~ing a gathering e~ec~ an~ e6tabli~hing a se~1 around the infan~'~ leg~, the zone~ of ela~tication and t~le facing shee~ being 6paced from 6aid band~ of el~stic. However, ~or economy o~ manufacture, the6e band~
of ela~ication could be omitted leaving the hydrophobia facing 6heet to provide a ~e~lU ~round the infant'~ leg~.
Advantaqeou61y, the batt i~ of rectangular 6hape loc~ted with a diaper having an hour-glas~ overall ~hape.
A preferre~ an~ important e~bo~iment of the invention has the zone6 of ela~tica~ion of the facing sheet in the form of ~trip6 of elastication extending ~ub~antially parallel ~o the longitudinal direction of the diaper.
However, ot~er ela~tication arrangement~ could b~
provi~ed if de~ire~; for example longitudinally extending band~ of elastic extending from the wai6t band region of th~ diaper towards the central aperture might ~e u6ed to provide the ten~ioning effect.
Although the ~urface portion of the ab60rbant batt remote from the backing ~heet could be a treated ~rface portion of wood-pulp fibre~ (which are preferred ab~orben~
fibre~ a non-woven ~heet of material which i~ readily permeable ~o moisture may be u~e~ with advantage to overlie the ab60rbant batt.
Another additional inventive ~nd advantageou~ feature which can be u6eful1y employed in embodiment~ of ~he invent~on i6 the provi6ion of mean6 for 6ecuring the facing ~heet to the underlying material in a region intermediate the respective longitudinal side6 of the aperture and the ad3acent edge of the cro~ch region. Preferably, thi6 interconnec~ion i~ e6tabli~hed by ~ line of adhe~ive ~uch a6 hot melt adhe6ive which in a preferred embodiment attache6 the facing ~heet to the underlying non-woven f~bric moi~ture permeable ~heet.

It may be advantageou6 tv clo~e adhe6ively the diaper ~ructure ~t one or both the waist bana region6 by band6 of a~hesive exten~ing tran~versely acro6~ the ~tructureO
