Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A disposable diaper has a moisture impermeable backing sheet. a fibrous absorbent batt and a flexible hydrophobic facing sheet overlying the batt, the components being secured together to form a sandwich structure; the facing sheet has an aperture in the central crotch region of the diaper with zones of elastication in the facing sheet tending to apply tensioning forces to the facing sheet for urging the facing sheet (at least in the regions adjacent the aperture) away from the underlying batt structure.
With advantage the facing sheet is a breathable web of bonded fibres highly resistant to permeation of moisture.
It is preferred that the absorbant batt structure comprises a wood-pulp batt and a non-woven sheet of moisture permeable material overlying the absorbant batt.

Preferably, the invention is applied to a dispo6able diaper having band~ of ela~tication provided along the opposi~e marginal portion~ of the crotch region of the diaper for provi~ing a gathering e~ec~ an~ e6tabli~hing a se~1 around the infan~'~ leg~, the zone~ of ela~tication and t~le facing shee~ being 6paced from 6aid band~ of el~stic. However, ~or economy o~ manufacture, the6e band~
of ela~ication could be omitted leaving the hydrophobia facing 6heet to provide a ~e~lU ~round the infant'~ leg~.
Advantaqeou61y, the batt i~ of rectangular 6hape loc~ted with a diaper having an hour-glas~ overall ~hape.
A preferre~ an~ important e~bo~iment of the invention has the zone6 of ela~tica~ion of the facing sheet in the form of ~trip6 of elastication extending ~ub~antially parallel ~o the longitudinal direction of the diaper.
However, ot~er ela~tication arrangement~ could b~
provi~ed if de~ire~; for example longitudinally extending band~ of elastic extending from the wai6t band region of th~ diaper towards the central aperture might ~e u6ed to provide the ten~ioning effect.
Although the ~urface portion of the ab60rbant batt remote from the backing ~heet could be a treated ~rface portion of wood-pulp fibre~ (which are preferred ab~orben~
fibre~ a non-woven ~heet of material which i~ readily permeable ~o moisture may be u~e~ with advantage to overlie the ab60rbant batt.
Another additional inventive ~nd advantageou~ feature which can be u6eful1y employed in embodiment~ of ~he invent~on i6 the provi6ion of mean6 for 6ecuring the facing ~heet to the underlying material in a region intermediate the respective longitudinal side6 of the aperture and the ad3acent edge of the cro~ch region. Preferably, thi6 interconnec~ion i~ e6tabli~hed by ~ line of adhe~ive ~uch a6 hot melt adhe6ive which in a preferred embodiment attache6 the facing ~heet to the underlying non-woven f~bric moi~ture permeable ~heet.
