Abstract

Abstract of the Disclosure An absorbent pad for meat and poultry products and the like and a method for constructing same is disclosed. The absorbent pad includes upper and lower plastic film layers, at least one of which is perforated, and an intermediate absorbent layer disposed between the layers. The intermediate absorbent layer includes a series if juxtaposed and overlapping absorbent material fibers with superabsorbent granules dispersed throughout the absorbent layer and supported by the absorbent material fibers within interstices thereof. The surperabsorbent granules are capable of absorbing and suspending liquids therein while being physically retained in place and supported by absorbent material fibers have liquid therein. The superabsorbent granules are fixed and held in place by structurally interacting absorbent material fibers and/or by attachment to one or more of the types of absorbent material fibers constituting the absorbent layer.
The upper and lower film layers are attached to one another at least partially along opposite marginal edge portions thereof to retain the absorbent layer between the upper and lower layers.
The superabsorbent granular particles are homogeneously dispersed throughout the absorbent layer and supported in generally spaced relationship within the interstices of the absorbent material fibers, to enable suspension and retention of liquid by said superabsorbent granules and absorbent material fibers.

Claims (24)

1. An absorbent pad for meat and poultry products and the like including:
upper and lower perforated plastic film layers;
an intermediate absorbent layer disposed between said upper and lower layers and having a plurality of juxtaposed and overlapping absorbent material fibers which are operatively secured to adjacent absorbent material fibers in structural supporting relationship and are also constricted to provide a plurality of spaced interstices extending throughout said absorbent layer;
a plurality of superabsorbent granular particles dispersed throughout the absorbent layer and being supported at random and spaced locations by said absorbent material fibers within at least some of the spaced interstices, at least some of the absorbent material fibers throughout the layer also being constructed to grip and physically retained some of the super absorbent granular particles in place in the absorbent layer, said superabsorbent granular particles being capable of absorbing and suspending liquids therein while being supported and physically retained in place by the absorbent material fibers of said absorbent layer even after liquid is absorbed in said superabsorbent granular particles and absorbent material fibers;
and said upper and lower perforated plastic film layers being attached to one another at least partially along opposite marginal edge portions thereof to retain said absorbent layer between said upper and lower layers.

The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 1 wherein said superabsorbent granular particles are homogenously dispersed throughout said absorbent layer and supported in generally spaced relationship to one another while said juxtaposed and overlapping absorbent material fibers conform to the shape of said particles in surrounding locations thereof, in order to provide suspension and retention of liquid by said superabsorbent granules and absorbent material fibers.

The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 2 wherein the upper and lower perforated plastic film layers have a plurality of perforations which are dimensioned and arranged across each film layer to permit liquids to pass therethrough for entry into the absorbent layer over a predetermined time period.
4. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 1 wherein said juxtaposed and overlapping absorbent material fibers are secured in bonded relationship to one another to provide interacting fibers for structurally supporting and retaining in place said superabsorbent granular particles.
5. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 1 wherein said superabsorbent granules comprise carboxy-methyl-cellulose.
6. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 1 wherein said superabsorbent granules comprise an acrylic superabsorbent.
7. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 1 wherein said absorbent pad is formed as a series of adjacent absorbent pads frangibly connected to one another in an elongated strip, opposite marginal edges of each pad being sealed along the opposite marginal portions of upper and lower perforated plastic film layers.
8. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 1 wherein said absorbent pad, including all layers thereof, has a generally rectangular shape defined by two opposing pairs of marginal edge portions, at least one of said two opposing pairs of marginal edge portions being sealed to one another.
9. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 8 wherein both of said opposing pairs of marginal edge portions are sealed to one another.
10. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 1 wherein the absorbent material fibers of said absorbent layer are made from cellulose and thermoplastic fibers.
11. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 10 wherein said cellulose and thermoplastic fibers are non-woven and attached to one another.
12. An absorbent pad for meat and poultry products and the like including:

upper and lower plastic film layers, at least one of which has a plurality of perforations therethrough;
a plurality of juxtaposed and overlapping absorbent material fibers forming an absorbent layer disposed between said upper and lower layers, said juxtaposed and overlapping absorbent material fibers being operatively secured to adjacent absorbent material fibers throughout said layer to provide a plurality of interacting structurally supported fibers that also includes a plurality of spaced interstices therethrough;
superabsorbent granular particles homogeneously dispersed throughout said absorbent material fibers and being supported and physically retained in place by said absorbent material fibers in at least in some of said spaced interstices, at least some of the absorbent material fibers throughout the layer also being constructed to grip and physically retain some of the super absorbent granular particles in place in the absorbent layer, said superabsorbent granular particles being capable of absorbing and suspending liquids while being held n supported and retained relationship by said material fibers within the spaced interstices thereof even after liquid is absorbed in said superabsorbent granular particles and absorbent material fibers; and said upper and lower plastic film layers being attached along at least some marginal edge thereof in order to retain said absorbent layer therebetween.

The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 12 wherein said upper and lower perforated plastic film layers are attached to one another throughout the entire circumferential extent of the marginal edges thereof, whereby to provide top and/or bottom wicking only of said absorbent layer including said subabsorbent granules through the perforations in at least one of said upper and lower plastic film layers.
14. An absorbent pad for meat and poultry products and the like including:
upper and lower plastic film layers;
an intermediate absorbent layer disposed between said upper and lower layers and having a plurality of juxtaposed and overlapping absorbent material fibers operatively secured to adjacent absorbent material fibers and also being constructed to provide a plurality of spaced interstices extending throughout said absorbent layer;
superabsorbent granular particles dispersed throughout the absorbent layer and being supported at random locations by said absorbent material fibers within at least some of the interstices therebetween, at least some of the absorbent material fibers throughout the layer also being constructed to grip and physically retain some of the super absorbent granular particles in place in the absorbent layer, said superabsorbent granular particles being capable of absorbing and suspending liquids therein while being supported and physically retained in place by the absorbent material fibers of said absorbent layer even after liquid is absorbed in said superabsorbent granular particles and absorbent material fibers; and said upper and lower plastic film layers being attached to one another at least partially along opposite marginal edge portions thereof to retain said absorbent layer between said upper and lower layers, while permitting side wicking into said absorbent layer and superabsorbent granular particles.
15. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 14 wherein at least one of said upper and lower plastic film layer also being perforated to also provide top and/or bottom wicking into said absorbent layer.
16. An absorbent pad for meat and poultry products and the like including:
upper and lower plastic film layers each having a plurality of perforations therethrough which are dimensioned and arranged to permit liquids to pass through said layers;
an intermediate absorbent layer disposed between said upper and lower layers and having a plurality of material fibers in which adjacent absorbent material fibers are secured in bonded and structurally supporting relationship to one another at spaced locations by thermoplastic fibers to provide a plurality of interacting structurally supported fibers with spaced interstices therebetween throughout said absorbent layer;

superabsorbent granular particles homogeneously dispersed throughout said absorbent layer and being supported an physically retained in place by said interacting structurally supported absorbent material fibers in at least in some of said spaced interstices, at least some of the thermoplastic fibers also gripping and physically retaining some of the superabsorbent granular particles in place in the absorbent layer, said superabsorbent granular particles being capable of absorbing and suspending liquids therein while being held in supported and retained relationship by said interacting structurally supported absorbent material fibers within the interstices thereof even when said absorbent material fibers also have absorbed liquid therein; and said upper and lower perforated plastic film layers being attached to one another at least partially along opposite marginal edge portions thereof to retain said absorbent layer between said upper and lower film layers.
17. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 16 wherein the superabsorbent granules comprise carboxy-methyl-cellulose.
18. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 16 wherein the superabsorbent granules comprise an acrylic superabsorbent.
19. The method of constructing an absorbent pad for meat and poultry products and the like, comprising the steps of;
forming upper and lower plastic film layers at least one of which is perforated, positioning said film layers in spaced relationship to one another;
forming a series of juxtaposed and overlapping absorbent material fibers with spaced interstices therein to provide an absorbent material layer;
homogeneously dispersing superabsorbent granules throughout said absorbent layer fro receipt within at least some of said spaced interstices thereof;
securing some of the superabsorbent granules to some of the absorbent material fibers throughout the absorbent layer;
positioning the thus formed absorbent layer between said upper and lower film layers;
moving said layers into assembled proximity to one another; and attaching marginal edges of said upper and lower layers at least partially along circumferential portion thereof to retain said absorbent layer therebetween.
20. The method as defined in Claim 19 wherein each of said layers are formed into an elongated absorbent pad strip, and separating said absorbent pad strip transversely of said strip into discrete units each forming an individual absorbent pad.
21. The method as defined in claim 20 wherein said upper and lower layers are attached to one another along opposite continuous marginal edge portions during an assembly process, and following separation of said absorbent pad into discrete absorbent pads transversely of said elongated absorbent pad strip, attaching said upper and lower layers along opposite separated transverse edge portions for circumferentially attaching each absorbent pad throughout the entire peripheral extent thereof.
22. The method as defined in Claim 20 wherein said upper and lower layers are attached to one another both along opposite continuous marginal edge portions and along spaced transversely extending portions to form said individual absorbent pads.
23. The method as defined in Claim 22 wherein said spaced transversely extending portions are also perforated therealong to facilitate separation into individual absorbent pads which are circumferentially sealed along all peripheral edges thereof.
24. The absorbent pad as defined in Claim 16, wherein some of said superabsorbent granular particles are physically retained in place by said thermoplastic fibers and said cellulosic absorbent material fibers bonded in a densely formed mesh construction, whereby said superabsorbent granular particles, when absorbing liquid are prevented from moving within said absorbent layer.
