Abstract
The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for enhancing communication that use spread spectrum technology. The method of processing a signal includes applying a spread spectrum encoding process to the signal where the improvement includes applying a first error protection process to a significant portion of the signal and a second error protection process to a less significant portion of the signal. The first error protection process provides a greater amount of error protection than the second error protection process. The actual step of applying the error protection processes can include, for example, applying a variable rate coder to the signal to generate an intermediate modulated signal and applying a variable time modulator to the intermediate modulated signal.
