Abstract

Premature separation of an identification card incorporated in a business form from the business form may be avoided in a construction including a base sheet (10) of a size substantially greater than the intended card (24) and provided with a laminate layer (16) of relatively indestructible material adhered to the base sheet (10) at a location thereon that is to define the intended card (24). The laminate layer (10) has a size greater than the intended card (24). The laminatelayer (16) is provided with a closed line of perforation (20) defining the boundary of the intended card (24) while the base sheet (10) has a substantially continuous closed slit (22) of the same size and shape as the closed line of perforation (20).
The closed slit (22) is aligned with the closed line of perforation (20) and the result is such that the card (24) may be separated from the remainder of the business form solely by breaking the perforations of the line (20).

Description

9~-7 ~~P
SPECIFICATION
BUSINESS FORM INCLUDING LAMINATED IDENTIFICATION CARD

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to cards of the sort generically known as identification cards, and more particularly, to business forms that are used to produce such cards.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Recent years have seen an explosion in the use of identification cards produced as part of business forms, particularly continuous business forms. Such cards are more economically produced than conventional plastic cards and maybe readily processed by computer printers, particularly when the business form is a 15 continuous business form containing a plurality of such business cards.
In the usual case, the card is formed of a base material that is relatively destructible as, for example, paper. Thin layers of relatively indestructible materials are adhered to one or both sides of the cards. These layers add strength to the card as well as protect it from the elements.
In the usual case, the base material is a base sheet which may be one form length of a continuous business form or an individual sheet as desired. It will typically be considerably larger than the card which is to be formed from it. In some cases, the laminate layers are placed on as individual patches while in other cases, the same are placed on the business form as elongated sheets.
In either event, where the laminate is a conventional, transparent polyester having a thickness of 0.0005" to 0.005", a rectangular perforation is placed in the business form to define the boundary of the card. It has been determined that unless the ties are less than 0.016", and the cut to tie ratio of the line of perforation is greater than 9.0, difficulty may be encountered in removing the card from the business form.
At the same time, with such tie lengths and cut to tie ratios, the perforation 5 may not be strong enough to maintain the card as part of the business form through customer printing, insertion into an envelope, etc., and may prematurely partially or wholly separate from the business form.
The present invention is directed to overcoming one or more of the above problems.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is the principal object of the invention to provide a new and improved business form. More specifically, it is an object of the invention to provide such a business form that includes a laminated identification card.
According to one embodiment of the invention, such a business form is provided by a base sheet formed of a destructible medium such as paper or the like and having a size substantially greater than the intended card. A laminated layer of relatively indestructible material is adhered to the base sheet at a location thereon that is to define the intended card. The laminate layer has a size greater 20 than the intended card. One of the sheet and the laminate layers has a closed line of perforation defining the boundary of the intended card. The other of the sheet and the laminate layer has a substantially continuous closed slit of the same size and shape as the closed line of perforation and which is aiigned therewith. As a consequence, the intended card may be freed from the remainder of the business form substantially solely by breaking the closed line of perforation in the sheet or laminate layer in which it is formed.
Slitting one of the layers and perfing the other of the layers allows a reduction in the cut to tie ratio to provide a stronger attachment that will not 5 prematurely separate while assuring that the card will readily separate from the business form after processing is complete.
In a highly preferred embodiment, the closed line of perforation is located in the laminate layer while the sheet is provided with the substantially closed slit.
In a highly preferred embodiment, a business form is provided that includes 10 a base sheet formed of a destructible medium such as paper or the like and having a size substantially greater than the intended card. A first laminate layer of relatively indestructible material is adhered to the base sheet at a location thereon that is to define the intended card. The laminate layer has a size greater than the intended card. A second laminate layer of relatively indestructible material is 15 adhered to the base sheet on the side opposite from the first laminate layer and at the corresponding location thereon. One of the laminate layers has a closed line of perforation defining the boundary of the intended card and the other of the laminate layers along with a sheet has a substantially continuous closed slit of the same size and shape as the closed line of perforation. The closed slit and closed 20 line of perforation are aligned with each other so that the intended card may be freed from the business form substantially solely by breaking the closed line of perforation in the one laminate layer.
In a highly preferred embodiment, the base sheet has a face and a back and the laminate layer containing the closed line of perforation is adhered to the back 25 while the laminate layer having the closed slit is adhered to the face.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Fig. 1 is a somewhat schematic, sectional view of a business form made according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken approximately along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
and Fig. 3 is sectional view taken approximately along the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
An exemplary embodiment of a business form with an included identification card is illustrated in the drawings. It should be understood that reference to an identification card refers to such cards generically and not to such cards that are used solely for identification purposes. For example, such a card might be what is conventionally understood to be an identification card or it may be something like a frequent flier mileage card. Alternatively, it could be a card indicating insurance limits on an automobile insurance policy or the name of an insurer for a group health policy. Other examples of uses for such cards abound.
In the usual case, a business form will include a base sheet 10 which typically will be formed of a destructible material such as paper. The base sheet 10 will frequently be sized so as to fit within a conventional mailing envelope, that is, have a width of about 81/2" and a length that is some multiple or fraction of 1 1". The invention contemplates that the base sheet 10 be part of an elongated web defining a continuous business form wherein the individual sheets are defined by cross-lines of weakening, such as perforations, in the form. Control punch margins (not shown) may be provided along one or both of the longitudinal margins of the base sheet 10 for feeding purposes, both during manufacture and during subsequent processing.
The base sheet 10 has a face 12 and a back 14. A first laminate material 16 is permanently adhered to the back 14 at the location on the base sheet 10 whereat the identification card is to be located. On the opposite side of the base sheet 10, a second laminate 18 is located in alignment with the first laminate 16.
Typically, each of the three components, the sheet, the first and the second laminates will all be greater in size than the intended identification card as is well known. The laminate layers 16 and 18 will be permanently adhered to the base sheet 10 and are formed of a relatively indestructible material such as transparent polyester film. The film will typically have a thickness in the range of 0.0005" to 0.005" with a thickness of 0.001" being most typical.
The laminate layers 16 and 18 may be applied as patches as shown in the drawings or may be applied as continuous strips extending along a continuous business form. Patches are preferred since there is less wastage of the material of which the laminate layers 16 and 18 are formed.
In some cases, one of the laminate layers may be omitted if desired. In addition, in some instances it may be desirable to compress or otherwise form recesses on opposite sides of the sheet 10 in the area where the laminate la~/ers 16 and 18 are to be received. Such recesses will have a depth such that the upper side of the laminate layer 18 will be co-planar with the face 12 of the sheet 10 while the lower surface of the laminate layer 16 will be co-planar with the back 14 of the sheet 10.

According to the invention, the first laminate layer 16 is provided with a closed line of perforations 20 which will be genera~y rectangular in configuration and have the shape of a conventional identification card. The line of perforations 20 is closed in that it is continuous and defines a closed area that will be of the 5 desired size.
The second laminate layer 18 as well as the base sheet 10 have a substantially continuous, closed slit 22 of the same size and shape as the closed line of perforation 20 and aligned therewith. As a consequence, the boundary of the identification card is defined by the closed line of perforation 20 and the closed 10 slit 22. The card thus formed, designated 24, is readily removed from the remainder of the business form defined by the base sheet 10 and the laminate layers 16 and 18 substantially solely by breaking the line of perforation 20. As a result, the card has a smooth edge about its periphery because a slit 22 is employed rather than a line of perforation, to define most of the boundary of the 1 5 card.
In manufacture, so-called "fixed information" is imprinted upon the base sheet 10 where desired and thereafter, the laminate layers 16 and 18 applied.
Fixed information is, as known to those skilled in the art, information that will repetitively appear on each card in a series and which is unchanged from one to 20 the next.
Thereafter, the business forms are shipped in continuous form or as individual sheets to a customer who will then apply variable information such as name, address, insurance policy limits, insurer identification, etc. to the card 24 on the second laminate layer 18. It is, however, to be understood that the invention 25 contemplates the application of such variable information at the same time fixed information is applied and before the second laminate layer 18 is applied to the base 10.
Preferably, the closed line of perforation 20 and the closed slit 22 are formed simultaneously. This can be accomplished through the use of a die of the 5 type that produces a slit over a perforation. That is to say, assuming that the die encounters the form from the side of the latter having the second laminate layer 18, the die would have a rectangular configuration and be provided with perforating teeth of a length just sufficient to perforate the first laminate layer 16.
The notches between perforating teeth would also be provided with cutting edges 10 and as a consequence, the slit 22 would be formed at the same time by the perforating teeth and the intermediate cutting edges in the notches.
It will be immediately appreciated that the invention allows the cut to tie ratio to be chosen as desired to make the closed line of perforation 20 as strong or as weak as desired while leaving the closed slit 22 unaffected. Thus, a cut to tie 15 ratio less than 9.0" may be selected to assure that the card 24 cannot prematurely separate from the remainder of the base sheet 10 and yet can be readily easily removed in the hands of a customer solely by breaking the ties 28 between adjacent cuts 30 in the line of perforation 20.
