Abstract

A non-contact optical backscatter insertion probe includes an outer chamber (101), an electromagnetic energy source (104) positioned within the outer chamber for emitting photons towards a medium (108) to be analyzed, and an inner chamber (102) positioned within the outer chamber (101). The inner chamber (102) has a reflective outer surface to prevent photons emitted by the electromagnetic energy source (104) in the outer chamber (101) from entering the inner chamber (102). The probe also includes a sensor (106) positioned within the inner chamber (102) for receiving backscattered photons from the medium (108). A processor (107) receives and processes signals output by the sensor (106).
