Title: A LEASH MOUNTED STORAGE DEVICE
Inventor: Frank Danna FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates generally to storage devices for plastic bags, the storage device being attachable to a pet leash.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Pet owners often carry plastic disposal bags to dispose of pet droppings when ever they walk their pets. Often times, while walking their pet, the pet owner will hold the pet leash with one hand while clutching a few plastic disposal bags with the other. Since having both hands occupied can be cumbersome, some pet owners store the plastic bags in a pocket or purse when they walk their pets. Unfortunately, pet owners often forget to bring these plastic storage bags, or forget to bring a sufficient number of storage bags, when they go out to walk their dogs. In response to this problem, leash mounted carrying devices have been proposed.
These leash mounted devices generally have a pouch or other container which is mounted directly to the leash. The pouch or other container is configured to store a quantity of plastic storage bags.
Some of these storage devices may be releasably mounted to the leash.
While leash mounted storage devices have been introduced, they do have their drawbacks. Firstly, attaching a storage bag container to the leash will permit the storage container to swing loosely since it is attached to a flexible leash.
Furthermore, given the vigorous nature of running with a pet, it is possible that the freely swinging storage container will come loose during the outing. Also, after the bags in the container are exhausted, refilling the storage container with bags can be difficult, resulting in clutter.
Finally, prior waste storage bag containers are difficult to attach to some dog leashes, particularly those where the flexible leash is wound in a rigid housing.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with the present invention a pet walking leash for walking pets is provided having a flexible leash with a first end attachable to an animal collar and a second end attached to a leash dispenser, the leash dispenser including a leash housing for storing the leash and a hand grip positioned adjacent the leash housing and a bag dispenser mounted to the leash housing.
The bag dispenser is mounted on the leash housing at a position on the leash housing adjacent the hand grip. The bag dispenser has a bag housing adapted to retain a plurality of plastic disposal bags. The bag housing has an opening configured to permit individual bags to pass there through.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
FIGURE 1. is a perspective view of the invention showing the storage container attached to the handle of a pet leash.
FIGURE 2. is a perspective view of the invention which has been disassembled.
FIGURE 3. is an exploded view of the storage container portion of the invention.
FIGURE 4. is an exploded view of an alternate embodiment of the storage container portion of the invention DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Refernng firstly to figure 1, a pet walking leash made in accordance with the invention is shown generally as item 10 and comprises leash housing 12, having handle portion 16 and leash storage housing 14, leash 18 and disposal bag storage device 20 mounted to storage portion 14 adjacent handle 16. Bag storage device 20 is provided with aperture 28, through which plastic disposal bags 22 may be removed and snap ring 62 for attaching the bag storage device to an other object. One end of leash 18 is provided with mounting snap 19, or some other similar device, for attachment of the leash to a pet collar. The other end of leash 18 is attached to storage housing 14. Storage housing 14 preferably contains a spring loaded spool (not shown) upon which leash 18 may be wound. Such spring loaded leash storage devices are well known in S the art.
Referring now to figures 1 and 2, bag storage device 20 comprises housing portion 24 releasibly attached to cover portion 26. Outside surface 27 of cover portion 26 is provided with mounting device 31 (see figure 1 ) rigidly mounted to surface 27. Mounting device 31 (see figure 1) is releasibly attachable to mounting device 30 which in turn is rigidly mounted to housing 14.
Preferably, mounting device 30 and mounting device 31 comprise complimentary hook and loop fasteners. Alternatively, mounting devices 30 and 31 may comprise magnets, sticky tape or even complimentary tongue and groove connectors.
Referring now to figure 3, housing portion 24 has closed end 34, open end 36, internal compartment 38 and spindle 40. Spindle 40 is provided with a first end 42 which is rigidly attached to the center of closed end 34 and free end 44 projecting into compartment 38.
Compartment 38 is configured to contain role 46. Role 46 is a role of numerous plastic bags 22 which are separated by perforations 48. Role 46 is provided with a central cavity SO which is configured to receive spindle 40. Cover 26 is provided with treaded lip 52, inside surface 54 and projection 56 mounted at the very center of surface 54. Projection 56 is configured to engage and support end 44 of spindle 40. Housing 24 and cover portion 26 are releasibly attached to one another via threaded lip 52. To assemble bad storage container 20, role 46 is inserted into compartment 38 of housing portion 24 by aligning central cavity 50 with spindle 40. Before falling inserting role 50 into cavity 38, a portion of bag 22 is passed through aperture 28. Then, cover 26 is then screwed onto housing 24 such that projection 56 and spindle 40 are coaxially aligned along axis 60. Projection 56 engages end 44 of spindle 40 to support spindle 40.
In an alternate embodiment of the present invention as shown in figure 4, spindle 70 may be attached to surface 72 of cover 74 and projection 58 could be attached to closed end 76.
S Furthermore, cover 74 may be permanently attached to housing 14. Indeed, it is possible that cover 74 may be made part of housing 14.
The device will now be described in use. Referring now to figures 1 and 3, a pet owner would attach mounting snap 19 to the collar of his or her pet. Leash 18 is then drawn out of housing 14 to permit the owner to walk the pet. The owner grasps handle 16 of the leash to ensure control of the animal. If a storage bag is required, the owner may simply reach for bag 22 with his or her free hand. Since storage device 20 is mounted adjacent handle portion 16, reaching for bag 22 is simple and convenient. As bag 22 is drawn from aperture 28, the roll of bags 46 turns so that the bag is drawn out of the aperture to the point where perforation line 48 is pulled out of storage device 20. The owner may then separate bag 22 from the role while another bag still protrudes from aperture 28. When role 46 has been exhausted, housing 24 may be detached from cover 26 and a new role may be inserted. Since bag housing 24 is relatively long and large, the user can get a good grip on the bag housing to permit it to be detached easily.
It is also possible to use bag dispenser 20 by itself. It will be appreciated that not all dog leashes are provided with a an enclosed leash storage and dispensing system. A
user may attach bag dispenser 20 to a traditional dog leash by simply attaching snap ring 62 to the dog leash.
Alternatively, the user may attach bag dispenser to a belt or other item by attaching snap ring 62 to the belt or other item.
A specific embodiment of the present invention has been disclosed; however, several variations of the disclosed steps could be envisioned as within the scope of this invention. It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described above, but encompasses any and all embodiments within the scope of the following claims.
