Abstract

Electrochromic strutures (10), such as windows and panels, are provided wherein privacy and changes in the color of an electrochromic medium (14) incorporated in the structues (10) may be either enhanced or hidden when viewed from a predetermined direction, as for example, when viewed from the outside of a building or when viewed from one side of a transparent interior panel in a building.

Claims (10)

1. An electrochromic structure, especially a window or panel, comprising, in combination, first and second spaced transparent elements (16, 18), characterized in that one surface or side (50) of said first element (16) confronts said second element (18) and includes a first at least partially light transmissive electrically conductive means (22, 123, 222), in that one surface or side (52) of said second element (18) confronts said first element (16) and includes a second at least partially light transmissive electrically conductive means (24, 224), in that said structure (10, 110, 210) defines a chamber (20, 120, 220) disposed between said first and second at least partially light transmissive electrically conductive means (22, 123, 222; 24, 224) on said first and second elements (16, 18), in that an electrochromic reversibly variable transmittance medium (14) in said chamber (20, 120, 220) is in contact with both said first and second at least partially light transmissive electrically conductive means, in that one of said first and second transparent elements (16, 18) has a partially light reflective means (22, 122, 224) thereon, and in that means (28), such as a source of electrical potential, is electrically connected to both said at least partially light transmissive electrically conductive means (22, 123, 222; 24, 224) on said first and second elements (16, 18) for applying an electrical potential to said electrochromic medium (14) to cause variations in the light transmittance of said electrochromic medium.
2. The combination as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said partially light reflective means (22) is disposed on said one side (50) of said first transparent element (16) confronting said second transparent element (18), or in that said partially light reflective means (122) is disposed on the other side (48) of said first transparent element (16), or in that said partially light reflective means (224) is disposed on the side (52) of said second transparent element (18) confronting said first transparent element (16).
3. The combination as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said partially light reflective means (22, 122, 224) is also electrically conductive.
4. The combination as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said partially light reflective means (22, 122, 224) comprises an alloy including palladium and silver, and in that said at least partially light transmissive electrically conductive means (22, 123, 222; 24, 224) includes fluorine doped tin oxide.
5. The combination as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said electrochromic medium (14) is gray-scale controllable over a continuous range of light transmittance.
6. The combination as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said means (28) for applying electrical potential to said electrochromic medium (14) is effective to cause variations in light transmitted through said partially light reflective means (22,122, 224) and through said electrochromic medium (14).
7. The combination as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said at least partially light transmissive electrically conductive means (22, 123, 222; 24, 224) include fluorine doped tin oxide having a sheet resistance of 12-13 ohms per square.
8. The combination as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that one of said elements (16, 18) includes a partially light transmissive means (22, 122, 224) that includes said partially light reflective means, in that each of said elements includes electrically conductive means (22, 123, 222; 24, 224) in contact with said electrochromic medium (14), and in that said means (28) is electrically connectable to said electrically conductive means for applying an electrical potential to said electrochromic medium (14) to cause variations in light transmitted through said partially light transmissive means and said electrochromic medium.
9. The combination as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that said partially light transmissive and partially light reflective means (22) is disposed on the side (50) of said first transparent element (16) confronting said second transparent element (18), or in that said partially light transmissive and partially light reflective means (122) is disposed on the side (48) of said first transparent element (16) remote from said second transparent element (18), or in that said partially light transmissive and partially light reflective means (224) is disposed on the side (52) of said second transparent element {18) confronting said first transparent element (16).
10. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein said electrochromic medium (14) is self-erasing.
