Abstract
Devices, systems and methods for estimating inter-frequency measurements used for radio network functions are disclosed. The systems and methods described allow systems to evaluate the quality of a second frequency by using offset adjusted measurements on a first frequency. By using the described methods, system capacity is increased by providing a "low cost" measurement mechanism for support of handover that substantially balance the load between two or more frequency bands. By using the proposed method, handover can be performed more frequently and the interference within each frequency band can therefore be kept at a more optimal level.
Claims (10)
1 Claims:
1. Method for performing a handover in a cellular system, the method comprising the steps of:
measuring a transmission quality (Q F1) on a first frequency band (f1);
determining a quality offset (Q F1,2);
estimating a transmission quality (Q F2) of a second frequency band (f2) based on the quality offset (Q F1,2) and the measured quality (Q F1);
and evaluating the estimated quality (Q F2) in the handover procedure.
1. Method for performing a handover in a cellular system, the method comprising the steps of:
measuring a transmission quality (Q F1) on a first frequency band (f1);
determining a quality offset (Q F1,2);
estimating a transmission quality (Q F2) of a second frequency band (f2) based on the quality offset (Q F1,2) and the measured quality (Q F1);
and evaluating the estimated quality (Q F2) in the handover procedure.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of estimating the transmission quality (Q F2) on the second frequency band (f2) comprises the step of adding the quality offset (Q F1,2) to the transmission quality (Q F1) on the first frequency band (f1).
3. The method of claim 1 or 2, wherein a handover occurs once the transmission quality (Q F1, Q F2) on a selected of the frequency bands (f1, f2) exceeds a predefined quality threshold.
4. The method according to any preceding claim, wherein the handover is a hard handover.
5. The method according to any preceding claim, wherein the offset (Q F1,2) is dependent on the power levels which are transmitted on the frequency bands (f1, f2).
6. A quality estimation means in a cellular system, comprising, measurement means for measuring a first transmission quality (Q F1) on a first frequency band (f1);
determining means for determining a quality offset (Q F1,2);
processing means for estimating a second transmission quality (Q F2) on a second frequency band (f2) by adding the quality offset (Q F1.2) to the first transmission quality (Q F1).

processing means for estimating a second transmission quality (Q F2) on a second frequency band (f2) by adding the quality offset (Q F1.2) to the first transmission quality (Q F1).
7. A control means comprising the quality estimation means of claim 6, further comprising means for determining a quality threshold, wherein a handover from the second frequency band (f2) to the first frequency band (f1) is initiated once the second transmission quality (Q F2) exceeds the quality threshold, provided that the quality offset (Q F1.2) is positive.
8. The control means of claim 7, wherein the control means is disposed in a switch of the cellular system.
9. The control means of claim 7, wherein the control means is disposed in a mobile station (200) of the cellular system.
10. A cellular system comprising a base transceiver station and a mobile station (200) that transmit signals across a first frequency band (f1) to each other, the cellular system measures a transmission quality (Q F1) on the first frequency band (f1), wherein the cellular system determines a quality offset (Q F1.2) and estimates a transmission quality (Q F2) on a second frequency band (f2) by adding the quality offset (Q F1.2) to the transmission quality (Q F1) on the first frequency band (f1), and wherein the cellular system comprises at least one cell (10) having at least two logical sectors (18 - 28) such that one of the logical sectors (18, 22, 26) is assigned to the first frequency band (f1) and the other logical sector (20, 24, 28) is assigned to the second frequency band (f2).
