Abstract
A dental material comprising a hardenable resin and silica particles dispersed within the hardenable resin, wherein the silica particles have an average diameter of less than about 200nm and are present in an amount greater than about 40 wt% of the weight of the dental material. The dental material may further comprise a heavy metal oxide. The dental material can be used as dental adhesives, artificial crowns, anterior or posterior fillings, casting materials, cavity liners, cements, coating compositions, mill blanks, orthodontic devices, restoratives, prostheses, and sealants.
Claims (32)
1. A dental material comprising:
a) a hardenable resin; and b) silica particles dispersed within said resin, wherein said silica particles have an average diameter of less than 200 nm and are present in an amount greater than 40 wt%, based on the weight of said dental material.

2. The dental material of claim 1 wherein said silica particles are present in an amount greater than 40 wt% and less than 90 wt% based on the weight of said dental material.
3. The dental material of claim 1 wherein said silica particles are present in an amount greater than 50 wt% and less than 75 wt% based on the weight of said dental material.
4. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said silica particles have an average diameter of less than 100 nm.
5. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein said material, after hardening, has a Visual Opacity value of less than about 0:4.
6. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein said material, after hardening, has a Visual Opacity value of less than about 0:35.
7. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein said material, after hardening, has a Visual Opacity value of less than about 0.25.
8. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein said material, after hardening, has a diametral tensile strength greater than about 15 MPa.
9. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein said material, after hardening, has a diametral tensile strength greater than about 40 MPa.
10. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein said material, after hardening, has a diametral tensile strength greater than about 60 MPa.
11. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein said material, after hardening, has a compressive strength greater than about 35 MPa.
12. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein said material, after hardening, has a compressive strength greater than about 200 MPa.
13. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein said material, after hardening, has a compressive strength greater than about 350 MPa.
14. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein said hardenable resin is selected from the group consisting of acrylates, methacrylates, epoxies, and mixtures thereof.
15. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 14, further comprising an initiator for hardening said resin.
16. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 15, further comprising a heavy metal oxide.
17. The dental material of claim 16 wherein said heavy metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of zirconium oxide, cerium oxide, tin oxide, yttrium oxide, strontium oxide, barium oxide, lanthanum oxide, zinc oxide, ytterbium oxide, bismuth oxide and mixtures thereof.
18. The dental material of claim 16 wherein said heavy metal oxide is a cubic or tetragonal zirconium oxide.
19. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 18, further comprising fumed silica.
20. The dental material of any one of claims 1 to 19, wherein said material is selected from the group consisting of dental restoratives, dental adhesives, dental mill blanks, dental prostheses, orthodontic devices, dental casting materials, and dental coatings.
21. A method of making a dental material comprising:
a) admixing a surface modifying agent with silica particles;
b) admixing said surface modified silica particles with a hardenable resin; and c) hardening said resin;
wherein said silica particles are dispersed within said resin have an average diameter of less than 200 nm, and are present in an amount greater than 40 wt% of the total weight of said dental material.

wherein said silica particles are dispersed within said resin have an average diameter of less than 200 nm, and are present in an amount greater than 40 wt% of the total weight of said dental material.
22. The method according to claim 21 wherein said silica particles are present in an amount greater than 40 wt% and less than 90 wt% of the total weight of said dental material.
23. The method according to claim 21 wherein said silica particles are present in an amount greater than 50 wt% and less than 75 wt% of the total weight of said dental material.
24. The method according to any one of claims 21 to 23, wherein said silica particles have an average diameter of less than 100 nm.
25. The method according to any one of claims 21 to 24, wherein said hardenable resin is selected from the group consisting of acrylates, methacrylates, epoxies, and mixtures thereof.
26. The method according to any one of claims 21 to 25, further comprising an interim step of d) admixing an initiator for hardening said resin, wherein said step d) is performed prior to hardening said resin.
27. The method according to any one of claims 21 to 26, further comprising an interim step of e) admixing a heavy metal oxide in said hardenable resin, wherein said step e) is performed prior to hardening said resin.
28. The method according to claim 27 wherein said heavy metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of zirconium oxide, cerium oxide, tin oxide, yttrium oxide, strontium oxide, barium oxide, lanthanum oxide, zinc oxide, ytterbium oxide, bismuth oxide and mixtures thereof.
29. The method according to claim 27 wherein said heavy metal oxide is a cubic or tetragonal zirconium oxide.
30. The method according to any one of claims 21 to 29, wherein said material is selected from the group consisting of dental restoratives, dental adhesives, dental mill blanks, dental prostheses, orthodontic devices, dental casting materials, and dental coatings.
31. The method according to any one of claims 21 to 30, wherein the material further comprises fumed silica.
32. Use of the dental material as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 19 as a dental restorative, adhesive, cement, orthodontic device, mill blank or prosthesis.
