A water- and oil-repellent, antistatic composition comprises (a) at least one nonpolymeric ionic salt consisting of (i) at least one cation selected from the group consisting of monovalent metal cations, divalent metal cations, and organic onium cations, and (ii) at least one weakly coordinating anion, the conjugate acid of the anion having an acidity greater than or equal to that of a hydrocarbon sulfonic acid, and with the proviso that the anion is organic or fluoroorganic when the cation is a metal; (b) at least one fluorochemical repellency-imparting additive or repellent; and (c) at least one insulating material. The composition exhibits good antistatic and repellency characteristics.

Claims (17)

1. A water- and oil-repellent, antistatic composition comprisingt(a) at least one nonpolymerie ionic salt consisting of (i) at least one cation selected from the group consisting of monovalent metal cations, divalent metal cations, and organic opium cations and (ii) at least one weakly coordinating anion, the conjugate acid of said anion having an acidity greater than or equal to that of a hydrocarbon sulfonic acid, and with the proviso that said anion is organic or fluoroorganic when said cation is a metal; (b) at least one fluorochemical repellent;
and (c) at least one insulating material selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers, thermoset polymers, and reactive precursors thereof.
2. The composition of Claim 1 wherein said cation is an organic onium cation and said hydrocarbon sulfonic acid has from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms.
3. The composition of Claim 1 wherein said organic onium cation is a nitrogen opium cation or a phosphorus opium canon and the Hammett acidity function, H0, of said conjugate acid is less than about -7.
4. The composition of Claim 1 wherein said organic opium cation is selected from the group consisting of acyclic and unsaturated cyclic organic onium cations and said anion is selected from the group consisting of organic anions and fluoroorganic anions.
5. The composition of Claim 1 wherein said ionic salt consists of at least one cation selected from the group consisting of alkyl phosphonium cations, aromatic nitrogen opium cations, and acyclic nitrogen opium cations; and at least one organic or fluoroorganic anion .
6. The composition of claim 1 comprising (a) at least one nonpolymeric ionic salt consisting of (i) at least one nitrogen onium or phosphorus onium cation and (ii) at least one weakly coordinating anion, the conjugate acid of said anion having an acidity greater than or equal to that of methane sulfonic acid or p-toluene sulfonic acid; (b) at least one fluorochemical repellent that is suitable for use as a melt additive; and (c) at least one thermoplastic polymer; wherein said blend is a melt blend,
7. A fiber comprising the composition of any of Claims 1 through 6.
8. A fabric comprising the fiber of Claim 7.
9. A film comprising the composition of any of Claims 1 through 6.
10. A molded or blown article comprising the composition of any of Claims 1 through 6.
11. A coating comprising the composition of any of Claims 1 through 6.
12. A topical treatment composition useful in preparing a water- and oil-repellent, antistatic composition of Claim 1 comprising (a) at least one nonpolymeric ionic salt consisting of (i) at least one cation selected from the group consisting of monovalent metal cations, divalent metal cations, and organic onium cations and (ii) at least one weakly coordinating fluoroorganic anion, the conjugate acid of said anion having an acidity greater than or equal to that of a hydrocarbon sulfonic acid, and (b) at least one fluorochemical repellent.
13. A process for preparing a water- and oil-repellent, antistatic composition of Claim 1 comprising the steps of (a) combining (i) at least one nonpolymeric ionic salt consisting of at least one cotton and at least one anion, said cotton being selected from the group consisting of monovalent metal cottons, divalent metal cottons, and organic opium cottons, and said anion being a weakly coordinating anion, the conjugate acid of said anion having an acidity greater than or equal to that of a hydrocarbon sulfanic acid, and with the proviso that said anion is organic or fluoroorganic when said cotton is a metal, (ii) al least one fluorochemical repellent, and (iii) at least one thermoplastic polymer: and (b) melt processing the resulting combination.
14. A process for preparing a water- and oil-repellent, antistatic composition of Claim 1 comprising the steps of (a) combining (t) at least one nonpolymeric ionic salt consisting of at least one canon and at least one anion, said cotton being selected from the group consisting of monovalent metal cottons, divalent metal canons, and organic opium cottons, and said anion being a weakly coordinating anion, the conjugate acid of said anion having an acidity greater than or equal to that of a-hydrocarbon sulfonic acid, and with the proviso that said anion is organic or fluoroorganic when said cotton is a metal, (ii) at least one fluorochemical repellent, and (iii) at least one thermosetting polymer or ceramer or the reactive precursors of said polymer or ceramer; and (b) allowing the resulting combination to cure.
15. A process for preparing a water- and oil-repellent, antistatic composition of Claim 1 comprising the step of applying a topical treatment composition to at least a portion of at least one surface of at least one insulating material, said topical treatment composition comprising (a) at least one nonpolymeric ionic salt consisting of at least one cotton and at least one anion, said cotton being selected from the group consisting of monovalent metal cottons, divalent metal canons, and organic onium cottons, and said anion being a weakly coordinating anion, the conjugate acid of said anion having an acidity greater than or equal to that of a hydrocarbon sulfonic acid, and with the proviso that Said anion is organic or fluoroorganic when said cotton is a metal; and (b) at least~one fluorochemical repellent.
16. A process for coating or casting a water- and oil-repellent, antistatic composition of Claim 1 on a substrate comprising the steps of (a) dissolving (i) at least one nonpolymeric ionic salt consisting of at least one cation and at least one anion, said cation being selected from the group consisting of monovalent metal cations, divalent metal cations, and organic onium cations, and said-anion being a weakly coordinating anion, the conjugate acid of said anion having an acidity greater than or equal to that of a hydrocarbon sulfonic acid, and with the proviso that said anion is organic or fluoroorganic when said cation is a metal, (ii) at least one fluorochemical repellent, and (iii) at least one insulating material in at least one solvent; (b) casting or coating the resulting solution on at least one substrate; and (c) allowing evaporation of said solvent.
17. A process for preparing a water- and oil-repellent, antistatic composition of Claim 1 comprising the steps of (a) combining (i) at least one nonpolymeric ionic salt consisting of at least one cation and at least one anion, said cation being selected from the group consisting of monovalent metal cations, divalent metal cations, and organic onium cations, and said anion being a weakly coordinating anion, the conjugate acid of said anion having an acidify greater than or equal to that of a hydrocarbon sulfonic acid, and with the proviso that said anion is organic or fluoroorganic when said canon is a metal, (ii) at least one fluorochemical repellent, and (iii) at least one monomer; and (b) allowing polymerization of the monomer to occur.
