Abstract

The present invention is directed to ion-sensitive, hard water dispersible polymers. The present invention is also directed to a method of making ion-sensitive, hard water dispersible polymers and their applicability as binder compositions. The present invention is further directed to fiber-containing fabrics and webs comprising ion-sensitive, hard water dispersible binder compositions and their applicability in water dispersible personal care products.

Claims (32)

1. An ion-sensitive polymer, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing up to about 500 ppm of one or more multivalent ions;
and wherein the polymer is not formed from acrylic acid or methacrylic acid monomers.
2. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 1, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing from about 15 ppm to about 200 ppm of one or more multivalent ions.

The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 2, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing from about 15 ppm to about 150 ppm of one or more multivalent ions.

The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 3, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing from about 15 ppm to about 100 ppm of one or more multivalent ions.

The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 4, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing from about 15 ppm to about 50 ppm of one or more multivalent ions.
6. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 1, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing from about 0.5 weight percent to about 5.0 weight percent of the salt.
7. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 1, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing from about 0.5 weight percent to about 3.0 weight percent of the salt.
8. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 1, wherein the multivalent ions comprise Ca2+ ions, Mg2+ ions, Zn2+ ions, or a combination thereof.
9. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 1, wherein the monovalent ions comprise Na+ ions, Li+ ions, K+ ions, NH4+ ions, or a combination thereof.
10. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 1, wherein the polymer is formed from one or more monomers selected from styrenesulfonic acid (SS); sodium salt of styrenesulfonic acid (NaSS); 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), sodium salt of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (NaAMPS); vinylsulfonic acid; sodium salt of vinylsulfonic acid;
sulfonate-containing alkyl acrylates, wherein the alkyl group contains from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; sodium salt of sulfonate-containing alkyl acrylates, wherein the alkyl group contains from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; sulfonate-containing alkyl methacrylates wherein the alkyl group contains from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; and sodium salt of sulfonate-containing alkyl methacrylates wherein the alkyl group contains from 2 to 4 carbon atoms.
11. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 1, wherein the polymer comprises: AMPS or NaAMPS; and one or more alkyl acrylates.
12. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 11, wherein the polymer is formed from at least two of the following monomers:
AMPS or NaAMPS, butyl acrylate, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.
13. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 12, wherein the polymer comprises from about 15 to about 30 mol% AMPS or NaAMPS; from about 70 to about 85 mol% butyl acrylate; and from about 0 to about 15 mol% 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.
14. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 13, wherein the polymer comprises from about 18 to about 23 mol% AMPS or NaAMPS; from about 77 to about 82 mol% butyl acrylate; and from about 0 to about 10 mol% 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.
15. A binder composition for binding fibrous material into an integral web, said binder composition comprising the ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 1.
16. A nonwoven fabric comprising fibrous material and a binder material, wherein the binder material comprising the binder composition of Claim 15.
17. An ion-sensitive polymer formed from at least two monomers selected from the group consisting of AMPS or NaAMPS, butyl acrylate, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate; wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing at leastabout 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing up to about 500 ppm of one or more multivalent ions.
18. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 17, wherein the polymer comprises from about 15 to about 30 mol% AMPS or NaAMPS; from about 70 to about 85 mol% butyl acrylate; and from about 0 to about 15 mol% 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.
19. The ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 18, wherein the polymer comprises from about 18 to about 23 mol% AMPS or NaAMPS; from about 77 to about 82 mol% butyl acrylate; and from about 0 to about 10 mol% 2-ethylhexyl acrylate.
20. A binder composition for binding fibrous material into an integral web, said binder composition comprising the ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 17.
21. A nonwoven fabric comprising fibrous material and a binder material, wherein the binder material comprising the binder composition of Claim 20.
22. A fibrous substrate comprising:
fibrous material; and a binder composition for binding said fibrous material into an integral web, said binder composition comprising an ion-sensitive polymer, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing up to about 500 ppm of one or more multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is not formed from acrylic acid or methacrylic acid monomers.
23. The fibrous substrate of Claim 22, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing from about 15 ppm to about 200 ppm of one or more multivalent ions.
24. The fibrous substrate of Claim 23, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing from about 15 ppm to about 100 ppm of one or more multivalent ions.
25. The fibrous substrate of Claim 23, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing at least about 0.3 weight percent salt, said salt comprising one or more monovalent or multivalent ions; and wherein the polymer is soluble in tap water containing from about 15 ppm to about 50 ppm of one or more multivalent ions.
26. The fibrous substrate of Claim 22, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing from about 0.5 weight percent to about 5.0 weight percent of the salt.
27. The fibrous substrate of Claim 26, wherein the polymer is insoluble in a salt solution containing from about 0.5 weight percent to about 3.0 weight percent of the salt.
28. A water-dispersible article comprising the fibrous substrate of Claim 22.
29. The water-dispersible article of Claim 28, wherein the water-dispersible article comprises a body-side liner, fluid distribution material, fluid in-take material, absorbent wrap sheet, cover stock, or wet wipe.
30. A wet wipe comprising the fibrous substrate of Claim 22.
31. A method of making the ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 1, said method comprising:
polymerizing at least one alkyl acrylate monomer and at least one sulfonate-containing monomer.
32. A method of making the ion-sensitive polymer of Claim 1, said method comprising:
polymerizing at least one alkyl acrylate monomer and at least one additional monomer to form a first polymer; and sulfonating the first polymer.
