Abstract
Injection systems (50) and devices (52, 54) that can be used in injection systems are disclosed.
Claims (68)
1. An injection system, comprising:
an injector defining a first cavity in fluid communication with an orifice configured for needleless injection; and a housing inside the injector and defining a second cavity, the housing different than the injector, wherein the injection system is configured to transfer a fluid from the second cavity to the first cavity.
an injector defining a first cavity in fluid communication with an orifice configured for needleless injection; and a housing inside the injector and defining a second cavity, the housing different than the injector, wherein the injection system is configured to transfer a fluid from the second cavity to the first cavity.
2. The system of claim 1, wherein the injector is formed of a first material, and the housing is formed of a second material different than the first material.
3. The system of claim 2, wherein the first material comprises a polymer.
4. The system of claim 2, wherein the second material comprises a glass.
5. The system of claim 1, further comprising a first movable member between the first cavity and the second cavity.
6. The system of claim 5, wherein the first movable member defines a lumen.
7. The system of claim 5, further comprising a second movable member between the first movable member and the second cavity.
8. The system of claim 7, wherein the first movable member is configured to engage with the second movable member such that the first cavity is in fluid communication with the second cavity.
9. The system of claim 5, wherein the first movable member is configured to be substantially stationary until the first movable member is moved by a propellant of the injection system.
10. The system of claim 5, wherein the first movable member comprises a tab configured to separate from the first movable member at a predetermined force.
11. The system of claim 10, wherein the tab is engaged with the injector.
12. The system of claim 1, wherein the injector and the housing are substantially coaxial.
13. The system of claim 1, wherein the second cavity is defined by the housing and two movable members.
14. The system of claim 1, further comprising an injector cap connectable to the injector, the injector cap configured to move distally to transfer the fluid from the second cavity to the first cavity.
15. The system of claim 14, wherein the injector cap is connectable to the injector by a threaded connection.
16. The system of claim 1, further comprising a charge cup in the injector.
17. The system of claim 16, further comprising a charge in the charge cup.
18. The system of claim 17, wherein the charge comprises at least two discrete materials.
19. The system of claim 18, wherein the at least two discrete materials have different combustion characteristics.
20. The system of claim 1, wherein the second cavity is defined by the housing and a movable member.
21. The system of claim 20, wherein the movable member is formed of two different materials
22. The system of claim 20, wherein the movable member comprises a rubber.
23. A method, comprising:
providing an injection system, comprising:
an injector defining a first cavity in fluid communication with an orifice configured for needleless injection; and a housing inside the injector and defining a second cavity, the housing different than the injector; and reducing the volume of the second cavity to transfer a fluid from the second cavity to the first cavity.
providing an injection system, comprising:
an injector defining a first cavity in fluid communication with an orifice configured for needleless injection; and a housing inside the injector and defining a second cavity, the housing different than the injector; and reducing the volume of the second cavity to transfer a fluid from the second cavity to the first cavity.
24. The method of claim 23, further comprising flowing the fluid through a movable member between the first and second cavities.
25. The method of claim 23, further comprising piercing a member between the first and second cavities.
26. The method of claim 23, wherein the injection system further comprises an injector cap connectable to the injector, and reducing the volume comprises moving the injector cap toward the orifice.
27. The method of claim 26, wherein moving the injector cap comprises twisting the injector cap.
28. The method of claim 23, further comprising moving the fluid through the orifice charge.
29. The method of claim 28, wherein the charge comprises at least two discrete materials.
30. The method of claim 29, wherein the at least two discrete materials have different combustion characteristics.
31. An injection system, comprising:
an injector defining a first cavity in fluid communication with an orifice configured for needleless injection;
a movable member in the first cavity, the movable member defining a second cavity; and a charge in the second cavity.

a movable member in the first cavity, the movable member defining a second cavity; and a charge in the second cavity.
32. The system of claim 31, wherein the second cavity is at a proximal end of the movable member.
33. The system of claim 31, further comprising an electrically conductive member extending at least partially across the charge, the electrically conductive member capable of being in electrical communication with a power source.
34. The system of claim 31, further comprising a power unit connectable to the injector.
35. The system of claim 34, wherein the power unit comprises a battery.
36. The system of claim 31, further comprising a membrane at least partially extending across an opening of the second cavity.
37. The system of claim 31, further comprising a first electrically conductive portion connected to the movable member.
38. The system of claim 37, further comprising a second electrically conductive portion extending through the injector, the second electrically conductive portion in electrical communication with the first electrically conductive portion and capable of being in electrical communication with a power source.
39. The system of claim 31, wherein the charge comprises at least two discrete materials.
40. The system of claim 39, wherein the at least two discrete materials have different combustion characteristics.
41. The system of claim 31, wherein at least a portion of the injector is disposable.
42. The system of claim 34, wherein the power unit is reusable.
43. The system of claim 31, wherein the injector comprises a needleless injector.
44. The system of claim 31, wherein the moveable member comprises a piston.
45. A method of injection, comprising:
activating a charge in a movable member disposed in an injector defining an orifice configured for needleless injection.
activating a charge in a movable member disposed in an injector defining an orifice configured for needleless injection.
46. The method of claim 45, wherein activating the charge includes flowing electrical current through the charge.
47. The method of claim 45, wherein the charge is disposed in a cavity defined by the movable member.
48. The method of claim 47, wherein the cavity is formed at a proximal end of the movable member.
49. The method of claim 45, wherein the charge comprises at least two discrete materials.
50. The method of claim 49, wherein the at least two discrete materials have different combustion characteristics.
51. An injection device, comprising:
an injector defining a first cavity and an orifice;
a movable member in the first cavity;
a housing defining a second cavity proximal of the movable member; and a charge in the second cavity, the charge comprising:
at least two discrete materials.

a housing defining a second cavity proximal of the movable member; and a charge in the second cavity, the charge comprising:
at least two discrete materials.
52. The device of claim 51, wherein the discrete materials have different combustion characteristics.
53. The device of claim 51, wherein the charge comprises at least two layers of materials.
54. The device of claim 53, wherein the at least two layers are adjacent each other.
55. The device of claim 51, wherein the charge comprises at least one trigger.
56. The device of claim 55, wherein the charge comprises at least one propellant.
57. The device of claim 56, wherein the charge comprises at least one passive decay material.
58. The device of claim 51, wherein the charge comprises at least one propellant.
59. The device of claim 51, wherein the charge comprises at least one passive decay material.
60. The device of claim 51, further comprising an electrically conductive member at least partially extending across the charge.
61. The device of claim 51, wherein the movable member and the housing are integrally formed.
62. The device of claim 51, wherein the device is configured for needleless injection.
63. The device of claim 51, wherein the device comprises a needleless injector.
64. The device of claim 51, wherein the charge is electrically activated.
65. A method, comprising:
igniting a charge in an injector having an orifice so that a fluid in a cavity in the injector is ejected out of the cavity, wherein the charge comprises at least two discrete materials.
igniting a charge in an injector having an orifice so that a fluid in a cavity in the injector is ejected out of the cavity, wherein the charge comprises at least two discrete materials.
66. The method of claim 65, wherein the injector orifice is configured for needleless injection.
67. The method of claim 65, wherein the injector comprises a needleless injector.
68. The method of claim 65, further comprising selecting the at least two discrete materials so that the fluid is ejected from the cavity in a predetermined fashion.
