Abstract
The invention relates to a surgical nail (1), in the form of an intramedulla ry nail with a central axis (2), consisting of a material M with a tensile strength Fz, compressive strength Fd, density .rho.2 and an elasticity modul us E. Said nail comprises at least one transversal bore (3), which runs transversally to the central axis (2) and has a cross-sectional profile F an d a transversal axis (4), the cross-sectional profile F having a maximum lengt h a that runs in the direction of the central axis and a maximum width b that runs perpendicular to the length. An insert (10) with a longitudinal axis (1 3) can be introduced into the transversal bore (3). Said insert consists of a material m, which has a lower elasticity modulus e < E than the material M. The insert also has a length L that runs in the direction of its longitudina l axis and conforms to the premise L > 0.2 D.
Claims (16)
1. Surgical pin (1), especially an intramedullary pin, with a central axis (2), which consists of a material M with the tensile strength F z, the compression strength F d, the density .rho.2 and the modulus of elasticity E and at least one transverse borehole (3), extending transversely to the central axis (2), with the cross-sectional profile F and a transverse axis (4), the cross-sectional profile F having a maximum length "a" in the direction of the central axis and, perpendicularly thereto, a maximum width "b", the pin having a diameter D in the region of the transverse borehole (3) and the pin including an insert (10), which can be introduced into the transverse borehole (3), has a longitudinal axis (13) and consists of a material m, which has a lower modulus of elasticity e < E than does the material M, the insert (10) having a length L, which is measured in the direction of its longitudinal axis (13) and fulfills the condition L > 0.2 D, characterized in that the insert (10) comprises a centrally drilled stud (19) with several peripherally disposed, conical expansions (20), which can engage corresponding cavities (21) or the longitudinal borehole (23) in the region of the transverse borehole (3) in the form of a click lock.
2. The pin (1) of claim 1, characterized in that L > 0.5 D and preferably L = D.
3. The pin (1) of claims 1 or 2, characterized in that the insert (10) is essentially congruent with the transverse borehole (3).
4. The pin (1) of claim 1, characterized in that the insert (10) has a borehole (14), which is coaxial with its longitudinal axis (13).
5. The pin (1) of one of the claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the modulus of elasticity e < 0.8 E and preferably e < 0.7 E.
6. The pin (1) of one of the claims 1 to 5, characterized in that the material m has a tensile strength f z < F z.
7. The pin (1) of one of the claims 1 to 6, characterized in that the material m has a compression strength f d < F d.
8. The pin (1) of one of the claims 1 to 7, characterized in that the material m is a biocompatible plastic, preferably a polyethylene or a high molecular weight polyethylene (HMWPE).
9. The pin (1) of one of the claims 1 to 8, characterized in that the plastic is a bio-absorbable polymer or copolymer, preferably a polylactide.
10. The pin of one the claims 1 to 9, characterized in that the transverse borehole (3) is a circular borehole, the cross-sectional profile F
having a maximum length a = b).

11. The pin (1) of one who claims 1 to 10, characterized and that the transverse borehole (3) is constructed as an elongated hole, the cross-sectional profile F having a maximum length a > b.
12. The pin of one of the claims 1 to 11, characterized in that the material m also has a lower density .rho.1 than does the material M of density .rho.2, preferably .quadrature.1 < 0.8 .rho.2.
13. The pin (1) of one of the claims 1 to 12, characterized in that it includes a locking screw or a locking bolt, which can be passed into the transverse borehole (3) through the insert (10) and the shaft of which has a diameter d, which satisfies the condition that a > d < b.
14. The pin (1) of one of the claims 1 to 13, characterized in that the transverse borehole (3) expands in the direction of the surface of the pin (1).
15. The pin (1) of one of the claims 1 to 14, characterized in that it includes a locking screw (20) with a screw shaft (21) and an external thread (22), the diameter d of the screw thread (22) fulfilling the condition that a > d < b and d preferably being at least 5% smaller than the smaller of the two dimensions a, b.
16. The pin (1) of one of the claims 1 to 15, characterized in that the insert (10) consists of a stud (17) with a conically expanded head (18).
