Abstract
This invention relates to an absorbent structure that comprises water-swellable material, which comprises water-swellable polymers that are coated with a coating agent said coating agent comprising a phase-separating elastomeric material, which allows swelling of the water-swellable polymers, without breakage of the coating.
Claims (14)
1. An absorbent structure comprising water-swellable material that comprises water-swellable polymers, coated with a coating agent, wherein said coating agent comprises an elastomeric material that is phase-separating and has at least a first phase with a first glass transition temperature Tg1 and a second phase with a second glass transition temperature Tg2, preferably the difference between Tg1 and Tg2 being at least 30°C.
2. An absorbent structure comprising water-swellable material that comprises water-swellable polymers, coated with a coating agent, said material being obtainable by a process comprising the steps of::
a. obtaining water-swellable polymer particles;
b. simultaneously with or subsequently to step a), applying a coating agent to at least a part of said water-swellable polymer particles; and optionally the step of c. annealing the resulting coated water-swellable polymer particles of step b), to obtain the water-swellable material whereby said coating agent of step b) comprises an elastomeric phase-separating material that has at least a first phase with a first glass transition temperature Tg1 and a second phase with a second glass transition temperature Tg2, preferably the difference between Tg1 and Tg2 being at least 30°C.
a. obtaining water-swellable polymer particles;
b. simultaneously with or subsequently to step a), applying a coating agent to at least a part of said water-swellable polymer particles; and optionally the step of c. annealing the resulting coated water-swellable polymer particles of step b), to obtain the water-swellable material whereby said coating agent of step b) comprises an elastomeric phase-separating material that has at least a first phase with a first glass transition temperature Tg1 and a second phase with a second glass transition temperature Tg2, preferably the difference between Tg1 and Tg2 being at least 30°C.
3. An absorbent structure as in claim 2, whereby the water-swellable material is obtainable by said process whereby in step b) said coating agent and/ or said elastomeric material is wet-extensible and has a wet-elongation at break of at least 400% and a tensile stress at break in the wet state of at least 1MPa, or even at least 5MPa.
4. An absorbent structure as in claim 3, whereby the water-swellable material is obtainable by said process whereby in step b) the coating agent and / or the wet-extensible, elastomeric material has, in the wet state, a wet secant elastic modulus at 400%
elongation (extension) of at least 0.5 MPa, preferably at least 0.75 MPa, most preferably at least about 3MPa.

An absorbent article as in claim 4, whereby the water-swellable material is obtainable by said process whereby in step b) the coating agent and/ or the wet-extensible, elastomeric material has, in the dry state, a dry secant modulus at 400% elongation (SM dry400%) and a wet secant modulus at 400% elongation (SM wet400%) , whereby the ratio of SM wet400% to SM dry400% is between 1.4 to 0.6.
6. An absorbent structure as in any of claims 2 to 5, whereby the water-swellable material is obtainable by said process whereby in step b) said coating agent and/ or said elastomeric material has a Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate (MVTR) of at least 800g/m2/day, or preferably of at least 1500g/m2/day, or even more preferably a MVTR of at least 2100g/m2/day.
7. An absorbent structure as in any preceding claim, whereby said elastomeric phase-separating material has a Tg1 of less than 20°C, preferably less than 0°C
and a Tg2 of more than 50°C, or even more than 60°C.

8. An absorbent structure as in any preceding claim, whereby the elastomeric material is a block copolymeric material, having a molecular weight of at least 50 kDa, preferably at least 70 kDa.
9. An absorbent structure as in claim 8, whereby said coating agent comprises one or more block copolymers of polyurethanes-co-polyethers, polyurethanes-co-polyesters, polyurethane/ureas-co-polyethers, polyurethane/ureas-co-polyester, polystyrene block copolymers.
10. An absorbent structure as in any preceding claim, whereby the coating agent is present in the form of a continuous shell around said water-swellable polymer particle, said shell having an average caliper of 1µm to 50µm, more preferably lam to 20µm or even more preferably 2 to 10µm.
11. An absorbent structure as in claim 10 whereby said shell is uniform with the ratio of smallest to largest caliper from 1:1 to 1:3, preferably from 1:1 and 1:2.
12. An absorbent structure as in any preceding claim which is, or is a part of, a disposable absorbent article, selected from infant diapers, training pants, adult incontinent articles, sanitary napkins, panty-liners, interlabial articles and bandages.
13. An absorbent structure according to any preceding claim obtainable by a) providing a first substrate wrapping material;
b) depositing said water-swellable material onto a first surface of a substrate material, preferably in a pattern comprising at least one zone which is substantially free of water-swellable material, and the pattern comprising at least one zone comprising water-swellable material, preferably such that openings are formed between the separate zones with water-swellable material; optionally c) depositing a thermoplastic material onto said first surface of the substrate material and onto the water-swellable material, such that portions of the thermoplastic material are in direct contact with the first surface of the substrate and portions of the thermoplastic material are in direct contact with the water-swellable material;
d) folding the substrate material over, to cover the water-swellable material on the substrate material of step b) or c); and/ or placing another substrate wrapping matter over the water-swellable material on the substrate material of step b) or c).
b) depositing said water-swellable material onto a first surface of a substrate material, preferably in a pattern comprising at least one zone which is substantially free of water-swellable material, and the pattern comprising at least one zone comprising water-swellable material, preferably such that openings are formed between the separate zones with water-swellable material; optionally c) depositing a thermoplastic material onto said first surface of the substrate material and onto the water-swellable material, such that portions of the thermoplastic material are in direct contact with the first surface of the substrate and portions of the thermoplastic material are in direct contact with the water-swellable material;
d) folding the substrate material over, to cover the water-swellable material on the substrate material of step b) or c); and/ or placing another substrate wrapping matter over the water-swellable material on the substrate material of step b) or c).
14. A disposable absorbent article comprising a topsheet and a backsheet and therein between the absorbent structure according to any preceding claim.
