Abstract

A stent graft with at least one fenestration including a peripheral reinforcement around at least part of the fenestration. There can also be a tubular extension. The side arm includes a stent and a cover and extends from and is in fluid communication with the fenestration and the stent graft. The stent may be a self expanding stent. The ring and/or tubular extension provides better support and sealing for an extension arm. The fenestration can be circular or if towards the ends of the stent graft may be in the form of a U-shape with an open end.

Claims (16)

1. A stent graft comprising a tubular wall of a biocompatible graft material, a plurality of zig zag stents along the length of the tubular wall and at least one fenestration in the tubular wall, characterized in that the at least one fenestration includes a periphery and a resilient stabilizing wire separate from the zig zag stent and fitted around at least a portion of the periphery, the resilient wire providing dimensional stability to the fenestration.
2. A stent graft as in Claim 1 characterized in that the resilient wire is selected from Nitinol .TM. or stainless steel.
3. A stent graft as in Claim 1 characterized in that the resilient wire is in a form selected from at least one of a ring, a spring, and a partial ring.
4. A stent graft as in Claim 1 characterized in that the fenestration is in a form selected from at least one of a scallop or a circular aperture.
5. A stent graft as in Claim 1 characterized in that the fenestration is adjacent an end of the stent graft the fenestration is in the form of a scallop which is open at one side.
6. A stent graft as in Claim 5 characterized in that the resilient wire around the periphery of the fenestration is in the form of a U-shape and during deployment assists with opening up of the fenestration.
7. A stent graft as in Claim 1 characterized in that the resilient wire around the periphery is in the form of a ring.
8. A stent graft as in Claim 7 characterized in that the ring includes at least two turns of wire.
9. A stent graft as in Claim 8 characterized in that the terminal ends of the wire of the ring are provided with a loop so that the wire does not present a pointed end of wire which could damage a vessel.
10. A stent graft as in Claim 1 characterized in that the fenestration includes a tubular extension extending from the tubular wall and the peripheral resilient wire is in the form of a ring at an outer end of the tubular extension.
11. A stent graft as in Claim 10 characterized in that the tubular extension includes a self expanding stent.
12. A stent graft as in Claim 10 characterized in that the tubular extension includes at least one of an associated lining and covering of a biocompatible graft material.
13. A stent graft as in Claim 11 characterized in that the self expanding stent on the tubular extension is in the form of a Gianturco style zig zag Z stent.
14. A stent graft as in Claim 11 characterized in that the self expanding stent on the tubular extension is a Nitinol .TM. self expanding stent.
15. A stent graft as in Claim 14 characterized in that the bio-compatible graft material is at least one of on the inside or the outside of the stent on the tubular extension.
16. A stent graft as in Claim 10 characterized in that the tubular extension or tubular extensions are placed on a reduced diameter portion of the stent graft so that the overall diameter of the stent graft is not significantly affected.
