Abstract

A securing system (10) and method including an article holder portion having at least two separable portions (12, 16); a mount portion (14) adapted for carrying at least one of the separable portions of the holder portion; and optionally at least one sensor (52, 54) for monitoring the article and providing an output signal indicative of article tampering. The article is a trigger operated device such as a gun.

Claims (71)

1. An article securing device comprising:
a mount portion adapted to be attached to a support structure; and a removable holder portion separate from the mount portion and adapted to be securingly engaged to the mount portion for assisting in holding an article, at least one of the removable holder portion or mount portion carrying an actuator for allowing the securing engagement.
2. The securing device according to claim 1, wherein the mount portion is adapted to be permanently attached to the support structure or removably attached to the support structure.
3. The securing device according to claims 1 or 2, wherein the support structure is selected from one or more of a wall, a floor, a ceiling, a horizontal work surface, a door, a decorative trim panel, a piece of furniture, a storage container, a countertop, a drawer, a stud, a vehicle body in white, a vehicle trim, a vehicle frame, or any combination thereof.

The securing device according to any of claims 1 through 3, wherein the mount portion consists essentially of a single integrated piece structure or includes a plural piece structure, and is attachable to the support structure using at least one fastener, adhesive, weld, mechanical interlock, latch, hook, dead bolt lock, cam lock or any combination thereof.
5. The securing device of any of claims 1 through 3, wherein the removable holder portion securingly engages the mount portion by way of a lockable mating engagement.
6. The device according to claim 5, wherein the lockable engagement is by way of a keyed lock, a combination lock, an electronically controlled lock, an actuatable member or a combination thereof.
7. The device according to claims 1 through 6, wherein the holder portion includes a resilient surface.
8. The device according to any of claims 1 through 7, wherein the holder portion, the mount portion or both includes at least one sensor for detecting separation of the holder portion from the mount portion.
9. The device according to claim 8, wherein at least one sensor is in signaling communication with a monitored securing system.
10. The device according to any of claims 1 through 7, wherein the holder portion or the mount portion includes a projection that is adapted for insertion into an aperture in the other of the holder portion or the mount portion and includes a surface configuration on the projection for engagement with an opposing surface of a wall defining the aperture.
11. The device according to claim 10, wherein the projection includes a rotatable member partially enclosed in a sleeve and having teeth as the surface configuration.
12. The device according to any of claims 1 through 11, wherein at least one of the mount portions or the holder portions is adapted for carrying a trigger operated device.
13. The device according to claim 12, wherein the trigger operated device is a gun.
14. The device according to any of claims 1 through 13, wherein the mount portion includes at least one removable member adapted for receiving the removable holder portion.
15. The device according to any of claims 1 through 14, wherein the mount portion is adapted for permanent attachment to the support structure and includes no visible attachments once attached to the support structure.
16. The device according to claim 8, wherein the sensor is in signaling communication with a timer for controlling the timing of signal transmission.
17. Use of a device according to any of claims 4 through 16 for securing a trigger operated device.
18. Use of a device according to claim 17, wherein the trigger operated device is a gun.
19. A method of using a securing device comprising providing a device according to any of claims 1 through 16, mounting the mount portion to the support structure, securingly engaging the removable holder portion to the mount portion, locating an object to be secured at least partially between the mount portion, and the holder portion; and thereafter removing the object to be secured by separating the holder portion from the mount portion.
20. The method of claim 19, wherein the object to be secured is a gun.
21 A securing system, comprising:
a trigger operated device holder portion having at least two separable portions;
a mounting portion adapted for carrying at least one of the separable portions of the holder portion;
at least one sensor for monitoring relative positioning of the at least two separable portions and providing an output signal indicative of the relative positioning; and a receiver in signaling communication with the at least one sensor, the securing system including at least one intrusion detector and a receiver for receiving the output signal provided from the sensor.
22. The securing system of claim 21, wherein one of the separable portions of the holder portion is integrally formed in the mounting portion.
23. The securing system of claim 21, wherein one of the separable portions of the holder portion is permanently attached to the mounting portion by a mechanical joint, an adhesive joint or both.
24. The securing system of claim 21, further comprising a receiver in signaling communication with the at least one sensor.
25. The securing system of any of claims 21 through 24 wherein the at least two separable portions are lockingly engageable with each other.
26. The securing system of claim 25, wherein one of the separable portions carries an actuator for locking or unlocking the portions to each other.
27. The securing system of claim 26, wherein the actuator is selected from a keyed lock, a combination lock, an electronically controlled lock, an actuatable member or a combination thereof.
28. The securing system of any of claims 21 through 27, wherein the mounting portion is adapted with mounting hardware for temporary mounting to a support structure selected from a mounting member adapted for attachment to a surface and carrying at least one of the separable portions of the trigger detent mechanism;
at least one battery operated wireless sensor including a first portion including a magnet, and a second portion separable from the first portion, a sensor circuit board located in either or both of the first or second portions, the first portion or the second portion being at least partially recessed within the mounting member for monitoring relative positioning of the at least two separable portions and providing an output signal indicative of the relative positioning to a remote location of at least 100 feet; and a securing system in signaling communication with the at least one sensor, the securing system including at least one intrusion detector and a control panel for receiving the output signal provided from the sensor.
29. The securing system of any of claims 21 through 27, wherein the mounting portion includes mounting hardware that is concealed from view when mounted to a support structure.
30. The securing system of claim 28 or claim 29, wherein the mounting hardware includes a male projection including at least two spreadable jaws and a female receptacle into which the male projection is securingly insertable.
31. A securing system, comprising:
a gun trigger detent mechanism having at least two separable portions that are matingly engagable with each other and include a resilient surface in regions that are to be in contact with a portion of a gun;
a mounting member adapted for attachment to a surface and carrying at least one of the separable portions of the trigger detent mechanism;
at least one battery operated wireless sensor including a first portion including a magnet, and a second portion separable from the first portion, a sensor circuit board located in either or both of the first or second portions, the first portion or the second portion being at least partially recessed within the mounting member for monitoring relative positioning of the at least two separable portions and providing an output signal indicative of the relative positioning to a remote location of at least 100 feet; and a securing system in signaling communication with the at least one sensor, the securing system including at least one intrusion detector and a control panel for receiving the output signal provided from the sensor.
32. The system of claim 31, wherein the mounting member is adapted for mounting flush with a surface of the structure to which it is mounted.
33. The system of claims 31 or 32, wherein the system further includes a decorative cover for concealing components of the system.
34. The system of any of claims 31 through 33, wherein mounting member includes hardware to mount it to the support structure so that the mounting hardware is concealed from view when mounted.
35. A method for operating a securing system, comprising:
providing a gun sensing device including a gun holder portion having at least two separable portions and a mount portion adapted for carrying at least one of the separable portions of the gun holder portion;
sensing a secure positioning of a gun held between the separable portions; and providing an output signal indicative of tampering with the secure positioning.
36. The method of claim 35, wherein the sensing is performed by a magnet.
37. The method of claim 35, wherein the sensing is performed by thermal detection.
38. The method of any of claims 35 through 37 further comprising monitoring the output signal from a remote location.
39. The method of any of claims 35 through 38 wherein one of the separable portions of the gun holder portion is integrally formed with the mount portion.
40. The method of any of claims 35 through 39 wherein the providing step includes retrofitting an existing residential security system, a commercial security system, a mobile security system or any combination thereof.
41. The method of any of claims 35 through 40, further comprising covering the securing device with a camouflaged structure for resembling a common household article.
42. The method of any of claims 35 through 41, wherein the separable portions are locked together using a keyed lock, a combination lock, an electronically controlled lock, an actuatable member or any combination thereof.
43. The method of any of claims 35 through 42, further comprising triggering an audible alarm.
44. The method of any of claims 35 through 43, wherein the gun holder portion includes a rotatable male portion and an opposing female portion, both of which include teeth for opposing locking engagement with each other.
45. A method for retrofitting an existing securing system, comprising the steps of:
a) providing an existing securing system including at least one circuit; and b) incorporating with the at least ore circuit an article securing device comprising;
i) a mount portion;
ii) an article holder portion; and iii) a sensor for detecting positioning of the mount portion relative to the article holder portion.
46. The method of claim 45, wherein the sensor is a wireless sensor.
47. The method of claim 45 or 46, wherein the article holder portion includes an actuator for affording locking engagement of the article holder portion with the mount portion.
48. The method of any of claims 45 through 47, wherein the article holder portion includes at least two separable portions.
49. The method of any of claims 45 through 48 wherein the at least two separable portions are formed independent of the mount portion.
50. The method of claim 49, wherein the mount portion is part of the existing securing system.
51. The method of claims 49 or 50, wherein at least one of the separable portions is attached to the mount portion during the incorporating step.
52. The method of any of claims 45 through 51, wherein the existing securing system is an installed system prior to the providing step.
53. The method of any of claims 45 through 52, further comprising the step of remotely monitoring the securing system.
54. The method of any of claims 45 through 53, further comprising a step of offering a selling price discounted or other incentive to a customer to encourage the sale of the system.
55. The method of claim 54, wherein the article securing device is a gun securing device and the discount or incentive is selected from a discount on system installation service fees, a discount on hardware purchase or lease price, a discount on insurance rates, a discount on price of monitoring services, or any combination thereof.
56. The method of any of claims 45 through 55, wherein the existing securing, system is selected from a residential security system, a commercial security system, a mobile security system or any combination thereof.
57. A gun securing device, comprising:
a removable holder for carrying a gun, the removable holder including a first component and second component that are adapted to matingly engage each other and block depression of a trigger;

a mount portion adapted to be fixedly attached to a support structure and securingly engage the removable holder; and an actuator mounted to the removable holder or mount portion for releasably engaging the other of the removable holder or mount portion, wherein upon engagement the gun becomes releasably attached to the mount portion.
58. The device according to claim 57, wherein the removable holder, the mount portion or both includes at least one sensor for detecting separation of the removable holder and mount portion.
59. The device according to claim 58, wherein at least one sensor is in signaling communication with a monitored securing system.
60. The device of any of claims 57 through 59, wherein the mount portion further includes a cover for concealing components of the gun securing device.
61. The device of any of claims 57 through 60, wherein the actuator comprises a keyed lock, a combination lock, an electronically controlled lock or a combination thereof.
62. The device of any of claims 57 through 61, wherein the mount portion forms an opening for receiving at least a portion of the removable holder.
63. The device of any of claims 57 through 62, wherein the removable holder further includes an opening for receiving a portion of the actuator.
64. A gun securing device, comprising:
a mount portion including a first portion adapted for carrying a first lock and mounting to a surface, and a second portion for covering at least a portion of the first portion and for providing access to the first lock;
a removable holder portion adapted for carrying a gun and blocking depression of a trigger of the gun, the holder portion adapted for engaging the first lock and for permitting the holder portion to be detached from the mount portion, for allowing removal of the gun from the holder portion while at least part of the holder portion remains engaged with the mount portion, or both.
65. The device according to claim 64, wherein the lock comprises a keyed lock, a combination lock, a deadbolt lock, an electronically controlled lock, an actuatable member or a combination thereof.
66. The device according to claims 64 or 65, wherein the second portion defines a first opening for receiving a portion of the first lock.
67. The device according to any of claims 64 through 66, wherein the second portion defines a second opening for receiving a portion of the removable holder portion.
68. The device according to claim 67, wherein the second portion includes walls surrounding the second opening formed in the mount portion for guiding the removable holder to a region adjacent to the first lock.
69. The device according to claim 68, wherein the removable holder, the mount portion or both includes at least one senso for detecting separation of the removable holder and mount portion.
70. The device according to any of claims 64 through 69, wherein the removable holder includes an engaging feature for engaging with the first lock.
71. The device according to any of claims 64 through 70, wherein the second portion includes a first opening for receiving at least a portion of the first lock, and a second opening for receiving at least a portion of the removable holder, and wherein the first lock comprises a keyed lock having a key opening accessible through the first opening and includes a retractable tongue for engaging a recess portion of the removable holder when the removable holder is inserted into the second opening, and further including a sensor located on the mount portion, removable holder or both for detecting separation of at least part of the removable holder and the mount portion.
