Abstract

An apparatus for the location of an object of value, such as a vehicle, includes a cell phone disposed in the vehicle and under microprocessor (16) control. The cell phone (12) is adapted to call an owner on detection of an alarm condition (30) as well as to place a call to 911. The cell phone, according to a preferred embodiment, places the call to 911 under command by the owner and then establishes a three-way conference call between the owner (34) and a 911 dispatcher who answers the 911 call. Other methods of creating the conference call and of using the apparatus are disclosed including call transfer and call relay modes of operation. Other features, including GPS
coordinate acquisition and transmission, are described.

Claims (24)

1. An emergency conference calling system, comprising:
(a) means for establishing a first real-time communication intermediate a cellular phone disposed in a mobile object and 911; and (b) means for establishing a second real-time communication concurrent with at least a portion of an active time of said first real-time communication intermediate said 911 and an owner of said mobile object.
2. The emergency conference calling system of claim 1 wherein said first real-time communication includes a call to said 911 that is placed by said cellular phone.
3. The emergency conference calling system of claim 2 wherein said call to said 911 includes a prerecorded message that said system transmits to said 911.
4. The emergency conference calling system of claim 1 wherein said first real-time communication includes a call to said cellular telephone that is placed by said 911.
5. The emergency conference calling system of claim 4 wherein said first real-time communication is a first half of a three-way conference call.
6. The emergency conference calling system of claim 5 wherein said second real-time communication is a second half of said three-way conference call.
7. The emergency conference calling system of claim 2 wherein said first real-time communication includes a call to said cellular telephone that is placed by said 911.
8. The emergency conference calling system of claim 7 wherein said first real-time communication is a first half of a three-way conference call.
9. The emergency conference calling system of claim 8 wherein said second real-time communication is a second half of said three-way conference call.
10. The emergency conference calling system of claim. 1 wherein said second real-time communication is a first half of a three-way conference call.
11. The emergency conference calling system of claim 10 wherein said first real-time communication is a second half of said three-way conference call.
12. The emergency conference calling system of claim 10 wherein said second real-time communication includes a call to said owner that is placed by said 911.
13. The emergency conference calling system of claim 10 wherein said second real-time communication includes a call to said owner that is placed by said cellular telephone.
14. The emergency conference calling system of claim 1 wherein said first real-time communication and said second real time communication includes a three-way conference call.
15. The emergency conference calling system of claim 1 wherein said first real-time communication and said second real-time communication includes a transfer type of a call.
16. The emergency conference calling system of claim 1 wherein said first real-time communication and said second real time communication includes a relay type of a call.
17. The emergency conference calling system of claim 1 wherein said first real-time communication is placed by said cellular telephone in response to an occurrence of an alarm condition in said mobile object.
18. The emergency conference calling system of claim 17 wherein said mobile object includes a vehicle.
19. The emergency conference calling system of claim 18 wherein said alarm condition includes detection of an accident by said vehicle and wherein said detection includes detection of an activation of an air bag of said vehicle.
20. The emergency conference calling system of claim 1 wherein said second real-time communication includes an ability of said owner to speak to a 911 dispatcher and of said 911 dispatcher to speak to said owner.
21. A method for determining an approximate location of a mobile object, comprising the steps of:
(a) providing means for establishing a first real-time communication intermediate a cellular phone disposed in a mobile object and 911;
(b) providing means for establishing a second real-time communication concurrent with at least a portion of an active time of said first real-time communication intermediate said 911 and an owner of said mobile object;
and (c) establishing said first real-time communication or said second real-time communication subsequent to a determination of a need to locate said mobile object.
22. The method of claim 21, wherein said step (c) includes, for said second real-time communication, permitting an owner of said mobile object to speak with a 911 dispatcher.
23. An emergency conference calling system, comprising:
(a) means for establishing a first real-time communication intermediate a cellular phone disposed in a mobile object and 911; and (b) means for establishing a second real-time communication concurrent with at least a portion of an active time of said first real-time communication intermediate said cellular phone and an owner of said mobile object.
24. The emergency conference calling system of claim 23, further including means for establishing a third real-time communication concurrent with at least a portion of an active time of said first real-time communication intermediate said owner and 911.
