Abstract

A system and process for treating water are described. Water may be purified by passing feed water through a carbon filter (10), a particulate filter (20), and an electrochemical deionization device (30). The water may be suitable for cooking, washing, and beverage production.

Claims (53)

1. A method of purifying water comprising:
providing feed water;
reducing hardness of the water to a range of 5 - 100 ppm as CaCO3;
reducing alkalinity of the water to a range of 10 - 100 ppm as CaCO3; and supplying the water of reduced alkalinity and reduced hardness as purified water for human consumption.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein the hardness and alkalinity ranges are obtained without blending a purified water having hardness of less than 5 ppm or a purified water having an alkalinity of less than 10 ppm.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein at no time does any portion of the purified water have a hardness of less than 5 ppm or an alkalinity of less than 10 ppm.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the purified water has a pH of 6.5 - 8.5.
5. The method of claim 1 wherein the purified water has a TDS level of 10 -200 ppm.
6. The method of claim 1 wherein the hardness is reduced to a range of 10 -100 ppm CaCO3.
7. The method of claim 1 wherein the alkalinity is reduced to 30 - 80 ppm CaCO3.
8. The method of claim 1 wherein the alkalinity is reduced to 30 - 50 ppm CaCO3.
9. The method of claim 1 wherein hardness is removed from the feed water without chemical ion exchange.
10. The method of claim 1 further comprising pretreating the feed water.
11. The method of claim 10 wherein pretreating is selected from particle filtering, chemical filtering, flocculating, aerating, disinfecting and chemical treatment.
12. The method of claim 1 wherein reducing hardness and reducing alkalinity are performed by the same device.
13. The method of claim 12 wherein the device is an electrochemical deionization device.
14. The method of claim 1 further comprising supplying reduced hardness water to a fountain beverage device.
15. The method of claim 1 wherein the hardness of the purified water is maintained in a range of +/- 20 ppm.
16. The method of claim 1 wherein the alkalinity of the purified water is maintained in a range of +/- 20 ppm.
17. The method of claim 13 wherein a controller varies process conditions of the electrochemical deionization device in response to purified water quality.
18. The method of claim 1 wherein the purified water has a conductivity greater than about 20 S/cm.
19. The method of claim 1 wherein water is purified absent an RO device.
20. The method of claim 1 further comprising post-treating the purified water by disinfecting.
21. The method of claim 20 further comprising disinfecting the purified water with ultraviolet light.
22. The method of claim 1 further comprising disinfecting the purified water with microfiltration.
23. A water treatment system comprising:
a feed water inlet;
an electrochemical deionization device in fluid communication with the feed water inlet and with a feed water outlet; and a beverage production device in fluid communication with the feed water outlet.
24. The water treatment system of claim 23 further comprising a carbon filter upstream of the electrochemical deionization device.
25. The water treatment system of claim 24 wherein the beverage production device is a fountain beverage production device.
26. The water treatment system of claim 23 further comprising a particulate filter upstream of the electrochemical deionization device.
27. The water treatment system of claim 23 wherein the feed water inlet is in communication with a source of tap water.
28. The water treatment system of claim 27 wherein the feed water is fed directly to a carbon filter.
29. The water treatment system of claim 23 wherein the feed water is chlorinated.
30. The water treatment system of claim 23 wherein the electrochemical deionization device is in fluid communication with the purified water outlet via a conduit having a volume of less than one liter.
31. The water treatment system of claim 23 wherein the system is heat sanitizable.
32. The water treatment system of claim 23 wherein the electrochemical deionization device is heat sanitizable.
33. The water treatment system of claim 23 wherein the electrochemical deionization device is in communication with a controller.
34. The water treatment system of claim 33 wherein the controller is constructed and arranged to adjust one or more process conditions of the electrochemical deionization device in response to purified water quality.
35. The water treatment system of claim 34 wherein the one or more process conditions is selected from the group consisting of voltage, amperage, flow rate and reversal cycle.
36. The water treatment system of claim 34 wherein the controller is in communication with a conductivity detector.
37. A method for purifying water for beverage production comprising the steps of:
supplying feed water to an electrochemical deionization device to produce a purified water stream; and feeding the purified water stream to a beverage production device.
38. The method of claim 37 wherein the purified water stream is immediately used to produce a fountain beverage.
39. The method of claim 37 wherein the feed water is tap water.
40. The method of claim 37 further comprising passing the feed water through a carbon filter.
41. The method of claim 37 further comprising passing the feed water through a particulate filter.
42. The method of claim 37 wherein the feed water contains greater than about 500 ppm total dissolved solids and the purified stream contains less than about 200 ppm total dissolved solids.
43. The method of claim 37 wherein the feed water contains greater than about 300 ppm hardness and the purified stream contains less than about 100 ppm hardness and greater than about 10 ppm hardness.
44. The method of claim 37 wherein the feed water contains greater than about 200 ppm alkalinity and the purified stream contains less than about 100 ppm alkalinity and greater than about 10 ppm alkalinity.
45. The method of claim 37 further comprising monitoring a quality of the purified water stream.
46. The method of claim 45 wherein the quality monitored is conductivity.
47. The method of claim 45 further comprising the step of adjusting one or more process conditions of the electrochemical deionization device in response to the quality of the purified water stream.
48. The method of claim 47 wherein the one or more process conditions is selected from the group consisting of voltage, amperage, flow rate, and reversal cycle.
49. The method of claim 37, wherein the beverage production device is a fountain beverage production device.
50. The method of claim 37 further comprising storing purified water for greater than one minute before feeding the purified water stream to a beverage production device.
51. The method of claim 37 wherein the purified water stream is fed to the beverage production device in less than one minute after producing the purified water stream.
52. The method of claim 37 wherein the purified water stream comprises less than 100 mg/L and greater than 10 mg/L total dissolved solids.
53. The method of claim 47 wherein one or more process conditions are adjusted to reduce the purity of the purified water stream.
