Abstract

An apparatus and method for coating pipelines with a hot melt adhesive coating and a tape. The coating may comprise a copolymer of an alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer in combination with a diene polymer and the tape to overly the coating may comprise a polymeric backing. Furthermore, the tape may also include a pressure sensitive adhesive.

Claims (35)

1. A protection system for pipelines comprising:

a coating comprising a copolymer of an alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer in combination with a diene polymer; and a tape to overly said coating, comprising a polymeric backing.
2. The system of claim 1 wherein said alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer comprises polyisobutylene.
3. The system of claim 1 wherein said diene polymer comprises polyisoprene.
4. The system of claim 1 wherein said alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer comprises polyisobutylene and said diene polymer comprises polyisoprene.
5. The system of claim 4 wherein said alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer is present at levels of 90 % or greater, and said polyisoprene is present at levels of about 10 % or less.
6. The system of claim 1 wherein said polymer backing comprises a polyolefin polymer.
7. The system of claim 6 wherein said polyolefin polymer comprises polyethylene.
8. The system of claim 6 wherein said polyolefin polymer comprises a blend of high density polyethylene and low density polyethylene.
9. The system of claim 8 wherein said high density polyethylene has a density of equal to or greater than about 0.94 g/cc.
10. The system of claim 8 wherein said low density polyethylene has a density of less than or equal to about 0.92 g/cc.
11. The system of claim 8 wherein said high density polyethylene is present at levels of about 10-90% (wt.) and said low density polyethylene is present at levels of about 90-10% (wt.).
12. The system of claim 1 wherein said tape includes a pressure sensitive adhesive, wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive contacts said coating.
13. The system of claim 12 wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive comprises a butyl rubber which can be adhered to said coating upon application of pressure.
14. The system of claim 12 wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive has a viscosity greater than that of said coating.
15. The system of claim 1 wherein said alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer in combination with a diene polymer has a viscosity of equal to or less than about 40,000 cps at 4250C.
16. The system of claim 1 wherein said alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer in combination with a diene polymer is characterized as follows:

viscosity at 250°F 20,000 centipoise or greater viscosity at 300°F 3000 centipoise or greater.
17. A protection system for pipelines comprising:

a coating comprising a hot melt adhesive; and a tape to overly said coating, comprising a polymeric backing, wherein the viscosity of said hot melt adhesive is at or below about 40,000 cps at 425°F.
18. The system of claim 17 wherein said hot melt adhesive is an alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer in combination with a diene polymer.
19. The system of claim 17 wherein said polymer backing comprises a polyolefin backing.
20. The system of claim 17 wherein said tape includes a pressure sensitive adhesive.
21. The system of claim 20 wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive comprises a butyl rubber which can be adhered to said coating upon application of pressure.
22. A method of applying corrosion and mechanical protection to a pipeline comprising:

providing a substrate having a surface;

applying a hot melt adhesive onto said substrate surface, said hot melt adhesive having a viscosity of equal to or less than about 40,000 cps. at 425°F;
and applying a tape to said hot melt adhesive, said tape having a polymeric backing.
23. The method of claim 22 wherein said step of applying said hot melt adhesive further comprises heating said hot melt adhesive between 300°F to 450°F and directing said hot melt adhesive through an orifice onto said substrate surface.
24. The method of claim 22 wherein said step of applying said hot melt adhesive comprises spraying said hot melt adhesive onto said substrate surface.
25. The method of claim 24 wherein said step of spraying comprises supplying a spraying device including a die wherein said die comprises one or a plurality of openings having a length of about 0.005 to 0.50 inches and a width of about 0.005 to 0.50 inches.
26. The method of claim 22 further comprising preconditioning said substrate wherein preconditioning said substrate surface includes the step of blasting said substrate.
27. The method of claim 22 wherein said substrate is a steel pipe.
28. The method of claim 22 wherein said substrate further comprises an outer surface, and a layer disposed on said outer surface wherein said layer is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyurethane and epoxy.
29. The method of claim 22 wherein said hot melt adhesive is an alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer in combination with a diene polymer.
30. The method of claim 29 wherein said alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer comprises polyisobutylene.
31. The method of claim 29 wherein said diene polymer comprises polyisoprene.
32. The method of claim 29 wherein said alkyl substituted hydrocarbon polymer is present at levels of 90% or greater, and said diene polymer is present at levels of about 10% or less.
33. The method of claim 22 wherein said polymeric backing comprises a polyethylene selected from the group consisting of low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene and blends thereof.
34. The method of claim 22 wherein said tape includes a pressure sensitive adhesive, wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive contacts said hot melt adhesive.
35. The method of claim 34 wherein said pressure sensitive adhesive comprises a butyl rubber.
