Abstract

A method of forming a film resistant to blocking including the steps of providing a polymeric film having a first and second surface, applying an anti-blocking agent in a fluid or molten state to at least the first surface of the polymeric film so as to form a treated film, gathering the treated film, and separating the gathered film so as to result in the detachment of at least some portion of the gathered film that was in contact with itself.

Claims (24)

1) A method of forming a film resistant to blocking, said method comprising the steps of:
a) providing a polymeric film having a first surface and a second surface, b) applying an anti-blocking agent in a fluid or molten state to at least the first surface of the polymeric film so as to form a treated film with a formation of the anti-blocking agent disposed on the treated film, and c) gathering the treated film to form a gathered film, and d) separating the gathered film so as to result in the detachment of at least some portion of the gathered film that was in contact with itself.
2) The method of Claim 1 wherein the polymeric film comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyvinylarenes, styrenic block copolymers, polyolefins, metalloceno-catalyzed polyolefins, polyesters, polyurethanes, polyether amides, and combinations thereof.
3) The method of Claim 1 wherein the anti-blocking agent comprises a material selected from the group consisting of a phase change solvent, a wax, and combinations thereof.
4) The method of Claim 1 wherein the anti-blocking agent comprises a wax selected from the group consisting of animal-based waxes, vegetable-based waxes, petroleum-based waxes, synthetic waxes, mineral-based waxes, and combinations thereof.
5) The method of Claim 1 wherein the anti-blocking agent comprises a wax which exhibits a property selected from the group consisting of:
a) a Mettler drop point equal to or greater than about 60°C, b) a density from about 0.85 to about 0.98 g/cm3, c) a melt index at 190°C from about 1g to about 5,000 g per 10 minutes, and d) combinations thereof.
6) The method of Claim 1 wherein the anti-blocking agent is substantially acrylic free.
7) The method of Claim 1 wherein the step of applying the anti-blocking agent is performed by an applicator, wherein said applicator is selected from the group consisting of gravure rolls, reverse rolls, knife-over rolls, metering rods, slot extruders, immersion baths, curtain coaters, spray applicators, pneumatic sprayers, airless sprayers, air-assisted airless sprayers, high-volume/low-pressure sprayers, air knife coaters, co-extruders, and combinations thereof.
