Abstract

A gripping tool includes a body assembly and gripping assembly with a grip surface adapted to move from a retracted position to an engaged position to radially engage a work piece in response to relative axial displacement. A
linkage is provided to act between the body assembly and the gripping assembly which, upon relative rotation in at least one direction, of the body relative to the grip surface results in relative axial displacement of the grip surface to activate the gripping elements. This tool was developed for use on drilling and service rigs having top drives, and supports rapid engagement and release, hoisting, pushing, and rotating.

a linkage between the at least one body and the gripping assembly which, upon relative rotation in at least one direction of the load adaptor relative to the grip surface results in relative axial displacement of the at least one body relative to the grip surface to move the grip surface from the retracted position to the engaged position.
2. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 1, wherein a mechanical latch is provided for selectively locking the at least one body to the gripping assembly to prevent relative axial and rotational movement of the at least one body and the gripping assembly , when the grip surface is in the retracted position.
3. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 2, wherein a fluid activated latch release is provided that uses fluid pressure to create relative movement to release the mechanical latch, thereby permitting the grip surface to move from the retracted position to the engaged position.
4. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 2, wherein the mechanical latch includes at least one cam pair with a cam follower and a cam, one of the cam follower or cam having a hook and the other of the cam follower or cam having a recessed cavity with a hook receiver, the at least one body being locked to the gripping assembly when the grip surface is in the retracted position by inserting the hook into the recessed cavity and bringing the hook into engagement with the hook receiver by relative rotation of the at least one body and the gripping assembly.
5. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 4, wherein a fluid activated latch release is provided that uses fluid pressure to create relative movement to release the mechanical latch, the latch release including a first clutch profile on the at least one body and a second clutch profile coupled to one of the cam or the cam follower, the latch release causing relative axial movement to bring the first clutch profile and the second clutch profile into engagement, which engagement initiates rotation of one of the cam or the cam follower to move the hook out of engagement with the hook receiver, thereby permitting the grip surface to move from the retracted position to the engaged position.
6. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 1, wherein means are provided to bias the gripping surface into the engaged position.
7. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 6, wherein the means to bias the gripping surface into the engaged position is one of a spring or gas pressure.
8. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 7, wherein a fluid activated retraction system is provided that uses fluid pressure to create relative movement to overcome the biasing force of the spring.
9. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 1, wherein a torque arm shaft brake is provided to react against relative rotation in at least one direction of the load adaptor relative to the grip surface without reaction with the work piece.
10. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 1, wherein the grip surface is adapted to move from the retracted position to the engaged position to radially engage the interior surface of the work piece.
11. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 1, wherein the grip surface is adapted to move from the retracted position to the engaged position to radially engage the exterior surface of the work piece

17. The gripping tool as defined in Claims 10, 11 or 12, wherein the gripping assembly has jaws carrying the grip surface, the jaws being linked to move axially in unison and spaced circumferentially in relation to the work piece by a cage.
18. The gripping tool as defined in Claim 17, wherein the grip surface engages the exterior of the work piece and the at least one body has a tapered interior surface or surfaces that defines an annular wedge structure, and the gripping assembly includes jaws and a cage serving to link the jaws, the cage having an exterior surface and an interior surface, the interior surface defining an interior bore adapted to receive a work piece, the cage having circumferentially positioned windows communicating between the exterior and interior surfaces in which are disposed the jaws, upon axial displacement of the jaws the annular wedge structure forces the jaws inwardly into engagement with the exterior surface of the work piece.
19. The gripping tool as defined in Claims 10, 11 or 12, wherein the gripping assembly has jaws carrying the grip surface, the jaws being linked to move axially in unison, and an annular wedge structure having one or more wedge surfaces, acting between the jaws and the at least one body and adapted to cause the jaws to move radially to the engaged position upon relative axial displacement occurring in at least one direction.
