Abstract

Method and apparatus for charging a power supply unit such as a rechargeable battery for use in data monitoring and management system using the ESD
protection circuitry of the existing electrode contacts including guard contact and counter electrode thereby reducing system cost, complexity, and any unprotected battery contacts exposed for potential contamination is provided.

Claims (17)

1. An apparatus for recharging power in a data communication device, comprising:
a plurality of contacts;
a power source operatively coupled to the plurality of contacts; and a rechargeable battery operatively coupled to the plurality of contacts, the rechargeable battery configured to receive a predetermined signal from the power source;
wherein the rechargeable battery is configured to recharge based on the predetermined signal from the power source.
2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the plurality of contacts include a guard contact and a counter electrode.
3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the rechargeable battery and the plurality of contacts are provided in a data communication device, wherein the rechargeable battery is configured to provide power to the data communication device.
4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the data communication device includes a data transmitter, and further, the data transmitter is configured to transmit measured glucose data.
5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the transmitter is configured to receive the measured glucose data from a sensor.
6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the sensor includes one of a subcutaneous sensor and a transcutaneous sensor, configured to detect an analyte level.
7 The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the analyte level includes a glucose level.
8. An apparatus including a rechargeable power in a glucose monitoring system comprising:

a sensor configured to detect one or more glucose level of a patient;
a transmitter unit configured to receive the one or more detected glucose levels, and to transmit one or more data corresponding to the detected one or more glucose levels; and a receiver unit configured to receive the transmitted one or more measured glucose data;
wherein the transmitter unit includes a rechargeable battery, wherein the sensor includes a plurality of sensor contacts, each of the plurality of sensor contacts coupled to the transmitter unit, and further wherein a pair of the plurality of sensor contacts coupled to the transmitter unit is configured to receive a predetermined power signal to charge the rechargeable batter of the transmitter unit.
9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the pair of plurality of sensor contacts configured to receive a predetermined power signal includes a guard contact and a counter electrode.
10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the predetermined power signal includes a current signal from a power source.
11. A method for recharging power in a data communication device, comprising the steps of:
providing a plurality of contacts;
operatively coupling a power source to the plurality of contacts; and operatively coupling a rechargeable battery to the plurality of contacts, the rechargeable battery configured to receive a predetermined signal from the power source;
wherein the rechargeable battery is configured to recharge based on the predetermined signal from the power source.
12. The method of claim 10 wherein the plurality of contacts include a guard contact and a counter electrode.
13. The method of claim 10 further including the step of providing the rechargeable battery and the plurality of contacts in a data communication device, wherein the rechargeable battery is configured to provide power to the data communication device.
14. The method of claim 13 wherein the data communication device includes a data transmitter, and further, the data transmitter is configured to transmit measured glucose data.
15. The method of claim 14 further including the step of configuring the transmitter to receive the measured glucose data from a sensor.
16. The method of claim 15 wherein the sensor includes one of a subcutaneous sensor and a transcutaneous sensor, configured to detect an analyte level.
17. The method of claim 16 wherein the analyte level includes a glucose level.
