Abstract

A system for coupling a pipe segment to a pipe string is provided that includes a top drive assembly having an output shaft; and a pipe running tool coupled to the top drive assembly and rotatable by the output shaft of the top drive assembly. The pipe running tool includes an internal gripper for insertion within an internal diameter of the pipe segment and a tapered slip cone section, which slidably receives corresponding tapered surfaces of a plurality of slips, such that a vertical force on the slips causes the slips to move radially outwardly into gripping engagement with the internal diameter of the pipe segment, and wherein the vertical force applied to the slips is sufficient to allow the gripping engagement of the slips with the internal diameter of the pipe segment to transmit a torque from the top drive output shaft to the pipe segment.

Claims (18)

1. A system for coupling a pipe segment to a pipe string comprising:
a top drive assembly having an output shaft; and a pipe running tool coupled to the top drive assembly and rotatable by the output shaft of the top drive assembly, the pipe running tool comprising:
an internal gripper for insertion within an internal diameter of the pipe segment and comprising a tapered slip cone section which slidably receives corresponding tapered surfaces of a plurality of slips, such that a vertical force on the slips causes the slips to move radially outwardly into gripping engagement with the internal diameter of the pipe segment; and wherein the vertical force applied to the slips is sufficient to allow the gripping engagement of the slips with the internal diameter of the pipe segment to transmit a torque from the top drive output shaft to the pipe segment.
2. The system of claim 1, wherein a slip cylinder applies the vertical force to each of the plurality of slips.
3. The system of claim 1, wherein the slip cylinder comprises a head portion, a shaft portion, and a plurality of feet attached to the shaft portion, wherein each foot is attached to a corresponding one of the slips.
4. The system of claim 1, wherein the internal gripper comprises a tapered stabbing cone on a lower end thereof, which facilitates insertion of the internal gripper into the pipe segment, and an inflatable packer attached to the internal gripper between the slip cone section and the stabbing cone, and wherein the inflatable packer forms a seal with the internal diameter of the pipe segment when the inflatable packer is inflated.
5. The system of claim 1, wherein the slip cone section comprises a first tapered section and a second tapered section separated by a radially inward step, and wherein each of the plurality of slips comprises a first tapered section and a second tapered section separated by a radially inward step.
6. The system of claim 1, wherein the pipe running tool is vertically movable relative to the top drive assembly.
7. The system of claim 1, wherein the pipe running tool comprises a compensator for vertically displacing the pipe segment relative to the top drive assembly.
8. The system of claim 1, wherein the pipe running tool comprises a compensator for controlling a load on a threaded end of the pipe segment.
9. The system of claim 8, wherein the compensator is pressurized by a predetermined amount to reduce the load on the threaded end of the pipe segment by a predetermined amount.
10. The system of claim 1, further comprising a pipe detector disposed in proximity to the internal gripper, which activates the vertical force on the slips when a pipe segment is detected.
11. A system for coupling a pipe segment to a pipe string comprising:
a top drive assembly having an output shaft; and a pipe running tool coupled to the top drive assembly and rotatable by the output shaft of the top drive assembly, the pipe running tool comprising:
a stinger body for insertion within an internal diameter of the pipe segment and comprising a tapered slip cone section which slidably receives corresponding tapered surfaces of a plurality of slips;
a slip cylinder which applies a downward force on the slips causing the slips to move radially outwardly into gripping engagement with the internal diameter of the pipe segment, wherein the downward force of the slip cylinder on the slips is sufficient to allow the gripping engagement of the slips with the internal diameter of the pipe segment to transmit a torque from the top drive output shaft to the pipe segment.
12. The system of claim 11, wherein the slip cylinder is a single cylinder which is connected to and applies the downward force to each of the plurality of slips.
13. The system of claim 11, further comprising a pipe detector disposed in proximity to the stinger body, which activates the downward force on the slips when a pipe segment is detected.
14. The system of claim 11, wherein the slip cone section comprises a first tapered section and a second tapered section separated by a radially inward step, and wherein each of the plurality of slips comprises a first tapered section and a second tapered section separated by a radially inward step.
15. The system of claim 11, wherein the pipe running tool comprises a compensator for controlling a load on a threaded end of the pipe segment.
16. A system for coupling a pipe segment to a pipe string comprising:
a top drive assembly having an output shaft; and a pipe running tool coupled to the top drive assembly and rotatable by the output shaft of the top drive assembly, the pipe running tool comprising:
a pipe engagement assembly for grippingly engaging the pipe segment sufficient to transmit a torque from the top drive output shaft to the pipe segment; and a compensator for controlling a load on a threaded end of the pipe segment.
17. The system of claim 16, wherein the pipe engagement assembly grippingly engages an internal diameter of the pipe segment.
18. The system of claim 16, wherein the pipe engagement assembly grippingly engages an external diameter of the pipe segment.
