Abstract
A cross-link delaying or retarding composition, a cross-linking system including the cross-link delaying or retarding composition, or a fracturing fluid including a cross-linking system and a cross-link delaying or retarding composition are disclosed along with methods for making and using the compositions.
Claims (13)
1. A cross-link delaying or retarding composition comprising one polyhydroxy or polyol compound or a plurality of polyhydroxy or polyol compounds.
2. A cross-link delaying or retarding composition comprising a monosaccharide, a disaccharide, a polysaccharide, a carbohydrate or mixtures or combinations thereof, provided that the polysaccharide and carbohydrates do not result in a significant increase in fluid viscosity due to intermolecular cross-linking.
3. A cross-linking system comprising:
a cross-linking effective amount of cross-linking composition and a delaying effective amount of a cross-link delaying or retarding composition, where the delaying effective amount is sufficient to delay cross-linking of a fluid including a cross-linkable material for a desired delay time and the cross-linking effective amount is sufficient to produce a desired viscosity increase in the fluid.
a cross-linking effective amount of cross-linking composition and a delaying effective amount of a cross-link delaying or retarding composition, where the delaying effective amount is sufficient to delay cross-linking of a fluid including a cross-linkable material for a desired delay time and the cross-linking effective amount is sufficient to produce a desired viscosity increase in the fluid.
4. A fracturing fluid comprising:
a hydratable polymer, a cross-linking amount of a cross-linking composition and a delaying amount of a cross-linking delaying or retarding composition, where the cross-linking amount is sufficient to result in a desired viscosity increase in the fluid and the delaying amount is sufficient to delay the cross-linking for a desired period of time.

5. A method for fracturing a formation comprising steps of:
providing a fracturing fluid including a hydratable polymer, a cross-linking amount of a cross-linking composition and a delaying amount of a cross-link delaying or retarding composition, where the cross-linking amount is sufficient to result in a desired viscosity increase in the fluid and the delaying amount is sufficient to delay the cross-linking for a desired period of time, and injecting the fluid into a formation under conditions of temperature, pressure and time to result in a desired degree of formation fracturing.
providing a fracturing fluid including a hydratable polymer, a cross-linking amount of a cross-linking composition and a delaying amount of a cross-link delaying or retarding composition, where the cross-linking amount is sufficient to result in a desired viscosity increase in the fluid and the delaying amount is sufficient to delay the cross-linking for a desired period of time, and injecting the fluid into a formation under conditions of temperature, pressure and time to result in a desired degree of formation fracturing.
6. The method of claim 5, further comprising the step of:
introducing a breaking amount of a breaker into the formation during fracturing to break the viscosity of the fracturing fluid.

7. A method for fracturing a formation comprising steps of:
providing a fracturing fluid including a hydratable polymer, a cross-linking amount of a cross-linking composition and a delaying amount of a cross-link delaying or retarding composition, where the cross-linking amount is sufficient to result in a desired viscosity increase in the fluid and the delaying amount is sufficient to delay the cross-linking for a desired period of time, injecting the fluid into a formation under conditions of temperature, pressure and time to result in a desired degree of formation fracturing, and introducing a breaking amount of a breaker into the formation during fracturing to break the viscosity of the fracturing fluid.

8. The method of claim 5, 6 or 7, further comprising the step of:
injecting a proppant into the formation during fracturing, before breaking, during breaking or after breaking to prop open some of the fractures induced in the formation as a resulting of the fracturing step.

providing a fracturing fluid including a hydratable polymer, a cross-linking amount of a cross-linking composition and a delaying amount of a cross-link delaying or retarding composition, where the cross-linking amount is sufficient to result in a desired viscosity increase in the fluid and the delaying amount is sufficient to delay the cross-linking for a desired period of time, injecting the fluid into a formation under conditions of temperature, pressure and time to result in a desired degree of formation fracturing, introducing a breaking amount of a breaker into the formation during fracturing to break the viscosity of the fracturing fluid, and injecting a proppant into the formation during fracturing, before breaking, during breaking or after breaking to prop open some of the fractures induced in the formation as a resulting of the fracturing step.

The composition, system, fluid or method of any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the polyhydroxy or polyol compounds are selected from the group consisting of mono-saccharides, di-saccharides, low molecular weight poly-saccharides, polyol oligomers, low molecular weight polyol polymers and mixtures or combinations thereof.
11. The composition, system, fluid or method of claim 10, the monosaccharides comprises trioses including 3 carbon atoms, tetrose including 4 carbon atoms, pentose including 5 carbon atoms, hexose including 6 carbon atoms, heptose including 7 carbon atoms, octose including 8 carbon atoms, nonose are monosaccharides including 9 carbon atoms, and monosaccharides with a larger carbon atom count, and mixture or combinations thereof.

The composition, system, fluid or method of any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein the polyhydroxy or polyol compounds are selected from the group consisting of glycols, saccharides or sugars, oligosaccharides, low molecular weight polysaccharides, low molecular weight carbohydrates, low molecular starches, low molecular weight hydroxypolymers, and mixtures or combinations thereof.
13. The composition, system, fluid or method of claim 12, wherein the saccharides or sugar comprise a single carbohydrate unit, disaccharide comprise two carbohydrate units, oligosaccharides comprise 3 to 10 carbohydrate units, and low molecular weight polysaccharide comprise 11-20 carbohydrate units.
