Abstract
A plurality of thermometer models are manufactured from a universal clinical thermometer core. The thermometer core includes a housing, a controller storing a software program, a power source, a probe, a probe cord, and a display. A plurality of model selection devices are produced, each corresponding to a different thermometer model. One of the model selection devices is selected and connected to the controller. The controller operates the thermometer as a function of the connected model selection device such that the thermometer is configured with the features and default settings of the thermometer model corresponding to the connected model selection device.
Claims (17)
1. A configurable medical device (100) comprising:
a controller (120) for operating the medical device (100), said controller (120) having a memory (602) for storing computer-executable instructions implementing a plurality of functions of the medical device (100); and a model selection device (104A-D) identifying a selected one of a plurality of configurations of the medical device (100), each of said configurations of the medical device (100) being defined by one or more of the functions of the medical device (100), said model selection device (104A-D) being connected to the controller (120) and said controller (120) being responsive to the model selection device (104A-D) connected thereto for operating the medical device (100) in the selected configuration.
a controller (120) for operating the medical device (100), said controller (120) having a memory (602) for storing computer-executable instructions implementing a plurality of functions of the medical device (100); and a model selection device (104A-D) identifying a selected one of a plurality of configurations of the medical device (100), each of said configurations of the medical device (100) being defined by one or more of the functions of the medical device (100), said model selection device (104A-D) being connected to the controller (120) and said controller (120) being responsive to the model selection device (104A-D) connected thereto for operating the medical device (100) in the selected configuration.

The medical device (100) of claim 1 wherein the model selection device (104A-D) comprises one of a plurality of interchangeable user input devices, each of said user input devices and said controller (120) having mating electrical connectors (122) for connecting a selected one of the user input devices to the controller (120) to configure the medical device (100) according to the selected configuration.
3. The medical device (100) of claim 2 wherein each of the user input devices comprises a model-specific keypad.
4. The medical device (100) of claim 2 wherein the mating electrical connectors (122) comprise a set of pins and a corresponding set of pin-receiving contacts, at least two pins of the set of pins being electrically connected to the corresponding pin-receiving contacts when the selected user input device is connected to the controller (120), and wherein the controller (120) selectively enables the one or more functions of the medical device (100) defining the selected configuration based on which pins of the set of pins are electrically connected to the corresponding pin-receiving contacts.

The medical device (100) of claim 1 wherein the controller (120) is configured to selectively enable the one or more functions of the medical device (100) defining the selected configuration based on the model selector device (104A-D) connected thereto for operating the medical device (100) in the selected configuration.

The medical device (100) of claim 1 wherein the controller (120) is configured to selectively disable at least one of the functions of the medical device (100) not defining the selected configuration based on the model selector device (104A-D) connected thereto for operating the medical device (100) in the selected configuration.

The medical device (100) of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of software profiles stored in the controller memory (602), said software profiles each being representative of a pre-defined set of medical device (100) functions corresponding to one of the configurations of the medical device (100), and wherein the controller (120) is configured to load the software profile corresponding to the selected configuration identified by the model selection device (104A-D) when the medical device (100) initializes.
8. The medical device (100) of claim 1 wherein the controller (120) is configured to determine a default setting of the medical device (100) based on the model selection device (104A-D) connected thereto.
9. The medical device (100) of one of claims 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 wherein the medical device (100) is a thermometer.
10. A method of manufacturing a configurable medical device (100) comprising:
selecting (406) a user input device (104A-D) from a plurality of user input devices (104A-D), each of said user input devices (104A-D) being associated with a configuration for the medical device;
connecting (408) the selected user input device (104A-D) to a controller (120) of the medical device;
configuring (410) the controller (120) for operating the medical device in a selected configuration as a function of the selected user input device (104A-D) connected thereto.
selecting (406) a user input device (104A-D) from a plurality of user input devices (104A-D), each of said user input devices (104A-D) being associated with a configuration for the medical device;
connecting (408) the selected user input device (104A-D) to a controller (120) of the medical device;
configuring (410) the controller (120) for operating the medical device in a selected configuration as a function of the selected user input device (104A-D) connected thereto.
11. The method of claim 10 wherein the user input devices (104A-D) comprise a plurality of interchangeable, model-specific keypads, each of said keypads and said controller (120) having mating electrical connectors (122), and wherein connecting the selected user input
12 device (104A-D) to the controller (120) comprises connecting a selected one of the keypads to the controller (120) via the mating electrical connectors (122) to configure the medical device (100) according to the selected configuration.
12. The method of claim 10 further comprising storing computer executable instructions in a memory (602) of the controller (120) for implementing operation of a plurality of functions of the medical device (100) wherein a subset of said functions defines each of the configurations.
12. The method of claim 10 further comprising storing computer executable instructions in a memory (602) of the controller (120) for implementing operation of a plurality of functions of the medical device (100) wherein a subset of said functions defines each of the configurations.
13. The method of claim 12 wherein configuring the controller (120) comprises selectively enabling the subset of functions of the medical device (100) based on the selected user input device (104A-D) connected to the controller (120).
14. The method of claim 12 wherein configuring the controller (120) comprises selectively disabling each of the functions implemented by the computer-executable instructions not in the subset of functions of the medical device (100) based on the selected user input device (104A-D) connected to the controller (120).
15. The method of claim 10 further comprising storing a plurality of software profiles in a memory (602) of the controller (120), said software profiles each being representative of a pre-defined set of medical device functions corresponding to one of a plurality of configurations of the medical device (100), and wherein configuring the controller (120) comprises loading the software profile corresponding to the selected configuration when the medical device (100) initializes.
16. The method of claim 10 wherein configuring the controller (120) comprises determining a default setting of the medical device (100) as a function of the selected user input device (104A-D) connected thereto.
17. The method of one of claims 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, or 16 wherein the configurable medical device (100) is a thermometer.
