Abstract
A proximal radioulnar joint (lateral elbow) prosthesis (10) includes an ulnar brace member (12) to be secured to the outer surface of the ulna bone. The ulnar brace member defines a bearing surface (39) for supporting the radius. The prosthesis may also include a radial brace member (16) which cooperates with the ulnar brace member.
Claims (18)
1. A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis comprising:
an ulnar brace member having an upper end and a lower end. and including a substantially flat. downwardly-extending elongated portion defining an elongated abutment surface for abutting the outer surface of the ulna bone near its proximal end: and a bearing surface adjacent the upper end of said ulnar brace member for rotationally supporting a radius bone adjacent its proximal end.
an ulnar brace member having an upper end and a lower end. and including a substantially flat. downwardly-extending elongated portion defining an elongated abutment surface for abutting the outer surface of the ulna bone near its proximal end: and a bearing surface adjacent the upper end of said ulnar brace member for rotationally supporting a radius bone adjacent its proximal end.
2. A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 1. wherein said bearing surface is at least a partial ring.
3. A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 2, wherein said bearing surface is a full ring. positioned and sized to encircle the radial head of the radius bone.
4. A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 3. wherein said ring is open, so that, when it is installed on a human ulna and encircles the radial head of the radius bone, it allows the radial head to contact the capitellum of the humerus bone.
5. A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 3, wherein said ulnar brace member includes a base portion; a cover; and means for securing said cover to said base portion. wherein said assembled base portion and cover together form said ring.
6. A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 3. and further comprising:
a radial brace member including a rod defining a longitudinal axis and distal and proximal ends: and a ball at the proximal end of said rod which serves as the radial head of the radius bone;
wherein said bearing surface of said ulnar brace member receives and rotationally supports said ball.

7. A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 6, wherein said ulnar brace member is fixed to the ulna bone of a patient and said radial brace member is fixed to the radius bone of a patient.

A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 6, wherein said ulnar brace member includes a cap which defines said ring, said cap also defining a closed upper surface and a downwardly opening recess, said recess receiving and rotationally supporting said ball, and said closed upper surface defining an upwardly facing concave surface for receiving the capitellum of a humerus bone.

A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 6, wherein said ball of said radial brace member defines a central axis, and the longitudinal axis of the rod of said radial brace member is offset from the central axis of said ball so that when said radial brace member is installed on a radius and said ulnar brace member is installed on an ulna, the prosthesis provides the same alignment of the radius and ulna as in the original natural proximal radioulnar joint.
10. A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 3, wherein said downwardly-extending elongated portion extends tangentially from said ring, and said abutment surface is shaped to conform to the shape of the surface of the ulna bone.

A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 1, wherein said downwardly-extending elongated portion defines a plurality of laterally-oriented holes, and further including fasteners, which extend through said laterally-oriented holes for mounting said ulnar brace member on the ulna bone.
12. A method of installing a proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis.
comprising the steps of:
fixing an ulnar brace to the outer surface of the ulna bone of a patient near the proximal end of the ulna bone: and aligning said ulnar brace with the patient's radius bone so that the ulnar brace provides a bearing surface that supports the patient's radius bone.

13. A method of installing a proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 12. wherein said ulnar brace includes a base member and a cover, and including the step of assembling said cover and base member together to form a ring which encircles the radius bone adjacent its proximal end.
14. A method of installing a proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 12, and further comprising the step of:
inserting a radial brace member into the medullary cavity of the radius bone, said radial brace member including:
a rod, defining a longitudinal axis and distal and proximal ends:
and a radial head prosthesis at the proximal end of said rod;
wherein said bearing surface supports said radial head prosthesis.

15. A method of installing a proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 13, and further comprising the step of:
inserting a radial brace member into the medullary cavity of the radius bone, said radial brace member including:
a rod, defining a longitudinal axis and distal and proximal ends:
and a radial head prosthesis at the proximal end of said rod;
wherein said bearing surface supports said radial head prosthesis.

16. A method of installing a proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 15, wherein said ulnar brace member includes a cap which defines said ring.

17. A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 3. and further comprising a radial head prosthesis encircled by said ring.
18. A proximal radioulnar joint prosthesis as recited in claim 6, wherein said ball of said radial brace member defines a central axis, and the longitudinal axis of the rod of said radial brace member is aligned with the central axis of said ball.
