Abstract

A tamper-resistant device including a housing having a first surface and a second surface; and one or more covers positioned on the first surface of the housing, wherein the first surface includes at least two angled surfaces for receiving the one or more covers to create a securedly fixed connection, and wherein the one or more covers are securedly fixed to the housing via a snapping device.

Claims (76)

1. A tamper-resistant device comprising:
a housing having a first surface and a second surface; and one or more covers positioned on the first surface of the housing.
2. The tamper-resistant device of claim 1, wherein the tamper-resistant device is a shutter.
3. The tamper-resistant device of claim 1, wherein the one or more covers occupy a portion of the first surface.
4. The tamper-resistant device of claim 1, wherein the one or more covers are metal covers.
5. The tamper-resistant device of claim 4, wherein the metal covers permit contact blades of a plug to be securedly affixed to terminals connected to a power source.
6. The tamper-resistant device of claim 1, wherein the first surface includes at least two angled surfaces.
7. The tamper-resistant device of claim 6, wherein the at least two angled surfaces receive the one or more covers to create a securedly fixed connection.
8. The tamper-resistant device of claim 1, wherein the one or more covers are securedly fixed to the housing via a snapping device.
9. The tamper-resistant device of claim 1, wherein the one or more covers are detachable.
10. A cover comprising:
a first surface being an angled surface;
a second surface being a first side surface extending from a first side of the first surface;
a third surface being a second side surface extending from a second side of the first surface;
wherein the first side surface and the second side surface are parallel longitudinal sides; and wherein the first side surface and the second side surface each include an attaching member for attaching the cover to an external device.
11. The cover of claim 10, wherein the cover is a metal cover.
12. The cover of claim 10, wherein the external device is a housing of a tamper-resistant device.
13. The cover of claim 10, wherein the attaching member is a snapping device.
14. The cover of claim 13, wherein the snapping device attaches the cover to an internal surface of the external device.
15. A method for constructing a tamper-resistant device, the method comprising:
providing a housing having a first surface and a second surface; and positioning one or more covers on the first surface of the housing.
16. The method of claim 15, wherein the one or more detachable covers occupy a portion of the first surface.
17. The method of claim 15, wherein the one or more detachable covers are metal covers.
18. The method of claim 17, wherein the metal covers permit contact blades of a plug to be securedly affixed to terminals connected to a power source.
19. The method of claim 15, wherein the first surface includes at least two angled surfaces.
20. The method of claim 19, wherein the at least two angled surfaces receive the one or more detachable covers to create a securedly fixed connection.
21. The method of claim 15, wherein the one or more detachable covers are securedly fixed to the housing via a snapping device.
22. A receptacle comprising:
a front surface including one or more slots for receiving contact blades;
a rear surface including one or more terminals for connecting the contact blades to a power source, the one or more terminals being line terminals and load terminals; and a shutter having one or more covers, the shutter positioned between the front surface and the rear surface of the receptacle, the shutter configured to be misaligned in relation to the one or more slots in order to obstruct a direct path between the contact blades and the one or more terminals, wherein insertion of an object in the one or more slots causes displacement of the shutter.
23. The receptacle of claim 22, further comprising a shutter lock operatively connected in the receptacle to receive power from the power source connected to the receptacle.
24. The receptacle of claim 22, wherein the shutter is a child resistant shutter.
25. The receptacle of claim 23, wherein the shutter lock includes a pivoting locking bar, which is moved to an unlocked position when the power from the power source is applied to the line terminals of the receptacle.
26. The receptacle of claim 25, wherein the pivoting locking bar is mounted to a mechanical arm operably coupled to a movable bridge and a lifter.
27. The receptacle of claim 26, wherein the mechanical arm is a solenoid.
28. The receptacle of claim 26, wherein the lifter displaces the movable bridge to force a non-tripped condition and allow insertion of the contact blades when the receptacle is correctly wired.
29. The receptacle of claim 26, wherein the pivoting locking bar prevents operation of the shutter even when the contact blades are correctly inserted into the one or more slots on the front surface of the receptacle if reverse-wiring is detected by the shutter lock.
30. The receptacle of claim 25, wherein the pivoting locking bar remains in a locked position until the receptacle is correctly wired.
31. The receptacle of claim 24, wherein the shutter comprises a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI), wherein the GFCI is in a tripped condition.
32. The receptacle of claim 31, wherein the shutter lock includes a pivoting locking bar being mounted to a mechanical arm operably coupled to a movable bridge, the pivoting locking bar being moved to an unlocked position when the power from the power source is applied to the line terminals of the receptacle.
33. The receptacle of claim 32, wherein the mechanical arm is a solenoid activated by GFCI circuitry.
34. The receptacle of claim 32, wherein the pivoting locking bar is automatically moved to an unlocked position when the power from the power source is applied.
35. The receptacle of claim 32, wherein the pivoting locking bar is moved to an unlocked position when reset mode is activated.
36. The receptacle of claim 32, wherein the pivoting locking bar is moved to an unlocked position when the contact blades of a plug are inserted into the front surface of the receptacle.
37. A receptacle comprising:
a front surface including one or more slots for receiving contact blades;
a rear surface including one or more terminals for connecting the contact blades to a power source, the one or more terminals being line terminals and load terminals;
a shutter positioned between the front surface and the rear surface of the receptacle, the shutter configured to be misaligned in relation to the one or more slots in order to obstruct a direct path between the contact blades and the one or more terminals, wherein insertion of an object in the one or more slots causes displacement of the shutter; and a shutter lock operatively connected in the receptacle to receive power from the power source connected to the receptacle.
38. The receptacle of claim 37, wherein the shutter is a child resistant shutter.
39. The receptacle of claim 37, wherein the shutter lock includes a pivoting locking bar, which is moved to an unlocked position when the power from the power source is applied to the line terminals of the receptacle.
40. The receptacle of claim 39, wherein the pivoting locking bar is mounted to a mechanical arm operably coupled to a movable bridge and a lifter.
41. The receptacle of claim 40, wherein the mechanical arm is a solenoid.
42. The receptacle of claim 40, wherein the lifter displaces the movable bridge to force a non-tripped condition and allow insertion of the contact blades when the receptacle is correctly wired.
43. The receptacle of claim 40, wherein the pivoting locking bar prevents operation of the shutter even when the contact blades are correctly inserted into the one or more slots on the front surface of the receptacle if reverse-wiring is detected by the shutter lock.
44. The receptacle of claim 39, wherein the pivoting locking bar remains in a locked position until the receptacle is correctly wired.
45. The receptacle of claim 38, wherein the shutter comprises a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).
46. The receptacle of claim 45, wherein the GFCI is in a tripped condition.
47. The receptacle of claim 46, wherein the shutter lock includes a pivoting locking bar, which is moved to an unlocked position when the power from the power source is applied to the line terminals of the receptacle.
48. The receptacle of claim 47, wherein the pivoting locking bar is mounted to a mechanical arm operably coupled to a movable bridge.
49. The receptacle of claim 48, wherein the mechanical arm is a solenoid activated by GFCI circuitry.
50. The receptacle of claim 49, wherein the GFCI circuitry displaces the movable bridge to force a non-tripped condition of the GFCI when the receptacle is correctly wired.
51. The receptacle of claim 48, wherein the pivoting locking bar prevents operation of the shutter even when the contact blades are correctly inserted into the one or more slots on the front surface of the receptacle if reverse-wiring is detected by the shutter lock.
52. The receptacle of claim 47, wherein the pivoting locking bar remains in a locked position until the receptacle is correctly wired.
53. A receptacle comprising:
a front surface and a rear surface for connecting a compatible object to a power source;
a shutter positioned between the front surface and the rear surface, the shutter configured to prevent a non-compatible object from being inserted into one or more slots of the front surface of the receptacle; and a shutter lock operatively connected in the receptacle to receive power from a power source connected to the receptacle preventing displacement of said shutter when the receptacle is reverse-wired.
54. The receptacle of claim 53, wherein the shutter lock includes a pivoting locking bar, which is moved to an unlocked position when the power from the power source is applied to line terminals of the receptacle.
55. The receptacle of claim 54, wherein the pivoting locking bar is mounted to a mechanical arm operably coupled to a movable bridge and a lifter.
56. The receptacle of claim 55, wherein the lifter displaces the movable bridge to force a non-tripped condition and allows insertion of the contact blades when the receptacle is correctly wired.
57. The receptacle of claim 54, wherein the pivoting locking bar remains in a locked position until the receptacle is correctly wired.
58. The receptacle of claim 53, wherein:
the shutter comprises a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) in a tripped condition;
and the shutter lock includes a pivoting locking bar mounted to a mechanical arm operably coupled to a movable bridge and a lifter, the pivoting locking bar being moved to an unlocked position when the power from the power source is applied to line terminals of the receptacle.
59. A receptacle comprising:
a front surface and a rear surface for connecting a compatible object to a power source; and a shutter positioned between the front surface and the rear surface, the shutter configured to prevent a non-compatible object from being inserted into one or more slots of the front surface of the receptacle.
60. A method for combining a tamper-resistant device and a shutter lock within a receptacle, the receptacle having a front surface including one or more slots for receiving contact blades and a rear surface including one or more terminals for connecting the contact blades to a power source, the one or more terminals being line terminals and load terminals, the tamper-resistant device positioned between the front surface and the rear surface of the receptacle and configured to be misaligned in relation to the one or more slots in order to obstruct a direct path between the contact blades and the one or more terminals, wherein insertion of an object in the one or more slots causes displacement of the tamper-resistant device, the method comprising:
applying power from the power source to the line terminals of the receptacle in order to release a pivoting locking bar; and inserting the contact blades to move the tamper-resistant device for allowing an electrical connection between the contact blades and the one or more terminals of the receptacle.
61. The method of claim 60, wherein the tamper-resistant device is a child resistant device.
62. The method of claim 61, wherein the pivoting locking bar is mounted to a mechanical arm operably coupled to a movable bridge and a lifter.
63. The method of claim 62, wherein the mechanical arm is a solenoid.
64. The method of claim 62, wherein the lifter displaces the movable bridge to force a non-tripped condition and allow insertion of the contact blades when the receptacle is correctly wired.
65. The method of claim 62, wherein the pivoting locking bar prevents operation of the tamper-resistant device even when the contact blades are correctly inserted into the one or more slots on the front surface of the receptacle if reverse-wiring is detected by the shutter lock.
66. The method of claim 60, wherein the pivoting locking bar remains in a locked position until the receptacle is correctly wired.
67. The method of claim 61, wherein the tamper-resistant device comprises a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).
68. The method of claim 67, wherein the GFCI is in a tripped condition.
69. The method of claim 68, wherein the pivoting locking bar is mounted to a mechanical arm operably coupled to a movable bridge.
70. The method of claim 69, wherein the mechanical arm is a solenoid activated by GFCI
circuitry.
71. The method of claim 69, wherein the GFCI circuitry displaces the movable bridge to force a non-tripped condition of the GFCI when the receptacle is correctly wired.
72. The method of claim 68, wherein the pivoting locking bar prevents operation of the tamper-resistant device even when the contact blades are correctly inserted into the one or more slots on the front surface of the receptacle if reverse-wiring is detected by the shutter lock.
73. The method of claim 68, wherein the pivoting locking bar remains in a locked position until the receptacle is correctly wired.
74. A method for combining a tamper-resistant device and a shutter lock within a receptacle, the receptacle having a front surface and a rear surface for connecting a compatible object to a power source, the tamper-resistant device positioned between the front surface and the rear surface and configured to prevent a non-compatible object from being inserted into one or more slots of the front surface of the receptacle, the shutter lock operatively connected in the receptacle to receive power from a power source connected to the receptacle, the method comprising:
releasing a pivoting locking bar; and inserting the contact blades to move the tamper-resistant device for allowing an electrical connection between the contact blades and the one or more terminals of the receptacle.
75. The method of claim 74, wherein the pivoting locking bar is mounted to a mechanical arm operably coupled to a movable bridge and a lifter, and moved to an unlocked position when the power from the power source is applied to line terminals of the receptacle.
76. The method of claim 74, wherein:
the tamper-resistant device comprises a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) in a tripped condition; and the pivoting locking bar is mounted to a mechanical arm operably coupled to a movable bridge and a lifter, and.moved to an unlocked position when the power from the power source is applied to line terminals of the receptacle.
