发明领域
本发明一般地涉及一种计算机系统的输入装置,具体涉及一种可被用户手持的输入装置。
背景技术
现有的趋势是将个人计算机从工作环境转换到娱乐环境。作为这种趋势的一部分,人们已经开始重视其他可能的输入装置。这些输入装置适用于“客厅界面”(living room interface),该界面更注重娱乐而不是工作环境。例如,获取手部动作的手套已经在虚拟现实(virtual reality)、远程机器人操纵技术、医药、视频游戏和音乐制造等应用中得到了重视。
手套的缺点是制造商发现用户不喜欢戴手套进行娱乐应用。用户需要不断地摘下手套再戴回去,特别是,如果用户在多种应用之间变动时。例如,当用户必须进行打字和其它需要手的触觉的工作时,用户倾向于把手套摘下来。另外,数据手套阻碍了手的移动,并具有相当的重量。因而,用户不再接受用手套进行娱乐应用。
作为另一种可选择的输入装置是计算机视觉系统。然而,计算机视觉系统在娱乐环境的应用上受到限制。计算机视觉系统不能提供触觉反馈,而且受到照明条件的限制。此外,计算机视觉系统还有“寻址”(address)问题,也就是确定手势是否是面向计算机发出的问题。并且,参数是推算出来的,因而可能不准确。另外,输入装置必须在照相机的视野范围内。计算机视觉系统的另一缺点是有一些手势自相阻挡(self-occluding),难以判读。
因而,需要提供一种方便用户使用、提供触觉/触知(tactile/haptic )反馈并不必由用户套戴的输入装置,以解决现有技术中存在的问题。
发明内容
概括地讲,本发明通过提供一种配置成可被用户手持的输入装置,满足了上述需求。理应知道,本发明能够以各种方式实现,其中涉及装置、方法、过程、系统、程序指令或器件。下面将描述本发明的若干实施例。
在一实施例中,提供了一个输入装置,该输入装置包括中心体(central body)。响应及通信系统装在该中心体中。该响应及通信系统能够在输入装置和计算装置之间进行通信。输入装置还包括多个从中心体上伸出出的突起。该中心体和多个突起配置为能够获取用户的手部动作。该输入装置配置为能够被用户手持。
在另一实施例中,提供了一种在计算装置中运行的输入探测程序。该输入探测程序包括用以确定何时触发主程序的输入命令和对用户手持的外部输入装置的触觉反馈响应和的程序指令。该输入探测程序包括用于探测外部输入装置所发出的信号的程序指令。通过引起外部输入装置的物理变化产生该信号。提供了用以在计算装置运行的程序上触发输入命令的程序指令。该触发过程由外部输入装置对象所发出的探测信号产生。在一实施例中,提供了用以响应探测到的信号,在外部输入装置上产生触觉反馈信号的程序指令。

优选实施例的详细描述
本发明揭示了一种被用户手持并向用户提供触觉反馈,以模拟基于人手的各种动作的输入装置。在随后的描述中,将阐述多个特定细节,以全面地理解本发明。然而,本领域的技术人员不难明白,在缺少部分或全部所述特定细节的条件下,也可实施本发明。在其它的实例中,没有详细地描述习知的方法步骤,以避免不必要地模糊本发明。
本发明的实施例提供了一种用户输入装置,该输入装置被用户手持,而不是像手套那样戴在手上。所揭示的装置设计成用来获取用户手部动作的相关数据。如本申请所使用的那样,手部动作包括手指动作,例如,手指(finger)和拇指(thumb)的弯曲(bending)、手指和拇指的屈伸(flexing)等。手部动作还包括由手臂所产生的整个手部的移动。因而,输入装置可用于获取手指和拇指的动作,同时计算装置可追踪手部的空间移动,以利用输入装置完成点击和拖动操作,下文中将更详细地进行描述。所获取的数据为数字数据形式,可允许输入装置用作计算机程序的交互装置。特定手指的动作转移到输入装置的特定突起上。上述动作被转换并传送到计算系统,以启动命令、响应查询、提供命令、操纵交互式视频游戏内的对象等。另外,输入装置向用户提供震动反馈,以使用户能够体验与传送到计算系统的命令相关联的触觉。

图3中的外部输入装置100能通过设于外部输入装置内部的震动器120a-120g向用户的手指和手掌提供低等待时间的触觉反馈。在一实施例中,通过包括传动装置和控制单元的TOUCHENGINETM触觉/触知界面元件提供触觉反馈。当然,可使用任何触觉/触知界面元件,该触觉界面元件可以是专门为本实施例制造的,或者是由外部厂商设计的硬件和/或软件。在另一实施例中,各突起112a-112e及中心体116至少包括一个用于提供低等待时间的触觉/触知反馈的震动器。各突起能够:(a)测量指尖的压力、(b)计算手指的弯曲度以及(c)通过设定模式的震动刺激手指。在一实施例中,与用户的手接触的突起的表面进行了贴胶处理,以使用户牢固、舒适地握住输入装置。在又一个实施例中,突起的数量可变化,例如,以只感测拇指和前两个手指,且用户可用剩余的两个手指握住输入装置的底部。理应知道,由于手组成了大部分的表达能力,非常适合与计算装置交流信息。理应知道,突起可由任何适当的材料构成,该材料能够可产生形变,并且一旦引起形变的力消失,该材料随后会回到原来位置。如本申请所使用的,由于词语“触觉”和“触知”都是指触感,因而二者可互换。
引出线(line extension)114a-114e可配置为感测手指或拇指的屈伸或弯曲度。在一实施例中,屈伸或弯曲度被传递到发送/接收器118,在发送/接收器118内,信号转换成命令,随后命令被发送到计算装置。当然,信号可不经转换直接传递到发送/接收器118。在一实施例中,输入装置100用轻便材料制成。例如,中心体116由聚苯乙烯、泡沫橡胶、塑料和其它一些适当的轻便材料构成,这些材料能够固定上述电子元件,并作为突起112a-112e的支撑点。突起112a-112e由能够被用户的手握住的材料构成。在一实施例中,突起112a-112e的材料能提供足够的阻力,以使用户的手可以舒适地并不需用力地握住输入装置100。如上面所提到的,所述材料可使突起112a-112e被挤压成关闭位置(如图5B所示),并且一旦使输入装置关闭的力消失,突起112a-112e可返回到打开位置。电子元件(例如发送/接收器118、引出线114a-114e以及震动器120a-120g)嵌入在中心体116和突起112a-112e内。在一实施例中,在突起112a-112e的指尖位置设有压力传感器,以监测指尖的压力。上述电子元件装在输入装置100的响应及通信系统(也称通信系统)内。在另一实施例中,由位于中心体116内的电池给响应及通信系统的嵌入式电子元件供电。
图4是本发明一实施例的处于打开位置的输入装置的底部透视图。中心体116设计成可放于用户的手掌内,而突起112a-112e与用户的手指和拇指相对应,该输入装置的结构轻便,允许用户尽可能自由地活动。在一实施例中,由于没有视距要求,嵌入到中心体116内的电子元件考虑到不限定输入装置工作时的位置。更准确地说,输入装置和计算装置的通信使用短范围无线技术而不是红外信号。在另一实施例中,各突起112a-112e具有传感器,该传感器用来探测用户手指所施加的压力。
图5A是本发明一实施例的被用户手持并处于打开位置的输入装置的示意图。输入装置100的中心体116放在用户的手102的手掌内。各突起112a-112e配置为放置用户的手指和拇指。图5B是本发明一实施例的被用户手持并处于关闭位置的输入装置的示意图。这时,由于用户用手102握住输入装置100,并挤压突起112a-112e,输入装置100处于关闭状态。当输入装置100处于关闭状态时,中心体116保持靠着用户的手掌。在一实施例中,用户可使用锁紧机构将输入装置锁定在关闭位置。处于锁定位置时,突起112a-112e基本卷绕在中心体116的周围,形成一个圆柱体。由于处于锁定位置的输入装置100的存放面积最小,输入装置100可容易放在口袋内或者便于用户存放。按下或拨动按钮可打开锁紧机构,以使输入装置打开,也就是从锁紧位置释放而打开。
输入装置100可用于多种输入功能。下面描述几例输入功能。在一实施例中,输入装置可作为虚拟键盘。当手指从一个虚拟键移动到另一虚拟键时,各手指上装有低等待时间的震动器(例如TOUCHENGINETM震动器),向手指提供“点击”(click)触觉。当键被按动(通过指尖上的压力传感器)时,可用不同的点击表示,每当手指处于“home”行之外时,可使用一种持续震动表示。例如,如果只使用单手,手的左/右位置跟踪可用于在虚拟键盘的不同区域间切换。这种虚拟键盘的优点是可在任意表面、任意方位进行打字。例如,用户可以站着,并在他的腿边打字。
在另一实施例中,输入装置可作为具有类似上述键盘的实施例的反馈的虚拟钢琴。例如,瞄准用户的摄像机可显示用户的实况视频以及一架钢琴的三维计算机图形,该钢琴响应用户的手部动作。
在一个实施例中,输入装置可作为游戏的控制装置。例如,对于用户充当飞行员角色的游戏,可用折叠的塑胶片来模拟驾驶室的控制器(例如,在塑胶或其它材料上画上仪表板),用户每只手都戴上输入装置,以驾驶飞机或其它交通工具或装置。与电脑或游戏单元相连的显示监视器允许用户观察用户与游戏单元的互动。开始,用户可触摸塑胶片的四角,以校准位置跟踪。例如,塑胶片的四角用红色交叉线标记,以指示要接触的区域。利用指尖压力、位置跟踪和触觉反馈的结合可与游戏进行互动。游戏系统还可包括不具有电子元件的塑料操纵把或控制杆,它们只用于约束或稳定用户的手部。游戏系统通过指尖压力和手指屈伸信息探测手握控制器的用户,从而跟踪手部的动作和/或方位,以判读这些物理控制件的操纵信息。塑料操纵把可设计成想象中的输入装置的形状,例如包括将输入装置的中心体放入其中的凹陷部分。在另一实施例中,当用户握紧手指时,所施加的压力的大小与监视器中所显示的视频游戏中的对象上被施加的握紧程度相互关联。
本领域技术人员不难明白,通过增加照相机和计算机视觉技术,本申请所描述的实施例可在用户的实况视频中增加图形表示。还可通过输入装置提供指尖菜单,该指尖菜单在各手指上具有选择功能,通过拇指和手指的接触进行选定。这时,输入装置还可用于执行与鼠标类似的点击和拖动操作。
图6是本发明一实施例的输入装置的顶部透视图。输入装置100包括中心体116和突起112a-112e。如参照图3所描述的,中心体116包括用于向计算装置(例如游戏控制台)发送信号并从计算装置接收信号的嵌入式电子元件。突起112a-112e包括用于确定用户手指的弯曲度的引出线。还可设有压力传感器,以获得手指压力。通过设置在突起112a-112e和中心体116的震动器,向用户提供震动反馈。在一实施例中,震动器配置成可控制震动的强度和模式,以向用户提供触觉反馈。理应知道,通过改变震动的强度和模式,可使用户所感受到的感觉不同。例如,可向用户提供握方向盘、打字、敲击钢琴键的感觉等。
图7是图4中输入装置的另一实施例的底部透视图。输入装置100包括中心体116和突起112a、112b及112c。因而,本实施例中,用户的拇指、食指及中指放置在突起112a、112b及112c上。中心体116底面的按钮130将突起112a、112b及112c从关闭位置释放。更准确地说,按下按钮130,打开将突起112a、112b及112c保持在关闭位置的锁紧机构。当然,在一实施例中,按钮130可装入设有供各手指用的突起的输入装置。本领域的技术人员理应知道,按下按钮130后,锁紧机构可被弹簧触发(spring activated),以将突起释放到开放位置。另一实施例中,输入装置100可设置成有一个突起。例如,提供一个从中心体116伸出的食指用的突起。这时,获取食指的动作,尽管该单个突起可放置任何手指。还可在单个突起以及中心体内设置震动器,以通过手指和手掌向用户的手部提供触觉反馈。
图8是本发明一个实施例的方法的操作流程图,该方法用于从外部输入装置向计算机系统传达命令。该方法从操作150开始。在操作150中,提供接收器。该接收器用来与外部输入装置进行通信,该外部输入装由用户的手掌握住。在一实施例中,接收器集成在计算装置(例如游戏机)上。图3-7表示了一例输入装置。随后,进入该方法的操作152。在操作152中,通过输入装置的形变获取用户的手部动作。这时,用户在输入装置上施加和释放压力,嵌入到输入装置内部的电子元件获取突起的位置变化,产生手指弯曲度以及指尖压力的信息。
随后,进入图8方法的操作154。在操作154中,获取的手部动作被转换成命令传送到接受器。在一实施例中,动作被转换并传输到计算系统,以启动命令、响应查询、操纵交互式视频游戏内的对象。然后,进入该方法的操作156。在操作156中,利用输入装置提供的触觉反馈刺激用户的手。这时,图3所示的低等待时间震动器提供触觉反馈。在一实施例中,控制震动的强度和模式,向用户提供特定的感觉。更精确地说,震动反馈的类型取决于所执行的应用。
在一实施例中,本发明可以是一个能够向用户提供震动反馈的计算系统,该计算系统包括由各元件的功能规定的各种元件。例如,该计算系统可包括用于获取手部动作的装置。用于获取用户手部动作的装置是配置成用来由用户手持的外部输入装置(例如图3-7所示的手持输入装置)。该计算系统包括用于发送获取的手部动作的装置。用于向计算装置发送获取的手部动作的装置可以是上面参考图3所讨论的嵌入式电子元件。该计算机系统提供了用于响应所发送的用户手部动作向外部输入装置发送命令的装置。这时,与计算装置相关的发送器向外部输入装置发送命令。图3所示的震动器是用以响应发送到外部输入装置的命令向用户提供触觉反馈的装置。与计算装置保持通信的显示监视器是用以显示接收的外部输入装置命令的相关图像的装置。
总而言之,本申请提供了一种手持式输入装置。该手持式输入装置设计成与表面无关。更精确地说,输入装置不需要像鼠标那样沿物体表面移动进行操作。在一实施例中,用户的手指动作产生用以控制监视器显示的对象的信号,该监视器与接收该生成信号的计算装置相连接。例如,当计算单元是视频游戏机时,该对象可与视频游戏应用相关联。本领域的技术人员理应知道,上述的实施例可用于运行视频游戏的游戏机以及用户从服务器读取视频游戏的在线视频游戏。因而,计算单元可为游戏机或可通过分布式网络(例如,互联网)进行访问的服务器。
本发明可使用各种涉及存储在计算机系统内的数据的由计算机实现的操作。这些操作是那些对物理量进行的物理操作。通常(尽管不是必须),这些物理量具有电或磁信号的形态,能够进行存储、转换、混合、比较以及其它操作。另外,所执行的操作通常是指例如产生、识别、确定或比较等操作。
本申请所描述的任何构成本发明一部分的操作都是有用的机械操作。本发明还涉及一种用于执行这些操作的装置或设备。该设备可以是为了所需目的专门构造的,还可以是由存储在计算机内的计算机程序有选择地激活或配置的通用计算机。更具体地,可使用各种具有根据本申请揭示的内容编写的计算机程序的通用计算机器,或许更为方便的做法是构造一个更专用的设备来执行所需要的操作。
本发明还可通过记录在计算机可读介质上的计算机可读指令来实施。该计算机可读介质是任何能够存储数据的数据存储装置,该数据过后可被计算机系统读取。计算机可读介质的例子有:硬盘、网络附加存储器(NAS)、只读存储器、随机存取存储器、只读光盘存储器(CD-ROM)、可记录光盘存储器(CD-R)、可重写光盘存储器(CD-RW)、磁带以及其它光学及非光学数据存储器。计算机可读介质还可分布在连接计算机系统的网络上,以使计算机可读指令以分布方式被存储和运行。
为了清楚地理解本发明,以上比较详细地描述了本发明,但不难明白,本发明可进行一定的变化与修改。因而,应认为上述的实施例是示意性的,而不是限制性的,本发明不限于本申请所给出的细节,而可在本申请说明书规定的和等效的范围内进行修改。
Claims (19)
1.一种输入装置,其中包括:
配置成完全地支承在用户的手掌内的中心体(116);
与所述中心体(116)相结合的响应及通信系统,所述响应及通信系统允许所述输入装置(100)和计算装置(108)之间的通信;以及
多个从所述中心体(116)上延伸出的突起(112a-e),其中:所述中心体(116)和所述多个突起(112a-e)配置成由用户手部的手掌侧完全地支撑,多个突起(112a-e)中的每一个延伸到用户手部的手指尖,所述中心体(116)和所述多个突起(112a-e)配置成用来获取用户的手部动作。
2.如权利要求1所述的输入装置,其中还包括:与所述中心体(116)相结合的锁紧机构,该锁紧结构配置成用来将多个突起保持在闭合状态。
3.如权利要求2所述的输入装置,其中:所述中心体(116)和所述多个突起(112a-e)中的每一个包括:
配置成用来向用户提供触觉反馈的震动器(120a-g)。
4.如权利要求3所述的输入装置,其中:所述震动器(120a-g)产生的震动的强度和模式受到控制。
5.如权利要求1所述的输入装置,其中:所述响应及通信系统向要被控制的装置发送信号,所述信号由用户的手部动作确定。
6.如权利要求2所述的输入装置,其中:所述锁紧机构由可操作地连接到所述中心体一端的按钮(130)弹簧触发。
7.如权利要求1所述的输入装置,其中,所述多个突起被配置成感测用户手指弯曲度。
8.一种用于从手持式输入装置到计算机系统传递命令的方法,所述方法包括:
提供游戏控制台,所述游戏控制台具有配置成与手持式输入装置进行通信的接收机,所述手持式输入装置配置成完全适合在用户手内;
通过所述用户手引起的所述手持式输入装置的形变来获取用户的手部动作;
将所述手部动作转换成要传递到所述接收机的命令;以及
对所述命令传递到所述接收机进行响应,利用通过所述手持式输入装置提供的触觉反馈刺激所述用户手,所述刺激包括:
对施于所述用户手的振动的强度和模式进行控制。
9.如权利要求8所述的方法,其中,所述输入装置是非表面相关装置。
10.如权利要求8所述的方法,其中,将所述手部动作转换成要传递到所述接收机的命令的方法操作包括:
对显示监视器上显示的对象进行控制。
11.如权利要求8所述的方法,还包括:
感测用户手指弯曲度。
12.如权利要求8所述的方法,其中,所述手持式输入装置锁于闭合状态。
13.一个能够向用户提供触觉反馈的计算系统,其中包括:
计算单元(108),该计算单元包括配置成用来接收和发送命令的电路;
与所述计算单元(108)通信的显示监视器(110);以及
配置成用来握持在用户手部的手掌内的输入装置(100),该输入装置(100)能够响应用户的手部动作向用户提供触觉反馈,所述输入装置包括,
多个从中心体(116)延伸出的突起(112a-e),其中所述中心体(116)和所述多个突起(112a-e)配置成由用户手部的手掌侧支撑,多个突起(112a-e)中的每一个延伸到用户手部的手指尖,所述中心体(116)和所述多个突起(112a-e)配置成用来获取用户的手部动作。
14.如权利要求13所述的计算系统,其中:所述计算单元(108)是游戏控制台。
15.如权利要求13所述的计算系统,其中:所述输入装置(100)包括与所述中心体(116)结合的响应及通信系统,该响应及通信系统允许所述输入装置(100)和所述计算装置(108)之间的通信。
16.如权利要求13所述的计算系统,其中:所述触觉反馈是由震动器(120a-g)产生的震动反馈。
17.如权利要求16所述的计算系统,其中:所述震动反馈的强度和模式受到控制。
18.如权利要求13所述的计算系统,其中:所述输入装置(100)包括与所述中心体(116)结合的锁紧机构,该锁紧机构配置成用来将所述多个突起保持在闭合状态。
19.如权利要求13所述的计算系统,其中,所述多个突起被配置成感测用户手指弯曲度。
