低于材料软化温度的温度下进行的,一般低于
1600℃。
Description
本发明适用于二氧化硅基质光导纤维的制作方法。
近年来光纤技术得到了很大发展,以致于目前光导纤维成了城市之间通信网中新的音像或数据传输的最佳媒介。另一方面,光导纤维还基本上没有打入电话网的用户环路部分中。为了使光纤在市内电话环路中得到可能的更广泛的应用,普遍认为必须使光纤成本降低。
众所周知,目前用于通信目的的光导纤维无例外的都是二氧化硅基质光纤,这种光纤起光学作用的部分是由加入供反应用的适当的光导气体通过汽相沉积(例如改进的汽相沉积法,MCVD;轴向沉积法,VAD;高频等离子体激发的化学汽相沉积法,PCVD;或外气相氧化法,OVPO)形成的材料构成的。该材料在此处称为“被沉积材料”。该光纤起光学作用的部分在此处是指在其工作波长上基本上能容纳全部其典型值大于99%或甚至超过99.90%的所传导光的能量的那部分。该光纤维起光学作用的部分包括具有相对高折射率的中心部分(即光纤芯),包围该芯並与其紧密接触的是一层具有相对低折射率的沉积包覆层。
光纤起光学作用区域的玻璃质一般必须具有光损耗低的性质。所有上面提到的汽相沉积工艺都可制作出超高纯度的玻璃质,然而玻璃质形成的速率一般相当低,因此制作出的玻璃质相当贵。因为光纤通常含有外包覆层或比沉积包覆层纯度低的外套,所以光纤起光学作用的部分一般仅是光纤整个截面的一小部分。这种外套材料一般出自基底管(在MCVD或PCVD工艺中)或者外包覆管(在VAD或OVPO工艺中)。
用作基底管或外包覆管的管材一般是熔触石英。举例来说,这些管材的光损耗在100分贝/千米或更大些,然而沉积材料的光损耗可低到0.2~1分贝/千米。现行基底和外包覆材料相当高的损耗带来的结果是必须制备相当厚的沉积包覆层。这种情况通常用D/d的比值来表示,这里D是光纤沉积包覆区域的外径,d是光纤芯(有效区)的直径。比如,假如要把由于外包覆材料造成的附加损耗限定在0.01分贝/千米,那么分别对应于有100分贝/千米和1分贝/千米损耗的外包覆材料的光纤来说,能够进入此包覆材料的光能量仅分别为光能总量的10-4和10-2。其它条件不变,前种情况的D/d值实际上要求要大于后种情况(1分贝/千米损耗的外包覆材料)。因此一般说来,能够提供较低损耗的二氧化硅外包覆材料例如二氧化硅管是有利的。但是为商业上可行,这种二氧化硅必须是可以用相当低的成本制备的。图3表明了一个典型的突变截面(Step Profile)单模光纤外包覆层中功率损耗与归一化了的波长λco/λ的函数关系,並以D/d为参量,这里λ为光波长,λco为该光纤的截止波长。
已知以往的技术有几种工艺可用来制造不很昂贵的二氧化硅基质玻璃管(和其它玻璃体)。其中有所谓溶胶-凝胶(sol-gel)技术(例如可参看美国专利NO.4,419,115和NO.4,605,428)。在这种溶胶-凝胶工艺中和其它有关的玻璃制备工艺中产生的中间产品是一种多孔玻璃体,通过适当的热处理,这种多孔体可以转变成基本无孔的玻璃体。
用多孔玻璃管材制造的玻璃管可以用作传统加工方法的外包覆管。这需要在等于或高于玻璃管的“软化”温度时把管材烧裹(COll-apsing)在玻璃基棒上,此温度的典型值高于大约2000℃(把管材烧裹在玻璃基棒上的预制料制造工艺称为“管中棒”(rod-in-tube)工艺)。不仅这种高温管材烧裹的能耗高从而使其成本高,而且它还可导致生产出的光纤中信号损失增加。例如在高温处理中,想必某些形式的点缺陷可能在掺杂二氧化硅中产生。这些点缺陷可能产生附加的信号损失,因此不希望在光纤起光学作用的区域内引入这些缺陷。况且在把玻璃管材热裹在玻璃基棒上的管中棒工艺过程中,常常很难保持预制棒内芯部的同心度达到光纤制造所需要的程度。
按照上述观点,显而易见的是非常需要一种用“管中棒”方法来制造光纤预制棒的工艺,这种工艺不包含在等于或高于玻璃软化温度下将外包覆管材烧裹在基棒上的加工过程,因而该工艺特别从根本上避免了已有技术的工艺方法带来的同心度问题。本专利申请公开了这种方法。本发明姆椒ɑ贡硐殖龅统杀旧系退鸷牡亩趸杌释獍膊牧系那绷Γ谑强梢灾圃斐鼍哂械虳/d值和低到中(例如0.15~5分贝/千米,最好为少于1分贝/千米)损耗的光纤。
二氧化硅基质的“软化”温度是指直径为0.5到1.0毫米长度为22.9厘米的同质均匀玻璃纤维在其上部10厘米长度处在特定的炉内加热时,此玻璃纤维在其自身重量作用下以每分钟1毫米的速率延伸时的温度。对于密度约为2.5的玻璃来说,该温度对应于粘度为107.6泊。此定义与由E.B.Shand给出的关于软化点的定义是一致的(参看Glass Engineering Handbook,McGraw Hill,1958,P470)。
概括地说,本发明是一种制造光纤的方法,此方法包括制备二氧化硅基质(即二氧化硅重量比大于80%)玻璃基棒和二氧化硅基质多孔玻璃管材,将此玻璃基棒插进管材中,在低于该材料软化点的一种温度(或几种温度)下对这种复合体进行加热处理,从而得到整体的、基本上无孔的玻璃体(称为预制棒),然后用此预制棒拉制光纤。
玻璃基棒(常被称为“芯棒”)一般用汽相沉积工艺制备,它包含具有相对高的折射率的中心区,此中心区被具有相对低折射率的区域无间隙地包围着。多孔玻璃管材(这里常称之为“外包覆管”或“外套管”)的密度一般在该种材料理论密度值的10~80%范围内,並且可以用任何适当的工艺生产出来,特别可选用溶胶-凝胶工艺,材料的“理论”密度本质上相当于充分压实了的材料(即无孔玻璃)的密度。制造这种多孔玻璃管材可用的工艺包括在芯棒上高速率沉积白碳黑(Soot),浸溶多相玻璃管使之成多孔玻璃管(类似于VYCOR玻璃),或者是压制二氧化硅粉末(可参看R.Dorn等人的文章,Proceedings Of IOOC-ECOC 1985,Pages 69-72)。这种多孔玻璃管材可以是掺杂的(如掺氟)或未掺杂的,还可以是径向折射率为常数或非常数的。
此多孔玻璃管必须具备机械性能,它可以被干燥、熔凝和与棒材烧结起来而管材不破坏。特别是我们发现使用氢氧化季铵(guaternary ammonium hydroxide)以及相对大颗粒二氧化硅(表面积为5~100米2/克,最好为大于20米2/克)的溶胶/凝胶工艺,能够用来制造多孔玻璃管材,这种管材有利于实现本发明。在其它溶胶/凝胶工艺中,可以发现别的尺寸的颗粒是更有利的。颗粒尺寸常常不是对由溶胶/凝胶工艺制造的多孔玻璃管的机械性能影响的唯一工艺变化因素。比如溶胶的组分一般选定为其PH值在11~14范围内,然后加入一种(或多种)化合物,使PH值降到4~11(最优为8~10)。举例来说,溶胶含有氢氧化季铵(例如烷基氢氧化铵,象甲基、乙基或丁基氢氧化铵)或其它适合的碱,並且由于加入甲酸烷基酯如甲酸甲酯、甲酸乙酯,或甲酸丁酯或其它适合的酯类而使PH值降低。
我们还发现调整玻璃嵌入管内的结合热处理条件有利于管材的凝固以及棒外围玻璃管的热压结沿着结合部位累进进行。比如,如果多孔管的凝固能产生一个稍小于芯棒外径的内径(例如小到大约10%),这是我们所希望的。另一方,收缩的结果是在管材的粘滞度减小到使管材发生流动的值以前,管与芯棒紧密接触。
至少在某些情况下,芯棒的直径和多孔管材内径(还可能有其它特性和密度)的选择要有利于使整个管材(或给定轴向部分)的凝固与管材(或管材的一段)内径减少成芯棒的直径基本上同时进行,这样就使管材紧密地热压结在芯棒上而不会发生过量的形变。上述两个实例有利于减小当管材热压结在芯棒上时,在管材上产生的应力。
正如本领域的普通技术人员所了解的那样,多孔二氧化硅基质材料的凝固温度不仅强烈地依赖于材料的组分,而且还取决于多孔二氧化硅的表面积。例如,用非常小颗粒的胶态二氧化硅(表面积为800米2/克)制成的多孔二氧化硅基质,其凝固温度为1100℃,而用5米2/克胶态二氧化硅制成的多孔二氧化硅基质,其凝固可能需要1550℃的温度,因此,合适的工艺条件,比如加热速率、管/棒相配的直径大小以及凝固温度的确定,可能还需要作辅助性试验。
根据本发明制造的光纤预制棒,有一个由芯棒获得的中心部分((包括“芯”和某种外包覆层)以及一个由多孔玻璃管材获得的外围部分。在此预制棒制备完成后,以传统的方法从此预制棒拉制出光纤。芯棒的高折射率区最终成为此光纤的芯部(其有效直径为d),芯棒的低折射率区最终成为此光纤的内包覆层(其外径为D),而且外包覆层最终成为此光纤的外套层,它紧密地包覆在内包覆层外,並且一般成为光纤的外围周界。通常外套材料构成了光纤整个截面的相当大的部分(一般大于50%,甚至95%或更多)。上述光纤一般有一层或多层高分子聚合物包覆层保护。
本发明所述的方法有一些超过已有技术的包括把玻管收缩到玻璃棒上的管中棒工艺的优点。比如将二氧化硅玻璃管热嵌套在芯棒上需要比多孔二氧化硅管的凝固以及热压结到芯棒上(一般低于1600℃)的温度要高得多(一般高于2000℃)。在已有技术的加工工艺中,由于表面应力的作用,在把管材熔融到玻棒上时,玻璃外包覆管时常会损坏,其结果是降低了芯部相对于光纤外表面的同心度。而由于在低得多的温度下进行加工,本发明的工艺基本上避免了这种损坏作用。至少多孔玻璃管凝固工艺的一部分是在含有氯气和/或含氟物质(最好基本上不含氧)的气氛中进行的,所以杂质(比如氢氢化物,碱金属、碱土金属、过渡金属)可以从管材中去除掉,其结果是外围材料的损耗相当低,这样进而可以应用相当低的D/d值(最好少于大约6),附带的潜力是成本降低,甚至还可以应用相当不纯的原料(因而降低成本)来制备多孔玻璃管。对于上述已有技术的工艺来说,烧裹时不可能有这种提纯作用。况且,低的处理温度可使残留的不良离子从外包覆材料进入到芯棒的扩散减至最少,並避免了不良缺陷的产生。

图1是表示本发明工艺的主要步骤流程图。在这些工艺步骤中包括制备多孔二氧化硅基质管材和二氧化硅基质芯棒。
芯棒可以用任何适宜的玻璃成型工艺来制造,这种工艺能够制出具有所需的折射率径向变化分布的底损耗棒材。棒材中心区的有效折射率nc一般大于或等于透明二氧化硅的折射率no,但就原理而论或许也可以小于no。棒的内包覆区域的折射率n1一般等于或小于no。但就原理而论或许也能大于no。但是无论怎样,nc>n1。示范芯棒的折射率分布图在图2中表示,这里△n=n-no,n为折射率。
作为半径的函数,无论是棒中心区域的折射率还是芯区的外围部分的折射率都不需要是常量,举例来说,内部区域的折射率是梯度式变化的(例如“三角形的”),于是产生出具备所需传导特性的光纤,进而可能有由制造芯棒工艺所产生的现有折射率变化(如中心值下降)。一般棒的直径至少是芯区有效直径的两倍(D/d≥2),通常最好为3或4倍。示范芯棒的折射率分布在图2中表示。理论上使用只由芯部材料构成的玻璃棒也是可能的,然而这样一般得到的结果是光纤具有相当高的损耗,从而不被选用。
芯棒可以用任何一种适当的工艺制造,例如VAD,OVPO,MCVD或PCVD,其中后两种工艺制出的芯棒中内沉积玻璃(一般包括芯部以及外包覆材料)上包复有由管获得的玻璃。从理论上看该芯棒也可以是多孔的玻璃体。但是普遍不选用它。在把外套管热压结到芯棒上之前,常常需要进行芯棒的表面处理,例如用适当的溶剂清洗。火焰抛光和/或腐蚀。表面处理可以对用来发明预制棒拉制成的光纤的损耗产生某种影响。下面将叙述这个问题。
多孔玻璃管材可以用适当的工艺来制造,该工艺制出的管材具有必须的纯度和机械强度,可以固结成基本无孔的玻璃。普遍选用的工艺包括一些溶胶/凝胶工艺,下面将详细叙述。在其它可用的工艺中有在可动芯轴上沉积二氧化硅“碳黑”(Silica“Soot”)或浸析多成分玻璃。
我们已经发现并非所有溶胶/凝胶工艺都可以用来制造用于本发明实施中的多孔玻璃管,一般说来这是由于在干燥、固结或热压结到玻璃棒上的过程中发生玻璃管破裂的缘固。一种普遍采用的溶胶/凝胶工艺使用了相当大颗粒的二氧化硅(一般表面积为5~100米2/克)。
实用于实施本发明的颗粒可以是汽相法制成的二氧化硅,但也可以是其它方法制成的,例如磨碎“白碳黑”或由溶胶/凝胶工艺制成的基质,或是从碱性醇盐溶液中沉淀出的基质。这些颗粒通常在碱性水介质(PH值大于范围在11~14)中成胶态,例如可以用水和四甲基氢氧铵做碱性水介质。根据需要,该溶胶可进行搅拌或其它处理,以提高其均匀性。然后通常将溶胶浇注进一个适当的模子里並使其凝胶。在特别优选的实施例中,溶胶的PH值逐步调整到4~11范围内的某个值,最好是8~10。比如可以通过往溶胶里加入甲酸甲酯或甲酸乙酯来作到这一点。在凝胶发生后,通常产生的管材可以从模子中取出並干燥,结果就成为能用于本发明工艺的多孔玻璃管。然而,可用于实现本发明的多孔玻璃管还可以用未涉及到降低溶胶PH值的溶胶/凝胶工艺来制造。比如,可以把一定大小的胶状二氧化硅颗粒散布在水中,並把该溶胶盛在适当的模子里直到产生凝胶(一般要经过数小时甚至数天)。
图5给出在示范的胶状二氧化硅-水溶胶中PH值与溶胶稳定性之关系曲线。普遍认为在强碱性溶胶中二氧化硅会发生溶解,並且该溶胶PH值的减少将引起被溶解二氧化硅的析出,析出的二氧化硅择优沉积在具有负的曲率半径的位置处(即相邻二氧化硅粒子联接处形成的“弯颈”处)。上述机理是造成用上述优选的溶胶/凝胶工艺所制造出的多孔二氧化硅基质具有相当高的机械强度的主要原因。但是由其它工艺制成的二氧化硅基质也可具有满意的特性。所以说,本发明並不取决于上述理论机理的正确与否。
图6表示溶胶的碱性(用溶胶中四甲基氢氧化铵的浓度来表示)与多孔二氧化硅基质的抗弯强度的关系,该二氧化硅基质是由溶胶例如胶态二氧化硅-水溶胶制备的,图7表明一种示范溶胶在加入甲酸甲酯后(将300克SiO2+375克H2O+38克25%的四甲基氢氧化铵配制起来,取50克作样品)的PH值随时间的变化。在加入任一种这些酯以前,溶胶的PH值为11.54。样品中加入了0.445克(32滴)酯,t=0的时刻对应于加入完成的时刻。
由于凝胶体的干燥以及干燥后多孔料的热压结会产生一些收缩,故必须选择适当的模具和/或玻璃棒的直径。如果干燥收缩量△La被定义成(L湿-L干)/L湿,这里L湿和L干分别为干燥前后的凝胶体线性尺寸,D为所用的玻璃棒的直径,那么,湿凝胶管材的内径必须大于D/(1-△La)。与此相类似,如果总收缩量被定义为△Lt=(L湿-L干)/L湿,这里L加热是在干燥和固结后的线性尺寸,那么湿凝胶管材的内径必须小于D/(1-△Lt)。前一项条件保证了干燥后的管材适于套在芯棒上,后一项条件保证多孔管材会紧密地热压在芯棒上。无论△La还是△Lt都取决于材料的性质,如材料的密度,为确定凝胶管的最佳尺寸,一般要做少量试验。
凝胶管在初步干燥后一般要把该管保持在高温下(例如200~500℃)一段时间(例如1~24小时)使之进一步脱水。在含氧的气氛中进行干燥有利于从多孔材料中去除有机的残留物。然后该管材(一般插入了玻璃棒)暴露在含氯气的气氛中加热至中等温度(例如800~1200℃)。
人们已知在含氯气的气氛中加热多孔二氧化硅材料可以从材料中去除掉OH化物,并且可以去除几种过渡金属杂质。人们还知道将氯气处理过的多孔二氧化硅基质在含氟的气体中加热可以导致吸附氯被氟置换,伴随着在高于工作温度加热时减少气泡的形成。参看美国专利NO.4,707,174。然而,多孔二氧化硅基质的氯和/或氟处理(特别是根据本发明制造的多孔管材),能够产生更重要的好处,在下面将讨论之。
我们发现如果含氯(或氟)的气氛中基本上无氧的话,就会大大增强杂质从多孔二氧化硅基质中的去除。氧气的分压与卤素(氯或氟)气体的分压之比值小于大约10-3是有利的,最好小于10-6。一般要求加热在严格密封的容器中进行,例如在密封的二氧化硅闭管中。如果气氛中除含有卤素和典型地含有惰性稀释气体如氦外,还有CO和CO2的话,就可以获得特别低的分压比值。例如可参见A.Muan等人所著《Phase Equilibria Among Oxides in Steelmaking》一书,Addison Wesley(1965),P.26?
在基本上无氧的含卤素的气氛中进行加热处理,可以有效地去除的不仅是过渡金属离子,而是还包括周期表中大多数其它元素成份。特别是这种加热处理可以去除碱金属和碱土金属。还可以去除第Ⅲ族元素如B,Al,Ga和In以及第Ⅳ族元素Ge,Sn和Pb。一般说来,在给定的温度和分压比的情况下,如果氯化物的分压基本上大于10-4大气压,杂质元素就会被去除掉。
作为例子,下面我们讨论几种含铁(1%重量比的Fe2O3)的多孔二氧化硅材料:以400℃/小时的升温速率加热到800℃下保持6小时;以150℃/小时的升温速率加热到1400℃下保持1小时,然后冷却至室温。一个样品以这种方法在He气氛中处理,其含Fe量保持不变。第二个样品在10%Cl2+90%He气氛中保持温度在800℃达3小时,然后在10%Cl2+10%SiF4+80%He气氛中保持3小时。这两种气氛中含O2量都少于5ppm。所产生的透明玻璃含有大约40(±3)ppb的Fe。第二个样品在10%Cl2+90%He(含O2量少于5ppm)气氛中保持在800℃达6小时。其结果与第二种样品基本一致。第四种样品在10%Cl2+10%O2+80%He气氛中保持800℃达6小时,所产生的玻璃是棕色的並且含铁量高(大于10-4ppb)。
作为另一个例子,用品位较低的汽相法二氧化硅(其含氧化铁为1600±160ppb)通过溶胶/凝胶工艺来制造多孔二氧化硅棒。在进行了如上所述的第二种样品的加热处理之后,所产生的玻璃仅含140(±14)ppb的氧化铁。与之相比,一种在光纤生产中用作基管的这类工业用二氧化硅管,含有500(±50)ppb的氧化铁。
上述讨论表明,在基本无氧气的含卤素的气氛中对多孔二氧化硅基质进行热处理,可以大大减少多孔基质中在固结二氧化硅玻璃之前大多数杂质元素的浓度。这样具有几个有利的结果。不仅在多孔基质的制备中可以使用便宜的粗料(例如工业用汽相法二氧化硅),而且可以在相当“脏”的环境(例如用金属器具抽送溶胶)中生产该材料,並且在多孔基质的生产中可以使用有机和/或无机粘接剂和/或凝胶剂。比如可以使用LUDOX钠稳定胶态二氧化硅,而不用顾及甚至含有少量的钠(一般在表面)的多孔二氧化硅在固结处理时会失去透明性。这个讨论还表明,与以往工艺中没有特别注意提供基本无氧的气氛处理相比严格地排除O2(最好在气氛中同时加入适量的CO和CO2),大大地改善了杂质的去除。
在中等温度处理完成之后,组合体(其中装有芯棒的管子)在更高的温度下加热固结。一般达到的最高温度在1200~1600℃之间,並且始终低于管材的软化温度。在把管热压结到芯棒上以致(最好是基本上无孔)整体的玻璃基质(“预制棒”)生成后,一般要使该预制棒冷却,並用通常的方法把该预制棒拉制成光纤。图4表示根据本发明制成的预制棒的折射率分布曲线。人们已熟知,用预制棒拉制的光纤具有与该预制棒相同的折射率分布,图4具有适当刻度的半径坐标。
实施例Ⅰ:
300克工业生产的胶态二氧化硅料(DEGUSSA公司的产品,AEROSIL OX-50),其一般表面积为50米2/克,用剪式搅拌机将其散布到水中(44%的SiO2重量比)。(OX-50具有相当大范围值的粒子尺寸,从约5到约100毫微米。在某些溶胶/凝胶工艺中应用具有大范围尺寸的颗粒会有好处)。在此液体中加入38克含水为25%的四甲基氢氧化铵溶液並混匀之。用容积为1升的硼硅酸盐容器装上二氧化硅球来球磨该溶胶24小时。然后将此溶胶抽气以去除气泡,加入4.5克的甲酸甲酯,将溶胶慢慢地混匀然后注入管模具中(外径28毫米,内径5毫米)。注入后10分钟之内发生胶凝。从模具中取出此管状的胶凝体並在空气中干燥,结果制出了内径孔约为4毫米的多孔二氧化硅管。
将工业生产的二氧化硅芯棒(Lightwave Technologg公司产品,Van Nuys,California),其直径约3.8毫米並且具有大体如图2所示的折射率分布,依次用三氯乙烯、异丙醇和水来清洗,並且插进一支多孔二氧化硅管的内腔中。然后将这个组合体置于加热罩中,该罩尽量减少空气的进入使加热后受控的气氛中进行。把装有芯/管组合体的罩往下放进垂直加热炉的热区(400℃)两小时以上,在氧气气氛中再保温400℃达6小时。温度然后逐步升高到1000℃,罩内的气氛是84%的He,10%的O2和6%的Cl2,然后将此组合体保温在1000℃达4小时。在头桓鲂∈蹦谄帐?4%的He和6%的Cl2,在下两个小时内气氛是90%的He和10%的O2,在末一个小时内是100%的He,保温之后在4小时内把组合体加热到1400℃,在此温度下保持1小时,全部过程是处在100%的He气氛中。然后炉体降温至400℃,从炉内取出这样制成的单一玻璃体(预制棒)。然后该预制棒用火焰抛光整形,用该预制棒拉制出光纤,这些都按技术上熟知的程序步骤进行。预制棒的折射率分布大体如图4所示。在1.3微米和1.55微米处,该光纤(λco<1.3微米)的损耗<0.5分贝/千米。
实施例Ⅱ和实施例Ⅲ:
大体上如实施例Ⅰ中所述的那样制备另外两种预制棒,並由此棒拉制光纤,只是有以下不同处理:在抛光之后,一个芯棒在氢氟酸中作冷腐蚀(直径约减少了0.33毫米),另一个芯棒用火焰抛光。由前一种预制棒中拉制出的光纤的损耗基本上与例Ⅰ的光纤损耗相同,而从后一种预制棒中拉制出的光纤在波长大于、等于1.3微米处有稍高的损耗,在低于约1.2微米时的损耗要高很多。
实施例Ⅳ:
光纤制造基本上如实例Ⅰ中所述,而不同点在于4毫米直径的芯棒有1毫米直径的掺GeO2的芯(△+=0.27%)和掺氟的包覆层(△-=0.13%),並且在1000℃的氧处理之后,将SiF4(2毫升/分)引入He的气流中,而且此He+SiF4气流一直保持到1400℃的保温完成之后。此光纤在1.3和1.5微米处损耗小于1分贝/千米。
实施例Ⅴ:
光纤制造基本如实例Ⅰ中所述。不同点在于热处理过程是把加热罩内的芯/管组合体放低,以0.5厘米/分的速率通过炉体的热区(1000℃,气流是1升/分的He,100毫升/分的Cl2)並且在整个组合体通过此热区后,把炉温提高到1400℃,然后以0.5厘米/分的速率提升加热罩中的组合体通过这个热区(气氛为100%的He)。该光纤在1.3和1.55微米处损耗小于1分贝/千米。
实施例Ⅵ:
多孔二氧化硅材料的制备方法是:把重量为40份的汽相法二氧化硅(CAB-O-S1L M5,通常表面积为200米2/克,Cabot公司产品)和100份重量的水相混合,使产生的溶胶成为凝胶,使凝胶干燥,並在900℃下加热处理此多孔的二氧化硅材料。将此材料的碎块磨成粉末再加入水中(55份重量的SiO2与100份重量的H2O)。其中再加入0.09份重量的非离子型表面活性剂(Kodak公司的PHOTO FLOW 200)。然后将此混匀的溶胶再注入到模子中,可制成50厘米长的同轴SiO2玻璃管。外管的内径是38毫米,内管的外径是7毫米。在模中使溶胶凝胶,把凝胶管从模子中取出并在空气中干燥。将一根纯二氧化硅棒(直径4毫米)置于多孔二氧化硅管的内径中,在含Cl2的气氛中加热1000℃16小时使此复合体脱水,然后在1000℃温度下He-0.5%SiF4气氛中进行氟处理3小时。然后在He-5%SiF4气氛中通过以200℃/小时的速率升温至1300℃加热此组合体,使多孔玻璃管固结並热压结在芯棒上,继而将加热炉冷却。这个工艺过程制造出基本上无气泡的预制棒,其芯区折射率为no,並且其包覆层折射率降低(△- n=0.006)。光导纤维由此预制棒拉制而成。
实施例Ⅶ:
基本上如实施例Ⅰ所述,溶胶配制后注入到模子中去,但是不向溶胶中加甲酸甲酯。该溶胶不成凝胶体。
实施例Ⅷ:
溶胶的制备基本上如实施例Ⅰ所述。所不同的是使用CAB-O-SIL M5(通常表面积为200米2/克)来代替AEROSIL OX-50(通常表面积为50米2/克)。这种溶胶变得太粘而无法搅拌或与甲酸甲酯混合,並且不能注模。
实施例Ⅸ:
溶胶配制基本上如实施例Ⅰ所述,不同点在于既不加入氢氧化季铵也不加入甲酸甲酯。在搅拌均匀后将溶胶注入到模子中,但是不成凝胶。
实施例Ⅹ:
以1∶4∶4的比例混合原硅酸四酯(TEOS),乙醇和水。向其中加入0.9%试剂级HCl,将溶液混匀,放置一夜后,如实施例Ⅰ中所述注入管模中。使溶胶成为凝胶,把凝胶管从模中推出並在空气中干燥。在干燥时多孔玻璃管破裂。因此这个示范制造多孔二氧化硅管的方法不能制出适用于本发明方法的管材。
Claims (10)
1、一种二氧化硅基质光导纤维的制作方法,它包括:
(a)把二氧化硅基质玻璃棒插入具有软化温度的二氧化硅基质管中並加热这样构成的组合体,从而获得整体的玻璃材料(被称为“预制棒”);並且
(b)用此预制棒拉制出光导纤维;
其特征在于:二氧化硅基质管是一个多孔的玻璃管,其密度值范围是该管材理论密度值的约10%到约80%,a步骤包括使多孔玻璃管固结使之成为基本上无孔的玻璃,並且以如下方式进行,即该组合体达到的最高温度低于此管材的软化温度。
2、根据权利要求1所述的方法,它包括加热该组合体以便通过把该管与玻璃棒沿着组合体逐步地粘结起来而制造出整体材料。
3、根据权利要求1和2中任一权利要求所述的方法,它包括使用由包含制备管状凝胶体的方法来制造出的二氧化硅基质的多孔玻璃管。
4、根据权利要求1所述的方法,其中至少有一部分(a)过程的进行是使玻璃管的多孔材料与包含有卤素的气氛接触,进而与基本上无氧气的气氛接触,而卤素是从包括氯和氟在内的那族元素中选出的。
5、根据权利要求3所述的方法,其中管状凝胶体的制备包括有含二氧化硅颗粒的溶胶的配制,该二氧化硅颗粒具有标定的表面积值范围在5~100平方米/克。
6、根据权利要求3和5中任一权利要求的方法,其中管状凝胶体的制备包括配制溶胶使其具有的PH值范围在11~14,並且进一步还包括向溶胶中加入至少一种降低PH值的物质,使溶胶的PH值范围变成4~11。
7、根据权利要求1~6中任一权利要求的方法,它包括制备直径为D的玻璃棒,该棒具有相对高折射率的中心区(“芯”部)和有效芯直径d,芯部被具有相对低折射率的区域紧密包覆着,比值D/d在2和6之间。
8、根据权利要求4所述的方法,它包括在加热处理阶段保持氧/卤素(氯或氟)气体的分压比值在小于或等于10-3的值上。
9、根据权利要求1-8中任一权利要求的方法,它包括制备含有相当高浓度的至少一种化学物质作为杂质的多孔管材,並且实施步骤(a)以使固结了的管材料含有相对低浓度的该种化学物质的杂质。
10、根据权利要求1-9中任一权利要求的方法,其中包括
ⅰ.配制含有二氧化硅颗粒的水溶胶,该二氧化硅粒子具有标定的表面积值范围在20-100平方米/克以及相当宽范围的颗粒尺寸分布,该溶胶进一步还含有足够多的氢氧化季铵,以使PH值范围在11~14。
ⅱ.把甲酸烷基酯加入到该溶胶中使PH值范围在4~11;並且
ⅲ.步骤(a)的最高温度大约为1600℃。
