              发明的技术背景
保持褶皱式过滤器中相等的褶皱间隔的愿望在本领域中是众所周知的。通过保持相等的褶皱间隔,过滤器的表面积为最大,这使得过滤器的效力和寿命也最大,同时使通过滤器的压降最小。

发明人已经发现,由于第一薄板40具有一单个纵向接缝42,并再加拉力紧紧地靠着外褶皱尖端36,所以第一薄板40拉紧地通过相继的外褶皱尖端36延伸,不会产生任何显著的松驰或褶皱。另外,被拉紧的第一薄板40朝着外褶皱尖端36施加一均匀分配的向心力,这样与一最好由金属或塑料制成的过滤器20的穿孔的结构内衬41相平衡。平衡的向心力提高了过滤器20的刚度,并且有助于褶皱间保持相等的间隔。
可以理解,第一薄板40还可在组装和使用过滤器20时起到保护滤芯28的作用,从而不再需要附加的保护罩,例如由穿孔的金属或塑料构成的传统外衬。
圆柱形过滤器20还包括一基本上无弹性的可渗透第二薄板44,它包括一最好覆盖滤芯28整个最内部边界的内衬。第二薄板44通过相继的内褶皱尖端38延伸,并与内褶皱尖端38粘接,用来保持褶皱34的间隔,以向滤芯28提供附加的刚度。为了一些过滤的应用情况,第二薄板44向滤芯提供足够的支撑,使得不必再需要对过滤器20的结构内衬42提供附加的结构支撑。
参照图3A和3B,每块第一和第二薄板40、44都最好包括许多由诸如聚酯、聚酰胺或聚丙烯等塑料材料制成的随机排列的长丝46。在长丝46间的连接点48处长丝46彼此粘接。可以理解长丝可以如图3A所示是直的,也可以如图3B所示是卷曲的。
许多随机排列的长丝46在第一和第二薄板40、44内形成了许多随机间隔开的和成形的开口50。由于它们是随机排列的,所以长丝沿所有方向提供相等强度。另外在使用过滤器20时,与典型的作用于薄板40、44上的力相比,长丝46相对没有弹性。关于这一点,已由发明人发现,长丝46相对的无弹性使薄板40、44的伸展减至最小,从而允许薄板40、44牢固地保持褶皱34的间隔。
发明人还发现了第一和第二薄板40、44与渗透性和厚度相关的重要物理特性。关于这一点,希望第一和第二薄板40、44都有大于500的Frazier空气渗透率以及小于0.009英寸的厚度。另外还发现,在大部分过滤情况下,在上述所确定的参数范围内设计的第一和第二薄板40、44基本上不执行过滤功能,并基本上不遭受污染负荷。另外由第一和第二薄板40、44引起的压降与由滤芯28和它上面所聚集的污染物引起的压降相比基本上是不易检测到的。
可以理解,在某些情况下,可能希望使用Frazier空气渗透率小于500、厚度大于0.009英寸的第一和第二薄板40、44。另外还可以理解,在某些其他情况下,可能希望第一和第二薄板40、44实现过滤和/或凝聚功能。
还可以理解由Reemay公司制造的商标为Reemay的聚酯纤维可有效地用来制成第一和第二薄板40、44。Reemay公司制造的商标为Typar的聚丙烯纤维也可以有效地用来制成第一和第二薄板40、44。另外Fiberweb NorthAmerica公司制造的商标为Cerex的纤维也适于用来制成第一和第二薄板40、44。
在操作中,圆柱形过滤器20将污染物从液体中过滤出来。较可取地是,使受污染的液体不受任何可测量到的压降以及不经历任何由第一薄板40所产生的过滤作用,而流经第一薄板40内的开口50。然后受污染的液体流经滤芯28,从而将污染物从液体中除去。褶皱34间隔的不匀称以及滤芯28的不均匀污染负载产生了液体趋向于流过的较小阻力的通道。液体通过滤芯28的不均匀流动在滤芯28上产生一侧向力,它加速褶皱34集拢,聚束或者瓦解。但是,因为第一和第二薄板40、44与该侧向力相比相对无弹性,并且与它们各自的褶皱尖端36、38的整个边缘37、39粘接,还因为第一薄板40通过外褶皱尖端38被紧紧地拉伸,第一和第二薄板40、44克服和平衡由不均匀液体流动产生的侧向力,从而保持了褶皱34的间隔,并且防止了褶皱34的集拢、聚束和瓦解。
一旦液体流经滤芯28,然后,较可取地是,在它不遭受任何可测量到的压降的情况下流过第二薄板44。与第一薄板40类似,较可取地是,第二薄板44对液体基本不提供过滤效果,因此也不遭受任何明显的污染物负载。作为过程的最后一步,被过滤的液体通过第二端盖24的圆孔25,流出圆柱形过滤器20。
可以理解,圆柱形过滤器20可以作为一个液体过滤器或一个空气过滤器很好地工作。圆柱形过滤器20在油中进行了穿过滤芯28的150psi的压降测试,不产生任何通常的褶皱的聚束,而在不具有褶皱尖端固定装置的普通液体过滤器中,最小的压降也会产生褶皱的聚束。
本领域的普通技术人员可以理解,在不超出本发明范围或精神的情况下,在本发明的使用和结构方面,可以进行不同的修改和变化。关于这一点,可以理解,该圆柱形过滤器20仅是使用本发明褶皱尖端固定装置来保持褶皱尖端间隔的一个圆柱形过滤器实施例。目前存在许多圆柱形过滤器的设计,并且通过圆柱形过滤器20说明的本发明具体实施例并不理解为对本发明的限制。
作为一个典型的修改,可以由一尿脘封装化合物代替金属端盖22、24来固定过滤器20的端部30、32。另外,本发明的某些实施例可以仅使用第一薄板40来保持滤芯28的褶皱34的间隔。为了许多应用,包围滤芯28的最外部边界并且位于流动上游的第一薄板将对外褶皱尖端36提供足够的支撑,从而防止褶皱34的移动和保持褶皱34适当的间隔。
参照图4A至4E,将通过制造过程中各个阶段的圆柱形过滤器来说明圆柱形过滤器20。在制造的第一步骤中,如图4A所示,圆柱形过滤器20的滤芯28包括一片从一卷中展开的基本上扁平的过滤纸。
如图4B所示,制造的第二步骤是通过一传统的折叠技术将滤芯28折叠以形成滤芯28的褶皱34。在折叠中,相继的内褶皱尖端38形成一基本上呈平面形的滤芯28第一边界,同时相继的外褶皱尖端36形成一基本上呈平面形的滤芯28第二边界。滤芯28的第一边界相对于滤芯28的第二边界,并与它平行。已折叠的滤芯28还具有一第一端部55和一第二端部57。
制造过程的第三步骤涉及到将第二薄板44施加到滤芯28的内褶皱尖端38上。关于这一点,滤芯28的褶皱34被集拢或收缩在一起,并且当滤芯28如图4C所示一平面状态时,将第二薄板44与内褶皱尖端38固定。在固定时,第二薄板44具有与圆柱形内边界的尺寸相应的尺寸,这个圆柱形内边界是当滤芯28被结合进圆柱形过滤器20时,由滤芯28的内褶皱尖端38所形成的。
较可取地是,通过在内褶皱尖端38和第二薄板44间放置一片热敏粘胶剂,如由Bostik公司制造的非织造网热熔胶,并且向第二薄板44加热激活热敏粘胶剂,使第二薄板44与内褶皱尖端38固定。当加热热敏粘胶剂片时,它熔化进入内褶皱尖端38和第二薄板44,一旦变硬后,就有效地将第二薄板与内褶皱尖端38结合在一起。可以理解,也可通过替换的固定技术如喷洒粘胶或热熔化使第二薄板44与内褶皱尖端38结合。
制造过程的第四步骤与通常围着过滤器20的结构内衬41卷起滤芯28有关,这样内褶皱尖端38形成一基本上呈圆柱形的由第二薄板44覆盖的内边界,并且外褶皱尖端36形成一基本上呈圆柱形的外边界。发明人发现因为第二薄板44与内褶皱尖端38固定,滤芯28有充分的容积,可以容易地处理并卷成圆柱形。当滤芯28被支撑在结构内衬41上时,滤芯28卷成圆柱形,并且如图4D所示,滤芯28的第一和第二端部55和57将被永久地相互固定。
如图4E所示,圆柱形过滤器20生产过程的第五步骤包括将第一薄板40贴到滤芯28的圆柱形外边界上。较可取地是,通过将一片热敏粘胶剂,如非织造网热熔胶,围着滤芯28的整个外圆柱形边界包绕,可以使第一薄板40与外褶皱尖端36固定。第一薄板40围着滤芯28的整个外圆柱形边界包绕,这样,热敏粘胶剂片就被置于第一薄板40与外褶皱尖端36之间。
当第一薄板40围着滤芯28包绕时,第一薄板40的端部相互重叠,并且可通过普通的固定技术,如粘接或热熔,相互结合而形成一纵向的接缝42。在另一方案中,第一薄板40的端部可以齐平,并且纵向接缝可以通过一条固定于端部上的条状材料或一层覆盖在端部上的树脂而固定。
一旦将第一薄板40接合,就向第一薄板加热。热量使得第一薄板40靠着外褶皱尖端36收缩配合,同时激活热敏粘胶剂使得热敏粘胶剂熔化进入外褶皱尖端36和第一薄板40,有效地将第一薄板与外褶皱尖端36的整个边缘37结合。可以理解,还可使用例如喷洒粘接剂的其它粘接方法将第一薄板40粘合到外褶皱尖端36上。还可以理解,通过其他方法,例如将其外径比滤芯28的内径稍大的内衬强制插入滤芯29的中心,可以对第一薄板40再加拉力。
制造圆柱形过滤器20的最后步骤包括将第一和第二端盖22、24固定于滤芯28。关于这一点,较可取地是,可以将封装化合物施加在第一和第二端盖22、24上。然后,如图1所示,通过封装化合物将第一和第二端盖22、24与滤芯28的第一和第二端30、32粘接。
对于本领域的普通技术人员很明显的是,本发明还包括用来制造圆柱形过滤器的修改的方法,在这些方法中可以改变加工步骤的顺序,或者去除过程中的某些步骤。例如,为了制造一不包含覆盖基本上呈圆柱形的滤芯28内边界的第二薄板44的圆柱形过滤器,可能从制造过程中去除上述第三步骤。另外,当滤芯28处于平面状态并且形成基本上为平面形的第二边界时,可能希望将第一薄板40与滤芯28的外褶皱尖端36固定。然后,可能将滤芯28卷成圆柱形,并使滤芯28的第一和第二端部55、57永久固定在一起,这样第一薄板40围着滤芯28基本上呈圆柱形的外边界包绕。较可取地是,可以通过一树脂或一条材料固定纵向接缝42来增强第一薄板40的端部。这个修改过程最好被用来制造仅包括用来保持褶皱34间隔的第一薄板40的一圆柱形过滤器。
还可以理解,在某些应用场合,可以从过滤器20中去除结构内衬41。
现在请参阅图5,来说明本发明的另一过滤器120。该过滤器120包括一较好由普通过滤纸制成的滤芯128。将滤芯128折叠形成一系列相互连接的褶皱134。褶皱134包括相继的进口褶皱尖端136,它具有形成基本上呈平面形的滤芯128的进口边界的最外边缘137。类似地,褶皱还包括相继的出口褶皱尖端138,它具有形成基本上呈平面的滤芯128的出口边界的第二最外边缘139。
过滤器120还包括一第一薄板140,它包括覆盖滤芯128的整个进口边界的一内衬。第一薄板140通过滤芯128的进口褶皱尖端136延伸并与它粘接。类似地,过滤器120还包括一第二薄板144,它包括一覆盖滤芯128的整个出口边界的内衬。第二薄板144通过滤芯128的出口褶皱尖端138延伸并与它粘接。
可以理解,第一和第二薄板140、144可以由与前述圆柱形过滤器20的第一和第二薄板40、44相同的材料制成。另外,对于第一和第二薄板140、144,较可取地是,通过热敏粘胶剂使它们与各自的褶皱尖端136、138的整个长度固定。但是,可以理解,可以使用任何普通的粘接剂。
由于较可取地是使第一和第二薄板140、144与它们各自的褶皱尖端136、138的整个长度固定,所以第一和第二薄板140、144防止了褶皱134的移动,并且增强了过滤器120的刚度。可以通过将由厚纸板或相似材料制成的长方形端盖131与滤芯128的第一和第二端盖130、132粘接,进一步提高过滤器120的刚度。可以理解,第一和第二端130、132也可以由一替换的材料,诸如树脂或封装化合物覆盖,任何一种材料都可以提供将衬垫133附着于过滤器120周围的一表面。
由于通过第一和第二薄板140、144提供给过滤器120的刚度,可以理解,在许多应用中,过滤器120不要求目前过滤器中通常所采用的外部框架。另外,可以理解,通过将大的薄板与大的褶皱的滤芯固定,然后再将大的滤芯切割成所需尺寸的过滤器,就可以大规模地制造过滤器120。这种类型的制造过程理想地适于自动化。在某些用途中,也可以理解,一过滤器也可以仅具有用来保持褶皱间隔的一张薄板构成。对于这种类型的过滤器,希望具有用来保持褶皱间隔而覆盖住过滤器进口边界的一薄板。
关于上述说明,可以理解,在不脱离本发明范围的前提下在细节上可作修改,特别是零件的形状、尺寸和结构。但是说明和描述的实施例仅作为示例,下述权利要求书的广泛含义指出了本发明的真正范围和精神。

Claims (24)

1.一种过滤器,它包括:
一滤芯,它具有一系列相互连接的褶皱,褶皱具有相继的间隔的褶皱尖端,褶皱尖端形成一基本上呈圆柱形的滤芯边界;以及
一可渗透的、基本上无弹性的、紧紧覆盖滤芯边界,以保持褶皱间隔的薄板,薄板围着滤芯包绕并通过对薄板加热使它靠着滤芯的褶皱尖端收缩配合。
2.如权利要求1所述的过滤器,其特征在于,薄板是粘接于褶皱尖端上,并包括许多随机排列的塑性长丝,它们在长丝间的连接点处彼此粘接,并形成许多随机间隔和成形的开口,以用来允许基本不受限制的液体流经薄板。
3.如权利要求1所述的过滤器,其特征在于,薄板具有的Frazier空气渗透率大于500。
4.如权利要求1所述的过滤器,其特征在于,每个褶皱尖端形成一边缘,并且薄板基本与每个褶皱尖端的整个边缘粘接固定。
5.如权利要求1所述的过滤器,其特征在于,通过热敏粘胶剂将薄板与褶皱尖端粘接。
6.如权利要求1所述的过滤器,其特征在于,薄板具有的厚度小于0.009英寸。
7.一种过滤器,它包括:

一可渗透的、基本上无弹性的、紧紧覆盖滤芯边界的薄板,薄板具有一纵向接缝,并且靠着滤芯的褶皱尖端再加拉力,这样薄板拉紧地通过相继的褶皱尖端延伸,薄板与褶皱尖端粘接以保持褶皱的间隔。
8.如权利要求7所述的过滤器,其特征在于,薄板包括许多随机排列的塑性长丝,它们在长丝间的连接点处彼此粘合,并形成许多随机间隔和成形的开口,以用来允许基本不受限制的液体流经薄板。
9.一种过滤器,它包括:
一滤芯,它具有一系列相互连接的褶皱,褶皱具有相继的外褶皱尖端和相继的内褶皱尖端,外褶皱尖端形成一滤芯的基本上呈圆柱形的外边界,而内褶皱尖端形成一滤芯的基本上呈圆柱形的内边界;
一可渗透的基本上无弹性的、紧紧覆盖滤芯外边界的第一薄板,第一薄板被围着滤芯包绕并且靠着滤芯外褶皱尖端再加拉力,第一薄板通过相继的外褶皱尖端延伸,并与外褶皱尖端粘接以用来保持褶皱的间隔;
一可渗透的基本上无弹性的、覆盖滤芯内边界的第二薄板,第二薄板通过相继的内褶皱尖端延伸,并与内褶皱尖端粘接固定以用来保持褶皱的间隔。

一可渗透的基本上无弹性的覆盖滤芯出口边界的第二薄板,第二薄板通过相继的出口褶皱尖端延伸,并与出口褶皱尖端粘接,以用来保持褶皱的间隔;

16.一种制造圆柱形过滤器的方法,它包括:

c)将滤芯卷起,使得褶皱尖端形成一基本上呈圆柱形的滤芯的边界,并被与褶皱尖端粘接的可渗透薄板所覆盖。
17.一种制造圆柱形过滤器的方法,它包括:
a)提供一具有一系列相互连接褶皱的褶皱式滤芯,褶皱具有相继的第一褶皱尖端和相继的第二褶皱尖端,第一褶皱尖端形成一基本上呈平面形的滤芯的第一边界,第二褶皱尖端形成一基本上呈平面形的滤芯的第二边界;
b)将可渗透的第一薄板与第一褶皱尖端粘接固定,使得第一薄板通过相继的第一褶皱尖端,沿着平面形的第一边界延伸;
c)将滤芯卷成一圆柱形,使得第一褶皱尖端形成一基本上呈圆柱形的滤芯的内边界,并被第一薄板所覆盖,并且第二褶皱尖端形成一基本上呈圆柱形的滤芯的外边界;以及
d)将一第二薄板与第二褶皱尖端粘接固定,使得第二薄板覆盖基本上呈圆柱形的滤芯的外边界。
18.一种如权利要求17所述的制造过滤器的方法,进一步包括将第二薄板围着呈圆柱形的滤芯的外边界再加拉力的步骤。
19.一种如权利要求18所述的制造过滤器的方法,其特征在于,通过加热收缩配合第二薄板来对第二薄板进行再加拉力。
20.一种制造圆柱形过滤器的方法,它包括:
a)提供一具有一系列相互连接褶皱的滤芯,褶皱具有连续间隔的褶皱尖端,褶皱尖端形成一基本上呈圆柱形的滤芯的边界;
b)将一粘胶附在褶皱尖端上;
c)将一可渗透的薄板围着滤芯的边界设置,使得薄板通过褶皱尖端延伸;以及
d)将薄板靠着褶皱尖端、围着过滤器圆柱形边界再加拉力。
21.如权利要求20所述的制造圆柱形过滤器的方法,其特征在于,通过对薄板加热,使薄板收缩配合来对薄板再加拉力。
22.如权利要求21所述的制造圆柱形过滤器的方法,其特征在于,粘合剂包括当对薄板加热时将褶皱尖端粘合于薄板的热敏粘胶剂。
23.一种制造过滤器的方法,它包括:
a)提供一具有一系列相互连接褶皱的滤芯,褶皱具有相继的入口褶皱尖端和相继的出口褶皱尖端,入口褶皱尖端形成一基本上呈平面形的滤芯的入口边界,出口褶皱尖端形成一基本上呈平面形的滤芯的出口边界;
b)将一可渗透的基本无弹性的第一薄板与入口褶皱尖端固定,以保持褶皱的间隔,使得第一薄板覆盖滤芯的入口边界;
c)将一可渗透的基本无弹性的第二薄板与出口褶皱尖端固定以保持褶皱的间隔,使得第二薄板覆盖滤芯的出口边界;
d)将一端盖施加于滤芯的端部。
24.如权利要求23所述的制造过滤器的方法,还包括围着滤芯将一衬垫固定。
