手持式遥控器通常是由电池操作的装置，仅能在一个方向从手机向被控制的装置发出无线控制(用红外或射频)命令。即使该手机装有显示器，该显示器通常也仅仅是用来增强遥控器本身的用户接口。例如，显示遥控器的状态，或帮助遥控器的初始化安装。
因此，已经有各种远程信息显示系统，如超市货架上的价格显示，或电视机屏幕上的信息显示。而且还有其它遥控装置，包括后照明式键盘，信用卡、智能卡阅读器，以及内置式调制解调器，或用于通信的具有调制解调器的适配器(adapters)。现有的各种遥控器装置和遥控显示系统被公开在下述美国专利中：

本发明涉及一种具有显示器的遥控器，它能无线接收(通过红外或射频)信息。接收信息用于更新遥控代码的发明在Darbee et al的美国4,959,810号专利中已经公开。本发明接收信息是为了在遥控器上作广告的目的。与电视相比，其优点是遥控器上的广告能够保留，这意味着遥控器可以用作咖啡桌广告板、推销按条收费的事物(pay-per-view events)、产品、服务、可定货报价单或其它任何事物作广告。
从占用遥控器屏幕时间多少而向登广告人收费的意义上说，遥控器上的广告消息是一种信息的有效负载。因此，得到尽可能多的有效负载消息的显示时间是非常重要的。本发明在遥控器上有一个计时器，在用户结束用遥控器控制设备后，在某段时间内显示有效负载消息。
本发明的一个实施例用一个运行检测器来确定用户是否使用遥控器，在这个时间里，有效负载消息的弹出覆盖能够指示遥控器的现在状态。遥控器屏幕这样的时间和空间分享使对用户的广告消息的显示时间最长。
当遥控器与运行在电视机顶箱、电视机本身、或计算机的交互式应用连用时，出现在商业性节目间隙的交互式广告插入不延长到节目本身之中是非常重要的。在这种情况下，在交互式广告从电视机屏幕(或计算机)消失并且正常节目重新开始之后，将相应的交互式广告“拖曳”到遥控器的屏幕上，遥控器的显示可以延长用户的可利用时间。
许多遥控器可以控制的系统本身是双向的，这意味着来源于用户的信息可以被传输给“前端设备(head end)”或被“前端设备”所读。这种系统允许用户进行事务处理，例如，只需要按一下遥控器上的按钮以响应广告插入(advertising offers)。在与这种双向媒体连接后，广告插入能够出现在产生用户响应的同一个遥控器上，这样绕过电视机或微机可以作为一种显示装置。
在将广告传送给遥控器的传送媒体不是双向式的情况下，可以提供一个“旁路”系统将信号返回给中央计算机。例如，一个廉价的无线电发射器在遥控状态下能够发送数据给与用户电话线相连的自动拨号装置调制解调器，然后用户响应广告插入可以通过电话发送给中央计算机。
电缆、卫星、或广播电视都是向遥控器传送信息的常用工具，利用机顶箱或电视机本身的接收电路，通过红外或射频无线电连接到遥控器。然而，电缆、卫星、或广播电视的旁路下行连接到遥控器也是可能的，即利用寻呼网络、无线电台的FM SCA数据、调制解调器用无线连接到遥控器、或者计算机反过来通过无线线路与远程网相连。
无论电视机或计算机是否打开，在遥控器上的显示总是活性的、可读的，这一事实是对用户广告插入的利用时间的一个重要延伸。
为了适应通常可利用的发送装置与遥控器之间的无线连接的狭窄带宽，图象在发送给遥控器之前被压缩。无论是位图图像，还是可以被发送到运行在该遥控器上的一个GDI(图形装置接口)的绘图命令，都可以用任何一种已知的压缩算法压缩，如用JPEG算法压缩。
由于遥控器能接收可执行代码以及静态图象，该遥控器能够显示动画图形，运行与用户的交互式对话，或使自己的软件升级以增强它的用途。
这样，按照本发明提供的遥控器，它包括一个视频显示器；用于接收来自主机设备的数据第一无线电电路，该数据包括选定的被显示的信息；用于发送信息的第二无线电电路；控制电路以及控制遥控器操作的软件，该软件包括一个超时程序和一个显示缺省程序，该显示缺省程序用于返回到显示器显示第一无线电路所接收的选定的信息。

详见图1，图1是按照本发明的遥控器10，它包括一个顶面控制板12，其上有一个LCD视频显示器14，以及一个键盘15，它包括一个音量选择按钮16、一个信道选择按钮18、一个MODE按钮20和一个SHIFT按钮22等。
参见图2，遥控器10包括电路26，它包括一个由电源30供电的微控制器或微处理器28，以及包括电池32的监控电路31，电池32也与IR发射电路34和接收电路35相连。
EEPROM 386和键盘电路38也与微处理器28连接。
一个ROM/RAM电路40与总线42连接，微处理器28和LCD驱动电路44与总线42连接。
如果需要，一个运行检测电路46也可以连接于微处理器28。
在某些实施例中，射频发射接收器48与微处理器28相连，在某些实施例中，有一个声音或语言合成芯片50与话筒51及微处理器28连接。
而且，如果需要，遥控器10可以包括一个智能卡或信用卡阅读器52。
再有，还可以有一个振动机构55，从遥控器10向用户产生触感。
如图3A-3D所示，监控电路31包括一个复位电路53和一个电源退耦电路54。电路26还包括一个与微处理器28和RS232串行端口58连接的振荡器56。
在遥控操作中，通常的操作一般是用遥控器10完成的。
软件协议存储在遥控器10的ROM/RAM40中，如图5所示。其中，视频显示器定义为图形主屏(Graphical Home Screen)。
按照本发明的教导，遥控器10是编程的，以便当遥控器10时没有被用户使用或处于静态时广告显示在其屏幕上。
在这方面，如图5所示，当键盘15上的一个键被按下时，根据所按下的键就做出一个决定。如果是箭头向上或向下的键，则程序进入子程序A。如果被按下的键是IR发送键，则程序进入子程序B。
然后，如果被按下的键是SHIFT键，则程序设置一个移位标志。在下一个键被按下后，如果移位标志被设置，则子程序进入如图6所示的程序，并且发出一个与位移键相关的函数，如图所示。如果移位键被按下保持5秒钟，或被按下第二次，则遥控器指向安装菜单，诸如电视机遥控系统领域的技术人员所熟知的类型的安装菜单。如果不，则程序指向如图5所示的MODE方框图。
应当明白，本发明的一个重要特性是示于图5每个子程序A-G末端和图6所示子程序末端的“超时程序之后的恢复屏幕”。
如图7所示，当MODE键被压下时，遥控器程序指向电缆箱菜单，或电视菜单，或VCR菜单，或辅助装置菜单，并且根据按下MODE键、Up键、Down键、+键、-键，可以在这些菜单中循环。
如图5所示，如果电源为低，子程序将指向“low battery”程序，如果按下该键，该程序弹出一个三秒钟的低电源消息。
遥控器10可以被构造成、设置成和编程成有或提供许多特性，例如，即使当遥控器处于静态或被关闭时，软件可以保持所选择的信息在视频显示器上显示。
应当明白，与遥控器通信的主机设备，无论是用红外(34，35)还是用射频(48)接收或传送信息，可以是一个电缆解码器箱、卫星解码器箱、电话公司解码器箱、电视机或计算机。
无线射频发射和接收电路48可以构造和设置成从远距离发射装置，如寻呼网络、FM/SCA、蜂窝式电话、数字通信系统(如PCS，PDM，CDM)或其它射频发射装置，接收射频数据。
如果需要，遥控器10可以构造和设置成用调制解调器交换信息，并且操作调制解调器的信息可以在遥控器10里面，参见Escobosa和Darbee的5,537,463号美国专利。
遥控器10的存储器RAN/ROM 40可以包括一个缓冲存储器，它能够按照遥控器10中实时时钟的指令存储用来被显示的信息，遥控器10可以包括用来向主机设备询问日期/时间信息的软件和/或硬件。
视频显示器14是双稳态的。因此不需要刷新缓冲器，也不需要电源来保持视频显示器14上的图像。
从主机设备接收的信息可以是压缩形式，可以是绘图指令形式，这样软件包括执行在视频显示器14上绘图的图形命令的指令和/或可以是用来在遥控器10上的视频显示器14上显示的电子程序引导的子集。
检测低电源条件的软件可以包括显示广告的指令，以代替具体牌号的电池。
如果需要，可以提供后照明来照明视频显示器14或键盘15的键，参见Park的5603078号美国专利。
如果需要。遥控器10也可以包括用来产生声音的电路50、51。
遥控器10还可以包括阅读器52和用来阅读信用卡上的磁条的或阅读包含一个计算机芯片的智能卡的或与智能卡接口的相关电路，参见Henderson的5,603,078号美国专利，或Bueno的5,523,689号美国专利。
运行检测电路46当遥控器10被用户使用时在给定状态下可以用来接入遥控器。
遥控器10的操作软件可以被编程成ROM/RAM中循环的缓冲存储器，以在视频显示器14上显示多种类型的信息。
红外接收电路可以被构造成从电视机屏幕(VEIL技术)接收光信号，或用可见光(TIMEX技术)从电视机屏幕接收其它闪光形式。
遥控器10可以包括用来移动视频显示器14上或主机显示器上的光标的指点器电路。参见U.S.S.N.08/605,554：提供无线电指示器电路的系统。
视频显示器14可以包括在手持式遥控器10的背面、视频显示器14下面的触敏显示器屏幕或触敏垫/键，参见Goldstein的5,410,326号美国专利。
本文公开的遥控器10的一个重要特性是将广告保持显示器10上以及用户面前的能力。一个次要的特性是遥控器10不仅能显示广告，而且有一个输入口，例如键盘上的某些键，用户能用这些键通过无线电、红外或射频通信连接响应广告插入。
接收的、甚至显示的信息可以包括：与万维网页面上标识相同方式格式化的广告；来自出现在主机设备的广告的“尾部”，这样给用户更多的时间响应广告插入；在遥控器10上玩的游戏；使遥控器升级的代码；用来安装遥控器10的指令；用遥控器10而不是模式数或任意编码数控制的制造商电子设备名称；用显示键标识的能力安装遥控器10的指令，当用户按下遥控器10的键盘15的一个键，指明遥控器10正在控制那个功能；用户指南和/或在遥控器10的视频显示器14显示与上下文有关的帮助；以及在遥控器上运行的可执行代码。
从前面的描述可以清楚地知道，本发明的具有广告显示的双向遥控器有许多优点，有些已经在上面描述过，另一些是本发明所固有的。也应当明白，对上面描述的遥控器可以做出许多改进而并不脱离本发明的教导。因此，本发明的范围仅仅用权利要求限定是必要的。

Claims (13)

1.一种遥控器，包括一个视频显示器；用来从主机设备接收数据的无线装置，该数据包括选定的被显示、存储或处理的信息，无线装置用于发送信息；控制装置，包括软件和控制所述遥控器操作的电路；以及当用户不用所述的遥控器执行一项功能时，保持所述的选定的信息在所述的视频显示器上显示的装置。
2.如权利要求1的遥控器，其中，即使当所述的遥控器处于静态或关闭时，所述的软件保持所述的选定的信息在所述显示器显示。
3.如权利要求1的遥控器，其中，主机设备基本上从包括下述设备的一组设备中选定：电缆解码箱、卫星解码箱、电话公司的解码箱、电视机或计算机。
4.如权利要求1的遥控器，其中，所述的用来接收数据的无线装置被构造成和被设置成从远距离发射的装置，例如寻呼网络、FM/SCA、蜂窝式电话、PSC或其它射频发射装置，接收射频数据。
5.如权利要求1的遥控器，其中所述的无线装置被构造成和被设置成用调制解调器交换信息。
6.如权利要求1的遥控器，包括一个在所述的遥控器的实时时钟的命令下能存储被显示信息的缓冲存储器。
