Description
本发明一般涉及液晶装置,特别涉及用于光通信的利用锐角扭曲角度的扭曲向列液晶材料的空间光调制器。
背景信息
涉及液晶(LC)装置的很多以前工作针对显示装置,如平板显示器。在这方面有很多实质性的进展,光调制器和其他与液晶显示装置相关的装置没有必要解决在光通信应用中遇到的问题,而本发明首次涉及到这方面。例如,虽然转换时间的减少在液晶显示装置方面具有某些用处,但在光通信系统中这个因素是极其重要的。已知的用于纤维光学通信的同步光学网(SONET)标准规定当发生网络中断时,恢复时间必须小于50微秒。这样,为了保证SONET系统的运行,光转换器必须在50微秒内响应。
以前的一种具有相对快速的转换时间的液晶调制器一般描述为平行或逆平行向列液晶调制器。但是,平行(或0度)和逆平行向列LC调制器具有相对差的对比度(低消光比)。特别地,由于在晶胞(cell)边界的单向分子倾斜(unidirection molecular tilt),当电场施加到晶胞时,有很大的残余双折射,使装置的消光比恶化。对于光通信应用,对比率或消光系数需要达到至少-25dB,-30dB更好,更可取的是大于-30dB至-40dB,甚至更大。虽然平行LC调制器的消光比可例如通过布置补偿双折射聚合体来改进,但这将增加其复杂性和,在很多情况下,增加调制器的成本(及可靠性)。
已知的另外一种液晶结构利用90度扭曲向列(TN)调制器来提供相对高的消光比。在例如平板显示器、空间光调制器、以及专用光图象处理器的应用中,扭曲向列(TN)液晶(LC)广泛应用于电光调制器。这些装置一般在制作中定义扭曲角为90°(传统的扭曲TN)或180°-270°(用于“超扭曲”向列(STN)结构)。本文中扭曲角为入射指向矢(director)方向与出射指向矢方向之间的角度。
典型的TN-LC调制器由下述处理制成。透明电极氧化锡铟涂覆玻璃基片一般用于晶胞壁(cell wall)。它们用校准材料,如尼龙或聚酰亚胺,来进行自旋镀膜,然后抛光,如用丝绸研磨为每个基片定义研磨方向,形成LC方向。两片基片以互呈90°的研磨方向放在一起(这里角度的测量与LC材料扭曲的检测相同,即当调制器使用右手扭曲特性的LC材料时,用右手方法计算,当调制器使用左手扭曲特性的LC材料时,用左手方法计算)。当电场应用于电极时,基片之间的液晶分子在两种状态间转换。液晶单元的厚度设计为:

这样,调制器作为可变换的半波片,其可选择性地(对应于电场的施加或不施加)将输入的线性偏振光旋转0°或90°。没有电场时,扭曲结构波引导入射光的极性旋转90°极性。有电场施加时,波导作用发生失真,偏振光只是部分旋转。利用夹在两个相交的或平行的偏振器之间的调制器,可得到模拟强度调制。在描述的TN几何性质中,边界处分子的倾斜角是互相垂直的。相信这将导致剩余双折射基本上抵消,而增加对比度。不幸的是,传统的TN调制器几乎比平行向列LC调制器慢几乎一个数量级,因其相对慢的响应时间,而不适合用于光通信应用。
因此,以前的材料和装置,有益于包括液晶显示器的许多方面,以前尚未达到光通信应用所需的高的对比度和快速转换速度。例如,可从E.MerckIndustries得到的已知材料E44,当制作成90°扭曲结构时(例如用于电信应用),其响应时间约为65微秒。如果作成平行晶胞,这样的转换时间可降低,例如小于10微秒,但这样的平行晶胞不能提供需要的对比度。
另一个影响转换时间的重要因素是调制器的厚度。转换时间大致正比于粘度而反比于厚度的平方:t∝γ/d2。这表示更快速的转换可利用低的材料粘度和更薄的晶胞来达到。为了在红外(IR)波长(例如约1550nm)下进行光通信应用,获得薄的晶胞,需要大的光双折射(在0.26阶)来保持厚度小于5微米。
因此,最好提供一种可同时达到高的对比度(如消光比大于-25到-30dB)和快速转换(如恢复时间约为50毫秒或更小),最好,工作于红外波长,及大约20℃到40℃的温度范围。
本发明概述
本发明提供了一种混合模拟/数字电光调制器,利用扭曲向列液晶结构以同时达到高的对比度和快速转换速度。此调制器的结构为两个晶胞壁的相对研磨方向或“扭曲角”既不平行,又不在90°或180°-270°。或者说扭曲角在0°到90°间,较好地位于约50°到约80°之间,最好是位于约60°到约70°之间,以提供一种锐角扭曲向列(下文ATN)液晶装置。

优选实施例的详细说明
在描述本发明的实施例前,首先对以前装置的某些方面进行描述。如上所述,以前的0°和90°结构通常包括入射和出射偏振器和入射和出射LC指向矢,如研磨的晶胞壁。图1A描述了对应以前的平行或0°调制器入射和出射偏振器112a、114a及入射和出射LC指向矢116a、118a时的相对方向。如从图1中可看到的,虽然入射和出射偏振器112a、114a的偏振方向是相交的(即正交),LC入射和出射液晶指向矢116a、118a具有相同的方向,即“扭曲角”是0°。而且,入射偏振器112a和入射LC指向矢116a相偏离45°,即其中的夹角,这里表示为“β”角,等于45°。

按照图3描述的ATN的一个实施例,上层基片的研磨方向312相对于出射或下层基片的研磨方向316定义了60°的扭曲角314。因为当偏振器方向偏移90°时研磨方向偏移60°,因此在偏振方向与入射或出射LC指向矢间(或,最好同时)存在一个角度。如图4中所描述,在一个实施例中,入射偏振器的偏振方向416与由入射LC指向矢定义的方向418间的β角412约为15°。
如图2-4所示构造的ATN调制器提供了如图5所示跨越光带宽的传送消光比512,它在逆平行调制器514中可达到的典型消光比和90°TN基调制器516达到的典型消光比之间。从图5中可看出,对于给定的最小或门限消光比(例如最小消光比-25dB),按照本发明,60°TN调制器预期可操作的带宽522比0°或逆平行装置514的操作带宽还宽。
图6描述了按照本发明的实施例,与60°ATN装置的β角有关的消光比计算方式。如图6中看到的,β角为13°的装置可在带宽612达到消光门限-25dB,其带宽窄于通过利用15°β角来达到的带宽614。减少β角到10°,预期结果为消光比616绝不会常规-20dB。另一方面,如果β角超过约15°,装置所达到的对比度或消光比开始恶化。对于按照本发明的实施例的装置,对β角计算出的灵敏度,如图6所描述,建议在制造装置时需注意达到所需要的β角(例如对60°ATN,约15°)是有好处的。
如图7A描述,利用平行偏振器构成的按照本发明实施例的60°ATN调制器提供的消光比712,在从1525nm到1575nm的波长范围内在-30dB与-43dB之间。按照本发明,当在类似60°TN装置上设置正交偏振器时,在同样的波长范围内的消光比714(图7B)约为-26dB。扭曲角增加到70°所构造的装置的消光比716(图7C)能够超过-30dB。
这样通过图7A-7C可看到,按照本发明所构造的ATN装置能够达到需要的大于-25dB的消光比。图8和9表示了按照本发明的ATN装置也能够达到需要的低于50微秒的转换时间。如图8所示,当所施加的电压812发生变化时,按照本发明,具有平行偏振器的60°ATN晶胞能够在40℃时在约10微秒的时间段814内达到需要的光响应。如图9所示,60°扭曲角ATN调制器912和70°扭曲角ATN调制器914两者的转换时间预计显示出一些温度依赖性,而这两个实施例预计在20℃到45℃之间的温度范围内,可达到小于50微秒的转换时间,最好小于35微秒。
按照本发明一个实施例,以上描述的ATN调制器可用于光通信系统。在图10所描述的简图中,光网络可利用以上描述的调制器作为选择例如在信号源1016和目的地1018之间的路径的1014a、1014b的光路由转换器的一部分。通过提供具有相对高的消光比的调制器,可在用于光网络的转换组件1012中实现适当的信噪比。通过提供也达到了相对高的转换速率的调制器,允许控制器1022响应一条路径的中断(如光纤被切断)快速重构光路由转换器1012,使从源1016到目的地1018提供基本上不间断的服务成为可能。
根据以上描述,可以看到本发明的许多优越性。通过利用扭曲向列液晶结构,本发明提供了一种有用且合理的混合模拟/数字电光调制器。本发明提供了ATN电光调制器,其可同时提供高的消光比(如大于-25dB)和快速转换(如小于50微秒转换)。这种同时达到高的消光比和快速转换速度,相信对显示装置无太大益处,而对于光通信具有很多优越性,例如对于光纤或其它光通信网络中的用于光路由转换器的光调制器。
本发明的很多变化和修改也可使用。虽然液晶和偏振材料的举例可用于本发明所描述的范围内,其它材料也可使用。虽然本发明所描述的为光路由转换器,按照本发明的ATN装置也可应用于其它,例如显示装置和高速空间光调制器(SLM)。一般地讲,60°扭曲实施例比70°扭曲实施例具有更快速的转换时间,如图9所示,而70°扭曲实施例具有的消光比比60°扭曲实施例大大约5dB。
虽然通过优选实施例和适当的变化和修改描述了本发明,但其它变化和调整也可应用,本发明的范围通过所附权利要求书确定。
Claims (30)
1.一种扭曲向列液晶电光调制器,包括:
第一和第二空间分开的晶胞壁(cell wall);
液晶材料,位于所述第一和第二空间分开的晶胞壁之间;
电极,用于对所述液晶材料施加电势;
其中所述第一和第二晶胞壁构成为分别定义第一和第二液晶指向矢方向,所述第一和第二方向之间偏移定义为扭曲角的角度,其中所述扭曲角大于0度而小于90度。
2.如权利要求1所述的调制器,其中所述扭曲角在约50度与约80度之间。

在所述液晶材料上施加电势,以在小于约50微秒的转换时间内转换到一个状态,此状态中,所述光的传送基本上被阻止,以相对于所述第一输出光强度,提供至少为约-25dB的消光比。
20.如权利要求19所述的方法,其中所述转换时间小于约35微秒。
21.如权利要求19所述的方法,其中所述消光比至少为约-30dB。
22.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中所述扭曲角在约50度与约80度之间。
23.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中所述扭曲角在约60度与约70度之间。
24.如权利要求1所述的方法,还包括分别定位入射和出射偏振器来定义入射和出射偏振方向。
25.如权利要求24所述的方法,其中所述入射和出射偏振方向基本上是平行的。
26.如权利要求24所述的方法,其中所述入射和出射偏振方向基本上是正交的。
27.如权利要求24所述的方法,还包括定位所述入射液晶指向矢,以使所述入射偏振器的所述偏振方向和所述第一液晶指向矢方向之间偏移定义为β角的角度量,其中所述β角在约5度与约20度之间。
28.如权利要求25所述的方法,其中所述β角在约13度与约15度之间。
29.如权利要求24所述的方法,还包括定位所述入射液晶指向矢以使所述入射偏振器的所述偏振方向和所述第一液晶指向矢方向之间偏移的角度量约为90度与所述扭曲角之差的一半。
30.如权利要求4所述的调制器,其中所述入射偏振器的所述偏振方向与所述第一液晶指向矢方向之间偏移的角度量约为90度与所述扭曲角之差的一半。
