背景技术
一些具有广布的站点和场所的较大组织使用虚拟专用网络(VPNs)作为一种用于他们内部组织电话通信的传统长途服务的一种替代。虽然虚拟专用网络建立在公共交换电话系统中,但它们提供一个出自用户预期专用的通信系统。
参考图1,显示了一个简化的虚拟专用网络框图。一个内部电话系统包括多个电话11,它们可操作地连接到一个专用分支交换机(PBX)13。正如本领域的技术人员所熟知的,几个或甚至数百部的电话以可操作的方式连接到PBX13。

在图1的实施例中,位于例如加利福尼亚的特定区域中,电话11的一个用户想要对电话15进行一次VPN呼叫,电话15位于本组织在,例如纽约的一个站点。在纽约站点的电话15以可操作的方式连接到服务此站点的PBX17。为了便于说明,与电话15相联的VPN号码是555-1234。为启动呼叫,用户将电话11摘机并接收一个来自PBX13的拨号音。用户输入“8”将此呼叫标识为一个VPN呼叫并接收另一个拨号音。随后,用户输入数字555-1234。PBX13通过直接存取线路(DAL23)将此呼叫转发给公共交换电话网络(PSTN)21的交换机19。交换机19在PSTN21中由唯一的初始交换标识符(OSID)标识。DAL23由初始交换组(OTG)标识符标识。当交换机19接收到在DAL23上拨打的数字时,它必须参考一个服务控制点(SCP)25用于路由指示。SCP25使用OSID和OTG来确定VPN客户的身份并基于客户标识符和拨号号码给交换机19提供路由指示。交换机19通过PSTN21给适当的终端交换机27传送呼叫。交换机27以可操作的方式连接到PBX17以完成对电话15的呼叫。
VPN服务的一个问题是公共交换电话系统不能可靠的延伸到世界的所有地方。由于在世界某些地方PSTN的不可靠性,特别是组织所在的地方,那些位于发展中国家的地方,不能使用VPN服务。
最近,组织已经开始建立并使用分组交换数据网,如用于危机通信任务的专用内部网和因特网自身。甚至在不能可靠访问公共交换电话系统的地域,为了在区域之间传输数据和例如e-mail的电子通信,组织已经建立并访问坚固的高速数据网络。
发明概述

本发明提供一个包括一个因特网协议(IP)网络和一个公共交换电话网络(PSTN)的虚拟专用网络(VPN)。一个出口(egress)企业网关以可操作的方式连接到IP网络。出口企业网关通过直接存取线路(DAL)以可操作的方式连接到PSTN的交换机。用于虚拟专用网络呼叫的建立信号及其呼叫本身通过DAL经IP网络和PSTN传输。在IP网络中的一个智能层具有将IP网络初始呼叫发送给一个传统PSTN DAL的能力。

详述
现在参考图2,按照本发明的一个VPN通常由数字31表示。VPN31的一部分在传统的PSTN环境中实现。网络31的PSTN部分包括一个由SCP35服务的交换机33。交换机33以可操作的方式连接到PSTN37,PSTN37依次以可操作的方式连接到交换机39。交换机39通过DAL45在组织的一个场所以可操作的方式连接到PBX41。PBX41以可操作的方式连接到多个电话,图中仅显示了一个电话43。
按照本发明,VPN31的一部分也在IP网络环境中实现。VPN31的IP网络环境包括一个通常由数字47表示的IP网络。IP网络47包括一个专用内部网,因特网,或专用内部网和因特网的组合。IP网络47提供传统因特网和基于Web的服务以及IP电话服务。
一个本地组织的电话系统包括一个PBX51和多个电话,图中仅显示了一个电话53。电话53以正常的方式操作。用户可在PBX51中使用电话53呼叫其它电话分机。PBX51还可提供一部带外线的电话53,通过它用户可进行本地和长途呼叫。
按照本发明,用户可使用电话53和PBX51进行VPN呼叫。PBX51以可操作的方式连接到一个进口企业网关(EG)55。尽管网关55被标为“进口”EG,但它是一个双向EG而标签“进口”仅用于识别相对于从电话53到电话43的呼叫流。参考图3,EG55包括一个信号网关57和一个媒质网关59。信号网关57将来自电话信号协议的例如SS7ISDN的双向协议翻译,或者依赖于PBX51使用的信号协议的信道关联协议(CAS)提供给例如会话初始协议(SIP)或者H.323的因特网电话信号协议。本发明的首选实施例基于SIP信号协议。然而,其它实施例基于例如H.323的其它协议而预期。媒介网关59提供在传统电话时分多路复用语音线路之间的双向协议翻译到例如实时传输协议(RTP)的IP传输协议。在ISDN或SS7信号的情况下,信号网关57通过SS7信号链接或ISDN D-信道的信号链接连接到PBX59。在CAS信号的情况下,信号网关57从媒介网关59接收信号信息。
SIP和RTP包经过IP网络47传输给出口企业网关EG61。虽然网关55被标为“进口”EG,但它是一个双向EG并且标签“进口”只用于识别相对于从电话53到电话43的呼叫流。EG61包括一个信号网关63和一个媒介网关65。信号网关63和媒介网关65按照分别以信号网关57和媒介网关59描述的方式执行双向协议解释。再参考图2,EG61通过DAL23连接到PSTN的交换机33。

在优选实施例中,SIP URLs是“telephone_number@gateway”的形式。这样,EG55标识为xyzmalaysia.com而EG61标识在xyzus.com。SIP邀请信息经过IP网络传47输给EG61。EG61执行协议翻译并通过DAL23给交换机33发送用于VPN号码777-4321的建立消息。交换机33识别该呼叫作为一个VPN呼叫并考虑SCP35用于路由选择指令。SCP35使用拨打的数字,交换机33的OSID,和DAL23的OTG来给交换机33提供路由选择指令。基于从SCP35接收的指令,用正常电话信号建立从PSTN37到电话43的呼叫。在呼叫建立期间,出口企业网关61通过IP网络47将IP电话信号传回给进口企业网关55。

Claims (17)

1.一个虚拟专用网络,包括:
一个因特网协议网络;
一个以可操作的方式连接到所述因特网协议网络的企业网关;
一个以可操作的方式连接到所述网关的直接存取线路;以及
一个以可操作的方式连接到所述直接存取线路的公共交换电话网络的交换机。
2.如在权利要求1中所述的虚拟专用网络,其中所述网关包括:
一个信号网关;以及
一个媒介网关。
3.如在权利要求2中所述的虚拟专用网络,其中所述信号网关包括用于将因特网协议呼叫建立消息转换为电话呼叫建立消息的设备。
4.如在权利要求2中所述的虚拟专用网络,其中所述信号网关包括用于将因特网会话初始协议信息转换为电话呼叫建立消息的设备。
5.如在权利要求1中所述的虚拟专用网络,包括:
一个以可操作的方式连接到所述因特网协议网络的第二企业网关;以及
一个以可操作的方式连接到所述第二网关的初始公共分支交换机。
6.如在权利要求5中所述的虚拟专用网络,其中所述第二网关包括:

一个媒介网关。

10.一种提供虚拟专用网络服务的方法,包括步骤:
通过一个因特网协议网络传输一个被呼叫方号码给一个企业网关;以及
将被叫方号码通过直接存取线路从所述网关传输给公共交换电话网络的一个交换机。
11.如在权利要求10中所述的方法,其中所述公共交换电话网络交换机由一个初始交换ID(OSID)定义。
12.如在权利要求11中所述的方法,其中所述直接存取线路由初始主干组(OTG)定义符定义。
