Powder lacquers and powder slurries contain effect pigment(s) with wide particle size distribution. Independent claims are also included for: (1) effect-giving multicoat lacquering with a combination effect coat, which can be produced by applying the powder slurry to an electrophoretic lacquer coat after thermal cure or wet-on-wet after no or partial cure, followed by physical or thermal cure and/or cure with actinic radiation; and (2) effect-giving multicoat lacquering with a base coat, which can be produced by applying a filler to an electrophoretic lacquer coat after thermal cure or wet-on-wet after no or partial cure, followed by thermal cure and/or cure with actinic radiation, applying a powder lacquer or powder slurry to the filler lacquer or antichip primer and airing or drying this without complete cure or subjecting it to physical or thermal cure and/or cure with actinic radiation, giving the base coat, applying clear coat(s) to the powder lacquer or powder slurry coat or the base coat, followed by thermal cure and/or cure with actinic radiation.

Description

The present invention relates to novel powder coatings and powder coating dispersions (Powder slurries) containing effect pigments. Furthermore, the present invention relates Invention, the use of the new powder coatings and powder slurries in the Automobackackierung, the painting of buildings in the interior and exterior, the Painting of furniture, doors and windows and industrial painting, including Coil Coating and Container Coating.

Color and / or effect paint finishes of motor vehicle bodies, in particular Car bodies, today preferably consist of several layers of paint, the be applied one above the other and have different properties.

For example, one after the other an electrically deposited electrocoating (ETL) as a primer, a primer coat or antiscratch primer, a Basecoat and a clearcoat applied to a substrate. This serves the ETL in particular the corrosion protection of the sheet. It is frequently used by experts also referred to as a primer. The primer coat is used to cover Unevenness of the ground and grant due to their elasticity the Chip resistance. If necessary, the surfacer coat can still be used for reinforcement the hiding power and to deepen the color of the paint. The Basecoating adds color and / or visual effects. The clearcoat It enhances the visual effects and protects the paintwork mechanical and chemical damage. Basecoat and clearcoat often referred to collectively as topcoat. In addition, it will still open Rompp Lexikon Lacke und Druckfarben, Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart, New York, 1998, pages 49 and 51, "Automotive Coatings" referenced.

It is therefore an important goal of modern automotive painting, the amount of in the Significantly reduce the amount of organic solvents released if not zero. Corresponding lacquers, such as ETL, aqueous fillers or  aqueous clearcoats, powder coatings or powder slurry clearcoats are available. However, the disadvantage is still that for the basecoat still non-aqueous, d. H. Conventional, basecoats or aqueous basecoats with a comparatively high Proportion of organic solvents must be used to make the pigments stable to disperse and to ensure a good course of the applied layers.

In addition, in the joint application of the paints, in particular the Basecoats and clearcoats, as part of the production of a color and / or effect Paint their properties are very finely tuned to each other For example, a collapse of the uncured layers in the application of Wet-on-wet process to avoid and / or cracking, the formation of cookers and / or to prevent the delamination of layers.

It would therefore be desirable to use the customary and known basecoats and Water-based paints by solvent-free powder coatings and powder slurries, the effect pigments (see Rompp Lexikon Lacke and printing inks, Georg Thieme Verlag, 1998, pages 176, "Effect pigments" and pages 380 and 381 "Metal oxide mica pigments" to "Metal pigments") included to replace. Initial approaches to this are already in place.

Coatings' partner, The magazine of BASF, for example, is using powder coatings Special, 1/2000, pages 4 to 6, or the company brochure of BASF Coatings AG "Powder coatings, powder coatings for industrial applications", January 2000, pigmented Powder coatings forth, which are also suitable as basecoats.

Furthermore, Japanese Patent Application JP 53 109 540 A1 (Derwent Unit 78800A / 44) a coating with a 10 to 45 microns thick base coat, prepared from an unspecified pigmented powder slurry and a 30 to 70 μm thick clearcoat.

German laid-open specification DE 27 10 421 A1 discloses a metallic effect pigment containing powder slurry based on amineutralized acrylate copolymers and  Melamine resins or known from polyesters and epoxy resins. The production of However, pigmented powder slurries requires the neutralization of the water-soluble Aminneutralisierten starting products with hydrochloric acid. This can but the Metal effect pigments sustainably damaged. The known powder slurry provides smooth, shiny, metallic coatings. It is not known if they are for the Production of effect-imparting multicoat paint systems is suitable.

From the Japanese patent application JP 02 014 776 A2 is a multi-layer coating from basecoat and clearcoat known, the basecoat from a pigmented powder slurry based on hydroxy group-containing acrylate copolymers and blocked polyisocyanates.

From US Pat. No. 5,379,947 A1, cosolvent-free pigmented are known and unpigmented powder slurries based on, for example hydroxyl-containing acrylate copolymers and blocked polyisocyanates or Glycidylgruppenhaltigen acrylate copolymers and dodecanedioic acid known.

Furthermore, from US Pat. No. 4,268,542 A1 comparable, Effect pigments containing powder coatings and powder slurries known.

However, the known pigmented powder coatings and powder slurries lead to it Metallic effects and / or optical effects that meet the high demands of Automotive OEM painting, especially in the upper class, not yet fair which is why the powder coatings and powder slurries are not yet Basecoats have enforced. In particular, they show with the help of the known Pigmented powder coatings and powder slurries produced effect coatings Light / dark shades (clouds), especially in a high-priced product how to convey the overall impression of a lesser quality to a luxury class car.

The object of the present invention is to effect pigments containing new powder coatings and powder slurries that no longer have the disadvantages of the prior art  but the effect in their use as basecoats Multicoat paint systems with metallic effects and / or dichroic effects that provide also the high demands of the automobile manufacturers and the customers in the segment of the Suffice upper class. In addition, the new powder slurries no decomposition and Hydrogen evolution during storage show more.

Accordingly, the new powder coatings and powder coating dispersions (powder slurries), containing at least one effect pigment having a broad particle size distribution, which hereinafter referred to as "powder coatings according to the invention and powder slurries".

Other inventive objects will be apparent from the description.

In view of the prior art, it was surprising and not for the expert predictable that the powder slurries and powder coatings according to the invention, the production effect multicoat paint systems that meet the high demands of the Market, with the particularly uniform distribution of effect pigments in the Matrix of the paint job surprised. Since the state of the art endeavors, effect pigments a very narrow particle size distribution, d. H. a grain size as uniform as possible, to use, the expert would have just expected the opposite.

It was even more surprising that the powder slurries according to the invention were suitable for the production allow so-called combination effect layers in the effect Multicoat paint both the function of surfacer and Stone impact protection primers as well as basecoats. This is about more surprising than on the one hand the powder slurries always for the production of Lacquer layers are proposed with essentially only one function and for others the usual and well-known surfacer and basecoats from Coating materials are produced, which are very different and very different are specially adapted to their intended use.

In the context of the present invention, the term "effect-giving Multilayer varnishing "both achromatic (see also Rompp Lexikon Lacke and Printing inks, Georg Thieme Verlag, 1998, page 590, "Unbuntpunkt") as well as colorful, d. H. colored multicoat paint systems.

The powder slurry according to the invention contains at least one finely divided dimensionally stable component, d. H. a powder coating according to the invention, as a disperse Phase and an aqueous medium as a continuous phase.

The finely divided dimensionally stable constituent or the powder coating according to the invention can be firm and / or highly viscous. In the context of the present invention means "highly viscous", that the particles under the usual and known conditions of Production, storage and use of powder slurries or powder coatings in the essentially behave like solid particles. Preferably, the powder coating is solid.

The individual particles of the finely divided component or the powder coating are also dimensionally stable. In the context of the present invention, "dimensionally stable" means that the particles under the usual and known conditions of storage and the Application of powder slurries and powder coatings, if at all, only slightly agglomerate and / or disintegrate into smaller particles, but also under the influence essentially preserve their original shape from shear forces.

Preferably, the solids content of the powder slurry according to the invention is from 10 to 80, preferably 15 to 75, more preferably 20 to 70, most preferably 25 to 70 and in particular 30 to 65 wt .-%, each based on the inventive Powder slurry.

In the powder coating of the invention, the solids content is naturally at 100 wt .-%.

Preferably, the mean particle size of the finely divided dimensionally stable Constituents of the powder slurry according to the invention at 0.8 to 40 μm, preferably 0.8 to 20 μm, and more preferably at 2 to 6 microns. Under average particle size is after understood the laser diffraction method determined 50% median value, d. h., 50% of the particles have a particle diameter ≦ the median value and 50% of the particles one Particle diameter ≧ the median value. Generally, the particle size of the the dimensionally stable components then distributed their upper limit when the Due to their size, particles can no longer run completely when burned in and thus the film history is negatively affected. The upper limit is 40 microns for makes sense, since from this particle size with a clogging of the purge channels of the highly sensitive application equipment is to be expected.

Pigmented powder slurries having such average particle sizes have a better Application behavior and show at the applied film thicknesses of <30 microns, as they currently practiced in the automotive industry in the Erstlackierung of automobiles be surprisingly a much lower propensity to cookers and the "mudcracking" as conventional combinations of filler, basecoat and clearcoat on.

The particle size distribution of the powder coatings according to the invention can be comparatively wide vary and depends on the intended use. Preferably, the Grain size distribution comparatively narrow with a very small proportion of coarse grain (Grain sizes above 95 microns) and on ultrafine grain (particle sizes below 5.0 microns). Especially Powder coatings are preferred with those in the European patent application EP 0 666 779 A1 applied grain size distribution applied.

Surprisingly, the powder coatings according to the invention essentially exhibit the same advantages as listed above in the powder slurries invention become.

The powder slurry according to the invention and the powder coating according to the invention are preferably free from organic solvents (cosolvents). In the context of the present  This invention means that it has a residual content of volatile solvents of < 2.0 wt .-%, preferably <1.5 wt .-% and particularly preferably <1.0 wt .-% have. According to the invention, it is of very particular advantage if the residual content below the Gas chromatographic detection limit is.

The invention essential ingredient of the powder coatings of the invention and Powder slurries is at least one effect pigment with a broad particle size distribution or Particle size distribution.

Römpp Lexikon Lacke und Druckfarben, Georg Thieme Verlag, 1998, Seite 521 "Sichtanalayse").The determination is carried out as described above by the laser diffraction method (see Rompp Lexikon Lacke and printing inks, Georg Thieme Verlag, 1998, page 349, "Laser diffraction"), through sieve analysis (see Rompp Lexikon Lacke and Druckfarben, Georg Thieme Verlag, 1998, page 521, "sieve analysis") according to DIN 66165-1 or -2: 1987- 04 or DIN 66160: 1990-02, by the sedimentation analysis according to DIN 66115-2: 1983- 02 using the pipette method or the Sedigraphen or by visual analysis DIN 66118: 1984-04 (see Rompp Lexikon Lacke and printing inks, Georg Thieme Verlag, 1998, page 521 "Visual Analysis").

In the context of the present invention, the term "broad particle size distribution" indicates that the effect pigment in question is a comparatively large amount Fine grain, d. H. Pigment particles of a particle size in the range of 1 to 10 microns, and a comparatively large amount of coarse grain having a grain size in the range of 70 to 90 microns having. This results in a particularly flat slope of the cumulative Grading curve.

The maximum grain size is preferably 90, preferably 80, more preferably at 70, most preferably at 60 and especially at 50 microns. The middle Particle size as defined above is preferably 20 to 60, preferably 22  to 58, more preferably from 24 to 56, most preferably from 26 to 54 and especially at 28 to 52 microns.

The powder coatings and powder slurries according to the invention can be physically or thermally and / or be curable with actinic radiation. The thermally curable In turn, powder coatings and powder slurries can be self-crosslinking or externally crosslinking his.

In the context of the present invention, the term "physical curing" means Curing a layer of a coating material by filming Solvent delivery from the coating material, the link within the Coating via looping of the polymer molecules of the binder (to the Term cf. Römpp Lexikon Lacke and Druckfarben, Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart, New York, 1998, "Binders," pages 73 and 74). Or the filming takes place via the coalescence of binder particles (see Rompp Lexikon Lacke and Printing inks, Georg Thieme publishing house, Stuttgart, New York, 1998, "hardening", pages 274 and 275). Usually, no crosslinking agents are necessary for this purpose. If necessary, can the physical hardening by atmospheric oxygen, heat or by irradiation with actinic radiation are supported.

In the context of the present invention, the term "self-crosslinking" denotes the Property of a binder to engage in self-crosslinking reactions. The prerequisite for this is that in the binders already both types of complementary reactive functional groups containing, which are suitable for crosslinking necessary. On the other hand, such coating materials as externally crosslinking are Adhesives and sealants referred to, in which one type of complementary  reactive functional groups in the binder, and the other kind in a hardener or crosslinking agent. Complementing this is on Römpp Lexikon Lacke and Printing inks, Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart, New York, 1998, "Hardening", pages 274 to 276, in particular page 275, below, referenced.

In the context of the present invention is under actinic radiation electromagnetic Radiation, such as near infrared (NIR), visible light, UV radiation or X-radiation, in particular UV radiation, and corpuscular radiation such To understand electron radiation.

"Dual-Cure-Pulverslurry".Are the thermal and the curing with actinic light in a powder coating applied together, this is also called "dual cure" and "dual-cure powder coating" or "dual-cure powder slurry".

Die Bindemittel sind oligomere und polymere Harze. The binders are oligomeric and polymeric resins.

The binders of the dual-cure powder coatings and powder slurries of the invention furthermore contain on statistical average at least one, preferably at least two, group (s) having at least one bond activatable with actinic radiation (s) per molecule.

In the context of the present invention is under a with actinic radiation activable bond understood a bond that upon irradiation with actinic Radiation becomes reactive and with other activated bonds of its kind Polymerization reactions and / or crosslinking reactions, which after radical and / or ionic mechanisms. Examples of suitable bonds are Carbon-hydrogen single bonds or carbon-carbon, carbon Oxygen, carbon-nitrogen, carbon-phosphorus or carbon-silicon Single bonds or double bonds. Of these, the carbon-carbon Double bonds are particularly advantageous and therefore according to the invention completely  particularly preferably used. For the sake of brevity, they will be referred to as "Double bonds".

Accordingly, the preferred group according to the invention contains one double bond or two, three or four double bonds. If more than one double bond is used, then the double bonds be conjugated. According to the invention, however, it is advantageous if the Isolated double bonds, in particular each terminally, in the here in question standing group. According to the invention, it is particularly advantageous two, in particular to use a double bond.

The dual-cure binder contains on average at least one of the above described activatable with actinic radiation groups. This means that the Functionality of the binder in this regard integer, d. h., for example, the same is two, three, four, five or more, or not integer, d. h., for example equal to 2.1 to 10.5 or more. Which functionality one chooses, depends on the Requirements that are placed on the respective pigmented dual-cure powder slurry.

Become on statistical average more than one activatable with actinic radiation group applied per molecule, the groups are structurally different from each other or from same structure.

If they are structurally different from each other, this means within the scope of the present invention Invention, that two, three, four or more, but especially two, with actinischer Radiation activatable groups can be used ranging from two, three, four or more, but especially two, derive monomer classes.

Examples of suitable groups are (meth) acrylate, ethacrylate, crotonate, cinnamate, Vinyl ether, vinyl ester, dicyclopentadienyl, norbornenyl, isoprenyl, isopropenyl, Allyl or butenyl groups; Dicyclopentadienyl, norbornenyl, isoprenyl, isopropenyl, Allyl or butenyl ether groups or dicyclopentadienyl, norbornenyl, isoprenyl, Isopropenyl, allyl or butenyl ester groups, but especially acrylate groups.

Preferably, the groups are via urethane, urea, allophanate, ester, ether and / or amide groups, but in particular via ester groups, to the respective Basic structures of the binder bound. This is usually done by conventional and known polymer-analogous reactions such as the reaction of pendant ones Glycidyl groups with the above-described olefinically unsaturated monomers, which contain an acid group of pendant hydroxyl groups with the Halides of these monomers, of hydroxyl groups containing double bonds Isocyanates such as vinyl isocyanate, methacryloyl isocyanate and / or 1- (1-isocyanato-1) methylethyl) -3- (1-methylethenyl) benzene (TMI® from CYTEC) or from Isocanatgruppen with the hydroxyl-containing monomers described above.

In the dual-cure powder coatings, however, mixtures of purely thermal hardenable and purely actinic radiation curable binders are applied. The pure with actinic radiation curable powder coatings of the invention and Powder slurries preferably contain binders which are purely curable with actinic radiation, preferably only those described above, with actinic radiation contain activatable groups.

In general, the coating materials to be used according to the invention are used in one Wet layer thickness applied, that after their curing coatings with the for their  Functions necessary and advantageous layer thicknesses result. In case of Electrocoating they are 5 to 40, preferably 10 to 35, especially preferably 12 to 30 and in particular 15 to 25 μm, in the case of the surfacer coating, Rockfall protection primer or functional layer they are 10 to 60, preferably 12 to 55, more preferably 15 to 50 and in particular 18 to 45 microns, in the case of Basecoat they are from 5 to 50, preferably 5 to 40, more preferably 5 to 30 and especially 10 to 25 microns, and in the case of a clearcoat, they are at 10 to 100, preferably 15 to 80, more preferably 20 to 75 and especially 25 to 70 microns. However, in the multi-layer coating according to the invention, the functional layer can only a layer thickness of 20 to 50% of the total layer thickness of functional layer and Have basecoat.

In addition, the powder slurries according to the invention also serve for the production the combination effect layers according to the invention.

In the context of the present invention, these are to be understood as coatings which are described in US Pat an effect-imparting multicoat paint system fulfills at least two functions. Functions of this kind are in particular the protection against corrosion, the adhesion mediation, the absorption of mechanical energy and the effects. According to the invention serves the Combination effect layer especially the absorption of mechanical energy and the Effects at the same time; So it fulfills the functions of a filler coat or Rockfall protection primer and a base coat. Preferably, the Combination effect layer also still anti-corrosion effect and / or adhesion-promoting effect.

The thickness of the combination effect layer is within a given The effect-imparting multicoat system according to the invention is preferably constant. In In some cases, however, it may be advisable to measure the thickness in the areas of the substrate, the less exposed to mechanical impact and / or less or even are not visible, thinner to save material.

Of course, the thickness of the combination effect layer of inventive effect-imparting multicoat system to inventive effect Multicoat paint can vary very widely. This is for the respective Individual case optimum thickness, in particular according to the hiding power of the used Pigments (see Rompp Lexikon Lacke and Druckfarben, Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart, New York, 1998, page 124, "Opacity"), the ability to generate mechanical energy absorb or dissipate, the ability to unevenness of the substrate surface compensate, and / or the other components of the powder slurry used in each case. The person skilled in the art can therefore determine the optimum thickness on the basis of his general expert knowledge if necessary. determine with the help of simple preliminary experiments. Preferably, the Thickness of the combination effect layer at 10 to 100, preferably 15 to 90, especially preferably 20 to 80, very particularly preferably 25 to 70 and in particular 30 to 60 μm, each based on the layer.

For the production of the erfindungsessential combination effect layer are after the inventive method the invention described above Powder slurries on the primed and ungrounded substrates described above applied.

Although the powder slurries according to the invention also come for the application outside Automobile painting, however, is their main technical Use in the said area, because here are their particular advantages completely to be particularly open-minded. The substrates are thus Motor vehicle bodies, in particular car bodies, and parts thereof, such as For example, doors, hoods, fenders, boot lid spoiler, sills or Wind deflector.

These consist in particular of steel or aluminum. The metal surfaces can have primers. In the case of aluminum, for example an oxide layer produced by anodic oxidation (Eloxal® method). in the Fall of steel is usually a cathodic deposited and  thermally cured electrodeposition coating. But it can also be a cathodic deposited electrocoat film which does not cure thermally, but only dried or partially cured.

The electrocoating or electrodeposition coating is then combined with the Overlaid powder slurry according to the invention, either alone or is cured together with the electrodeposition coating layer (wet-in-wet process).

The resulting combination effect layer according to the invention can be combined with at least one additional paint coating. Preferably, these are at least one of the above-described clearcoats. This results particularly advantageous effect-imparting multicoat paint systems according to the invention an excellent overall appearance and a particularly high Scratch resistance.

When coating the combination effect layer with a clearcoat, the cured combination effect layer with at least one clearcoat be covered, after which it is cured by itself.

In a second variant, which is preferred according to the invention, which can not or only partially cured pigmented powder slurry layer directly with at least one Clear coat layer are coated, after which the clear coat (s) together with the hardened pigmented powder slurry layer and optionally the electrodeposition coating layer becomes (wet-in-wet method).

The powder slurries according to the invention can be mixed with those from liquid paint technology apply known methods. In particular, they can by means of spraying be applied. Preferably, they are by electrostatic painting of Body exterior parts, followed by pneumatic spraying (compressed air spraying) Interior body parts applied.

In this case, the electrostatic coating by means of an electrostatic spray gap, an electrostatic spray bell or an electrostatic spray disc.

Furthermore, the electrostatic coating can be assisted by electrostatics mechanical atomization done. Preferably, this is done with the help of electrostatic high rotation disks or high rotation bells performed.

Even the pneumatic spraying or air pressure painting has no methodical Special features on but can be done by hand or with the help of usual and familiar Vending machines or robots are performed.

The application is preferably when illuminated with visible light of a wavelength of over 550 microns or under exclusion of light when the pigmented Powder slurries are curable thermally and with actinic radiation. This will be a Substantial change or damage to be used according to the invention Coating material and overspray avoided.

Of course, these application methods also in the application additional lacquer layers, preferably clear lacquer layers, are used, provided that it not to powder coatings, in particular to powder clearcoats and / or the Powder coatings of the invention, which are preferably according to the in the product Information of the company BASF Lacke + colors AG, "powder coatings", 1990 or the Company brochure of BASF Coatings AG "Powder coatings, powder coatings for industrial Applications, "January 2000.

Physical hardening does not require any special measures be taken; However, the physical hardening by atmospheric oxygen, heat or by irradiation with actinic radiation.

The curing of the applied electrocoating layers, filler layers, Basecoat films, combination effect coatings and clearcoat films have none methodological features, but with the help of the usual and well-known Methods and devices.

The thermal curing can take place after a certain rest period or ventilation time. you may have a duration of 30 seconds to 2 hours, preferably 1 minute to 1 hour and especially 1 minute to 45 min. The rest period is used, for example, for the course and the degassing of Layers and to the evaporation of volatile components such as possibly existing solvent and / or water. The ventilation can be increased by a Temperature that is not sufficient for curing, and / or by a reduced Humidity can be accelerated.

Vorteilhafterweise erfolgt die thermische Härtung bei Temperaturen von 100 bis 180°C.The thermal curing is carried out for example by heating in a convection oven or Irradiation with IR and / or NIR lamps. As with curing with actinic radiation The thermal curing can also be carried out gradually. Advantageously, the thermal curing at temperatures of 100 to 180 ° C.

When curing with actinic radiation, preferably a dose of 1,000 to 3,000, preferably 1,100 to 2,900, particularly preferably 1,200 to 2,800, very particularly preferably 1,300 to 2,700 and in particular 1,400 to 2,600 mJ / cm 2 is used. Optionally, this cure can be supplemented with actinic radiation from other sources. In the case of electron beams, it is preferable to operate under an inert gas atmosphere. This can be ensured, for example, by supplying carbon dioxide and / or nitrogen directly to the surface of the powder slurry layer. Even in the case of curing with UV radiation, to avoid the formation of ozone, under inert gas can be used.

For curing with actinic radiation, the usual and known Radiation sources and optical aids applied. Examples of suitable Radiation sources are flash lamps from the company VISIT, mercury high- or low-pressure vapor lamps, which are optionally doped with lead to a Beam windows open up to 405 nm, or electron beam sources. Their arrangement is known in principle and can the conditions of the workpiece and the Process parameters are adjusted. For complicated shaped workpieces like them are intended for automotive bodies, the non-direct radiation accessible areas (shadow areas) such as cavities, folds and others Design-related undercuts with point, small area or Rundumstrahlern, associated with an automatic movement device for the Irradiation of cavities or edges, (partially) cured.

Die Anlagen und Bedingungen dieser Härtungsmethoden werden beispielsweise in R. Holmes, U.V. and E.B. Curing Formulations for Printing Inks, Coatings and Paints, SITA Technology, Academic Press, London, United Kindom 1984, beschrieben. The systems and conditions of these curing methods are described, for example, in R. Holmes, U.V. and E.B. Curing Formulations for Printing Inks, Coatings and Paints, SITA Technology, Academic Press, London, United Kindom 1984.

Here, the curing can be done in stages, d. H. through multiple exposure or Irradiation with actinic radiation. This can also be done alternately, d. h., that is cured alternately with UV radiation and electron radiation.

At Dual Cure can be thermal curing and curing with actinic radiation be applied simultaneously or in succession. Be the two curing methods used sequentially, for example, can be started with the thermal curing and be terminated with the curing with actinic radiation. In other cases it can be prove to be advantageous to begin with the curing with actinic radiation and hereby to end.

Die Dicke der Klarlackierung lag bei 50 µm.Steel panels (body panels), with a usual and well-known cathodic coated and baked electrodeposition coating were coated with the powder slurry manually coated using a conventional and known spray gun (Pressure: 5 bar, 2 spray holes, horizontal and vertical). The wet layer thickness was so chosen that after stoving a layer thickness of 40 microns resulted. The  Powder slurry layer were flashed for 10 min at 50 ° C and with a commercial conventional two-component clearcoat from BASF Coatings AG overlayed. The resulting clearcoat was flashed off for 10 minutes, after which the powder slurry layer and the clearcoat are baked at 150 ° C. for 30 minutes were. The thickness of the clearcoat was 50 μm.

The resulting paint had excellent hiding power. you Metallic effect and flip-flop fully corresponded to those of a corresponding pigmented basecoat. The adhesion to the primer and the Intercoat adhesion as well as the stone impact protection effect were also after the Weathering in the Schwitzwasserkonstantklima (SKK) very good. Disturbances in the course, Cooker, cracking (mudcracking) or surface structures such as orange peel skin were not observable.
