Es ist bekannt, daß man beim Umsatz von Phenolaten mit Halogencyan trimere Produkte erhält, vorwiegend
Triazinderivate, die über die auch als Reaktionsprodukt faßbaren Imidokohlensäurephenylester
entstehen (vgl. Liebigs Ann. Chem., Bd. 287, S. 319, und Ber. dtsch. ehem. Ges., Bd. 28, S. 2467).
Setzt man in die Reaktion mit Halogencyan isolierte und getrocknete Metallsalze von gehinderten Phenolen
ein, d. h. Phenolen, die in beiden zur OH-Gruppe ortho-ständigen Stellungen sperrige Substituenten
tragen (z. B. 2,6-Di-tertiär-butylphenol, 2-Tert-butyl-6-cyclohexylphenol;
vgl. hierzu S tills on u.a., J. Amer. chem. Soc, 67 [1945], S. 303), so gelingt es
bei dieser sehr begrenzten Gruppe von Phenolen erstmals echte Cyansäureester der Gruppierung
R — O — CN zu fassen, die bis dahin unbekannt waren (deutsche Patentschrift 1 079 650). Außer
dieser sehr begrenzten speziellen Art sind bisher keine aromatischen Cyansäureester beschrieben
worden.
Es wurde nun gefunden, daß man aromatische Cyansäureester durch Umsetzung von Phenolen mit
Halogencyaniden erhalten kann, wenn man gegebenenfalls mit einem heterocyclischen Rest verbundene

Halogencyan fest, flüssig oder gasförmig zugesetzt werden kann.
Bei der Verwendung von Chlorcyan wird die Umsetzung vorzugsweise unterhalb dessen Siedepunktes
2" (13° C) durchgeführt, bei der Verwendung von Bromcyan
können jedoch auch Temperaturen von über 500C Anwendung finden.
Als Phenole können Mono- und Polyphenyle eingesetzt werden, beispielsweise Phenol, Kresol, Xylenol,
Mono- oder Polyphenole, deren umzusetzende Hy- 25 Äthylphenol, Nitrophenole, Methoxyphenol, Phenoldroxygruppen
in ihren Orthostellungen jeweils hoch- carbonsäure, -ester, -amid, Phenolsulfonsäure, Acetylstens
einen sterisch hindernden Substituenten auf- aminophenol, Dimethylaminophenol, Chlorphenole,
weisen, mit Halogencyaniden und einem tertiären «-Naphthol, ß-Naphthol, Hydroxychinolin, Hydro-Amin
(Molverhältnis phenolische Hydroxygruppe zu chinon, Phloroglucin, Dihydroxynaphthaline, Tri-Halogencyanid
zu tertiärem Amin wie 1:1:1) in einem 30 hydroxynaphthaline, Hydroxyanthrachinon und
inerten organischen Medium bei Temperaturen unter- 4,4'-Dihydroxydiphenyldimethylmethan, Hydroxydi-
phenyläther.
Ein kleiner Überschuß von Halogencyan ist von Vorteil. Man kann das Phenol vorlegen und Halogen-35
cyan und die Base gleichzeitig eintragen, man kann auch Phenol und Halogencyan vorlegen und die Base
zutropfen. Nach beendeter Reaktion trennt man vom Aminhydrochlorid ab und gewinnt das Cyanat durch
Einengen des Lösungsmittels in großer Reinheit und deten Cyansäureester zur Iminokohlensäure usw. zu 40 guter Ausbeute. In den wenigen Fällen, wo das

Als Halogencyanide kommen das technisch leicht zu- flüssiges Chlorcyan unter starkem Rühren zugetropft,
gängliche Chlor- und Bromcyan in Frage, wobei das Gleichzeitig werden 51 g Triäthylamin so eingetropft,

Amin während der Umsetzung durch langsame Zugabe in molarem Unterschuß gegenüber dem verwendeten
Halogencyanid eingesetzt wird.
Bei dieser Art der Reaktion findet das aus dem Phenol durch die Aminzugabe gebildete Phenolat
immer überschüssiges Halogencyan vor und braucht nicht in einer Ausweichreaktion mit den bereits gebil-
daß es immer in leichtem Unterschuß gegen Chlorcyan ist. Nach beendeter Reaktion wird das ausgefallene
Triäthylaminhydrochlorid durch Absaugen abgetrennt und das Filtrat destilliert. Nach Abziehen des Tetrachlorkohlenstoffs
geht das Produkt bei 81 bis 82,5 0C/ 16 Torr über.
Ausbeute an Phenylcyanat: 42,5 g (=72% der
Theorie).
Analyse:
Berechnet... C 70,5, H 4,2, N 11,7, O 13,5% ; gefunden ... C 70,55, H 4,78, N 11,72, O 13,22%.
Das IR-Spektrum zeigt eine starke Bande bei 4,5 μ.
Analog Beispiel 1. Es wurde nur statt des Eintropfens von flüssigem Chlorcyan die gleiche Menge
gasförmiges Chlorcyan innerhalb einer Stunde bei Zimmertemperatur eingeblasen.
Ausbeute: 41 g (Z, = 70% der Theorie).
108 g p-Kresol werden in 250 ml Äther gelöst. Zwischen 0 und 100C werden nun 66 g Chlorcyan
und 102 g Triäthylamin langsam zugetropft (Triäthylamin im leichten Unterschuß gegen Chlorcyan halten).

und das ausgefallene Triäthylaminhydrochlorid abgesaugt. Vom Filtrat wird zunächst der Äther abgezogen,
dann das zurückbleibende Produkt destilliert. Kp. 87,5 bis 90°C/10Torr.
Ausbeute an 4-Methylphenylcyanat: 100 g (= 75%
der Theorie).
Das IR-Spektrum zeigt eine starke Bande bei 4,5 μ.
Zu 72 g «-Naphthol, gelöst in 250 ml Aceton, werden unter starkem Rühren 55 g Bromcyan bei
Zimmertemperatur in kleinen Portionen eingetragen. Gleichzeitig werden, wie im Beispiel 1 erläutert, 51 g
Triäthylamin eingetropft. Nach beendeter Reaktion wird V2 Stunde nachgerührt und dann vom Triäthylaminhydrobromid
abgesaugt und mit Aceton nachgewaschen. Vom Filtrat wird das Aceton im Vakuum abdestilliert. 82 g rohes «-Naphthylcyanat (= 96,5 %
der Theorie) bleiben zurück. Kp. 161°C/11 Torr.
Das destillierte reine Produkt kristallisiert durch.
Fp.: Sintern unter Trimerisation ab 450C.
Das IR-Spektrum zeigt eine starke Bande bei 4,5 μ.
cyanat (= 76 % der Theorie) als weiße Kristalle aus.
Fp. 108 bis 1100C.

Setzt man analog Beispiel 6 statt Hydrochinon 4,4'-Dihydroxydiphenyldimethylmethan ein, so erhält
man in gleicher Weise 4,4'-Dicyanatodiphenyldimethylmethan. Fp. 77 bis 8O0C.
Analyse:
Berechnet ... C 73,4, H 5,04, O 11,5, N 10,1 %; gefunden ... C 73,43, H 5,09, O 12,05, N 10,10%.
Das IR-Spektrum weist bei 4,5 μ eine starke Doppelbande auf.
Zu 61 g 2,4-Dimethylphenol, gelöst in 250 ml
Benzol, werden in der gleichen Weise wie im Beispiel 1 33 g Chlorcyan und 51 g Triäthylamin zugegeben.
Nach Nachrühren und Absaugen des ausgefallenen Triäthylaminhydrochlorids wird das Benzol im Vakuum
abgezogen und das Produkt destilliert. Kp. 75 bis 77°C/2 Torr.
Ausbeute an 2,4-Dimethylphenylcyanat 65 g (= 89 %
der Theorie).
IR-Spektrum zeigt starke Bande bei 4,5 μ.

Ein analog Beispiel 8 durchgeführter Versuch in Nitrobenzol ergab ein im IR-Spektrum identisches
Produkt.
Zu 75 g 2,6-Diäthylphenol, gelöst in 300 ml Aceton,
werden 33 g Chlorcyan und 72 g Tri-n-propylamin zugetropft. Nach Absaugen von Aminhydrochlorid
wird das Aceton im Vakuum abgezogen und das Produkt destilliert.
Kp. 86bis90°C/2,3Torr.
Ausbeute an 2,6-Diäthylphenylcyanat: 75 g (= 85 %
der Theorie).
Starke IR-Bande bei 4,5 μ.

Wie Beispiel 4. Statt «-Naphthol werden 72 g jS-Naphthol eingesetzt, statt Bromcyan 33 g Chlorcyan

110 g Hydrochinon werden in 500 ml Aceton weitgehend
gelöst. Dann werden bei O0C 135 g Chlorcyan in die Lösung eingegossen. Anschließend werden
210 g Triäthylamin so langsam zugetropft, daß die Temperatur unterhalb 100C bleibt. Nach beendeter
Zugabe wird 1I2 Stunde nachgerührt und vom Triäthylaminhydrochlorid
abgesaugt. Beim Einengen des acetonischen Filtrats fallen 122 g p-Phenylendi-Analog
Beispiel 10 entsteht aus 3,5-Dimethylphenol das 3,5-Dimethylphenylcyanat vom Kp. 81 bis 83 0C/
2 Torr. Starke IR-Bande bei 4,5 μ.
80 g 2,5-Dihydroxynaphthalin werden in 500 ml Aceton gelöst. Bei 00C gibt man 61 g Chlorcyan zu.
Nun werden unter Kühlung und Rühren 105 g Triäthylamin so eingetropft, daß die Temperatur nicht
über 13°C steigt. Produkt und Triäthylaminhydrochlorid
fallen aus. Das wasserunlösliche 2,5-Dicyanatonaphthalin wird durch Verrühren mit Wasser
von dem Triäthylaminhydrochlorid befreit.
90 g des 2,5-Dicyanatonaphthalins (= 76 % der
Theorie) werden als weißes Pulver erhalten.

mit 92% der Theorie Ausbeute das destillierte 4-(l,3,3-Trimethylpentyl)-phenylcyanat
vom Kp. 140°C/2Torr.
Claims (1)
- Patentanspruch:Verfahren zur Herstellung von aromatischen Cyansäureestern durch Umsetzung von Phenolen mit Halogencyaniden, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man gegebenenfalls mit einem heterocyclischen Rest verbundene Mono- oder Polyphenole, deren umzusetzende Hydroxygruppen in ihren Orthostellungen jeweils höchstens einen sterisch hindernden Substituenten aufweisen, mit Halogencyaniden und einem tertiären Amin (Molverhältnis phenolische Hydroxygruppe zu Halogencyanid zu tertiärem Amin wie 1:1:1) in einem inerten organischen Medium bei Temperaturen unterhalb 65° C umsetzt, wobei das verwendete tertiäre Amin während der Umsetzung durch langsame Zugabe in molarem Unterschuß gegenüber dem verwendeten Halogencyanid eingesetzt wird.509 598/412 6.65 © Bundesdrackerei Berlin
