der USA-Patentanmeldung Serial iüo. 750 589 in Anspruch genom
Gegenstand des Hauptpatents ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung
von chlorierten oder bromiertes aromatischen Verbindungen»
welches dadurch gekennzeichnet ist» dass aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe, halogeniert© aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe,
Carbonsäureester von aromatischen Hydroxyverbindungen oder Ester von aromatischen Carbonsäure? mit Eisen, Edelmetallen
oder Verbindungen solcher Metalle, ferner mit Nitrationen oder
Nitrationenbildnern und mit Chlorionen» Bromionen oder Perohio

Genäse dem Hauptpatent kann das Verfahren in Gegenwart

In der Beschreibung des Hauptpatents wird ausgeführt» dass die Chlorierung oder Bromieruhg von aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen
in bekannter Weise z.B. durchgeführt werden kann» indem man gasförmiges Chlor oder Brom unter geeigneten
Reaktionsbedingungen durch das Ausgangematerial leitet. Diese
Verfahren sind aber insofern ungünstig, als sich gleichzeitig mit 1 Hol halogeniert em aromatischem Kohlenwasserstoff auofc.
1 Hol unerwünschter Chlorwasserstoff oder Bromwasserstoff bildet, der im allgemeinen nicht verwendbar ist. Bei dem Verfahren nach Rasohig wird Chlorwasserstoff zum Chlorieren von Benzol verwendet; diese Oxychlorierung erfordert aber ein© Dampf·=

Nach dem Verfahren des Hauptpatents lässt eich die Kern-Chlorierung
oder Kernbromierung von aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen leicht mit guten limwandlungagraäen und hohen Ausbeuten
an dem gewünschten Produkt durchführen, ohne dass man in der
Dampfphase zu arbeiten braucht, und die aromatischen. Verbindungen lassen sich bei niedrigen Temperaturen halogenieren 5
wenn man sie zusagen mit den angegebenen Metallen oder Metallverbindungen, !Titrationen oder Hitrationenfeildnem und
Chlorionen, Bromionen oder Perchlorsäure erhitzt.
Bb wurde nun gefunden, dass man mit dem gleichen Erfolg
anstelle der im Hauptpatent angegebenen Metalle oder Metallverbindungen auch andere Hetalle oder Metallverbindungen verwendet,
kann, wenn man die umsetzung in Gegenwart eines ebenfalls in
Hauptpatent beschriebenen organischen Lösungsmittels durchführt.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von chlorierten oder bromierten aromatischen Verbindungen durch

Als Ausgangsstoffe kann man b@i dem erfindungegemäesen
Verfahren aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe, halogenierte
(chlorierte, bromierte, fluorierte oder kodierte) aromatische
Kohlenwasserstoffe oder Carbonsäureester von aromatischen Hydroxyverbindungen verwenden. Der Carboneäureteil solcher
Eeter kann von gerad- oder verzweigtkettigan Carboneäuren Bit
1 bis 40, vorzugsweise 2 bis 6 Kohlenstoffatomen abgeleitet

Beispiele für erfindungsgemäss als Ausgangegut yerwendbar*
aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe sind Benzol, Toluol, Xthylhen-BOl,
Cumol, Naphthalin, Anthraoen, Biphenyl, Phenanthren, tertoButylbenzol, a-Ehenylnaphthalin, p-Xylol, Polystyrol, Terphenyl,
3-Phenylheptan, 1,4-Diphenylbutan, Diphenylatthan,
Tetrahydronaphthalin, das Propyliumanion usw.
Um die gewünschte Umwandlung zu ersielen, müssen die aromatischen
Verbindungen und das Metall "bzw. die Me tall verbindung in Gegenwart von Nitrationen oder Nitrationenbildnern
miteinander umgesetzt werden«. Unter ':Nitrationenbildnern" sind
Verbindungen, Ionen oder Radilcale zu verstehen, die Stickstoff
und Sauerstoff enthalten und unter den Verfahrensbedingungen
duroh Ionisierung, Oxydation oder Disproportionierung in Nitrationen übergehen, wie z.B. Nitritionen, NO, NO2, NgO^,
N204' N2°5' N0C1» NOBr, NOgOl. In diesem Sinne kann man daher
auoh Salse, wie iTatriumnitrat, Oäsiuranitrat, Natriumnitrit
oder Kaliumnitr.it, verwenden.
Auaserdem muss das Reaktionsgemiach Chlorionen oder Bromionen
in ausreichenden Mengen enthalten, um die aromatische Verbindung zu halogenieren. Die Chlor- oder Bromionen können
zwar aus einer der erfindungsgemäss verwendeten Metallverbindungen
stammen; dies wird jedoch nicht bevorzugt. Zweokmässig
werden die Chlor- oder Bromionen in Form anderer Verbindungen zugesetzt, die in dem Reaktionegemisch unter Bildung von
Chlor- oder Broraionen dissoziieren, wie Chlorwasserstoff,
Bromwasserstoff{ Annnoniumehlorid, Ammoniumbromid, organischen
Chloriden oder Bromiden, wie Anilin-hydrochlorid, Methylaminhydrochlorid,
Benzyltrimethylammoniuitibroniid, oder metallischen
Chloriden oder Bromiden, wie Natriumchlorid, Kaliumbromid, Rubidiumohlorid,
Magnesiumbromid, Cuprichlorid5 Bariumohlorid,
Calciumchlorid oder Aluminiunbromid. Das Holverhältnis von
Chlor- oder Bromionen zu der aromatiechen Ausgangsverbindung

kann im Bereich von etwa 10:1 Ma 1s20 liegen und liegt vorzugsweise in Bereich von etwa 2:1 bis 1:2.
Vorzugsweise wird die Umsetzung in Gegenwart von Sauerstoff durchgeführt. In diesem Falle werden weniger Nitrationen
und weniger Metall oder Metallsalz benötigt, und das Verfahren läset sioh kontinuierlich durchführen., Das Molverhältnis von
Sauerstoff zu dem aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoff kann etwa 1000t1 bis 1:10 betragen und beträgt vorzugsweise etwa 1Oi1
bis 1i1. ·
Erfindungsgemäss werden die oben angegebenen Reaktioneteilnehmer zusammen mit einem organischen Lösungsmittel erhitzt» das den Verlauf der Umsetzung nicht beeinträchtigt und
weder mit den Reaktionsteilnehmern noch mit den Produkten reagiert. Beispiele für solohe Lösungsmittel sind Äther» Amide»
Sulfoxide» Ketone, wie m-Diozan, Dirnethylacetamid, Dimethylformamid, Dimethylsulfoxid und Aceton. Vorzugsweise verwendet
man jedoch als Lösungsmittel eine gerad- oder verzweigtkettige
Carbonsäure mit 1 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen, vorzugsweise mit 2 bis 6 Kohlenstoffatomen, für die Beispiele oben angegeben
sind.
Die Umsetzung gemäss der Erfindung wird einfach durchgeführt, indem man die angegebenen Stoffe unter bestimmten Bedingungen miteinander in Berührung bringt. Die Menge an Metall
oder Metallverbindung beträgt, bezogen auf das Metall, etwa 0,0001 bis 5 Molprozent, vorzugsweise etwa 0,01 bis 1 Molprozent. Das Molverhältnis von Nitrationen zu der aromatischen
Verbindung kann im Bereioh von etwa 1:1 bis 1:106 liegen und

Haoh beendeter Reaktion kann die chlorierte oder bromierte aromatische Verbindung auf beliebige Weise, s.B. duroh Destillation bei etwa 50 bis 200° 0 und Brücken von etwa 0,00007
bis 0,7 kg/on , gewonnen werden. Je naoh den Siedepunkten der
Produkte in dem Reaktionsgemisch gehen die einzelnen Bestandteile desselben einschliesslich der gewünsohten chlorierten
oder bromierten aromatischen Verbindungen einzeln über, so
dass sie sich leicht gewinnen lassenο
In der folgenden Versuchsreihe.werden Umsetzungen nit
Toluol bei 120° C unter einem Sauerstoffdruck von 11,9 atü in
Verlaufe von 4 Stunden durchgeführt. Man sieht, dass bei den
Versuchen, bei denen kein inertes Lösungsmittel, kein Katalysator oder weder inertes Lösungsmittel noch Katalysator anwesend sind, kaum eine Umsetzung oder überhaupt keine Umsetzung
stattfindet, während bei den Versuchen, die in Gegenwart
eines Inerten Lösungsmittels und eines Katalysators durchgeführt werden, ausgezeichnete Umwandlungsgrade der Reaktionsteilnehmer zu Chlortoluol erzielt werden.

Die folgende Versuchsreihe erläutert die verschiedenartigen
Metallverbindungen, die in dem Oxyohlorierungekatalyaator
genäse der Erfindung verwendet werden können.· Alle Versuche
werden im Verlaufe von 4 Srunden bei 120° C und einen Sauerstoff
druok von 11,9 atü durchgeführt. Das Reaktionsgemisoh,
das gut gerührt wird, enthält zu Anfang 10 Millimol Metallverbindung,
268 Millimol HOl, 303 Milliniol Toluol, 11,1 Millimol
Salpetersäure, 1990"Millimol Essigsäure und 928 Millimöl Wasser·

Es wurde gefunden« dass die Verbindungen der Metalle Kobalt» Oer, Vanadium und Mangan in Ansohluss an die Oxychlorierung zur Oxydation der Methylgruppe führen, wenn die als Ausgangsstoff eingesetzte aromatische Verbindung 1 bis 5 Alkylsubstituenten aufweist, bei denen an das dem aromatischen Ring
benachbarte Kohlenstoffatom mindestens ein Wasserstoffatom gebunden ist. So bildet sich z.B. aus Toluol zunächst Chlortoluolj wenn man aber die Umsetzung fortführt, geht das Chlortoluol in Chlorbenzoeaäure über. Dies wird durch die folgenden
Versuohe erläutert, die bei 120° C und einem Sauerstoffdruck
▼on 11,9 atti ait 270 Millimol HCl, 10 Millimol HNO3, 1990 Millimol Essigsäure und 303 Millimol Toluol durchgeführt werden.
Bei diesen Versuchen wird der Sauerstoffdruck im Reaktionsgefäse auf 11,9 atü gehalten, und der Sauerstoff wird aus einer
Bombe zugeführt, an der der Druckabfall beobaohtet wird. Für
eine vollständige Umwandlung zu Chlortoiuolen würde der Batterie
stoff-Druckabfall 42 kg/cm betragen. Wenn der Druckabfall höher als 42 kg/cm ist oder wenn er bei Bildung von wesentlich
weniger als 100 # der erwarteten Chlortoluole 42 kg/om beträgt, so bedeutet dies eine Oxydation der Methylgruppe.

Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass mindestens zwei Metalle oder Metallverbindungen verwendet werden, und «war einerseits Kobalt, Mangan, Vanadium, Cer oder Verbindungen derselben und andererseits Palladium, Kupfer oder Verbindungen derselben.10. Verfahren nach Anspruch 9, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass als erstes Metall bzw. erste Metallverbindung Mangan oder eine Manganverbindung vtrwendet wird.11.
