Abstract

The spectrometer has an ionisation chamber and a connected drift chamber, in which the ions move along a drift stretch, through an axial aligned electric field. An electrically switchable ion gate is arranged at the start of the drift stretch and an ion collector is arranged at the end of the drift stretch. Openings are provided in the walls of the drift chamber, in the region of the field lines of the electric field, for the removal of the carrier gas or for supplying a drift gas, which is modified in the same or the opposite direction as the movement of the ions flowing though the drift chamber. This avoids creating inhomogeneities of the electrical field of the conductivity of the resistance material of the wall (8) near the openings (10).

Description

The invention relates to an ion mobility spectrometer according to the preamble of claim 1.

Such an ion mobility spectrometer is also used for detection low proportions of substances to be analyzed in a carrier gas and usually consists of an ionization chamber, in the molecules of the substance to be analyzed and the carrier gases are ionized and a subsequent drift chamber, in which the ions are admitted through a switchable ion gate. Between this ion gate and an ion collector on the opposite lying end of the drift chamber is an axially directed elek tric field embossed. The molecules move in the field of the substance to be analyzed in the direction of the ion collector gate. The distance between the ion gate and the ion collector Called drift distance. The ion gate is in a certain Time pattern switched so that ions only in this time pattern in the drift chamber can be let in. The one on the ion collector the ions that strike cause a change in time changing current, after amplification and an analog / digital conversion is evaluated. A procedure for this is in DE-A1-195 15 270.

Conventional ion mobility spectrometers have a length that is in the range of 10 cm and a diameter in the cm range; see. the aforementioned DE-A1-195 15 270. In ion mobility spectro  The electrostatic field becomes meters of this magnitude generated by an arrangement of metal rings and electrodes, the openings from which the carrier gas is discharged or a Drift gas is introduced in the plane of the ion collector lie.

It is in the German patent application 196 50 612.3 of the applicant derin proposed the dimensions of such Ion mobility spectrometer further reduce that the drift chamber with the ion gate and the ion collector composed of individual parts, in particular silicon parts is, which according to the be from semiconductor technology known processes, in particular etching and micromilling be tested. As a result, the length of the drift chamber can be reduced to a few Centimeter and also the cross section are reduced and the Diameter can be reduced to typically 2 mm. In these Tues dimensions can be the openings for discharging the carrier gas or to supply a drift gas no longer in the ions Collector-receiving end wall of the drift chamber arranged as this will make the effective area of the ion collector reduced and thus the signal current would be extremely reduced. This opening or these openings are therefore on the circumference of the Outside wall of the drift chamber arranged in front of the ion collector.

Crucial for the measurement accuracy of an ion mobility spec trometer is the homogeneity of the electric field in the Drift chamber. According to the aforementioned DE-A1-195 15 270 that Field by an alternating arrangement of ring-shaped isolas gates and metal electrodes kept sufficiently homogeneous. At Ion mobility spectrometers with a smaller cross section this arrangement is insufficient. Then a sufficient homogeneity of the field, the wall of the drift came  mer at least partially from an electrical resistance mat rial, either by coating the wall of the Drift chamber or a corresponding resistance of the drift came walls can be reached by yourself.

Regardless of how this resistance structure is structured, the homogeneity of the electric field is disturbed if on Circumference of the drift chamber in front of the ion collector Carrier or drift gas are provided. Particularly sensitive is the fault with a small cross-section of the drift chamber.

The invention has for its object an ion mobility spectrometer of the type in question with openings for a Carrier or drift gas on the circumference of the drift chamber before the ion to create a collector whose field homogeneity is not essential is worse than without openings.

This object is according to the invention by the features of Claim 1 solved.

Accordingly, by appropriate modification of the electri conductivity of an opening for the carrier or Resistance material located drift gas an inhomogeneity of the electrical field can be substantially avoided. That has among other things, the advantage that the cross section of an ion mobile lity spectrometer can be further reduced because ver the entire end surface of the drift chamber as an ion collector can be turned and not through openings for removal or Feeding a gas is interrupted.

There are basically two types of modifications to the electri conductivity of the resistance material around the openings  conceivable, the reduction or increase in surface resistance of the resistance material or the replacement of the resistance measure teriales at least partially by a metallic conductor.

The modification of the conductivity of the resistance material around the opening is preferably in an area that is in ner area of dimension of the order of magnitude of the opening speaks. This area can preferably also be in several zones be divided, the areas of which are each approximately the area correspond to the opening.

In the second variant mentioned above, in which the contra stand material around the opening at least partially by a electrical conductor is replaced, this is preferred in narrow stripes arranged around the opening. The width of this Strip is preferably at least an order of magnitude smaller than the dimension of the opening.

Further refinements of the invention are given in the subordinate sayings.

In dieser stellen dar:The invention is in two embodiments based on the Drawing explained in more detail. In this represent:

Fig. 4 is a development of the housing wall of the drift chamber of an ion spectrometer with strip-shaped electrical conductors around the opening.

In Fig. 1, an ion mobility spectrometer 1 is shown, which has an inlet 2 , through which a gas flow represented by the arrow 3 with substance to be analyzed is admitted into an ionization chamber. In the ionization z. B. arranged a β-emitter through which the incoming molecules are ionized. At the end of the ionization chamber 3 , an ion gate 4 is provided which has a multiplicity of electrically conductive webs 5 which are separated from one another by openings 6 . The webs 5 are each connected in pairs and connected to a voltage source, not shown here. At the ion gate 4 , a drift chamber 7 z. B. of silicon, which, for. B. is coated in its interior with a resistance layer 8 . At the end of the drift chamber, an ion collector 9 is provided. Before the Ionenkol lector 9 , an opening 10 is located in the outer wall through which the carrier gas is discharged from the drift chamber. In the area of the ion gate 4 and in the area of the ion collector 9 , connections 11 , 12 are provided for the resistance layer 8 , which are connected to a high-voltage source, not shown, with which a high DC voltage is applied to the resistance layer, so that the inside of the Drift chamber 7 sets an axial electrostatic field, which is indicated in Fig. 1 by the arrow and the designation E.

The ion gate 4 is switched by the application of a certain voltage pattern to the rods 5 alternately permeable or blocked so that ions pass into the drift chamber 7 in the pass phase and migrate in the direction of the ion collector 9 . The ions impinging on the ion collector 9 cause a signal current there, which is amplified in an amplifier 13 and subsequently converted, stored and evaluated in an analysis / digital manner in an evaluation circuit 14 .

In the ion mobility spectrometer, openings 21 are usually provided on the end face of the ionization chamber 3 , through which openings a drift gas can be introduced into the drift chamber or the carrier gas can be removed from this chamber.

In Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the drift chamber 7 with the ion gate 4 , the ion collector 9 , the resistance layer 8 and the opening 10 is shown. The drift chamber is cylindrical.

In Fig. 3 a development of the wall of the drift chamber 7 is provided, which carries the resistance layer 8 on its inner surface.

Through the opening 10 in the wall of the drift chamber, the elec trical field E is deformed in the area, so that it deviates from the desired purely axial course. Since the axial field is essentially generated by a current flow I between the terminals 11 and 12 , the conductivity of the resistance layer is reduced in the current direction before the opening, which is indicated here by two zones 15 and 16 , the total areas of which are those of the opening 10 correspond. The first zone 15 has a reduced conductivity compared to the resistance layer 8 , this conductivity being reduced even further in the zone 16 . Through this area, the current flowing to the opening 10 is practically directed to the side so that it flows around the opening 10 . To this effect to be based on either side of the opening 10 zones 17 are arranged increased conductivity, to which then a zone 18 to close whose conductivity is opposite to that of Other pe gen resistance layer 8 is only slightly increased.

In Fig. 4 the development of a wall of a drift chamber is shown, which in turn is coated with a resistance layer 8 be and has an opening 10 . In the current direction I in front of the opening 10 , two zones 15 and 16 of reduced conductivity are also provided, which have the purpose of conducting the current around the opening 10 to the outside. In order to increase the flux density in this area, ie to compensate for the area of the opening 10 through which no current flows, strip-shaped conductors 19 are provided in the resistance material 8 on both sides of the opening 10 , through which the conductivity in these areas laterally the opening 10 is greatly increased. This also makes it possible to equalize the current flow and thus the electrostatic field.

Even if the resistance layer 8 is applied to the inner wall of the drift chamber in the foregoing, it is of course possible to put this coating on the outer wall.

If the drift chamber consists of a resistance material, then the current flows over the entire cross section of the drift chamber structure. Even then the conductivity will be modified either of the solid material or a surface, inside or outside, the effect described reaches the current flow despite opening for gas supply or discharge.
