Abstract
Description
In modern therapy of brain tumors, radionuclides are often implanted. A radioisotope is inserted into the center of the tumor using a small cannula and the tumor is blasted from the inside. However, the radiation that occurs, particularly at the location of the trepanation hole with a diameter of 8-15 mm, also leads to radiation pollution of the environment. It is therefore necessary to shield this radiation, which penetrates outwards. A plaster, as shown in Fig. 1, which contains a radiation-absorbing medium (lead or the like) can be used to achieve practically complete absorption in the isotope I-125, which is predominantly used today. This enables patients to participate in normal life again, which would otherwise only be possible with restrictions or with a certain radiation exposure to the environment.
Since the isotope I-125 photons with gamma energies between 29 and 35 KeV is emitted, in the simplest case the patch is on this Energy range designed. Since the half-value layer for lead at these energies is around 0.025 mm and ten half-value layers cause the radiation to be reduced to around one per thousand, can provide almost complete protection with a layer thickness of 2 mm of the environment. It is important that the A precise description of the plaster packaging Radiation protection values.
Conversely, the patch can also be used for therapeutic purposes Reasons from outside radiation are optimized so that certain areas of the patient's skin have a defined lower dose receive.
A number of designs are possible according to the different applications. In Fig. 1 one of the conceivable versions is shown: 1 - adhesive zone, 2 - plaster cover, 3 - absorbent layer, either multi-layer or - with a higher layer thickness, structured as shown in Fig. 2. In the latter case, the absorber layer exists - because of the necessary Adaptation to the body contours of the patient - from individual lamellae, which are arranged overlapping, as Fig. 2 shows in the lateral section. 4 - intermediate layer made of plastic or cellulose film, 5 - wound-dressing plaster layer. An embodiment is also conceivable in which the plaster is designed in the form of a pocket, so that one or more absorption foils can be inserted.
