Der Schaft besteht dabei aus einem Material, das einen hohen Reibungskoeffizienten bezüglich des Materials der Sohle samt Randteil aufweist, wie z. B. Wildleder mit aufgerauhter Oberfläche oder auch Kunststoff mit rauher Oberfläche, so daß eine Relativverschiebung zwischen Schaft und Sohle bzw. Randteil ausgeschlossen ist, sofern sich der Kletterschuh im Einsatz befindet. Als besonders geeignet hat sich als Material für die Sohle und das dazu gehörige Randteil ein Butylkautschuk herausgestellt mit den folgenden Eigenschaften:
