Description

  • Hintergrund der Erfindung
  • Diese Erfindung bezieht sich auf interaktive Fernsehprogrammführer und insbesondere auf ein interaktives Fernsehprogrammführersystem zur Bestimmung von Anwenderwerten für demographische Kategorien, so dass die bestimmten Werte für spezifizierte Verwendungen wie etwa zum Richten von Werbungen verwendet werden können.
  • Kabelfernseh-, Satellitenfernseh- und Fernsehrundfunksysteme bieten den Zuschauern eine große Anzahl von Fernsehkanälen. (Eine wesentliche Diskussion der verschiedenen Probleme in Bezug auf die Zunahme der Programmkapazität von Fernsehprogrammliefersystemen ist gegeben in Hendricks u. a., US-Patent 5.559.549 .) Herkömmlich schlagen Zuschauer in gedruckten Fernsehprogrammführern nach, um die Programme zu bestimmen, die zu einer besonderen Zeit gesendet werden. In jüngerer Zeit werden interaktive elektronische Fernsehprogrammführer entwickelt, die es ermöglichen, Fernsehprogramminformationen auf dem Fernsehapparat eines Zuschauers anzuzeigen.
  • Interaktive Programmführer sind typisch in Settop-Boxen implementiert. Diese Programmführer ermöglichen den Zuschauern, Fernsehprogrammlisten in verschiedenen Anzeigeformaten zu betrachten. Beispielsweise kann ein Anwender den Programmführer anweisen, ein Gitter von Programmlisten anzuzeigen, die in einer in Bezug auf den Kanal oder in Bezug auf die Zeit geordneten Liste organisiert sind. Außerdem können die Anwender die Programmlisten in Bezug auf das Thema (z. B. Filme, Sport usw.) oder in Bezug auf den Titel (d. h. alphabetisch) durchsuchen und sortieren. Dadurch, dass ein Anwender ein hervorgehobenes Gebiet in einer gewünschten Programmliste anordnet und auf eine "Info"-Schaltfläche drückt, kann er zusätzliche Informationen für ein Programm erhalten.   • Die Wechselwirkungen des Anwenders mit dem Programmführer geben die Interessen des Anwenders an. Wenn der Anwender z. B. einen Bezahlfernsehfilm kauft, zeigt die Tatsache, dass er diesen Kauf tätigt, dass der Anwender an Filmen dieser Art interessiert ist. Das Durchsuchen nach Programmlisten in der Kategorie "Sport" gibt an, dass der Anwender an Sport interessiert ist. Obgleich die Wechselwirkungen des Anwenders mit dem Programmführer die Interessen des Anwenders angeben, überwachen oder verwenden zuvor bekannte Programmführersysteme diese Informationen nicht.
  • In der gemeinsam übertragenen, gemeinsam anhängigen PCT-Patentanmeldung Nr. WO 99/45702 , eingereicht am 4. März 1998, ist ein Programmführersystem zur Bestimmung der Interessen eines Anwenders durch Überwachung der Wechselwirkungen des Anwenders mit dem Programmführer beschrieben. Außerdem beschreibt die Anmeldung WO 99/45702 die Verwendung der Interessen des Anwenders zur Darstellung von Werbungen oder zum Ausführen von Aktionen in dem Programmführer.
  • Es wäre deshalb wünschenswert, einen systematischen Zugang zur Klassifizierung von Anwenderinformationen in demographische Kategorien schaffen zu können, die daraufhin für spezifizierte Zwecke wie etwa zum Richten von Werbungen oder zum Ausführen bestimmter Aktionen in dem Programmführer verwendet werden könnten. Wie es in der gesamten vorliegenden Anmeldung verwendet wird, bedeutet "demographische Kategorien" Kategorien von Anwenderinformationen wie etwa das Einkommen, das Alter, Hobbys usw., die als eine Grundlage zur Identifizierung und Auswahl dienen. Vorteile, die ein solcher systematischer Zugang bieten würde, umfassen größere Effektivität und weniger Kosten beim Erzielen eines spezifizierten Zwecks. Beispielsweise bedeutet die Verwendung demographischer Kategorien zum Richten von Werbungen effektiveres Richten von Werbungen und folglich niedrigere Kosten. Die Werber könnten demographische Kategorien auswählen, um sicherzustellen, dass die Werbungen nur an die Anwender gerichtet werden, die am wahrscheinlichsten an den von ihnen angebotenen Produkten oder Diensten interessiert sind.
  • Somit ist es eine Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung, ein Programmführersystem zu schaffen, das Informationen, die aus einer Wechselwirkung des Anwenders mit dem Programmführer erhalten werden, in demographische Kategorien klassifiziert. Eine weitere Aufgabe der Erfindung ist die Bestimmung von Anwenderwerten für die demographischen Kategorien. Eine nochmals weitere Aufgabe der Erfindung ist die Schaffung eines interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführersystems, das Anwenderwerte für die demographischen Kategorien bestimmt, so dass Werber spezifische demographische Kategorien von Bedeutung auswählen können, um sicherzustellen, dass die von ihnen angebotenen Produkte oder Dienste an jene Anwender gerichtet werden, die am wahrscheinlichsten am Kauf der Produkte oder Dienste interessiert sind.
  • Zusammenfassung der Erfindung
  • Diese und weitere Aufgaben der Erfindung werden gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung durch ein interaktives Fernsehprogrammführersystem und durch ein interaktives Fernsehprogrammführerverfahren zur Bestimmung von Anwendereingabewerten für demographische Kategorien gelöst, wie sie in den Ansprüchen 1 und 9 definiert sind. Das System umfasst ein Anwenderfernsehgerät mit: einem Empfänger zum Empfangen von Programmführerinformationen für den interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführer, einem Anwendereingabeempfänger zum Empfangen einer Anwendereingabe von einer Anwenderschnittstelle wie etwa einer Fernsteuerung oder Fernbedienung, einem Mikroprozessor, der die empfangene Anwendereingabe verwendet, um Anwenderwerte für demographische Kategorien zu bestimmen, und einem Speicher zum Speichern der bestimmen Anwenderwerte.
  • In einer veranschaulichenden Verwendung des Systems zum Richten von Werbungen an einen Anwender des interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführers empfängt der Empfänger außerdem Werbungen, die im Voraus gewählte Werte für spezifizierte demographische Kategorien haben. Das Anwenderfernsehgerät vergleicht, vorzugsweise unter Verwendung des Mikroprozessors, die im Voraus gewählten Werte für die spezifizierten demographischen Kategorien, die den Werbungen zugeordnet sind, mit Werten der entsprechenden demographischen Kategorien, die im Speicher gespeichert sind, um zu bestimmen, welche Werbungen angezeigt werden sollten. Diese Werbungen, von denen anhand des Vergleichs bestimmt worden ist, dass sie anzeigbar sind, werden daraufhin angezeigt.
  • Weitere Merkmale der Erfindung, ihr Wesen und verschiedene Vorteile gehen besser aus der beigefügten Zeichnung und aus der folgenden ausführlichen Beschreibung der bevorzugten Ausführungsformen hervor.
  • Kurzbeschreibung der Zeichnung
  • 1 ist ein Diagramm eines veranschaulichenden Systems zum Richten von Werbungen an einen Anwender eines interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführers in Übereinstimmung mit der vorliegenden Erfindung.
  • 2 ist eine Liste von zehn beispielhaften demographischen Kategorien und ihren Werten sowie im Voraus gewählten Werten für zwei Werbungen, die von dem Anwenderfernsehgerät aus 1 empfangen werden, in Übereinstimmung mit der vorliegenden Erfindung.
  • 3 ist eine Tabelle, die vier beispielhafte Anwendereingaben und ihre im Voraus bestimmten Gewichtungswerte, die durch das Anwenderfernsehgerät aus 1 zu verwenden sind, um Werte für demographische Kategorien zu bestimmen, in Übereinstimmung mit der vorliegenden Erfindung zeigt.
  • 4 ist eine Tabelle, die für jeden der Kanäle, die von dem Anwenderfernsehgerät aus 1 zu verwenden sind, beispielhafte demographische Kategorien und einen im Voraus gewählten Wert und Gewichtungsfaktor, um Werte für demographische Kategorien zu bestimmen, in Übereinstimmung mit der vorliegenden Erfindung zeigt.
  • 5 ist ein Ablaufplan, der die Schritte zeigt, die an der Anzeige von Werbungen auf der Grundlage demographische Informationen beteiligt sind, in Übereinstimmung mit der vorliegenden Erfindung.
  • Ausführliche Beschreibung der bevorzugten Ausführungsformen
  • In 1 ist ein veranschaulichendes Programmführersystem 30 zur Verwendung beim Richten von Werbungen an spezifizierte Anwender in Übereinstimmung mit der vorliegenden Erfindung gezeigt. Obgleich der spezifizierte Zweck, für den die demographischen Anwenderinformationen zu verwenden sind, veranschaulichend als das Richten von Werbungen gezeigt ist, ist für den Fachmann auf dem Gebiet offensichtlich, dass demographische Anwenderinformationen außerdem für andere spezifizierte Zwecke verwendet werden können.
  • Eine Haupteinrichtung 32 enthält eine Programmführerdatenbank 34 zum Spei chern von Programmführerinformationen wie etwa Fernsehprogrammführer-Listendaten, Bezahlfernseh-Bestellinformationen, Fernsehprogramm-Reklameinformationen usw. Außerdem enthält die Haupteinrichtung 32 eine Werbungsdatenbank 36 zum Speichern von Werbungsinformationen. Die Informationen aus den Datenbanken 34 und 36 können über die Kommunikationsverbindung 40 an eine Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38 gesendet werden. Obgleich in 1 lediglich eine solche Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38 gezeigt ist, um eine übermäßige Verkomplizierung der Zeichnung zu vermeiden, gibt es typisch zahlreiche Fernsehverteilungseinrichtungen 38, an die die Informationen von der Haupteinrichtung 32 parallel gesendet werden. Die Verbindung 40 kann eine Satellitenverbindung, eine Telephonnetzverbindung, eine Kabel- oder Glasfaserverbindung, eine Mikrowellenverbindung, eine Kombination dieser Verbindungen oder irgendein anderer geeigneter Kommunikationspfad sein. Falls erwünscht ist, über die Verbindung 40 außer Datensignalen Videosignale (z. B. für Werbungs- und Reklamevideos) zu senden, wird eine Verbindung mit verhältnismäßig hoher Bandbreite wie etwa eine Satellitenverbindung gegenüber einer Verbindung mit verhältnismäßig niedriger Bandbreite wie etwa einer Telephonverbindung allgemein bevorzugt.
  • Die Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38 ist eine Einrichtung zum Verteilen von Fernsehsignalen an Anwender wie etwa eine Kabelsystem-Kopfstelle, eine Rundfunkverteilungseinrichtung oder eine Satellitenfernseh-Verteilungseinrichtung.
  • Die durch die Haupteinrichtung 32 an die Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38 gesendeten Programmführerinformationen umfassen Fernsehprogrammlistendaten wie etwa Programmzeiten, Kanäle, Titel, Beschreibungen usw. Außerdem umfassen die gesendeten Programminformationen Bezahlprogrammdaten wie etwa Preisinformationen für Einzelprogramme und Abonnementkanäle, Zeitfenster für die Bestellung von Programmen und Kanälen, Telephonnummern für das Aufgeben von Bestellungen, die nicht per Impuls bestellt werden können, usw. Die durch die Haupteinrichtung 32 an die Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38 gesendeten Werbungsinformationen umfassen Text-, Graphik-, Video- und/oder andere (z. B. Audio-)Werbungen für verschiedene Produkte und Dienste. Wie später ausführlicher beschrieben wird, können die Werbungsinformationen außerdem im Voraus gewählte Werte für demographische Kategorien enthalten, die jeder Werbung zugeordnet sind.
  • Auf Wunsch können einige der Programmführer- und Werbungsinformationen unter Verwendung von Datenquellen in anderen Einrichtungen als der Haupteinrichtung 32 geliefert werden. Beispielsweise können Daten, die sich auf. eine Bezahlprogramm-Bestellungsverarbeitung beziehen (z. B. Abrechnungsdaten und dergleichen) durch ein Bestellungsverarbeitungs- und Bestellungsabrechnungssystem erzeugt werden, das von der Haupteinrichtung 32 getrennt ist und das von der Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38 getrennt ist. Ähnlich können Werbungsinformationen durch eine Werbungseinrichtung erzeugt werden, die von der Haupteinrichtung 32 und von der Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38 getrennt ist.
  • Unabhängig von ihrer Quelle können Werbungsinformationen auf Wunsch in einem Server 42 in der Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38 gehalten werden. Der Server 42 kann in der Lage sein, Text, Graphik und Video zu behandeln.
  • Die Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38 verteilt die Programmführer- und Werbungsinformationen über die Kommunikationspfade 46 an das Anwenderfernsehgerät 44. Das Anwenderfernsehgerät kann eine Settop-Box enthalten oder kann auf Wunsch ein fortgeschrittener Fernsehempfänger oder ein Personal-Computer-Fernsehapparat (PC-TV) sein. Jeder Kommunikationspfad 46 kann eine Satellitenverbindung, eine Telephonnetzverbindung, eine Kabel- oder Glasfaserverbindung, eine Mikrowellenverbindung, eine Kombination dieser Verbindungen oder irgendein anderer geeigneter Kommunikationspfad sein. Die Programmführerdaten können über einen Außerbandkanal auf dem Pfad 46, über einen Inband-Digitalkanal oder über irgendeine andere geeignete Technik verteilt werden. Die Werbungsinformationen können unter Verwendung irgendeiner aus einer Anzahl geeigneter Techniken verteilt werden. Beispielsweise können Text- und Graphikwerbungen unter Verwendung eines Außerbandmodulators über einen Außerbandkanal verteilt werden. Videowerbungen können ebenfalls auf diese Weise verteilt werden, obgleich große Mengen von Videoinformationen effizienter unter Verwendung eines oder mehrerer digitaler Kanäle auf dem Pfad 46 verteilt werden können. Diese Digitalkanäle können ebenfalls zur Verteilung von Text und Graphik verwendet werden.
  • Jeder Anwender besitzt eine Empfängereinheit, die typisch eine Settop-Box 48 ist, aber auch ein anderes geeignetes Fernsehgerät sein kann, in das die Settop-Box-Funktionalität, wie sie hier beschrieben wird, integriert worden ist. Die Programmführerdaten werden periodisch an die Settop-Boxen 48 verteilt. Die Fern sehverteilungseinrichtung 38 kann die Settop-Boxen 48 außerdem periodisch auf bestimmte Informationen (z. B. Bezahlprogramm-Konteninformationen oder Informationen in Bezug auf Progamme, die unter Verwendung lokal erzeugter Zugriffsberechtigungstechniken gekauft und betrachtet wurden) abfragen.
  • Jede Settop-Box 48 ist typisch mit einem optionalen Videokassettenrekorder 50 verbunden, so dass ausgewählte Fernsehprogramme aufgenommen werden können. Der Videokassettenrekorder 50 ist mit einem Fernsehapparat 52 verbunden. Um ein Programm aufzunehmen, stimmt die Settop-Box 48 auf einen besonderen Kanal ab und sendet sie (z. B. unter Verwendung eines Infrarotsenders) Steuersignale an den Videokassettenrekorder 50, die den Videokassettenrekorder 50 anweisen, das Aufnehmen zu den richtigen Zeitpunkten zu starten und anzuhalten.
  • In dem Anwenderfernsehgerät 44 ist (z. B. in der Settop-Box 48) ein interaktiver Fernsehprogrammführer implementiert. Während der Verwendung des in der Settop-Box 48 implementierten interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführers können auf dem Fernsehapparat 52 Fernsehprogrammlisten angezeigt werden. Sowohl die Settop-Box 48 als auch der Videokassettenrekorder 50 und der Fernsehapparat 52 können durch eine oder mehrere Fernsteuerungen 54 oder durch irgendeine andere geeignete Anwendereingabeschnittstelle wie etwa eine drahtlose Tastatur, eine Maus, einen Trackball, eine hierfür vorgesehene Menge von Schaltflächen usw. gesteuert werden.
  • Die Settop-Box 48 enthält einen Mikroprozessor 60, einen Anwendereingabeempfänger 62 und einen Speicher 64. Weitere Komponenten der Settop-Box, die zur Implementierung eines Programmführers erforderlich sind, werden hier nicht genau beschrieben, da sie nicht Bestandteil der vorliegenden Erfindung sind. Der Anwendereingabeempfänger 62 empfängt eine Anwendereingabe von der Fernsteuerung 54 oder von anderen Anwendereingabeschnittstellen. Beispielsweise ist der Anwendereingabeempfänger ein Infrarotsignalempfänger, falls die Anwendereingabe durch ein Infrarotfernsteuersignal gesendet werden soll. Wie später ausführlicher beschrieben wird, verwendet der Mikroprozessor 60 die durch den Anwendereingabeempfänger 62 empfangenen Anwendereingabesignale, um die Werte für verschiedene demographische Kategorien zu berechnen.
  • Außerdem vergleicht der Mikroprozessor 60 die Werte der im Speicher 64 gespei cherten für den Anwender relevanten demographischen Kategorien mit den im Voraus gewählten Werten, die jeder von der Settop-Box 48 empfangenen Werbung zugeordnet sind, um zu bestimmen, ob die Werbung auf dem Fernsehapparat 52 angezeigt werden soll. Der Speicher 64, der vorzugsweise ein nichtflüchtiger Speicher ist, speichert die Werte der demographischen Kategorien für den Anwender. Außerdem kann der Speicher 64 Informationen speichern, die zur Berechnung der Werte der demographischen Kategorien für den Anwender erforderlich sind. Beispielsweise kann der Speicher 64 Informationen wie die Wahrscheinlichkeit speichern, dass ein Zuschauer, der den Kanal ESPN sieht, ein Sportanhänger ist. Diese Informationen können außerdem in einem weiteren Speicher gespeichert sein, der elektrisch mit dem Mikroprozessor 60 gekoppelt ist.
  • 2 ist eine Beispielliste der demographischen Kategorien und der im Speicher 64 gespeicherten Werte der demographischen Kategorien für den Anwender. Außerdem zeigt 2 die im Voraus gewählten Werte für zwei durch die Settop-Box 48 empfangene Werbungen. Unter der Überschrift demographische Kategorien sind zehn beispielhafte im Voraus definierte demographische Kategorien gezeigt. Diese Kategorien sind: (1) Sportanhänger, (2) Sience-Fiction-Anhänger, (3) Eltern, (4) Hundeliebhaber, (5) Katzenliebhaber, (6) Jahreseinkommen über 20.000 $, (7) Jahreseinkommen über 30.000 $, (8) Jahreseinkommen über 50.000 $, (9) weiblich, im Altersbereich von 20–35 und (10) männlich, im Altersbereich von 18–40.
  • Der Wert für jede der demographischen Kategorien reicht von 0 bis 1. Null gibt an, dass der Anwender nicht an die demographische Kategorie angepasst ist (oder die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass der Anwender an die Kategorie angepasst ist, null ist). Eins gibt an, dass der Anwender vollständig an die demographische Kategorie angepasst ist (oder die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass der Anwender an die Kategorie angepasst ist, eins ist). Irgendein Wert zwischen 0 und 1 gibt an, dass der Anwender teilweise an die demographische Kategorie angepasst ist, wobei eine höhere Zahl eine dementsprechend bessere Anpassung angibt. Die Auswahl dieses Bereichs ist nicht wichtig, wobei zur Lösung der Aufgaben der vorliegenden Erfindung irgendein anderer Bereich (z. B. 1–10) oder eine andere Darstellung der demographischen Informationen (z. B. Codes, Kennzeichen, Zeichen oder dergleichen) verwendet werden können. Die Bestimmung der Werte für die demographischen Kategorien wird später beschrieben.
  • Für den beispielhaften Anwender aus 2 geben die Werte für die demographischen Kategorien an, dass der Anwender männlich und in der Altersgruppe von 18–40 ist, sein Jahreseinkommen über 20.000 $, jedoch nicht über 30.000 $ liegt, er ein absoluter Sportanhänger ist und ein stärkerer Katzenliebhaber (Wert 0,7) als Hundeliebhaber (Wert 0,5) ist.
  • Die Werbung Nr. 1, von der lediglich für Erläuterungszwecke angenommen wird, dass sie für ein Geländefahrzeug ist, besitzt für die demographische Kategorie Sportanhänger den im Voraus gewählten Wert von wenigstens 0,5 und für die demographische Kategorie Jahreseinkommen über 30.000 $ den im Voraus gewählten Wert 1. Es wird angemerkt, dass 2 nicht notwendig angibt, was ein tatsächlicher Werber für Geländefahrzeuge hinsichtlich der Werte oder sogar demographischen Kategorien auswählt, sondern für Veranschaulichungszwecke geeignet ist. Der im Voraus gewählte Wert 0,5 für die Kategorie Sportanhänger bedeutet, dass der Werber die Werbung Nr. 1 an jemanden richten möchte, der wenigstens mäßig an Sport interessiert ist. Außerdem möchte sie der Werber an jemanden richten, der wenigstens 30.000 $ im Jahr verdient. Da der Anwender in dem Beispiel aus 2 nicht an die Einkommenskategorie angepasst ist, wird die Werbung Nr. 1 nicht auf dem Fernsehapparat 52 des Anwenders angezeigt.
  • Die Werbung Nr. 2, von der lediglich für Erläuterungszwecke angenommen wird, dass sie für Bier ist, besitzt für die demographische Kategorie Sportanhänger den im Voraus gewählten Wert von wenigstens 0,7 und für die demographische Kategorie männlich, in der Altersgruppe 18–40, den im Voraus gewählten Wert 1. Der im Voraus gewählte Wert 0,7 für die Kategorie Sportanhänger bedeutet, dass der Werber die Werbung Nr. 2 an jemanden richten möchte, der wenigstens ein recht erhebliches Interesse an Sport hat. Außerdem möchte sie der Werber an jemanden richten, der männlich, in der Altersgruppe von 18–40, ist. Da der Anwender in 2, wie durch die Wert demonstriert wird, an beide Kategorien angepasst ist, wird die Werbung Nr. 2 auf dem Fernsehapparat 52 des Anwenders angezeigt.
  • Der Wert für jede demographische Kategorie ist aussagefähig für die Eigenschaften des Anwenders. Es gibt viele verschiedene Arten, die Werte für diese demographischen Kategorien zu berechnen oder zu bestimmen. Auf Wunsch kann irgendeine geeignete Technik zum Erzeugen von Informationen, die die demographischen Eigenschaften des Anwenders repräsentieren, verwendet werden. Bei spielsweise können die demographischen Informationen über die Anwender unter Verwendung von Erhebungen (Online, Telephon, Vertreter, Post, gestützt durch den Programmführer usw.) oder durch eine andere Art der Marktforschung gesammelt werden. Im Folgenden wird eine geeignete Technik zur Berechnung oder Bestimmung der Werte für die demographischen Kategorien beschrieben, die auf den Anwendereingaben in dem Programmführer beruht.
  • Den Anwendereingaben, die von dem Anwendereingabeempfänger 62 empfangen werden, sind im Voraus bestimmte Gewichtungswerte (WV) zugeordnet. In 3 sind vier solche beispielhafte Anwendereingaben mit den entsprechenden Gewichtungswerten gezeigt (die Auswahl des Wertebereichs 0–1 für die Gewichtungswerte ist an sich nicht erheblich): das Aufnehmen eines Programms mit dem Gewichtungswert 1,0; das Einstellen einer Erinnerung mit dem Gewichtungswert 0,5; das Einstellen eines Programms und Sehen wenigstens fünf Minuten mit einem Gewichtungswert 0,5; und das Empfangen von Informationen über ein Programm mit dem Gewichtungswert 0,25. Die Gewichtungswerte geben die Wirkung an, die die entsprechenden Anwendereingaben auf die Werte der demographischen Kategorien haben. Je größer der Gewichtungswert einer Anwendereingabe ist, desto größer sind die Werte der demographischen Kategorien, die dieser Anwendereingabe zugeordnet sind. Somit besitzt ein Anwender, der ein Programm aufnimmt, gemäß dem Beispiel aus 3 größere Werte für die relevanten demographischen Kategorien als wenn er Informationen über dasselbe Programm ausliest. Dies ist so, da die Tätigkeit des Aufnehmens eines Programms allgemein ein größeres Niveau des Interesses an dem Programm als, lediglich das Auslesen von Informationen für das Programm angibt.
  • Jedem Kanal und Programm, die einen Einfluss auf wenigstens eine der demographischen Kategorien haben, kann für jede demographische Kategorie ein im Voraus gewählter Wert (PV) zugeordnet sein. Dieser im Voraus gewählte Wert gibt für den Kanal oder für das Programm an, wie gut ein Anwender an die demographische Kategorie angepasst ist. Wie in 4 gezeigt ist, kann z. B. dem Kanal ESPN ein im Voraus gewählter Wert von 0,95 (aus dem Wertebereich von 0–1) bei der demographischen Kategorie Sportanhänger zugeordnet sein, da es eine sehr starke Wahrscheinlichkeit gibt, dass ein Zuschauer von ESPN ein Sportanhänger ist. Dagegen kann dem Kanal ESPN ein im Voraus gewählter Wert von 0,5 bei der demographischen Kategorie Katzenliebhaber zugeordnet sein, da es wahrscheinlich keine starke Verbindung zwischen den beiden gibt. Die im Voraus gewählten Werte können aus Forschung, Erhebung, Umfrage oder irgendwelchen anderen zuverlässigen Mitteln bestimmt werden. Es wird wieder angemerkt, dass die Auswahl des Wertebereichs 0–1 für die im Voraus gewählten Werte an sich nicht erheblich ist.
  • Vorzugsweise ist jeder demographischen Kategorie ein im Voraus eingestellter Wert zugewiesen. Beispielsweise kann die demographische Kategorie Sportanhänger einen im Voraus eingestellten Wert 0,5 haben. Der im Voraus eingestellte Wert kann den Wert für einen "typischen" Anwender repräsentieren und wird wie unten diskutiert bei der Berechnung des Werts der demographischen Kategorie für den Anwender verwendet.
  • Jede demographische Kategorie kann eine Periode (P) besitzen, die die Minimalzahl der Anwendereingaben ist, die erforderlich sind, bevor angenommen wird, dass die demographische Kategorie in Bezug auf den Anwender bedeutsam und aussagekräftig ist. Beispielsweise kann der demographischen Kategorie Sportanhänger eine Periode fünf zugeordnet sein.
  • Jeder Kanal oder jedes Programm, die einen im Voraus gewählten Wert für eine zugeordnete demographische Kategorie besitzen, kann ein im Voraus bestimmter Gewichtungsfaktor (WF) zugeordnet sein. Wie in 4 gezeigt ist, kann der Kanal ESPN z. B. für die demographische Kategorie Sportanhänger einen Gewichtungsfaktor 2 haben. Der Gewichtungsfaktor repräsentiert die Signifikanz des Kanals oder Programms in Bezug auf die Periode für die demographische Kategorie.
  • Der Wert für eine demographische Kategorie ist für jede Anwendereingabe, die einen relevanten Kanal oder ein relevantes Programm betrifft, wie folgt:

  • Vd(i – 1) ist der vorangehende Wert für die demograhische Kategorie, während i die Anzahl der Anwendereingaben repräsentiert. Wo i = 1 ist (d. h. die erste Anwendereingabe, die einen relevanten Kanal oder ein relevantes Programm betrifft, denen die demographische Kategorie zugeordnet sind), ist das oben verwendete Vd(i – 1) der im Voraus eingestellte Wert für die demographische Kategorie. Es wird angemerkt, dass in Übereinstimmung mit der vorliegenden Erfindung zur Bestimmung der Werte für die demographischen Kategorien irgendeine andere Gleichung oder Funktion verwendet werden kann, die auf der Grundlage der Anwendereingaben in das System in Bezug auf die Interessen des Anwenders richtig aussagefähig ist.
  • Als ein Beispiel wird ausgehend von drei Anwendereingaben die Bestimmung des Werts für die demographische Kategorie Sportanhänger beschrieben. Es wird angenommen, dass die drei Anwendereingaben wie folgt sind: (1) Auslesen von Informationen über ein Sportereignis auf ESPN; (2) Einstellen und Sehen von ESPN wenigstens fünf Minuten; und (3) Aufnehmen eines Sportereignisses von ESPN. Unter Verwendung der Werte, die in den oben und in 3 gegebenen Beispielen dargestellt sind, ist

  • Nach den drei Anwendereingaben, die ESPN betreffen, ist der Wert der demographischen Kategorie Sportanhänger 0,7556, was angibt, dass der Anwender ein sehr starker Sportanhänger ist. Da lediglich drei Anwendereingaben empfangen wurden und die im Voraus definierte Periode für die demographische Kategorie Sportanhänger fünf ist, ist es aber möglich, dass der berechnete Wert für das Richten von Werbungen nicht signifikant genug ist (es wird angemerkt, dass der berechnete Wert auf Wunsch dennoch verwendet werden kann). Falls der berechnete Wert aus diesem Grund nicht verwendet werden soll, kann stattdessen der im Voraus eingestellte Wert verwendet werden.
  • Bevorzugt werden Werbungen auf der Grundlage momentaner Anwenderinformationen an Anwender gerichtet. Somit schafft die vorliegende Erfindung eine Abfallsfunktion, um die Werte der demographischen Kategorien für die Anwender auf periodischer Grundlage wie etwa alle sieben Tage oder auf der Grundlage einer spezifizierten Anzahl von Anwendereingaben "aufzufrischen".
  • Als ein Beispiel wird angenommen, dass der im Speicher 64 gespeicherte Wert für die demographische Kategorie Sportanhänger 0,8 ist und dass die Abfallsfunktion den Wert für die demographische Kategorie Sportanhänger alle sieben Tage, während denen keine Eingabeaktion empfangen worden ist, auffrischt. Falls es sieben Tage her ist, seit die letzte Anwendereingabe, die die demographische Kategorie Sportanhänger beeinflusst, empfangen worden ist, frischt die Abfallsfunktion den Wert für die Kategorie Sportanhänger auf einen im Voraus bestimmten Wert wie etwa auf den im Voraus eingestellten Wert für die demographische Kategorie auf. Die Abfallsfunktion kann außerdem die oben gegebene Formel für vd(i) mit anderen Werten/Parametern verwenden. Es wird angemerkt, dass die Ausführung der Abfallsfunktion vorzugsweise dem Mikroprozessor 60 überlassen wird.
  • In 2 ist etwas veranschaulicht, was der Schwellenwertzugang zum Richten von Werbungen an Anwender genannt werden kann. Das heißt, falls der im Voraus gewählte Wert bzw. die im Voraus gewählten Werte einer demographischen Kategorie für eine Werbung durch den Wert der demographischen Kategorie für den Anwender erfüllt sind, wird die Werbung dem Anwender durch den Programmführer angezeigt.
  • Ein weiterer Zugang zum Richten von Werbungen an Anwender kann der Zugang der besten Anpassung oder der nächste Zugang genannt werden. In diesen Zugang wird aus den Werten der demographischen Kategorien für den Anwender die "Nähe" der im Voraus gewählten Werte der demographischen Kategorien für eine Werbung bestimmt. Diese Nähe kann z. B. dadurch bestimmt werden, dass für jede demographische Kategorie die absolute Differenz zwischen dem im Voraus gewählten Wert und dem Anwenderwert berechnet wird und daraufhin alle absoluten Differenzen addiert werden. Außerdem kann der quadratische Mittelwert verwendet werden. Der Zugang der besten Näherung ist besonders nützlich dort, wo gewünscht ist, die anzuzeigende Werbung bzw. die anzuzeigenden Werbungen unter vielen Werbungen, die an die Settop-Box des Anwenders gesendet werden, auszuwählen.
  • Es wird angemerkt, dass die Werte der demographischen Kategorien auf Anwenderinformationen aus einer externen Quelle beruhen können. Wenn beispielsweise das Jahreseinkommen des Anwenders aus öffentlich verfügbaren Informationen oder aus einem durch den Anwender ausgefüllten Formular bestimmt wird, können diese Informationen an die Settop-Box gesendet und im Speicher gespeichert werden.
  • In dem veranschaulichenden Programmführersystem 30 aus 1 berechnet die Settop-Box 48 die Werte für die demographischen Kategorien, speichert sie die berechneten Werte und andere zum Berechnen der Werte erforderlichen Informationen und vergleicht sie die Werte der für den Anwender relevanten demographischen Kategorien mit den im Voraus gewählten Werten, die jeder Werbung zugeordnet sind, um zu bestimmen, ob die Werbung angezeigt werden soll. Das Programmführersystem der vorliegenden Erfindung kann auf eine Weise abgeändert werden, die für den Fachmann auf dem Gebiet beim Lesen der vorliegenden Beschreibung offensichtlich ist, so dass irgendwelche dieser von der Settop-Box ausgeführten Operationen stattdessen in der Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38 oder in der Haupteinrichtung 32 oder an irgendeinem anderen (in 1 nicht gezeigten) Ort ausgeführt werden können.
  • Die an der Anzeige von Werbungen auf der Grundlage demographischer Informationen beteiligten Schritte sind in 5 gezeigt. In Schritt 66 werden unter Verwendung einer geeigneten Technik wie etwa einer Erhebung oder durch Überwachung der Aktionen des Anwenders mit dem Programmführer und Berechnen der Informationen über demographische Kategorien auf der Grundlage der Aktionen des Anwenders und im Speicher gespeicherter im Voraus gewählter Informationen die Informationen über demographische Kategorien für den Anwender bestimmt. In Schritt 68 werden die Informationen über demographische Kategorien, die repräsentativ für das demographische Profil des Anwenders sind, im Fernsehgerät 44 des Anwenders gespeichert. In Schritt 70 werden Werbungen mit zugeordneten Informationen über demographische Kategorien (die repräsentativ für das Publikum sind, an das die Werber die Werbungen richten möchten) (z. B. durch Senden von der Haupteinrichtung 32 und Verteilen über die Fernsehverteilungseinrichtung 38) an das Anwenderfernsehgerät verteilt. In Schritt 72 bestimmt der Programmführer durch Vergleich der Informationen über demographische Kategorien, die den Werbungen zugeordnet sind, mit den Informationen über demographische Kategorien des Anwenders, welche Werbungen für den Anwender angezeigt werden sollen.
  • Das Vorstehende veranschaulicht lediglich die Prinzipien der Erfindung, wobei durch den Fachmann auf dem Gebiet verschiedene Änderungen vorgenommen werden können, ohne von der Erfindung abzuweichen.

Claims (16)

  1. System zum Richten von Aktionen an einen Anwender eines interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführers, gekennzeichnet durch: ein Anwenderfernsehgerät (44), in dem der interaktive Fernsehprogrammführer implementiert ist, wobei das Anwenderfernsehprogrammgerät (44) so konfiguriert ist, dass es mehrere demographische Kategorien, die mehreren Programmführeraktionen zugeordnet sind, empfängt, wobei den demographischen Kategorien, die jeder Programmführeraktion zugeordnet sind, im Voraus gewählte Werte zugeordnet sind, dass es eine Anwendereingabe in den interaktiven Fernsehrprogrammführer verwendet, um Anwenderwerte für die mehreren demographischen Kategorien zu bestimmen, dass es die Anwenderwerte speichert und dass es die im Voraus gewählten Werte für die demographischen Kategorien, die den Aktionen zugeordnet sind, mit den gespeicherten Anwenderwerten entsprechender demographischer Kategorien vergleicht, um festzustellen, welche Aktionen in dem interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführer ausgeführt werden sollen, wobei jede Anwendereingabe, die von dem Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) empfangen wird, einen entsprechenden Gewichtungswert hat, der bei der Bestimmung der Anwenderwerte verwendet wird.
  2. System nach Anspruch 1, bei dem das Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) einen Speicher (64) umfasst, in dem die Anwenderwerte gespeichert werden.
  3. System nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, bei dem das Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) eine Fernsteuerung (54) umfasst, mit der der Anwender die Anwendereingabe für den interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführer zu dem Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) sendet.
  4. System nach Anspruch 1, 2 oder 3, bei dem das Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) einen Mikroprozessor (60) umfasst, um die Anwenderwerte mit den Anwenderwerten zu bestimmen.
  5. System nach einem vorhergehenden Anspruch, bei dem das Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) ferner so konfiguriert ist, dass es Daten von im Voraus gewählten demographischen Kategorien verwendet, die jedem Fernsehkanal und jedem Fernsehprogramm zugeordnet sind und einen Einfluss auf wenigstens eine der mehreren demographischen Kategorien bei der Bestimmung der Anwenderwerte haben.
  6. System nach einem vorhergehenden Anspruch, bei dem das Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) ferner so konfiguriert ist, dass es im Voraus eingestellte Werte verwendet, die den demographischen Kategorien zugeordnet sind, wenn Anwenderwerte bestimmt werden.
  7. System nach einem vorhergehenden Anspruch, bei dem jede demographische Kategorie einer Periode zugeordnet ist, wobei die Periode eine minimale Anzahl von Anwendereingaben angibt, die notwendig sind, bevor für den Anwenderwert, der durch das Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) für diese demographische Kategorie bestimmt wird, angenommen wird, dass er in Bezug auf den Anwender bedeutsam und aussagekräftig ist.
  8. System nach einem vorhergehenden Anspruch, bei dem das Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) ferner so konfiguriert ist, dass es die Anwenderwerte für demographische Kategorien periodisch auf einen vorgegebenen Auffrischungswert auffrischt.
  9. Verfahren zum Richten von Aktionen an einen Anwender eines interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführers, der in einem Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) implementiert ist, gekennzeichnet durch: Empfangen mehrerer demographischer Kategorien, die mehreren Programmführeraktionen zugeordnet sind; wobei den demographischen Kategorien, die jeder Programmführeraktion zugeordnet sind, im Voraus gewählte Werte zugeordnet sind; Empfangen einer Anwendereingabe für den interaktiven Fernsehpro grammführer; Bestimmen von Anwenderwerten für die mehreren demographischen Kategorien unter Verwendung der Anwendereingabe in den interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführer; Speichern der Anwenderwerte; Vergleichen der im Voraus gewählten Werte für die demographischen Kategorien, die den Aktionen zugeordnet sind, mit den gespeicherten Anwenderwerten entsprechender demographischer Kategorien, wenn die in dem interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführer anzuzeigenden Aktionen ausgewählt werden, wobei das Bestimmen der Anwenderwerte das Verwenden von Gewichtungswerten, die den Anwendereingaben entsprechen, umfasst.
  10. Verfahren nach Anspruch 9, bei dem das Speichern der Anwenderwerte das Speichern der Anwenderwerte in einem Speicher (64) in dem Anwenderfernsehgerät (68) umfasst.
  11. Verfahren nach Anspruch 9 oder 10, ferner gekennzeichnet durch das Verwenden einer Fernsteuerung (54), um die Anwendereingabe für den interaktiven Fernsehprogrammführer zu dem Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) zu senden.
  12. Verfahren nach Anspruch 9, 10 oder 11, bei dem das Bestimmen der Anwenderwerte das Verwenden eines Mikroprozessors (60) in dem Anwenderfernsehgerät (44) umfasst, um die Anwenderwerte unter Verwendung der Anwendereingabe zu bestimmen und um die im Voraus gewählten Werte mit den Anwenderwerten zu vergleichen.
  13. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 9 bis 12, bei dem das Bestimmen der Anwenderwerte das Verwenden von Daten von im Voraus gewählten demographischen Kategorien, die jedem Fernsehkanal und jedem Fernsehprogramm zugeordnet sind und einen Einfluss auf wenigstens eine der mehreren demographischen Kategorien haben, umfasst.
  14. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 9 bis 13, bei dem das Bestimmen der Anwenderwerte das Verwenden von voreingestellten Werten, die den demographischen Kategorien zugeordnet sind, umfasst.
  15. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 9 bis 14, bei dem das Bestimmen der Anwenderwerte das Verwenden einer Periode, die jeder der demographischen Kategorien zugeordnet ist, umfasst, wobei die Periode eine minimale Anzahl von Anwendereingaben angibt, die notwendig sind, bevor für den Anwenderwert angenommen wird, dass er in Bezug auf den Anwender bedeutsam und aussagekräftig ist.
  16. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 9 bis 15, ferner gekennzeichnet durch das periodische Auffrischen der Anwenderwerte für die demographischen Kategorien auf einen vorgegebenen Auffrischungswert.
