Definitions
- the end of the slide beyond the free end of the guide screw is provided with an aperture 26 the further edge of which, 28, facing towards the end of the guide screw is also of concave form and is also provided with teeth 30, this toothed edge being so disposed as to co-operate with the sets of teeth 20,22, in such a way that a pipe or rod inserted in the aperture can be clamped between the body and slide by turning the guide screw.
- the base portion of the body 32 is of circular form, and is rotatably mounted on a circular seating 34 to which it can be clamped in any desired angular orientation by means of a clamping screw 36.
- the vice will be mounted at the edge of a work bench and the rotatable base allows the vice to be turned so that the end portions of the body and slide overhang the edge of the bench and enable a long pipe or rod to be clamped clear of the bench in the vertical position.
Abstract
Description
- The invention relates to vices, and an object of the invention is to provide an improved vice particularly suitable for gripping elongated objects such as lengths of tube or rod.
- The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a vice according to the invention.
- Fig. 2 is an elevation in part section of the vice of Fig. 1 and
- Fig. 3 shows the vice is use for clamping a hollow object internally.
- Referring first to Fig. 1, the vice comprises a vice body 2 which carries a
fixed jaw 4. The body is hollow, and within it slides aslide 6 carrying the movable jaw which is moved towards or away from the fixed jaw by moving the slide by means of aguide screw 10. This guide screw is rotatably mounted at one end in the slide and engages a nut 12 (seen in the sectional view of Fig 2) mounted in, or forming part of, the vice body. - The further end of the vice body is of generally concave form at both its upper and
lower portions 16,18, and these are provided with gripping teeth 20,22.
- The base portion of the
body 32 is of circular form, and is rotatably mounted on acircular seating 34 to which it can be clamped in any desired angular orientation by means of aclamping screw 36. In normal use the vice will be mounted at the edge of a work bench and the rotatable base allows the vice to be turned so that the end portions of the body and slide overhang the edge of the bench and enable a long pipe or rod to be clamped clear of the bench in the vertical position. - As shown in Fig 2, an additional pair of toothed gripping jaws 40,42, for holding a pipe or rod horizontally, may be provided in addition to the
normal vice jaws - It will be appreciated that the rotation of the guide screw for clamping a pipe or rod in the vertical position is in the opposite direction to that required for clamping an object between the normal vice jaws. It is thus desirable that the abutment means on the guide screw which bears against the slide when the jaws are opened should be of robust construction. In a preferred version of the invention this is provided by a
collar 46 preferably of substantial cross-section, on the guide screw, held in position by acotterpin 48. In a alternative contruction a threaded nut may be placed on the guide screw instead of thecollar 46, be screwed into position, and be held there, again, by a cotterpin or by a set screw. - The fact that vice is constructed to be particularly robust in resisting the forces exerted as the jaws are opened makes it especially suitable for clamping hollow objects by gripping their internal surfaces, as is illustrated by way of example in Fig. 3. For this purpose the jaws of the vice may be made rotatable or interchangeable, and, in particular, may be made of any of the various constructions disclosed in my US Patent No. 2881645. Referring back to Fig. 1, various possibilities for the forms of the jaws are indicated in the diagramatic sketches numbered 1A to 1G.
