Description
The present invention relates to a method and a device for producing a metal foil, the metal foil being electrolytically deposited on an endless carrier tape, preferably on an endless metal tape.
In known processes for the production of metal foils, these foils, in particular copper foils, are deposited electrolytically on drums. These drums are connected as a cathode and immerse approximately 40% of their circumference in an aqueous metal salt solution. The anodes are located approximately 10 mm from the drum shell. The metal is deposited on the drum by electrical current. The speed of the drum and the current set provide the desired film thickness, with approximately 20,000 to 25,000 amperes per drum being conventionally used.
The metal foil produced in this way is pulled off the drum, wound up and then aftertreated in a separate system.
In this post-treatment system, the individual metal foils are connected to form an endless belt, transported through several galvanic cells and the desired metal or alloy layers applied.
This method has become established worldwide, but has numerous disadvantages. For example, the film structure cannot be influenced by different current densities, since only a certain current density is ever set on a drum. Furthermore, the aftertreatment must be carried out in a separate system, which means that complicated and time-consuming operating work is necessary. Finally, there is a major disadvantage of the method described above in that, in particular, thin metal foils with a thickness of less than 10 μm cannot be produced, since these foils cannot be wound up.
A method has become known from US Pat. No. 4,108,737 (Ehrhardt et al.) For producing superconducting foils, strips or wires by electrolytic deposition on an endless steel strip. In principle, however, the deposition takes place in the same way as described in the introduction. The carrier tape is wrapped in a single separator cell around a single drum which is immersed in the liquid, as is particularly apparent from the illustration in U.S. Patent No. 4,108,737.
Only a certain current strength can be set on the drum, and the purpose of the carrier tape is only to facilitate the removal of the film by passivation and cleaning baths of the carrier tape. These cleaning treatments could only be carried out with great effort on the drum itself. This method also has the same disadvantages with regard to the deposition as the previously mentioned method.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method of the type mentioned at the outset which overcomes the disadvantages set out above and ensures inexpensive production of metal foils.
This object is achieved according to the invention in a method of the type mentioned at the outset by depositing the metal foil in one or more cells, the current density being set differently along the passage of the strip through the cell or cells.
According to a further feature of the invention, the current density is also set differently along the passage of the carrier tape in each individual cell.
It is thus possible, in addition to influencing the film structure by setting different current densities in the preferably several cells of the deposition system, to also change the deposition characteristic itself in each individual cell. This feature is particularly important in applications where different metals or metal alloys are deposited in the individual cells or different electrolytes are used. In the case of a system with only one separation cell, this procedure is absolutely necessary in order to be able to influence the film structure.
In the device for carrying out the method, the endless metal strip runs through one or more vertical cells, each with two upper deflecting rollers and at least one lower deflecting roller, in which the film is built up on one side of the endless strip. The individual cells are constructed in such a way that a closed shaft through which the electrolyte flows is formed by the endless carrier tape, the anodes and laterally provided sealing strips.
According to the invention, the deposition cells are characterized by several, at least three, current rollers in the area of at least one cell, the wrap angle being at least 2 °, and in that the anode follows the course of the carrier tape.
According to an essential feature of the method according to the invention, the electrolyte flows through the cells and the flow rate is 0.1 to 6.0 m / sec, preferably 1 to 4 m / sec. This flow rate can be set as desired in this order of magnitude by means of an outlet with a variable cross section, which is provided essentially at the lowest-lying section of the anode.
According to a further feature of the invention, the current rollers are connected to the anode individually or in any combination via rectifiers.

As shown in FIG. 1, an endless carrier belt preferably runs through a plurality of
With 12 is a circulation container for the electrolyte of the cells 2nd designated. Of course,
The structure of a cell for the electrolytic production of metal foil according to the invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to FIG. 2.
The endless carrier belt 1 passes through a first
Der die Zelle 2 durchströmende Elektrolyt gelangt vom Ablauf 25 ebenfalls in den Behälter 12.The electrolyte flowing through the
According to the essential feature of the device according to the invention, there are two current rolls per cell. For this purpose, at least two
The variant which is preferably used provides, as shown in FIG. 2, exactly three current rollers per
By controlling the current rolls or current roll groups with different current strengths, it is possible to deposit the metal foil on the endless carrier tape 1 along the tape 1 in the area of the
According to the invention, it is further provided that different electrolytes are used in different cells in a multi-cell system, different metals or metal alloys being able to be deposited in different cells. In this case, the carrier tape 1 and the film on it are subjected to a rinsing with water before entering the next cell with different electrolyte.
The method according to the invention can also be used advantageously for the production of a composite material, in particular of metal composite films, one or more plants for film production being combined with unwinding devices for plastic strips in such a way that a composite material of film and plastic is produced.
Anschließend werden weitere Einzelheiten und Vorteile des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens anhand von Ausführungsbeispielen näher erläutert:Subsequently, further details and advantages of the method according to the invention are explained in more detail using exemplary embodiments:
A 17.5 μm thick copper foil made of an acidic copper sulfate electrolyte with various additives was produced in a foil plant with two cells, a 1200 mm wide carrier tape made of titanium and an anodes intended for carrying out the method according to the invention. In a further experiment, the copper foil, after drying and before being pulled off, was contacted with a plastic tape, which was coated on one side with adhesive, pressed and only then removed from the carrier tape.
By increasing the throughput speed of the carrier tape to 3.5 times the first example, a 5 μm thick copper foil was produced in a subsequent process, which was also easily removable from the carrier.
At the same plant, the titanium carrier tape was replaced by a stainless steel tape stabilized from niobium and a 20 µm thick zinc foil was made from a zinc sulfate electrolyte in several cells arranged one behind the other, which after rinsing in a downstream cell was coated with a 5 µm thick zinc-nickel layer has been. In this experiment, the current density for producing the zinc layer was 120 A / dm² and the current density for producing the zinc-nickel layer was 65 A / dm².
