Abstract

In the regulation of the ink supply according to colorimetric or densitometric parameters, process-related influences for optimum adaptation to the printing process and to the colour sensitivity of the human eye should not be left unconsidered during printing. …<??>For single-colour and multi-colour regulation, methods are therefore proposed which actuate an intended location (Soll) considering the independent boundary conditions - maximum permissible tonal value increase(s) and maximum permissible ink film thickness(s), which intended location is situated both within the tolerable tonal value increase(s) (ZSoll +/- ZTol or ZSolli +/- ZToli) and within the colour tolerance (ETol) or density tolerance (DVTol) or within the tolerance area (TolR). If the intended location (Soll1) does not fulfil these two independent boundary conditions simultaneously, the tolerance range of the tonal value increase(s) is widened and an intended location (Soll2 or Opt) is checked to establish whether it now obeys both boundary conditions simultaneously.

Description

The invention relates to a method for ink guide control of a printing press, wherein a printed sheet printed by the press is photoelectrically measured in a number of test areas, the measured values obtained are processed in connection with target values for control data, and the color guide of the printing press takes place on the basis of these control data.

The control of the color guidance in the running printing process is the most important possibility to influence the coloring and thus the image impression. The aim of the color guide control is to achieve the best possible color match between the original and the print / production run. In this context, the control of the color guidance according to colorimetric variables is to be regarded as a significant improvement, since a regulation in the sense of a comparison of target and actual values of a color location corresponds in a good approximation to the color perception of the human eye.

Spectral measurements of the remissions of color measurement fields, the mathematical conversion of these measurement values into colorimetric quantities and furthermore in control data for adjusting the color guide elements of a printing press are known. In addition to a suitably equipped printing machine and a measuring device for such a printing machine, EP-OS 0 228 347 also specifies a method for controlling the color guidance of the printing machine. The spectral remissions are used for color matching between the original and the print / production run in the color measuring fields printed by the printing press measured and the corresponding color coordinates determined. The color difference between the target and actual color coordinates is determined by comparison with the target remissions or the target color coordinates and converted into changes in the layer thicknesses of the printing inks. The color guide elements are controlled in accordance with these calculated changes in the layer thicknesses of the individual printing inks in such a way that the total color difference between the actual and the target color location in the corresponding color space is minimal.

In the as yet unpublished CH patent application 01 268 / 88-9, a method for color control of a printing press on a colorimetric basis is also proposed, which is characterized by its high convergence speed, i.e. fast detection of the relative color difference between the actual and target color location.

Although the color sensation of the human eye corresponds to the color perception, the quality of the color guide control in both processes is limited by the fact that procedural limit values are ignored in offset printing. A determined target color location remains during the entire printing process and is controlled, even if the maximum or minimum permissible layer thicknesses of one or more printing inks are exceeded or undershot. Maximum or minimum permissible layer thickness is understood here to mean the layer thickness at which the associated enlargement of the halftone dots of a printing ink leads to impermissible tonal values. These changes in the tonal value increase of the print / continued printing lead to shifts in the color location, which is reflected in color falsifications, which are particularly intolerable in the area of critical color tones (eg skin tones).

In the unpublished DE patent application P 38 12 099.2, a method is proposed which, based on the colorimetric control and taking into account the boundary conditions of a maximum layer thickness of the individual printing inks, permits a considerably more reliable and thus largely automated ink control control of a printing press.

If the target color location can only be achieved with direct control if the maximum layer thickness of a printing ink would be exceeded, it is tested from this color location at the maximum layer thickness of this printing ink whether a color location can be achieved by changing the layer thicknesses of the other printing inks. which is within the specified tolerances around the target color location. If a color location is reached in which the maximum layer thickness of a second printing ink would be exceeded, an attempt is made from this color location to use the change in the remaining printing ink to find a color location that is within the specified tolerances around the target color location. As soon as a color locus is found using the successive method steps, which lies within the maximum permissible layer thicknesses of all printing inks involved in the printing, this color locus is activated as the new target color locus. If it is not possible to reach a color location in the tolerance range around the target color location without exceeding the maximum layer thickness of at least one printing ink, the possibility is provided to intervene manually in the control process. Based on his specialist knowledge, the printer can decide whether the tolerance range should be expanded to include the target color location or whether the maximum layer thickness of the critical printing ink should be increased. With the corresponding decision, the previously described method starts again and searches again - under the boundary condition of maximum layer thicknesses - a color location that is as close as possible to the target color location.

Although this ink guideline takes into account that the maximum layer thickness of the individual printing inks must not be exceeded for an optimal match of original and print / production run, the disadvantage here is that the maximum layer thickness is specified and then assumed to be constant during the entire printing process. Process-dependent changes in the maximum layer thickness, for example as a result of changes in the consistency of the printing inks under the influence of temperature or air humidity, as a result of rubber blanket soiling or changes in the paper, are not taken into account.

It is also more favorable for optimal color control if the dot gain is direct and not only indirect, i.e. the maximum / minimum layer thickness is also taken into account. As already mentioned, the dot gain, defined as the difference between the halftone values (percentage, optically effective surface coverage) of halftone film and halftone printing is of crucial importance for the color impression of a print / production print. Even small changes in the area coverage of the grid of only one color lead to intolerable color falsifications in high-quality printed products.

In P 38 12 099.2 it is only provided with regard to the dot gain that a warning signal is output when a predetermined tolerance range of the dot gain is exceeded, the color guide control itself is not influenced thereby. For an optimal print quality and a largely automated control of the color guidance, however, maximum permissible changes in the dot gain and derived limit values for the maximum permissible layer thickness tolerances, or in the color space for the color tolerances, must not be exceeded.

The object of the invention is therefore to specify a method for controlling the ink flow of a printing press which - on the one hand, guarantees optimum print quality while observing process-related limit values, and on the other hand allows largely automated control of the ink flow. Manual intervention by the printer only has to be carried out in extreme exceptional cases.

Dichtetoleranz liegt. The object is achieved in that the dot gain at the actual location and at the target location is calculated from the measured value (s) of a halftone and a solid tone field of a printed sheet, that in the event that the dot gain at the target location is outside the dot gain tolerance, for the maximum and minimum tolerable dot gain the corresponding tolerance limits of the layer thickness are determined, that with these layer thicknesses a possible location at the limit of the tolerable dot gain is calculated as the new target location and that the target location is activated if it is also within the color tolerance or density tolerance.

According to an advantageous development of the invention, it is provided that in the event that the new target location lies outside the color tolerance or density tolerance, the dot gain tolerance is increased by a factor N (N> 1) and the optional location at the limit of Color tolerance or density tolerance is controlled as the target location if it is also within the extended tone value tolerance. In this way, largely automatic color control / regulation is achieved. This means that the color scheme is not affected until the limits of the expanded boundary conditions have been reached. This is for one consistently good print quality is an advantage, since any intervention in the control system leads to fluctuations in quality, which are felt until a new balance is reached.

Another solution to the problem provides that the tonal value increases at the actual location and at the target location are calculated from the gray field, full tone and raster measured values of a printed sheet, that in the event that the tonal value increases at the target location outside the tolerable tonal value increases, for which the maximum and minimum tolerable tonal value increases are determined the corresponding tolerance limits of the layer thicknesses of the individual printing inks, and that with these layer thicknesses a possible location at the limits of the tolerable tonal value increases is calculated and controlled as a new target location if it is additionally lies within the tolerance range.

Similar to the single-color control, the invention can also be advantageously developed in the multi-color control in such a way that in the event that the new target location lies outside the tolerance range, the dot gain tolerances are increased by a factor N (N> 1) and the ability -Location is determined at the limits of the extended, tolerable dot gain.

The following further development is to be considered advantageous, in which the "optimal" location at the intersection of the straight line connecting the optional locations with the surface of the tolerance space is controlled as the target location if the associated dot gain increases lie within the extended, tolerable dot gain increases. This development of the method ensures that the controlled target location is as close as possible to the target location.

A further development of the method according to the invention provides that measured values from gray field, halftone and solid tone fields can be determined both by means of a spectrometer and by means of a densitometer.

Furthermore, as an advantageous development of the method according to the invention, it is provided that the factor N for expanding the tone value increase tolerances is determined by means of an input.

If no suitable color locus or density locus is found that lies both within the simple or the expanded tone value increase tolerance (s) and additionally within the corresponding color tolerance (s) or density tolerance (s), a development of the method according to the invention provides that an input for the further procedure is queried using a decision list. This gives the printer the possibility to intervene in the color guide control in extreme exceptional cases. For example, he can decide which of the following decisions still delivers the best possible printing result:
  • 1. Change the target tonal value increase of a certain printing ink.
  • 2. Change the dot gain tolerance of a specific ink.
  • 3. Change the color tolerance or density tolerance of a certain printing ink.
  • 4. Control of the target location in spite of a greatly increased tone value increase in a certain color.
  • 5. Activation of the target location if it is within the tone value tolerance, but outside the color tolerance or density tolerance of a printing ink.

This decision list is created for a single color scheme. In the case of gray field control, the printer also has the option of deciding for which color the change should be made.

A further development of the method according to the invention provides that suggestions for necessary changes are calculated and displayed to the printer. This gives the printer specific information about the color changes he has to reckon with if he chooses it. This gives the printer the opportunity to find the best possible color guidance based on the values displayed, combined with his or her experience, without taking the risk of printing waste through failed correction attempts.

Embodiments of the method according to the invention are explained in more detail with reference to the following figures.

  • 3 shows a program flow chart for the colorimetric color guide control in multicolor fields (gray fields),
  • Fig. 4 shows the method according to the invention as a diagram in the color space.

Von den Farbführungsorganen 2 ist eine Ist-Wert-Rückmeldung zur Ein-/Ausgabeeinheit 4 vorgesehen.1, a printing press 1 is provided in a manner known per se with ink guide elements 2, with the aid of which the ink supply and thus the layer thickness can be controlled by control signals. These control signals are supplied to the color guide elements 2 by a color control unit 3, which generates the control signals on the basis of color control data which are generated in an input / output device 4 in connection with a measured value processing unit 5. An actual value feedback to the input / output unit 4 is provided by the ink guide elements 2.

From a printed sheet 6 printed by the printing machine there is a print control strip 7 with several color measuring fields. These are scanned by a measuring head 8, which is part of a densitometer or a spectrometer 9. An electronic measuring head control unit 10 controls the position of the measuring head 8, whereby the actual position of the measuring head 8 can be forwarded to the measuring head control unit 10 and further to the measured value processing unit 5. Measured values are passed from the densitometer / spectrometer 9 to the measured value processing unit 5.

With the device shown in FIG. 1, control or largely regulation of the layer thicknesses in the sense of optimizing the color rendering is possible according to the inventive method explained in more detail below. In the case of corrections that make it necessary to weigh different quality parameters, the printer is made 4 suggestions via the input / output device, which he can change or follow by corresponding input.

Die Einzelfarbenregelung bietet sich an beim Einfarbendruck oder beim Druck von Sonderfarben.2 shows a special embodiment of the method for the case of single-color control. The single-color control is ideal for single-color printing or printing special colors.

According to the program flow chart according to FIG. 2, the measured values of the spectrometer or of the densitometer 9, ie the actual values, are queried at 11. At 12, the target values and the respective tolerances are taken from a memory. The difference between the measured value and the target value of each printing ink is formed by subtraction at 12. The relative change in layer thickness dS / S or change in density dDV / DV is then calculated at 14 for comparison of the actual value and the target value.

In program part 15, the dot gain Z i at the actual location is calculated and from this, for example, the dot gain Z at the target location target is determined at 16 via the "light-catching model" at 16, which has not yet been published beforehand in CH patent application 01 268 / 88-9. If the calculated dot gain Z lies at the target location target within the dot gain tolerance ZTol around the target dot gain Zset, which is checked at 17, the relative changes in layer thickness dS / S or density change dDV / DV are used to compare the actual value actual and target Value should be calculated at 18. These color control data are passed directly to the color control unit 3 via the color control data transmission 27.

If the calculated dot gain Z is at 17 at the target location Should, however, outside the tolerable dot gain ZSoll ± ZTol of the corresponding printing ink, at 19 the color location or density location Kann1 is calculated at the limit of the dot gain tolerance Z + ZTol. If this location can also within the color tolerance ETol or Density tolerance DVTol lies around the target location target, which is checked in program part 20, it becomes the new target location target1. The change in layer thickness calculated at 21 for comparing the actual location actual and target location target 1 is forwarded to the color control data transmission 27.

If the optional location Kann1 does not meet the additional condition that it lies within the color tolerance ETol or density tolerance DVTol, the optional location Kann2 at 22 is calculated at the color tolerance limit or density tolerance limit. If the dot gain lies within the extended limit of the dot gain tolerance N x ZTol, which is tested at 23, the layer thickness change dS / S or density change dDV / DV is calculated at 24 for comparison between the actual value actual and the target value target2 and sent to the Color control data transmission 27 passed.

In the event that the Kannort Kann2 at the color tolerance limit or density tolerance limit is not within the extended dot gain tolerance N x ZTol, the printer is given the options already mentioned for a further procedure. In program part 25, based on suggestions and on the basis of his experience based on a decision list, he can determine the further procedure via input / output device 2. The color control variables are calculated after the user input at 26 and passed on to the color control unit 3 via the color control data transmission 27.

Die Graufeldsteuerung bietet sich an, wenn mit den drei Standardfarben CYAN, MAGENTA, YELLOW gedruckt wird.3, a program flow chart for the implementation of the method according to the invention is proposed for the case of a colorimetric color guide control in gray fields. The gray field control is ideal when printing with the three standard colors CYAN, MAGENTA, YELLOW.

With density control, the densities are checked independently of one another to determine whether they are within the permissible tolerances (see single-color control).

Similar to that previously described under FIG. 2, the measured values of the spectrometer 9, ie the actual values, are queried at 11. At 12, the target values and the tolerances are taken from a memory. The difference between the measured values and the corresponding target values is formed by subtraction at 13. The relative change in layer thickness dS i / S i that is necessary for reaching the target values is then calculated at 28. Here and below, the index i stands for the standard colors involved in printing. Indexed sizes are determined independently of each other for all three printing inks.

In program part 29, the dot gain Z i is determined at the actual location. Approximately, for example, the "light trapping model", which has become known in the as yet unpublished CH patent application 01 268 / 88-9, can then be used to determine the dot gain Z i at 30 at the target location target. At 31 it is checked whether this approximately calculated dot gain Z i at the target location target lies within a predetermined dot gain tolerance ZTol i around the target dot gain. If this condition is fulfilled for each of the printing inks, the change in layer thickness dS i / S i already determined under 28 is forwarded via the program part 32 to the color control data transmission 27.

If one of the printing inks does not meet this condition, the corresponding maximum permissible layer thicknesses Smax i and Smin i are calculated under 33 for the maximum and minimum tolerable dot gain ZSoll i ± ZTol i . For colorimetric measurements using the known from the unpublished patent application 38 12 099.2 Process for ink control control taking into account the "layer thickness limitation" at 34 determines an optional location Kannl, in which each printing ink lies within its maximum permissible layer thickness.

If the new optional location Kann1 is within the tolerance, which is checked under 35, the optional location Kann1 becomes the new target location target1 and the layer thickness change dS i / S i calculated under 36 for comparison of the actual location actual and target Location Soll1 are fed to the color control data transmission 27.

If the optional location Kann1 is not within the tolerances, the dot gain tolerance ZTol i is expanded by a factor of N (N> 1) at 37 and the corresponding maximum tolerable values become the corresponding threshold values of the dot gain tolerances ZSoll i ± (N x ZTol i ) Limit values Smax ′ i and Smin ′ i determined for the layer thickness. The optional location Kann2 is then determined in program part 38, at which none of the maximum permissible layer thicknesses Smax i is exceeded.

The optimal color locus Opt is determined at 39. This optimal color locus Opt lies at the intersection of the straight lines connecting Kann1 and Kann2 with the surface of the tolerance range TolR. Under 40 whether associated with the optimal location Opt dot gain Zopt i exp within the enlarged Tonwertzunahmetoleranz (ZTol i) is checked, located around the target dot gain Zsoll. If this condition is met for all printing inks, Opt becomes the new target location Soll2 and the corresponding changes in layer thickness dS i / S i are determined under 41 and sent to the color control data transmission 27.

If, on the other hand, both conditions cannot be met at the same time, automatic control of the color control is not carried out in the further course of the process. Using a decision list 25, the printer can enter the further procedure. The corresponding color control variables are calculated at 42 and transferred to the color control data transmission 27.

In addition to the regulation / control according to color locations or density locations, this method also takes into account that, for good color rendering, for procedural reasons certain threshold values of the dot gain and the layer thickness must not be exceeded / undershot. If a location cannot be found considering the simple boundary conditions, the limit values for the boundary conditions are expanded. The printer only has to intervene manually in the color guide control if no suitable color location or density location can be found here either.

To clarify the program flowchart dealt with in FIG. 3, the individual method steps are shown in FIG. 4 with the aid of a sketch in the color space (L, A, B space).

Actual color location Eactual and target color location ESet are separated from one another by a certain color difference. The target color locus ESoll is now not controlled unconditionally. If not all dot gain at the target location is within the tolerances, it is checked beforehand whether an optional color location EKann1 can be found within the given dot gain tolerances - and thus within the maximum layer thicknesses S maxi , Smin i of the individual printing inks calculated from this - which is also within of the specified color tolerance range ETolR lies around the target color location ESoll. 4 is the maximum tolerable dot gain for only a first one without restriction Ink drawn in. The boundary surface is spanned by the two remaining printing inks. In the general form, but not shown here, the tonal value increase tolerances ZTol i form a parallelepiped as a space around the actual color locus EIst.

Da der Kann-Farbort EKann1 beiden Randbedingungen (maximale Schichtdicke und maximale Farbtoleranz) nicht gleichzeitig genügt, wird der Kann-Farbort EKann1 nicht zum neuen Soll-Farbort ESoll1.4 shows the case in which the optional color locus EKann1 does not lie within the color tolerance range ETolR spanned by the color tolerances ETol i . This color tolerance space ETolR has the advantageous shape of an ellipsoid, the larger axis of which lies in the direction of the L axis. This takes into account the fact that the human eye is much less sensitive to changes in brightness than to changes in color. Since the optional color location EKann1 does not meet both boundary conditions (maximum layer thickness and maximum color tolerance) at the same time, the optional color location EKann1 does not become the new target color location ESoll1.

Rather, the dot gain tolerance is expanded by a factor of N (N> 1) and another possible color location EKann2 is determined within the expanded dot gain. As shown, this optional color locus EKann2 fulfills the additional boundary condition and lies within the color tolerance ellipsoid around the target color locus ESet. However, since it is less favorable for an "optimal" color guide control to control a color locus EKann2 at the limit of the already increased tone value increase, the intersection of the connecting straight line between the two optional color loci EKann1, EKann2 with the surface of the tolerance becomes the new target color locus EOpt -Ellipsoids determined. The dot gain at EOpt is within the extended, tolerable dot gain. EOpt is therefore controlled as the new target location.
