Abstract

A process is provided for selectively converting the asphaltene-rich fraction of a hydrocarbon residuum to a refinery treatable product. The bitumen residuum is concentrated to provide an asphaltene-rich feedstock. The feedstock is admixed with a thermally decomposable catalyst precursor and preheated to a temperature of between about 200oC - 300oC under ambient conditions to convert said precursor to an active colloidal catalyst. The mixture is reacted with hydrogen under hydrocracking conditions at a temperature of between 420oC- 490oC to thereby selectively hydrocrack the asphaltene fraction.
