Roulette ist ein weitverbreitetes und beliebtes Glücksspiel, das sozusagen auf der ganzen Welt in zahlreichen Spielkasinos praktiziert wird. Für das Spiel benötigt man einerseits eine Roulettemaschine, in der Fachsprache Kessel oder Roulettekessel genannt, und anderseits einen Spieltisch, auf dessen Tischfläche eine Anzahl von Zahlen und Symbolen aufgebracht sind. Der Roulettekessel besteht aus einer kreisringförmigen, in der Mitte vertieften Schale, im allgemeinen aus hartem Edelholz, in deren Mitte ein schwerer, im allgemeinen metallischer Rotor bzw. Fächerrotor, im Fachjargon auch Zylinder genannt, reibungsarm drehbar gelagert ist. Der obere Rand der Schale ist etwas überhöht und an seiner Innenseite als Rollkanal von torischer Form ausgebildet. In Richtung zum Zentrum geht dieser Kanal in eine nach innen geneigte, trichterartige Rollfläche über, die durch die nach oben gewandte Fläche der Schale gebildet wird, und deren Innenperipherie den tiefsten Kreis der Schale bildet, längs welchem sie auf die Aussenperipherie des Fächerrotors trifft. Entlang dieser Aussenperipherie des Fächerrotors befinden sich, am Umfang angeordnet, eine Vielzahl von einander benachbarten, mit Nummern versehenen, vertieften Fächern, welche zur Aufnahme einer dort zur Ruhe gekommenen Spielkugel bestimmt sind. Die Nummern sind in Feldern neben den zugehörigen Fächern angebracht, und diese Felder sind ausserdem mit Farben, üblicherweise rot und schwarz, gekennzeichnet. Eine Bedienungsperson, Croupier genannt, versetzt den mit einem Drehkreuz oder Griff versehenen Fächerrotor in Drehung und wirft unmittelbar danach die kleine, meist aus Elfenbein bestehende Spielkugel tangential in den konkaven Rollkanal der Schale. Nach einigen Umkreisungen des Rollkanals beginnt die Spielkugel, allmählich entlang der trichterförmigen Rollfläche nach unten in Richtung zum Fächerrotor zu rollen um schliesslich irgendwo am tiefsten Kreisring in eines der numerierten Fächer des Fächerrotors zu fallen. Die um den Spieltisch versammelten Spieler haben inzwischen, solange noch ungewiss war, welches das Zielfach der Spielkugel sein werde, auf von ihnen ausgewählte Felder des Spieltisches eine Anzahl von Spielmarken, im allgemeinen als Jetons bezeichnet, gesetzt, und sie erhalten nun, bei Uebereinstimmung der Nummer des Feldes mit der Nummer des von der Spielkugel erreichten Faches, eine Prämie, die von der Spielbank unter Berücksichtigung der Gesetze der Wahrscheinlichkeit bestimmt wird. Noch weitere Felder können mit 'passe' und 'manque' bezeichnet sein, was sich auf die obere bzw. untere Hälfte des gesamten verwendeten Zahlenbereiches bezieht. Auch alle diese Felder sind, falls mit Jetons besetzt, im entsprechenden Fall, d.h. wenn die Spielkugel ihren Lauf in einem der entsprechenden Fächer beendet, gewinnberechtigt. Die Gewinnquoten der einzelnen Felder richten sich nach der Wahrscheinlichkeit, gemäss welcher die Spielkugel das entsprechende Fach erreicht. Wenn beispielsweise der Fächerrotor 36 Fächer aufweist, beträgt die Gewinnquote für ein einzelnes Zahlenfeld das 35-fache des Wertes der gesetzten Spielmarken plus den/die gesetzten Jeton(s). Wird auf andere Felder mit Merkmalen wie beispielsweise 'gerade' bzw. 'ungerade' oder auf 'rot' bzw. 'schwarz' gesetzt, so beträgt die Gewinnquote den einfachen Wert der gesetzten Jetons plus den/die gesetzte(n) Jeton(s). Ein Spieler kann auf dem Spieltisch auch Kombinationen von Zahlen belegen, die jeweils nach der Wahrscheinlichkeit ihrer Erreichbarkeit durch die Spielkugel bewertet werden.
