- the object of the invention is to design a firing system which can in particular solve this sealing problem to allow the firing of ammunition without a casing with weapons of the portable type, and whose architecture and the materials constituting it can also meet the requirements for thermo-mechanical behavior at instantaneous temperatures of combustion gases of the order of 2500 ° C.
- the invention provides a system for firing ammunition without a cartridge case, in particular of small caliber for a portable firearm, by discharging an electric arc produced in the vicinity of the primer of the ammunition at from a high voltage applied between two electrodes, firing system which is characterized in that the electrode forming the anode is mounted on a support fixed to the rear of the chamber, this support ensuring in particular sealing gas combustion and electrical insulation of the anode, and in that the electrode forming the cathode is constituted by the metallic chamber of the weapon.

- a very first advantage of the invention resides in a system which has sufficient properties to be able to be used in a reliable manner and in all security, in particular without untimely risk of thermal initiation.
- Another advantage of the firing system according to the invention lies in its compactness.
- the firing system 1 shown in FIG. 1 is intended to initiate a munition 2 without a casing, whose propellant charge 3 is ignited by a primer 4.
- the ammunition is positioned in a conventional manner in a loading chamber 5a and firing the partially shown breech 5 of a firearm.

- the anode A is a cylindrical stick which is mounted in the center of the insulating body 9 so as to be axially aligned with the munition 2 and opposite the primer 4 while being slightly recessed inside of the body 9.
- This anode A is made of molybdenum, a material which resists corrosion of combustion gases, and has a pointed end to promote the formation of the electric arc.
- the other end of the anode A is connected to the chamber 5 by an electrical circuit 6 comprising a source of electrical energy 12, of the high voltage capacitor type, and a switch I.
- the insulating body 9 is made of ceramic, in particular an alumina ceramic, a material chosen as a function of its electrical characteristics which ensure the insulation of the anode A, of its thermal characteristics which ensure the surface cooling of the part 13 of the ceramic in contact with the base of the ammunition 2 and its mechanical characteristics which offer good resistance to crushing. In fact, excessive heating of the surface of the ceramic 9 in contact with the ammunition 2 could cause thermo-initiation of the ammunition without a socket 2.
- the ceramic of the insulating body 9 is subjected to the pressure of the gases of combustion of the propellant charge 3, that is to say that it is mechanically stressed at each initiation and it must be avoided that it can crack.
- the ring 10 interposed between the insulating body 9 and the steel plug 11 is advantageously made of an elastically deformable material to absorb in particular the mechanical stresses transmitted to the body 9 at each initiation of a munition 2.
- This ring 10 is for example of a material relatively soft, such as stainless steel to homogenize the surfaces in contact and avoid stress concentrations due to surface irregularities. This makes it possible to have better mechanical strength of the insulating body 9 and to limit the risks of cracking of the ceramic.
- the anode A, the insulating body 9, the intermediate ring 10 and the plug 11 are assembled together by brazing to ensure the sealing of the support S to the combustion gases.

- the plug 11 has at its periphery a thread 18 which makes it possible to fix the support S of the anode A at the rear of the chamber 5a.
- the structure thus produced meets in particular the requirements of high thermo-mechanical resistance and sealing of the combustion gases with the outside, the chamber 5a of the weapon being subjected to pressures of the order of 5.10 8 Pa for a temperature instantaneous combustion gas of the order of 2500 ° C over 1 ms.
- the ammunition 2 When the ammunition is loaded into the chamber 5a and centered by its projectile in the barrel of the weapon, the ammunition 2 is supported on the support S of the anode A without contact with the metal side wall of the chamber 5.
- the surface 13 of the insulating body 9 of the support S on which the ammunition 2 bears is substantially equal to that of the base of the ammunition 2.
- the composition of the primer 4 must be sensitive to sparks, but not very sensitive to shock and friction.
- a known composition of the 4.5 Z model can be used.
- a protective coating 24 in the form of layers of varnish can be extended over the entire external surface of the propellant charge 3 including at the level of the straw 22 in order to provide protection. effective of the latter against environmental aggressions.
- the switch 13 When controlling the firing of a munition 2, the switch 13 is closed so as to apply a high voltage electrical pulse of the order of 8 kV delivered by the capacitor 12 between the anode A and the cathode C constituted by the room 5a. An electric arc then forms and the capacitor 12 discharges in a quasi-short circuit along a path having the lowest dielectric strength. This path passes through the protective coating 24, the metallized flake 22, the space 20 between the propellant charge 3, and the chamber 5a. The discharge of the capacitor 12 causes a breakdown between the anode A and the chamber 5a, breakdown which initiates the initiation 4. The dissipation of the energy released at the metallized flake 22 locally explodes the latter leading to vaporization of the metal of its metallic face. The metallic and thermal shock thus created is transmitted to the priming composition 4 which is initiated.
- the capacitor 12 is recharged after each initiation by a voltage V. It is provided according to the invention that the breakdown voltage necessary to initiate the initiation 4 intervenes for a value of the order of 8 kV, while the breakdown dielectric between the anode A and the ring 10 would only intervene for a voltage greater than 20 kV, which constitutes a safety factor.

- a breech lock 28 conventionally locks the barrel 25 to the breech 5.
Abstract
