Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for protecting a device from a Operation with impermissible consumables according to the generic term of claim 1 and an arrangement for performing the method according to the preamble of claim 6.
- the solution below is for the renewal of consumables of franking machines applicable. It is irrelevant whether it is ink cartridges for Ink jet printing units or around thermal transfer ribbon cartridges or around Rotary printing drums.
- the franking machine also uses ink and wears out the parts belonging to the printing technology, whereby it Interest of the user and the mail carrier is if high quality the manufacturer's own material is consumed.
- so-called piracy products this affects the Service life and print quality of the machine.
- an original product is recycled by the manufacturer.
- For example could be authorized ink in an original cartridge for a printing Device can be refilled. So far, however, it has not been possible to result Exclude manipulation possibilities completely.
- Ink end detection with electrodes is previously known from DE 27 28 283 C2.
- Two electrodes for a comparative measurement and a separate electrode for a conductivity measurement for signaling the end of ink are introduced in the base of the ink container.
- the contact resistance between these electrodes is measured and evaluated by means of an electronic circuit.
- the electrodes are arranged in depressions which are molded into the bottom of the container.
- the use of an electrically conductive ink is a prerequisite for the use of such an ink end detection. Protection against refilling with a different ink than the original ink is not possible.
- cassette-shaped containers with ink liquid, ribbon or toner from US 5,365,312, which has a chip-shaped Integrated circuit with an electronic memory for one Storage container identifying code, for an expiration date and others Show data as well as with a counter to the consumption at To determine printing by counting the individual printing pulses, which printed ink drops correspond.
- the integrated circuit saves the current fill status, which is determined by the printer control can be read out and displayed. Because reprogramming the chip and refilling the container is not possible the container cannot even be recycled by the manufacturer.
- a reusability lock has already been introduced in DE 196 13 945 C2 proposed for a container for the ink supply of an ink printhead.
- An ink connection line is from the ink printhead the container by means of a hollow needle through a rubber-elastic closure docked.
- One cover is when pulling the Container irreversibly triggered by the hollow needle.
- a refilled Ink reservoir can no longer be docked.
- This solution also reuse filled with original ink Containers.
- the used ink tanks can be used for proper Disposal only to the dealer or service of the manufacturer be returned. It appears to be disadvantageous, if even a recycled supplies provided by the manufacturer can be reused. The use of exactly copied piracy ink tanks can unfortunately not be prevented.
- Each code supplied by the data center is also limited in time, which prevents an attack after the predetermined time period.
- the counting of the impressions per se is also known.
- a disadvantage of the above method is the lack of synchronization between the output of the new codes for the consumables and the storage of the corresponding reference codes in the franking machine, on the one hand, and the unpredictable time of purchase and installation of the consumables in the franking machine. This inevitably leads to temporal overlaps, with consumables with old codes not interfering with the new reference codes stored in the franking machine. If more than one of the codes is declared valid during these transitional periods, the risk increases that codes that have become known are combined with unauthorized consumables and that this cannot be detected.
- Another disadvantage is the lack of information for the manufacturer that a certain customer is trying to use unauthorized consumables. This information is only gained by the franking machine, which can then only react in a pre-programmed manner, for example by refusing the franking. A flexible reaction to the customer, for example through a personal telephone connection on the part of the manufacturer combined with a temporary permission to use the unauthorized consumables, is not possible.
- the object of the invention is to develop a method for protecting against the use of impermissible consumables in devices, which largely minimizes the use of impermissible consumables. Overlaid old consumables are not permitted, as are those of poor quality from other manufacturers, especially piracy products.
- the protection should cover the same procedure for different consumables, regardless of their type.
- the attempt to use consumables by unauthorized manufacturers should also be covered.
- An arrangement for carrying out the method should have means which recognize at least the change of consumable material, its type or, optionally, its identifier and possibly its manufacturer. Refilling authorized ink containers with unauthorized ink is also to be made more difficult.
- the task is with the features of the method according to the claim 1 or solved with the features of the arrangement according to claim 6.
- Piracy protection for consumables has been established based on this Authentication evolves, with a data center's authenticity checked. It represents a significant logistical advantage various consumables, regardless of their type, with the protect the same process.
- an ink tank cartridge serves to evaluate a predetermined counter reading for the prints, when sensors turn on and detect an ink level.
- the perspective view of a franking machine 1 of the type T1000, is shown from the front left according to Figure 1.
- the franking machine 1 has an internal modem and is for example for reloading credit connectable to a data center 100 via a first data connection 14, which has a database 130.
- a chip card 10 is used for example to set the franking machine to one Cost center under which billing is to be carried out.
- the franking machine 1 has a cassette compartment 7, which is for a Inserting a thermal transfer ribbon cassette 9 must be opened.
- a block diagram, which relates to the - in the Fig.1 shown - franking machine 1 or any other Device applies.
- Such a device has a microcomputer ⁇ P 19 for Control of a keyboard and a display with controller User interfaces 4, a modem 13 and a printer 17 and / or other actuators, not shown, which have an input / output interface 18 are connected to the microcomputer ⁇ P 19.
- sensors other sensors, such as an encoder 90 and a letter sensor 91 connected.
- Detector 16 For the safe detection of the removal or changing the consumables is at least one Detector 16 connected to the input / output interface 18.
- a scanner 15 is connected to the input / output interface 18 or a comparable means of recognizing a code word on the consumable.
- the aforementioned device is a franking machine 1
- the An input / output interface 18 a postage computer balance 2 via a cable 24 be connected to the data connection.
- Another data connection 14 is used to connect the modem 13 to the data center 100. If necessary, the scanner 15 can be omitted if a code word entered via user interface 4 and via the modem 13 and the Data connection 14 to the data center 100 is transmitted.
- FIG. 3 shows a circuit diagram of a detector which reliably detects the removal or replacement of the consumable even when the device is switched off and is not supplied with system voltage U s .
- the detector has a standard lithium battery BAT, which supplies a memory with a memory maintenance voltage of approx. 3V.
- a first switch S1 is actuated when the consumable is removed or changed. For example, a mechanical contact is opened, which interrupts the voltage supply to the memory by the lithium battery BAT.
- This voltage supply is detected and causes the closing of a second switch S2, which is preferably implemented as a CMOS circuit.
- the RESET input of the memory is thereby connected to ground (L level), which leads to the secure deletion of the memory content of the memory.
- the memory can be designed as an SRAM, which can be equipped with a code by the microcomputer 19 via the interface 18 by means of a shift register (not shown) and can be queried for the presence of the code.
- the type of aggregation of the consumables with the code word depends preferably depending on the type of consumable. It is intended that a sensor directly or indirectly detects the presence of consumables allows to determine according to a physical principle of action, the consumable being a solid body. For example, that is Consumable an ink ribbon for a franking machine according to FIG. 1.
- the Consumable is an ink tank filled with ink.
- the Consumable for one - not shown - other franking machine is provided that the Consumables an inkjet printhead with an integrated ink tank or a cartridge.
- One such is a disposable printhead the Siemens type DHP50.
- the solution according to the invention can also be used in franking machines of a different type, for example with a franking machine with a printing drum.
- the consumable is an ink. After opening a cover ink can be refilled from a bottle or ink cartridge. The code word is printed on the bottle or ink cartridge or on a label attached to the latter.
- a franking machine with the EFS type printing drum has an inking unit with it a step-shaped roofing that makes it easy to refill the ink enables and an unwanted escape of the ink color prevented (EP 269 883 B1).
- the stamp color runs out of one screwed cartridge into an ink chamber and is by means of rollers transported to the printing drum.
- a particularly simple variant is possible assume that the code word is visually readable as a number with the Consumables are included and that the user is typing make the number by pressing the appropriate controls got to.
- the advantage of a semi-automatic solution is a) if there is no need for a scanner in the franking machine, b) in the protection of the consumable ink, which is thereby the first time is made possible.
- the franking machine has a sensor and a control unit with processor, which is programmed, after the aforementioned recognition to a message generate and show on display and towards entering the number wait, which is transmitted as a code word via modem to the data center becomes.
- the Consumables are in a non-solid state.
- the consumable is certain liquid for a letter humidifier and sealer.
- the latter can be part of an automatic feed device for Letters be.
- Another variant uses a chip in which the code word is stored and by establishing a connection, for example via electrical contacts when installing the new consumables can be read out.
- a - shown in Figure 1 - postage calculator scale 2 has one Weighing plate 21, a display 23 and a keyboard 25 for entering Shipping information about a letter to be conveyed 33. If one further data connection 24 between the devices of a system can exist from a device, for example from the postage calculator scale 2 of a franking system not only the weight, postage and other data on the franking machine 1 but via the modem Franking machine 1 also a message to the remote Data center 100 are sent, for example what rate PROM is used for the postage value calculation. The latter is located itself within a memory card 22, which is in the postage calculator scale 2 can be inserted. The data center 100 can be based on in a Database 110 stored data distinguish whether an authorized or an unauthorized postage fee table in the postage calculator scale 2 is used.
- Rate-PROM can also be checked, for example any other component that is in modular, removable form and has a memory.
- An automatic feeder 3 with an integrated separating device is arranged upstream of the franking machine 1.
- a pressure bracket 35 can be folded up and then presses on a stack of mail, from which 32 letters are separated by means of take-off rollers. Further parts of the separating device are located under a hood 34.
- a letter lies against a guide plate 31 and is moved downstream to the guide plate 11 of the franking machine 1, where the printing process called "franking" takes place.
- a franked letter moved on lies against a guide plate 81 of a locking module 8.
- a pair of closing rollers 82 ensures the closing of envelope envelopes that are not yet completely closed and the ejection via an insert 5 in the storage box 6.
- the structure of the franking machine of the JetMail® type has been described in more detail, for example, in the unpublished German patent application DE 199 00 686.5-27 , entitled: Arrangement for closing envelopes.
- a chip card disk / reader unit 70 and an on / off switch 71 are arranged in the guide plate 11 of the franking machine 1. After switching on, a chip card 10 can be used in connection with the user interface 43, 45 to simplify the setting of the franking machine.
- the user interface 43, 45 is located on the meter 12 of the franking machine 1.
- German utility model DE 298 21 903 U1 an internationally applicable user interface has been explained in more detail.
- a microprocessor (not shown) of the franking machine 1 monitors the fill level of an ink tank 95 shown in FIG an ink end sensor 92.
- the latter can according to the German Patent 196 13 944 C1 are in contact with two electrodes.
- sensors already deliver an end signal in JetMail, if a maximum of 200 franking postings are still possible, for one reason Avoid lack of ink incompletely printed franking image.
- the microprocessor may generate a display text Indicated on display 43: THE INK SUPPLY IS ALMOST USED UP. PLEASE REPLACE THIS SOON INK TANK! RESERVE IN PRINT: 200.
- the franking machine 1 can now continue to be operated with the reserve ink quantity.
- the microprocessor realizes a down counter in its memory space, which is preset to 200 by the ink end signal and is decremented by one with each additional franking.
- the number 200 results empirically from empirical values for a remainder of possible prints and a safety factor.
- the number identifying the rest can be displayed before the next franking.
- the microprocessor After each further franking, the microprocessor generates a status line which shows the number of remaining prints and finally issues the message: THE INK SUPPLY IS USED. PLEASE CHANGE THE INK TANK.
- the used ink tank 95 can be removed and put into a plastic bag which catches any ink residue that may leak.
- a new ink tank can be removed from the packaging and checked to ensure that the color of the ink is correct.
- a hole code on the back of the ink tank can be used for this.
- the new code word can be read.
- the ink tank is inserted into - not shown - side guide rails of the ink tank compartment and pushed in until it clicks into place.
- the microprocessor generates the message: THE INK TANK MISSING!
- a contact is automatically closed. The franking machine recognizes through this contact that a new consumable has been installed.
- the original ink type post red, fluorescent red, etc.
- the microprocessor now generates a message that prompts the customer to enter the new code word via the display: ENTER CODE WORD.
- the customer can take this code word, for example, from an imprint on the packaging and enter it into the franking machine 1 using the keyboard 45.
- a connection is established with the manufacturer's data center.
- Modern franking machines are all already equipped with a modem equipped to communicate with the manufacturer's data center to be able to. This is usually used to withdraw a credit amount from Data center get loaded when the appropriate memory was franked empty.
- the transmission of the code words can be carried out separately immediately after determining the new consumable or an additional one Part of the communication for periodic remote charging of the Franking machine at a later date.
- Known measures backup are used to prevent the Code words can be eavesdropped on the transmission link.
- the data center receives the code word of the new consumable 95 together with an identifier of the franking machine 1.
- FIG. 6 is a block diagram of a franking machine of the JetMail® type with a control unit 40 to 58 having a processor 46 and with a base including an integrated scale 20, a rate PROM 22, a modem 53 and such a detector 96, which changing or using a new ink tank cartridge 95 recognizes.
- the rate PROM 22 may alternatively be in the dashed line Memory module 51, 52 can be realized within the meter.
- the direct measuring method by means of the detector 96 can be replaced by an indirect measuring method which uses the existing sensors 92 and 97.
- a predetermined residual amount of ink is detected by means of the electrodes 93, 94 and the sensor 92 and communicated to the microprocessor 46 via the assemblies SAS 59, sensor / actuator control interface ASIC 58, which then generates a display.
- a predetermined remnant of ink remains, which is sufficient for approx. 200 prints, if the conductivity between the contacts 93, 94 falls below a predetermined threshold value.
- Switching the franking machine 1 on / off via the switch 71 can be detected via the sensor 97, which is also connected to the SAS 59.
- Switching off at the time when the postage meter machine only has the remaining ink can indicate an impending change.
- An ink end can be determined by comparing the counted impressions with a limit value or by counting down from a predetermined number. If the franking machine can be operated beyond a number of, for example, 200 impressions after switching on again without a change to the restored conductivity between contacts 93, 94 detected via contacts 93, 94 and sensor 92, then this is an indication that that ink has been refilled without authorization in the meantime.
- at least one advertisement is generated and, if necessary, a message is sent to the data center when a credit needs to be reloaded.
- a security module 60 developed by the applicant serves as the first billing module and has a hardware billing unit 63 and a battery-based non-volatile memory 61, in which credit can be loaded via modem 53.
- An OTP (One Time Programmable) processor 66 executes security routines both when reloading the credit and to secure the register data with a MAC (Message Authentication Code).
- the advantage of the security module is that the reliability and approval of the franking and franking machine according to the invention, which is carried out by the mail carrier, is then only required for the processor system 60 concerned and the connected printer module 55-57.
- the chip card 10 forms a second processing module in connection with the chip card read / write unit 70.
- the microprocessor 46 and the first memory components 41, 42 then form a third processing module and the microprocessor 46 and the second memory components 51, 52 (dashed lines) then form one fourth processing module, etc.
- one accounting module is sufficient and the other processing modules can take on other tasks.
- the microprocessor 46 with the associated memories 41, 42 is programmed to count the imprints in connection with the detection of a change in the ink tank cartridge, and is used as a postage calculator and for pressure control.
- the accounting module 60 is used for accounting and calculation of encryption codes at least for communication with the data center for the purpose of reloading credit. Because of this division of tasks, the accounting module 60 has been further developed into a security module.
- All processing modules 41, 42 and 51, 52, the security module 60, the microprocessor 46, the interface modules 44, 54 and 55, a main RAM pixel RAM 47, clock / date module 48, cliché memory EEPROM 49, program memory ROM 50 and an ASIC with the sensor / actuator control interface 58 are connected to a meter-internal bus 40 of the control.
- An input to the ports of the microprocessor 46 for the corresponding control of the franking machine 1 is made by means of the keyboard 45.
- a generated screen image can reach the display 43 via the interface module 44.
- the display has an integrated controller for support.
- Both interface circuits 54 and 58 can also be implemented in an ASIC user circuit. Further details can be found in EP 716 398 A2, which carries the title: Internal franking machine interface circuit and methods for manipulation-proof print data control. For Control of the other components in the base and in the periphery Further versions can be found in EP 875 864 A2, which describes the Title carries: Arrangement for communication between stations one Mail processing machine.
- the modem 53 is electrically connected to the meter 12 of the franking machine 1 via the interface 54.
- a further advantage results from the comparison of the code words carried out in the remote data center 100 (not shown). Even with a valid code word, it is checked whether it has already been used. If it was reported by another franking machine, its user has obviously passed on the code word and the new customer has tried to use unauthorized consumables in combination with this code word. If the customer has already given the code word himself, this is an indication that he has now acquired unauthorized ones after using authorized consumables.
- the range of possible measures ranges from a friendly telephone warning, to the sending out of a service technician with original consumables to the remote shutdown of the franking machine 1, for example in the case of a repeat offender.
- the advantage of this method is that there are no "old" code words that are no longer valid and which, if passed on, can cause infiltration of the security system. This is achieved in that the checking of the code words does not take place in the individual franking machines 1 which are not networked with one another, but instead at the level of the data center, which has access to all assigned code words and is always in sync with newly produced consumables, also with the corresponding reference code words is loaded.
- the data center may be remote from a credit reload data center, but is connected to the latter.
- Another advantage is that there is no need to issue new codes at certain intervals and to invalidate the old ones, with more than one set of code words always being valid in the transition periods.
- Another advantage of the method is the ability to obtain information about the type of manipulation. For example, it is possible to identify not only the customer who intends to use the unauthorized consumable, but also the source from which he is likely to have obtained a valid code word.
- the piece counter is transferred from the franking machine 1 to the data center, which indicates how many frankings have been carried out since the last credit reloading.
- the consumables are designed for a certain number of franking imprints, which are only subject to a slight fluctuation if no or little priming is carried out (e.g. Jet Mail tank for 30,000 frankings +/- 5%).
- the time of purchase of the consumables divides the time period between two credit reloads into a certain ratio. This ratio must also correspond to the ink consumption if the user behavior has not changed fundamentally.
- the ratio calculation can also extend over more than one period of credit recharges and becomes more precise.
- Known data protection measures are used in communication to prevent the code words from being eavesdropped on the transmission link.
- the franking machine checks whether the two, ie the code word and the reference code word, are mathematically in a predetermined relationship to one another. If this is the case, the registered consumable is considered authorized and there is nothing to prevent further use of the franking machine 1.
- the advantage of this variant is that even when the Communication with the data center the franking machine independently carry out the comparison and activate or block it or change their operation in another suitable way, so that a use of refilled authorized ink containers with unauthorized Ink is at least difficult.
- a verification of the authorization of the consumable can in principle also in both, i.e. in the data center and additionally in the franking machine.
Abstract
Description
Rotationsdrucktrommeln handelt. The invention relates to a method for protecting a device from a
Operation with impermissible consumables according to the generic term
of
Franking machines have been and have been known since the 1920s still perfected today. The printing principle has changed from original purely mechanical solutions with a printing drum electronic solutions with thermal transfer or inkjet printheads changed. In the increasingly electronic controls were from 1970s microprocessors and electronic credit memory used. A common payment principle "pay before" is based on that a monetary amount debited from a customer account, so-called Amount of credit in which the franking machine is managed. With every franking this credit amount will be replaced by the amount printed on the package Franking amount reduced. The franking machine can with one Credit amount can be reloaded. At the same time there are special security measures have been developed that allow unauthorized manipulation to Prevent damage to the manufacturer or user or the mail carrier or should detect. The franking machine also uses ink and wears out the parts belonging to the printing technology, whereby it Interest of the user and the mail carrier is if high quality the manufacturer's own material is consumed. However so-called piracy products, this affects the Service life and print quality of the machine. But it could be allowed be that an original product is recycled by the manufacturer. For example could be authorized ink in an original cartridge for a printing Device can be refilled. So far, however, it has not been possible to result Exclude manipulation possibilities completely.
Under the title: Arrangement for ink supply and disposal for an ink print head was already in DE 196 13 944 C1 for Franking machine of the type JetMail® suitable ink cartridge with two proposed approximately identical ink tanks. The one Ink container is used for disposal, which is collected during priming Ink. The other ink tank is for ink supply and has via an ink end detection with two electrodes but none Protection against refilling with one from the manufacturer is not authorized ink.
Ink end detection with electrodes is previously known from DE 27 28 283 C2. Two electrodes for a comparative measurement and a separate electrode for a conductivity measurement for signaling the end of ink are introduced in the base of the ink container. The contact resistance between these electrodes is measured and evaluated by means of an electronic circuit. The electrodes are arranged in depressions which are molded into the bottom of the container. The use of an electrically conductive ink is a prerequisite for the use of such an ink end detection. Protection against refilling with a different ink than the original ink is not possible.
For the sake of security, such sensors for ink end detection already provide the end signal when a maximum of 200 frankings are still possible, in order to avoid a franking print image which has not been printed out incompletely due to a lack of ink and which has already been billed. However, priming is no longer possible. The end signal is usually given too late to reorder an ink tank.
There are already cassette-shaped containers with ink liquid, ribbon or toner from US 5,365,312, which has a chip-shaped Integrated circuit with an electronic memory for one Storage container identifying code, for an expiration date and others Show data as well as with a counter to the consumption at To determine printing by counting the individual printing pulses, which printed ink drops correspond. The integrated circuit saves the current fill status, which is determined by the printer control can be read out and displayed. Because reprogramming the chip and refilling the container is not possible the container cannot even be recycled by the manufacturer.
A reusability lock has already been introduced in DE 196 13 945 C2 proposed for a container for the ink supply of an ink printhead. An ink connection line is from the ink printhead the container by means of a hollow needle through a rubber-elastic closure docked. One cover is when pulling the Container irreversibly triggered by the hollow needle. A refilled Ink reservoir can no longer be docked. Unfortunately prevented this solution also reuse filled with original ink Containers. The used ink tanks can be used for proper Disposal only to the dealer or service of the manufacturer be returned. It appears to be disadvantageous, if even a recycled supplies provided by the manufacturer can be reused. The use of exactly copied piracy ink tanks can unfortunately not be prevented. A distinction between original consumables and be unauthorized copies of the same. That not checked by the manufacturer or consumables that have not been released by him will be one The legibility of the franking imprint is at risk. The franking imprint must be visually and machine-readable by the postal authorities, to be able to verify the postage payment. The consumable used must therefore together with other components of the Franking machine to be approved by the postal authorities.
Frankiermaschine gespeicherten Referenzcodes zusammenspielt.
From EP 730 974 A2 a solution by the applicant is known specifically for thermal transfer ribbons. Markers (eg a bar code at the beginning of the ribbon) are stamped on the manufacturer by the manufacturer. After the ink ribbon has been inserted into the franking machine, this marking is automatically detected (for example by means of an optical scanner). The data content of the marking is transmitted to the control unit of the franking machine and compared with pre-stored reference codes. The manufacturer has stored these reference codes in a non-volatile manner in the franking machine. In order to counteract the becoming known of the codes, it has also already been proposed to regenerate these codes at certain time intervals, and these can be stored in the franking machine by a data center of the manufacturer by means of remote data transmission. Each code supplied by the data center is also limited in time, which prevents an attack after the predetermined time period. The counting of the impressions per se is also known.
A disadvantage of the above method is the lack of synchronization between the output of the new codes for the consumables and the storage of the corresponding reference codes in the franking machine, on the one hand, and the unpredictable time of purchase and installation of the consumables in the franking machine. This inevitably leads to temporal overlaps, with consumables with old codes not interfering with the new reference codes stored in the franking machine. If more than one of the codes is declared valid during these transitional periods, the risk increases that codes that have become known are combined with unauthorized consumables and that this cannot be detected.
Another disadvantage is the lack of information for the manufacturer that a certain customer is trying to use unauthorized consumables. This information is only gained by the franking machine, which can then only react in a pre-programmed manner, for example by refusing the franking. A flexible reaction to the customer, for example through a personal telephone connection on the part of the manufacturer combined with a temporary permission to use the unauthorized consumables, is not possible.
Qualitätsverlust nicht sofort verhindern kann.DE 198 38 913 A1 describes a method for checking the originality of a Product, such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverages or electronics or software products known, which is information delivers to the manufacturer whether a particular customer is an authorized one or unauthorized product. The latter can neither difficult to be prevented. Consequently, a device without any legal Consequences and operated without disadvantages with unauthorized consumables , especially if the manufacturer does not necessarily have to do so in Knowledge and thus a possible loss of quality is not immediately can prevent.
An upcoming change of consumables is already known shown on the display. Already in the German publication DE 195 49 376 A1 was proposed by the applicant Sensors for determining the amount of ribbon left on ribbon cartridges to use for a thermal transfer printer or the number of Counting by means of the control of the thermal transfer printer.
Counting the number of prints on the piezo ink jet print heads is not possible Provide information about the amount of ink remaining in the ink tank, because one low to medium number of frankings per day of consumption by priming outweighs what the number of possible prints ever Ink tank filling reduced. With piezo ink jet print heads, unfortunately Primes lost much of their ink and can not get their heads back be fed. It is also known to be the one used in priming Feed the ink part back to the head. That's why it's safe Ink supply important to recognize the ink end and timely signal. In the event of an early replacement or use of a refilled one but not completely full ink tanks can the remaining ink quantity cannot be determined exactly. Thus, it cannot simply be ascertained whether there has been a change in the meantime.
weitgehend minimiert. Unzulässig sind überlagerte alte
Verbrauchsmaterialien ebenso, wie diejenigen von schlechter Qualität
anderer Hersteller, insbesondere Piraterieprodukte.
The object of the invention is to develop a method for protecting against the use of impermissible consumables in devices, which largely minimizes the use of impermissible consumables. Overlaid old consumables are not permitted, as are those of poor quality from other manufacturers, especially piracy products. The protection should cover the same procedure for different consumables, regardless of their type. The attempt to use consumables by unauthorized manufacturers should also be covered. An arrangement for carrying out the method should have means which recognize at least the change of consumable material, its type or, optionally, its identifier and possibly its manufacturer.
Refilling authorized ink containers with unauthorized ink is also to be made more difficult.
The task is with the features of the method according to the
Piracy protection for consumables has been established based on this Authentication evolves, with a data center's authenticity checked. It represents a significant logistical advantage various consumables, regardless of their type, with the protect the same process.
- recognize the change of a consumable,
- after the aforementioned recognition, to display a message on the display and to wait for a code to be entered,
- to establish a communication link to the remote data center, to transmit the entered code and to receive a notification of the device after checking the code in the data center and
- change the operation of the device if the notification contains that the verification of the code externally from the device has not shown that the consumables are authentic.
The latter is the case when there is no predetermined relationship with any of the remotely stored reference code or mismatch. For the indirect detection of changing an ink tank cartridge serves to evaluate a predetermined counter reading for the prints, when sensors turn on and detect an ink level.

werden kann.FIG. 3 shows a circuit diagram of a detector which reliably detects the removal or replacement of the consumable even when the device is switched off and is not supplied with system voltage U s . The detector has a standard lithium battery BAT, which supplies a memory with a memory maintenance voltage of approx. 3V. A first switch S1 is actuated when the consumable is removed or changed. For example, a mechanical contact is opened, which interrupts the voltage supply to the memory by the lithium battery BAT. This voltage supply is detected and causes the closing of a second switch S2, which is preferably implemented as a CMOS circuit. The RESET input of the memory is thereby connected to ground (L level), which leads to the secure deletion of the memory content of the memory. Otherwise, when the device is switched on, there is a positive voltage U s = +4.5 to + 5V (H level) at the reset input via a resistor R and diode D1, or a positive voltage U BAT = + via diode D2 when the device is switched off 2.5 to + 3V (H level). The memory can be designed as an SRAM, which can be equipped with a code by the
The type of aggregation of the consumables with the code word depends preferably depending on the type of consumable. It is intended that a sensor directly or indirectly detects the presence of consumables allows to determine according to a physical principle of action, the consumable being a solid body. For example, that is Consumable an ink ribbon for a franking machine according to FIG. 1.
For a franking machine according to Figure 4 it is provided that the Consumable is an ink tank filled with ink. For one - not shown - other franking machine is provided that the Consumables an inkjet printhead with an integrated ink tank or a cartridge. One such is a disposable printhead the Siemens type DHP50.
In principle, the solution according to the invention can also be used in franking machines of a different type, for example with a franking machine with a printing drum. It is provided that the consumable is an ink. After opening a cover ink can be refilled from a bottle or ink cartridge. The code word is printed on the bottle or ink cartridge or on a label attached to the latter. A franking machine with the EFS type printing drum has an inking unit with it a step-shaped roofing that makes it easy to refill the ink enables and an unwanted escape of the ink color prevented (EP 269 883 B1). The stamp color runs out of one screwed cartridge into an ink chamber and is by means of rollers transported to the printing drum. A particularly simple variant is possible assume that the code word is visually readable as a number with the Consumables are included and that the user is typing make the number by pressing the appropriate controls got to. The advantage of a semi-automatic solution is a) if there is no need for a scanner in the franking machine, b) in the protection of the consumable ink, which is thereby the first time is made possible.
This solution also exposes the presence of a modem and ahead of a sensor that changes or uses a new one Recognizes consumables. It is envisaged that the franking machine has a sensor and a control unit with processor, which is programmed, after the aforementioned recognition to a message generate and show on display and towards entering the number wait, which is transmitted as a code word via modem to the data center becomes.
For some peripheral device, for example, it is provided that the Consumables are in a non-solid state. For a peripheral device is provided that the consumable is certain liquid for a letter humidifier and sealer. The latter can be part of an automatic feed device for Letters be. Usually, however, there is at least one container, the is a solid body and can be marked.
Another variant uses a chip in which the code word is stored and by establishing a connection, for example via electrical contacts when installing the new consumables can be read out.

heraus: DER TINTENVORRAT IST AUFGEBRAUCHT. BITTE
Kontakt geschlossen. Die Frankiermaschine erkennt durch diesen
Kontakt, daß ein neues Verbrauchsmaterial installiert wurde. In
ursprüngliche Tintentyp (Post rot, rot flureszierend, usw.) detektiert
The

When the new consumable is docked, a contact is automatically closed. The franking machine recognizes through this contact that a new consumable has been installed. Depending on a hole coding on the back of the ink tank, the original ink type (post red, fluorescent red, etc.) can be detected using suitably designed contacts. The microprocessor now generates a message that prompts the customer to enter the new code word via the display: ENTER CODE WORD. The customer can take this code word, for example, from an imprint on the packaging and enter it into the
In diesem Fall
Now that the

Ein OTP-(One Time Programmable)-Prozessor
Alternatively, the direct measuring method by means of the

Postbearbeitungsmaschine. There are more via the sensor / actuator control interface 58 - not closer here

The
The range of possible measures ranges from a friendly telephone warning, to the sending out of a service technician with original consumables to the remote shutdown of the
The advantage of this method is that there are no "old" code words that are no longer valid and which, if passed on, can cause infiltration of the security system. This is achieved in that the checking of the code words does not take place in the
Another advantage is that there is no need to issue new codes at certain intervals and to invalidate the old ones, with more than one set of code words always being valid in the transition periods. In the solution according to the invention, there is no need for storage space in the
Another advantage of the method is the ability to obtain information about the type of manipulation. For example, it is possible to identify not only the customer who intends to use the unauthorized consumable, but also the source from which he is likely to have obtained a valid code word.
Effective protection against refilling of ink tanks is also possible within the scope of this inventive method. With this unauthorized refilling with some ink, the ink tank does not necessarily have to be removed from the device. Rather, it is also conceivable that the ink is injected into the stationary tank with a cannula. In this case, no contact would be triggered, which indicates the change of the consumables and subsequently asks the customer to enter the new code word. The following variant helps:
Let's say the customer initially purchased authorized consumables; this is guaranteed at least when purchasing the
In principle, the authorization of the consumables can only be checked in the franking machine. It is also necessary to transmit the code words immediately after determining the new consumable or as an additional component of the communication for the periodic remote loading of the franking machine at a later point in time. The data center receives the code word of the new consumable 95 together with an identifier of the
The advantage of this variant is that even when the Communication with the data center the franking machine independently carry out the comparison and activate or block it or change their operation in another suitable way, so that a use of refilled authorized ink containers with unauthorized Ink is at least difficult. A verification of the authorization of the consumable can in principle also in both, i.e. in the data center and additionally in the franking machine.
The invention is not limited to the present embodiment. Rather, a number of variations are within the scope of the claims conceivable. So obviously other other versions of the Invention are developed or used by the same Basic ideas of the invention, starting from the attached Claims are included.
