Allerdings sind die Kontaktflächen einer Direktkontaktierungssteckverbindung nach dem Stand der Technik nur in zwei Reihen angeordnet, nämlich in einer Reihe auf der Oberseite der Leiterplatte und in einer Reihe auf der Unterseite der Leiterplatte. Im Gegensatz zu einer Kontaktmesserleiste, die aus mehreren Kontaktreihen bestehen kann, besteht somit bei einer Direktsteckverbindung der Nachteil der geringeren Pinanzahl. Wenn schon die Möglichkeit ausgenutzt ist, auf Ober- und Unterseite der Leiterplatte Kontaktflächen anzubringen, besteht bisher nur die Möglichkeit der Verkleinerung der Pinabstände.
